Mayberry mourns...Andy Griffith has passed away
Taro T replied to Buftex's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That one and his cliff's notes of Shakespeare plays are classics. (He's no Bob Newhart, but he's good. ) Guess Barney can finally get his one bullet back from Andy again and he can get the keys back from Andy to allow Otis out after one of his benders. Heaven's finally safe again, though Danny Thomas might want to watch out for the speedtraps. RIP Sheriff Taylor. -
Sabres trade: Roy to Dallas for Ott, Pardy
Taro T replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in Off the Wall Archives
Roy didn't fit in LT plans. Sabres have Ennis, Hodgson, and soon (1-2 years from now) Grigorenko will be ready for some serious minutes at C. A tough SOB that takes quality 3rd line minutes and wins faceoffs (though officially a LW) is a good fit for something the Sabres were lacking. -
Oddly enough the only 2 leather bound comic strip collections I have. Thought I had all the Bloom County books and ~1/2 of the hardcover books that Breathed put out. (Though the story books and the Outland/Opus collections weren't nearly as good as the original B.C. strips.) But see I completely missed him putting out the full series over the last couple of years. I'm also missing One Last Little Peek, 1980-1995 and haven't ever seen either Acadamia Waltz book in print.

Sorry, but a partisan hack saying 'trust me' doesn't cause me to automatically trust them. EDIT: Much like your buddy flj2nd stating essentially 'it's the exact same thing they did in the Arizona immigration case,' doesn't make me automatically believe them. Especially when he was flat out wrong. You're posting here and stating 'trust me' when you have displayed no credetials to cause me to trust you wastes both our time. I was hoping that somebody with a legal background might opine on the original question. You admit yourself that finding the answer 'would take some searching;' when there are several lawyers already on this board, why not ask the opinion of an expert who might be able to point me towards some good examples? How exactly does you saying 'trust me' make ME the lazy one? -
At the time Obamacare was getting passed? As for the polls, until the debates I don't put a whole lot of stock into them. I fully expect this to be close until ~mid-Ocotober and then it will break hard for one of them and the final result won't look close.

Not to pull a NJ Sue, but I don't suppose you have some examples of the 'countless times' that has 'absolutely' happened in the past? -

Wrong. Arizona SB 1070: That law did include a severability clause, so that if part of it was invalid the rest could stand. -
Wasn't that what people on your side of the aisle were saying in mid-2010?

Question: have there been other laws that lack a 'severability clause' that have had a portion of the law struck down (section dealing w/ States' Medicaid) but the rest of the law remains valid? I wasn't aware of any, but am by no means a constitutional scholar or historian. If there weren't, has the SCOTUS just given itself a 'line item veto' of sorts? -
It'll be interesting to see how this win for the President turns out in the end. He's just lost one of his major boogie men (SCOTUS) to campaign against and now the majority that oppose Obamacare realize that if they want to see it gone w/in the next 5 years they will have to vote the President out of office. I expect you are correct that this ruling will galvanize those who oppose Obamacare. Way too early to tell, but it could definitely end up one of those 'win the battle, lose the war' sort of deals.

Illegal Immigration Takes Its Toll

It is mindboggling that anyone argues against that. Yes, I mean you, Mr. Holder. -
People don't get "net worth" vs "income"

He probably worked for the NYS Thruway Authority in a past life. 'Why am I getting Call EZ-Pass notices when taking a 1 exit trip on the Thruway with the brand new tag you sent me; the one where the paperwork that came with it says it's all ready to go?' 'We can't activate your new tag because you have a negative balance.' 'What do you mean there's a negative balance, the balance is $3.97?' 'Right, that's below $4 and is therefore negative and you can't get a tag activated with a negative balance.' '$3.97 is greater than $0, right?' 'Yes, but it's negative. And because you were using an inactive tag, your account will get charged a max toll trip.' 'But the account is in good standing and my other tag works, and now I'm going to have a true negative balance because I used the tag like it was supposed to be used?' 'Yes, but once your account is no longer negative we can adjust the max toll off your account and then you can use the tag.' -
Undercover reporter discovers she doesn't like to work hard

I remember having friends with Poli Sci majors having significant trouble landing a job back in the '80's and early 90's when the economy was going good. Glad you've now found something in your career field but not surprised that it took a long time to find it with the economy the way it is. Teaching majors that refuse to leave NYS upon graduation also have difficulties finding a job even in good times. -

And they didn't do ANYTHING to fix the economics of healthcare. They came up with what is (likely) an unconstitutional adjustment to the health INSURANCE system. The law that was passed had nothing to do with fixing healthcare. And, no, healthcare is NOT the economy. It's a big chunk of it, but had they been pursuing growth policies rather than pushing towards a progressive's utopia, he would have had 8 years with a democratic congress to work towards his progressive's utopia rather than the 22 months he got. -

My guess is that having it overturned is the best outcome from the President's re-election standpoint. Because it won't come across as - we wasted 18 months ramming something uncostitutional through the system when we should have been focused primarily on the economy and national security, it'll be spun as you'd mentioned and the big media are already looking for a story to replace F&F. -
The MERC, Sears, and several other major corporations being already based there wouldn't have anything to do with Chicago 'holding it's own' now would it? How's the rest of Illinois doing? Kind of analagous to NYC and the rest of NYS. Policies that don't crush Chicago simply due to what it already is don't do much to help the rest of the state. And how much better do you think it could be doing if it actually reined in some of it's corruption?

Unbelievably sad video out of Greece...NY
Taro T replied to Buftex's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
But think of the teachers, firemen, and police officers we could hire if Apple weren't raping the consumer to reap such obscene profits. Those profits came from society and society deserves a proper share of them, think of the children. And because Apple is still profiting, they clearly aren't paying their proper, ahem, fair share. -

While he's at it, maybe he could ask them why Apple's windfall profits are good but other companies' windfall profits are bad.
