In the grand scheme of things 2024 is right around the corner. In the world of politics, that's 3 full Presidential election cycles away, which is nearly an eternity away.

Wow. Dellapelle back. Nozzlenut back. conner back. Now Pasta Joe back. Can pbills be far behind? Any possibility we could make a trade for Kelly or Coli coming back instead? -
Does Obama deserve political credit for getting Bin Laden?

And, just as he deserves a measure of credit for the mission occurring on his watch, he deserves a healthy dose of criticism for the problems this will create. -
Does Obama deserve political credit for getting Bin Laden?
Taro T replied to Juror#8's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The President deserves credit for Bin Laden getting offed on his watch. Though he also deserves the flack he's gotten for releasing as much info about the raid as happened and releasing the info as quickly as it happened. Those who are saying that 'anyone would have done the same thing' are correct assuming the same set of circumstances. (Provided the set 'anyone' does NOT include Joe Biden. ) It's possible somebody else would have made different decisions that would have led to the same circumstances not setting up though I don't expect that would have been the case with this one. As for McCain specifically, As I recall, his comments were more in the context of whether he'd consider bombing Pakistan as more of a larger scale campaign. I don't expect that his views on handling relations with Pakistan would have carried over to this one, especially after having had over 2 years of dealing with the Pakistani's 'help' on other matters were it to have been his decision to make. Though the guys that deserve the real credit are the ones that gathered the intel, planned, and executed the mission; and the President will get more than his fair share; he does deserve credit for it. Kind of like how without the O-linemen, the D, and the gameplanning the QB can't win the SB; he's still going to be the one that gets the credit for it. Just because you get more credit than you deserve, doesn't mean you don't deserve any credit. -

Only if I get to make the case for Wish You Were Here. Of the 2 to choose from, I'd lean towards The Dark Side of the Moon. That album fits into better memories for me than does The Wall. Add in Dick Parry on sax and Clare Torry >>> Toni Tenille and I'd definitely go with TDSOTM. Saw Waters play The Wall last time he came through town. It is amazing, you're in for a VERY good show. My wife, who REALLY dislikes The Wall thought the show was fantastic.

Very saddened to learn of your loss. The vet gave good advice. Bernie's in a better place thanks to your making that difficult decision.

Now THAT'S funny. How much less reliable must Scoobie's sources be if they make DailyKos look mainstream?
-
In fairness to him, there must be a DailyKos poll or an Olbermann rant somewhere stating that Walker is looking to get smoked in June. How's he supposed to know those MIGHT not be accurate?

Earthquakes, in North Dakota?!?! If you are worried about earthquakes in North Dakota then you must be against all oil exploration. The place isn't totally earthquake free but it's pretty darn close. Also, you appear to be decrying the work camps for not using permanent housing and also being concerned with reduced need for construction and services after the drilling boom is over (which, as mentioned previously, is one reason for using temporary housing in the drilling camps). Oh, no, there's unsightly drilling camps in the middle of nowhere. There's a reason they call it 'the middle of nowhere;' there aren't a whole lot of people that see them. Out in the Dakotas, Montana, and Wyoming you can literally drive for miles without seeing a house. I truly doubt that the majority of the drilling camps are set up right next to the town hall or the school. There are problems that crop up with some of the camps, but the benefits outweigh the negatives.

Romney airing his first general elections ad
Taro T replied to dayman's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Do you expect that if you repeat this often enough you'll get someone other than yourself to believe it? The polls will be close until 2-3 weeks before the election and then they will break heavily for 1 of the 2 and we'll end up with an electoral map like either '88 or '96. If the economy doesn't improve significantly, things will break Mitt's way; if it does improve significantly, it'll be 4 more years. Right now, if I had to guess, I'd expect that it'll break Romney's way. The President is acting far less presidential than any other sitting incumbant I can recall in my lifetime. Whether that's due to him not having the temperament to be graceful or due to him being nervous about his prospects in November, it doesn't bode well for him. What does bode well for him is that he has ~6 more months to come up with a narrative that does appear presidential and if the electorate sees him 'getting better' the 1st derivative of how his performance is tracking will likely be given greater weight than the actual performance. -
Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to check it out next weekend. Never knew the old K.A.O.S. dj had his own show on Sirius. Which is kind of cool too.

A lot of these camps are going up in Montana also. Which is a place that a lot of the locals end up living in trailers as well because they can't afford to own land. Land values shot up in the '90's when a lot of out of staters bought up land at exorbitant rates because they could and priced a lot of the locals out of the market. It also probably makes more sense to set up trailers for a large percentage of the workers to live in rather than build houses as the people need the accomodations now rather than a few months from now (or would you prefer to house the workers in tents) and a lot of the jobs (though clearly not all) are directed towards setting up the infrastructure to extract the oil; once that is set you don't need as many workers remaining in the field. No point in building only permanent housing when the demand will drop significantly in the future. There will be continuing jobs in the oil fields in the future, and at least in areas that land prices remain reasonable it's reasonable to expect to see permanent dwellings going up eventually. Where land is too expensive, you'll see much nicer trailers setting up. I don't see where living in a trailer is that big of a point.

Thanks for starting the thread Millbank. Never met him in person but spoke with him often over on 'the dark side.' He is missed. RIP GoBiB.

The Buffett Rule in effect will be REGRESSIVE, at least for the people you are trying to stick it to.

Isn't that redundant? -
You do realize, don't you, that were the Buffett Rule to pass, Warren's tax rate would become even lower, right? That's kind of the point of the 'including not disadvantaging individuals who make large charitable contributions.'

Oh, I generally agree with the sentiment about fans not 'deserviving' a championship. But I disagree w/ the last sentence. Those 12 Canes fans are, for the most part, d-bags. Though the 20 or so Cats fans are alright in my book.

I prefer the version of that one where a young man is asking his girlfriend's father for her hand in marraiage. The father responds to the young man, "I'm impressed that you've asked me for her hand, you're a fine upstanding young man, but before I give you 2 my blessing there's something I think you should know. My daughter has acute angina." "Oh, that's ok" the young man replies, "I already know that. She's got great breasts too."

Nice list. Mine would probably be: 1 - Talley 2 - Chandler 3 - Andre Reed 4 - Lou Piccone (more or less just a special teamer, but it was cool to hear the 'Looooooooouuuu.') 5 - Reggie McKenzie With honorable mentions (in no particular order) Christie, Tasker, Hull, Smerlas, Haslett, Nelson, Pat Williams, Thurman, Bentley, Stevie, Freddie, Lofton, & Jerry Butler. Somebody posted that they liked Cribbs. I've never been able to get over his jumping ship to the USFL and then ending up w/ the Fish.

The President Is Up By Eight In Virginia
Taro T replied to Dave_In_Norfolk's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
My expectation is that the popular vote will go about 52%-48%. I also expect that the polls will have the electoral map very tight until about 2-3 weeks out and then 1 candidate will pull ahead and win fairly handily. And which one pulls ahead will be the one that the question to the masses breaks for: are you any better off today than you were 4 years ago? Right now, it doesn't look like that question will be answered positively for the incumbant. That could change significantly in 6 months though I don't see how at this time.
