Let's get the economy moving again
Taro T replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
But it works for Chavez, so it's all good, right? -
Maybe after that play failed to garner the sympathy they'd've expected, they could have taken to burning tires on the highway. It drums up support down in Salamanca.

I hope you and your siblings throw one heck of a party every Mother's Day. Congratulations to her and you. As others have stated, far better than I can, that is an inspirational story.

President Obama Decries National Security Leaks
Taro T replied to Taro T's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Thus the subtitle to the thread. Hope I'm wrong, but the answer to the question seemed quite insincere. "I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here." -
President Obama Decries National Security Leaks
Taro T replied to Taro T's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
It'll be interesting to see if this story 'gets legs' and if so, how the administration reacts to it. The President was quite indignant at the accusation that the leaks are coming from the White House, but all preliminary indications are that that's where they come from. I'd figured that if Romney were to win the election it'd be because of the economy. That'll be a major part of his victory, should it happen, but if the MSM does take up this story and it turns out the leaks were from the WH would that be the item to keep blue collar democrats home on November 6? -
Better luck next year Steve.

President Obama Decries National Security Leaks
Taro T replied to Taro T's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Press conference was over when I started the thread. -
Listening to the President's press conference right now. He just got asked a question about the leaks about Stuxnet, the Kill List, additional info and what he thinks about it. (Very last question he took.) Claims that they're trying to track any leaks down, realizes that they're dangerous to the personnel in the field, that the leaks are NOT from the White House, and that he wants to prosecute any leakers. Anyone buying it? Sorry, don't have a link to it.

Mike Ramsey Neil Broten Dave Christian Those 3 all played at least 1,000 games in the NHL and made at least 1 all star game. Ken Morrow was a stay at home D-man and won 4 stanley cups w/ the Isles. Several others were in the NHL a bit longer than for just a cup of coffee. (Apologies to Jim Craig, who was only up there long enough for 1 and Mike Eruzione that never did get there. Though he broadcast Rags games for a long time.)

Because the ONLY reason cigarettes are taxed so highly is because they cause lung cancer. Booze doesn't cause lung cancer so it isn't taxed as highly. According to pot smokers, there's never been a single case of lung cancer associated with MJ. So, MJ will be taxed like booze. Quid pro ergo.

Bummer. He and Authur C. Clarke were 2 of my favorite authors. RIP Ray. -
Those Euler teams always get an asterisk in my book. The teams out west let them play their firewagon brand of hockey and never made them actually have to play hockey. In '83, they thought they could just run around the ice and not work for it and got their lunches handed to them by the Isles. Heck, I'd've expected them to learn their lesson the previous year when they allowed the 'Miracle on Manchester' to happen; but they didn't. They learned their lesson after '83, but it never changed the fact that they didn't have to play anybody real until the Finals. They couldn't get it done against the Flames in '86 and they only played a 'real' hockey team on their way to the Finals one other time - in '88 against the Flames (and they still had the memory of '86 fresh in their minds; that and the chip on their collective shoulders of showing they WERE more than just Gretzky). By the time the Eulers got to the Finals, they got to face a team that had to fight to get to the Finals. The teams from the East had always gone through a much tougher slog to get to the show. I will give the Eulers credit, in that after '83 they were willing to play a Wales Conference type of game when they got to the Finals and were able to do it (at least for 1 round). They were very good, but I won't rank them with the all time greats. That '77 Habs squad had offense and defense. They were all around solid. And they had better than 1 GPG goals against than the next best team that playoff year. They only lost 1 game at home the entire season. No team ever dominated a season from start to finish like they did that year.

'76-'77 Canadiens. Went 60-8-12 in the regular season for 132 points. Next best were the Phlyers at 112 points. (Equivalent to 10 fewer wins, they actually had 12 fewer wins but had a few extra ties.) Had 64 more goals than the 2nd best goal scoring team and gave up 18 fewer goals than the 2nd best defensive team. Went 12-2 in the playoffs and 1 of those 2 losses was in OT. Only 1 of their 12 wins was in OT. Had about 8 HoFers on the roster and the winningest coach of all time and one of the best GM's of all time. Had the 1st All-Star at 4 positions and the 2nd team AS at another. The only position they didn't have an AS at was center (LA's Marcel Dionne and Buffalo's Gil Perreault took those honors) and Jacques Lemaire and Pete Mahovolich were solid at that spot as well. And in baseball, to not even mention the '75 Reds or '27 Yanks seems strange. My vote would go to the Reds but I'd expect most would go w/ the Babe's team.

About 5:45PM EST today, the planet Venus will pass between the Earth and the Sun. It last happened in 2004 and won't happen again until 2117. NASA is supposed to have a live webcast for those that don't have 'solar eyeglasses' or welder's lenses available to them. The NASA channel on DTV is talking about it now. EDIT: You can also see it live at this link: Linky EDIT 2: I could see it looking through two #10 glass filter plates. It's just in front of the disk of the sun at ~1 o'clock position.

Does Obama deserve political credit for getting Bin Laden?
Taro T replied to Juror#8's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
If he did that, that's great. But there is a big difference between 'adding value' and drawing up the actual plan. If the 'military official's' version is correct, then the President kept one of his campaign promises and that sounds quite plausible. Without knowing whether the 'White House officials' included Axelrod and his ilk, I'll take the rest of the story with a grain of salt. If the President did make the suggestion that his people claim, then good for him and good for the troops. If he didn't, it still was a job well done. -

Of course there's more to it than that and it's setting up a strawman argument to claim anybody was making any claims that that's all there is to it. What most people would consider 'making the decision and then delegating the implementation' involves more that you seem willing to admit. The President should be choosing the strategy (not necessarily developing it, but choosing it) and getting the hell out of the way of the tactical, operational aspects of implementing that strategy. (And yes, before you go claiming that I'm stating that he shouldn't be involved in choosing whether to off bin laden via drone strike or boots on the ground, he should be involved in that. He shouldn't be involved in the nuts and bolts of how they go into the compound. Leave that decision to somebody that actually knows what they're doing.) -

You seem to be taking issue with Juror's statement just to take issue. There is a big difference between leading and micromanaging. Your statements above make it appear that you understand this distinction, so I'm not certain why you are upset with Juror's statement. Even if Eisenhower were still President, I wouldn't want him handling the details of this operation as he has far too many other things to be dealing with daily. The President should deal with the decisions and delegate the details. -

Taro T replied to Juror#8's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The 1st bolded sentence I will agree with. The last 2, I disagree with. I absolutely don't want a politician qb'ing every last detail. Keep him abreast of the situation and let him make the decision to pursue or not to pursue, but he has no background to be micromanaging the situation. And the current President hasn't even served in the military, so he has even less background. He rightfully left the details up to those qualified to address them. -
You're going to blot out Match Game 74 and Match Game 75? Bummer. RIP Dickie Dawson

Bummer. It's cool that you have so many good memories of your brother. I'd expect his boys will appreciate you bringing up stories of those memories when you get together in the future.

Yes, there should be restrictions on voting, namely 1 adult citizen 1 vote maximum. Voter ID laws help to enforce this restriction. And, yes, turnout will most likely go down as it is made more difficult for people to vote multiple times. I find it absolutely hysterical that DoJ which argues against voter ID laws requires people to show ID to enter their headquarters. Holy hypocrisy Batman!

The advice is correct, but the history is off slightly. Back when the games were shown on NBC, the games were NOT blacked out in the Syracuse market. So, if you lived in a place that got the Ra-cha-cha and Syracuse signals, you might be able to pick up 6 different games over the air if the Bills were blacked out locally. (3 non-Bills/non-Jints games from Ra-cha-cha stations, and Bills, Jints, and another random game from Syracuse.) When the networks changed, Syracuse and Baton Rouge both got caught in blackout zones that they previously avoided. Syracuse was included due to the small strip of land (7 houses and 1 closed restaurant IIRC) near a finger lake that was included in the southwestern corner of it's market which was alluded to above and fell within 75 miles of Rich Stadium. About 2 years later, that strip of land was deemed to now belong to the Ra-cha-cha market, but the NFL (Ralph Wilson, cough, cough) would not allow Syracuse to broadcast the Bills games. Most likely explanation for that being that Ralph was still upset that his suit against McGregor's for illegally showing the Bills game in Monroe County got thrown out when they could prove that they received the games legally using a 'rabbit ears' feed from Syracuse.
