Vontae Davis Among Bills' Inactives Today

LOL. The Bills wipe their posteriors with $47,000 checks. Vontae being old and slow is the incentive to sit him... -
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he retired and moved on to the family business with Grampa Jack...

Big whoop. The Bills being bad is a cheap excuse for Sully being lazy and boring. Other columnists (Felser, Ranallo, Kelley) covered bad teams for years and never phoned it in like Sully did over the past decade. Columnists in other cities with bad teams (Will McDonough and the Pats in the 1970s and 80s) never did either. Sully was two faced and dishonest, as those with memories long enough to remember his columns can attest. He slagged the Bills for not extending Fitzpatrick, then slagged them for locking him up. He hailed hiring Tom Donahoe and later said it was the dumbest move ever. He was all for signing Drew Bledsoe, then he wasn't. Over and over, rinse and repeat. And he knew he could get away with it because the average fan was just like "Rex," the fictional drinking buddy he used in many of his columns. I get a sense that Jerry's defenders are part of the barstool crowd he was writing for. If that's the case, I guess he did his job...

His receiving ability is what sets him apart, IMO. He's a dual threat like Thurman was and is the perfect weapon for today's NFL... Not buying it. The Bills during much of Felser's run were even more abismal. Outside of the AFL years, OJ era and the Chuck Knox cup of coffee, they were some of the worst teams ever. Good columnists don't have to be defined by the teams they cover. They're good because they respect their readers and put in the work needed to entertain and inform regardless of the jamokes on the field...

Cardinals Work Out Corey Coleman

Chosen Rosen!! Yee ha! -
On impulse, I bought a ticket to tonight's game against the Devils' prospects. This prospect group looks really interesting, especially the top two forward lines and top 4 defense. For the first time in about a decade, I'm actually excited to watch some Sabres hockey. I just hope it's not another case of Lucy taking the ball away from Charlie Brown...

I'm at the head of the anti-Sully brigade, but I agree that he can write well. The problem is, I've never cared for his output. In fact, a case could be made that he wasted his writing talent by taking the lazy, "drunk on a bar stool" approach rather than doing the hard work to be among the best at his profession. A paragraph from Matthew Fairburn's piece on Josh Allen in today's Athletic really resonates here: "...There’s no question about that, you learn the amount of work or preparation that’s necessary to give yourself a chance to be successful. Some of these guys have been so successful in the collegiate careers without doing the legendary work of the Mannings or the Bradys or the Breeses of the world.…I do think the ones who make it recognize and realize after a while that it’s not an easy chore. I have some God-given abilities but there’s a heckuva lot of work that goes into this thing. Some of them don’t realize it. Some of them never do.”

Wow! This is almost the exact opposite of how I remember Felser. Almost like Kurosawa's Rashomon. As I recall, Felser had a ton of contacts around the league and used them to augment his columns with other points of view and insider knowledge. He was old school, which may have failed him when media outlets started to favor snark commentary late in his career. But he'd forgotten more about football than Sully ever knew when he retired and the downhill trajectory of Bills columns in the BN was set in motion...

Felser had the football chops and league-wide contacts to explain the points he was making in his negative columns. Sully wrote for the "drunk on a bar stool" fanbase because he had no real understanding of the game and never developed any contacts to help offset that limitation. Put another way, one guy was a dedicated craftsman who was thankful for his job and loved doing it. The other was a lazy hack who looked down on his readers and thought he could just phone it in...

Why is everyone talking up the Ravens in the National Media

Nope. Last regular season meeting was in 2016 and the Bills lost 13-7. -

Agree to disagree. Baltimore's strengths (pass rush, INTs, power running game) match up well with Buffalo's weakness (pass protection, Peterman's arm strength, Edmunds lack of experience). Flacco may be a shell of his former self but he's got a better WR group this year and something to prove--which should be more than enough in week 1. -

The only thing about this post that's relevant. The Ravens were 9-7 last year, had a very good draft and have a favorable schedule outside their division. They should be in the playoff mix again, while the Bills will struggle to win six games. Not much to see here... -
