  1. That wasn't me, Carter wasn't far left, he just tried to do it all himself, made some mistakes and people burned him for it because he was such a ego maniac. His policies were mixed, but he thought he knew it all... still does and he does engender inclusiveness in his efforts.
  2. Or has been in a recession for 20 years and their answer when things got worse recently was to increase interest rates. This limits money supply making it even more tight. Please, you guys don't even understand monetary policy.
  3. Having worked for a commercial fisherman on the Great Lakes, those guys are the salt of the earth. I respect him for taking care of his family. I love his line about asking more questions about when Sarah joined the PTA. P.S. McCain put me to sleep. His speech was trying to get the voters to the polls, oh really... the lemming on morning Joe is saying this. Mc Cain's story is compelling but he looked old. You know when you listen to your grandfather tell stories and he goes on slowly forever. Interesting but get to the point sometime today.
  4. Agreed, screening should still be tough, but adopted parents rights should be protected from birth parent intervention and contact if not wanted. I am adopted and am grateful for both my birth mom, who realized she couldn't take care of me at 48, a widow, and my folks who gave me a good home. I knew that I was adopted before I even understood what the word meant. Still had to deal with some separation crap later on that I didn't realize was there, but all in all I have no complaints given the grass on the other side of the street. I am pro-choice for a lot of reasons, but abortions should be rare and adoption should be encouraged.
  5. It was because she made a follow up statement that majority of American's do not live in cities.... Oh? Really? Have you seen the latest census numbers lately. Of the ten largest cities, not even including the ten largest metro areas, population totaled 135+ million, more than a third of our population. 50.13% of the population lived in the 40 most populas metro areas in the country. There are over 500 metro areas totaling at least 54,000 people. I haven't yet added up this total, but I am willing to guess that two thirds of the population of the U.S. lives in a metropolitian area. Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_Unit...atistical_Areas America is no longer rural folks, as much as we want to romanticize about it.
  6. I know, polls mean relatively nothing right now.
  7. Another rwinger smoking that good AK weed? What the heck is the above nasty drivel. If it were not for their efforts, towns, cities and courts across this country the laws would not be upheld. Please, what you think that we are full of harmony in this country, there is not racial, ethnic or gender divides. Granted many laws are on the books but unless folks are aware as anything else they are not enforced fully and we end up taking two steps back.
  8. That part I agree with for both family members. We left dc for that reason, to raise our first child, now we have two. 16-18 hour days don't mix with child rearing and in the WH it is worse. But I know a lot of folks do what they have to, but my wife and I wanted to be around in our children's early years. We are sacrificing financially, but it works and we are there for our boys. I am not sure I would wish DC political life on any child.
  9. Speaking of which, what is Wall Street's reaction if any to Palin's speech?
  10. Was wondering when that was going to happen, the old GOP excuse, invoking Clinton's zipper problem.
  11. #1Not True, but you go on with that one. #2 Can't argue that.
  12. I believe in a woman's right to choose (D) I could care less about gay marriage (D) Anti Gun Control R, but want background checks completed before purchase or otherwise and if a domestic violence restraining order has ever been effect, that person should be precluded from owning a gun. Anti Tax, taxes are necessary, but the budget should be balanced, all bills should be paid for, line item veto should return and corporate loopholes should be closed, but then overall taxes should be lowered. Taxes are currently a greater problem at the local level in NYC, with business taxes, county, town and state taxes, let alone sales tax. They should all be added up and not greater than 50% of gross revenue. Immigration should be better monitored and controlled, not sure, tricky issue. Anti-Iraq war, but should do best to get out successfully. I am for going after Al-Qaieda in Afghanistan and we should have been doing it with full-force consistently since 911 not just in fits and starts.
  13. Sorry, that was pretty unintelligent. My 4 year old was interrupting me and I was editing photos from an event. What I was trying to say was in response to your stating that McCain's military service and support by his fellow servicemen was enough for you to vote for him as President was like women voting for either Hillary or Palin because they are women. It lacks depth and investigation. But from your other posts I know that is not true, so why use such a throw away line. It may be a factor, but I rarely vote for a person because they are involved with something I have participated in or generally support. I am more likely to give them the benefit of the doubt though, but I weigh all the pluses and minuses. In fact, that Palin has a special needs child, depending on her views on the subject, is more likely to make me sympathetic to her. I have a 21 month old special needs child and am still learning about his condition. P.S. I am not sure who I am going to support in this election. It probably won't be McCain, he would have to make some serious changes in his economic policy for me to support him, but I am not sure about Obama. I have been through 2 relatively unknown admins with charismatic African American men. In Virginia, Doug Wilder, who turned out to be very conservative and tone deaf to the needs of No. Virginia and most recently Deval Patrick, who has had difficulties of his own. Deval seems to be doing better lately, but Romney left him with a lot of unresolved issues with major problems and he has not handled all them well and has been tone deaf occasionally. That being said, McCain is often tone deaf on a number of things including alternative energy investment and has support much of the oil industry agenda. My problem is that as a Republican friend of mine stated recently, we have two bad choices and have to plug our noses and choose one or make a protest vote for one of the lesser candidates. Not voting and not participating is not an option for me. If I had my druthers, I would have liked Senator Chuck Hagel. A moderate but forceful Senator and former Army infantryman from Nebraska who served in Vietnam.
  14. So you are just the female lemmings who say they will vote for Palin or Clinton because they are lemmings. I don't buy that, you can justify and actually think you have, but why use such a throw away statement
  15. Agreed, what is more telling is how many of his amendments did he support and were accepted. It is hard to tell when the other side has been in charge until the last two years. Often they, especially the Republicans, but now the Dems are using the same strategy. Taking an R bill and reintroducing it as their own, cutting out Republican sponsorship.
  16. Sure, sure, registered independent, but your posts alre hardly that. I am not an independent, I admit it. Besides, stating that you are an independent just means you are uninvolved. So I am not saying join the Ds or Rs. But get involved with what you believe in and stop waffling on the independent fence. Most people, even when they claim they are independent are really an uninvolved D or R because they don't have the stomach for politics. But they still vote consistently with one or the other, so I am not buying your claim.
  17. Fine you got me, I didn't read the whole thread. Also, a quick search on the www.gpo.gov reveals that only about 6 or 7 pieces of significant legislation has been signed into law in the last two years. This does not include appropriation bills where often significant legislation is passed with amendment. As a junior Senator, Obama is unlikely to have been a major sponsor of much more then two pieces of legislation. The real interest should be in his amendments. I have not read them yet and but I would guess most as a junior senator will be focused directly on his constituents. The fact that he is on two major pieces of legislation is significant.
  18. Oh please, go look them up yourself. They have already been listed on other posts. Yes, the Dems have been in control of both houses this past year because the GOP screwed it up and pushed a lot of pork threw for small towns including Wasilla's $12 million. So that is where the funding from the bridge to nowhere went. It didn't get rescinded. Pelosi does come across as shrill, but she has been a pretty good leader behind the scenes. Additionally, the GOP has done a great political hack job on her, but from a P.R. standpoint, on the stump she has given them lots of ammunition.
  19. Should be fun to watch! I think I might carry hockey stick and a big piece of cardboard.
  20. I agree her speech was good, distorted on some fronts, but that is politics, the other side has done it too... the line about Wasilla comparing it to Scranton at town of 72,400 + a small city is goofy. But I understand why it was done. It was an attack speech, but what policy does she stand for. I would like to hear more about substance, what would she do for special needs children? I have one, so tell me. Not just that you support them, noice, I can support them too, that and a quarter won't get me a cup of coffee or help me with all his needs.
  21. For right now, I am pretty stunned by the varicity of the lefties on this board, don't think I have ever seen it at this level. If this is an indicator, the right is in trouble. Despite an impressive speech with fighting words, the left isn't backing down. Should be an interesting fall. But I am still watching football tonight. P.S. Remember Pitbulls don't discriminate between who they bite, they just bite. watch out Republicans!
  22. The answer to your question is no, but there is a threshold where deficits and debt matter. Not sure where it is, would love to see an economists take. From what I remember talking to some economists on the Hill no more than 50% of revenue on the and no more than 200% of debt. Increases the cost of money... real interest rates. So as far as that particular town in AK, I need more info. Also was the debt systemic or just short-term. What was the interest rate the town was paying, was it secured? All questions to answer before any judgment is made. But you already knew all that.
  23. I agree Bill, Peter just screwed his entire career. Too bad. Oh well, guess he will sit for three years and get fat. The Bills need to move on. I hope you are right about Evan, or we could trade him or just keep drafting wide receivers. Either way, the Bills need to move on. Wish I could make what Peters is making now, just one year and I could retire.
