Offensive Line Draft picks are more successful
smapdi replied to D. L. Hot-Flamethrower's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem is, we don't have Aaron Rodgers at them moment. This team is all in on EJ Manuel this season. They also aren't going be a passing offense. I don't know about you, but I'm looking for immediate progress & playoffs this season. I'm sick of missing out. IMO, the defense is good enough to be a playoff unit. Adding that premiere tackle sets us up for success in a variety of ways: - Immediate improvement to the worst unit of our offense - Gives our young QB (whom they are dead set on; like it or not) more time - Will improve the running the game which is this team's go-to on offense. CJ Spiller has the talent to be an elite back. We just need a line to help open things up. - If Manuel busts this season, we have the pieces in place for a new QB to be successful Call me old fashioned but I still feel like games are won and lost in the trenches. Just look at how badly our line was abused last season. If you can dominate at the line, things become much easier for everyone else. Going into the offseason, my idea for this draft was playmaking WR, OT, TE in the first 3 rounds. Stealing Mike Williams takes care of adding a playmaking WR. Now it comes down to what the best value is of OT vs TE in rounds 1 and 2. Give me Matthews or Lewan and then Niklas or ASJ instead of Ebron and ???? Niklas is the best in-line blocker in this TE class by far and is just getting started. He is a much better blocker then Ebron and a better redzone threat. Ebron only had 3 TE's and was used more as a split out, over sized WR. Niklas is you more traditional TE and is almost another OT out there at 6'6" / 270. -

I think the Williams trade was a stroke of genius for Whaley. Improving the o-line was definitely up there for TB, who pick at 7. Acquiring Williams makes Evans a much more enticing play for them now at 7 then going OT IMO. They pretty much have Vjax and nobody @ WR. I really do feel that one of the top 3 linemen will be there for us @ 9. I personally would rate them: Robinson, Matthews, Lewan. I know a lot of people have questions regarding Lewan's off the field stuff but I don't think that is a major concern. I love the fact he is a very nasty OT that finishes his blocks & makes opposing players pay. We need some more of those guys on this team. With near 100% certainty these players will be gone: 1.Clowney 2.Manziel 3.Watkins 4.Bridgewater/Bortles 5.Mack 6.Robinson So that is 6 players if only 2 QB's go in the top 8. I have a hard time believing a team like HOU or CLE will pass on a QB with their first pick. I feel like Manziel is a lock in the top 8. Then if OAK gets that itch, that's 3 QB's in the top 8. MIN could also desperately use a QB so you can't rule them out. But let's just say 2 go in the top 8 for the sake of this argument. So that brings us to TB. I think Evans is their target so that brings us to 7 That scenario leaves us with either Matthews or Lewan. As another poster proposed, if all 3 OT's are gone, then that most likely means someone very enticing drops. -

If all 3 of the top OTs then its a whole different ball game. That would likely mean someone very enticing would drop. If Mack is there, I'd take him. I'm not sold on Martin & wouldn't spend a top 10 pick on him. I'm on my phone right now so I can't really work everything out but I'd say there is about a 90% chance one of the top 3 OTs is there at 9 -
That's how I'm leaning. This team is going to be very run-oriented. We need to improve the line first and foremost- they just weren't good enough last season by a mile. Getting someone like Robinson or Matthews in the 1st instantly gives us 2 stud bookend OT's for the next decade, improves our run and pass blocking, & adds versatility (Matthews can play any position on the line.. even long snap) Then grabbing Niklas in the 2nd gives us the best of the both worlds. TE is our second biggest need behind o-line. Niklas is the most dominating blocker of this TE class. He is one of the few that actually played along the line and has the size to take on DE's (6'6 / 270lb): Very few of these top TE's have experience blocking in-line. A Matthews/Niklas combo really would vault this offense into a new level. Niklas has that Gronkowski type body and would be an absolute beast in the redzone. Adding him with Mike Williams gives us two new redzone weapons & still lets us upgrade the line

I would argue that RT is just as important as LT in today's game. The best defenses have 2 great pass rushers & you nneed to be able block both. I'm looking towards building a Superbowl contender.. Not just getting by. Secondly, all 3 of those top OTs have the ability to play LT. What happens if Glenn goes down with an injury? I'd feel a lot better moving over Matthews or Lewan to play LT (your self proclaimed most important position on the line) then some 3rd round RT prospect who *might* just be good enough to play RT. This team isn't just short a single RT for a great line. We need more depth. Another reason to take a guy like Matthews is the fact he can play every single spot on the line. Versatility is a major selling point of the big 3. You suggest taking Ebron but I just don't think he makes that big of an impact. Especially after they grabbed Mike Williams. Optimistically, Ebron would catch 50 balls. I don't see this offense airing it out like NO or DEN. We already have a full house of pass catchers with Mike Williams on board. Yes, TE is a need but I'd prefer someone like Niklas out of ND who is a dominating blocker. He should be there for us in the 2nd. Matthews or Lewan will make an impact on every single offensive snap. Matthews started 46 games in the SEC & dominated. Give me Matthews @ 9 & then ASJ or Niklas in the 2nd instead of Ebron @ 9 and some significantly less talented OT in the 2nd or 3rd -
Is Stevie expendable now that we got Williams?
smapdi replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That is what I love about this pickup. There aren't too many 6th rounders that can make a play like that. Really highlights what type of player Williams is: He goes up and gets the ball over the top of the CB, battles for the ball, and then uses his speed to break away & take it 62 yards to the house. That is WR1 type stuff right there. Plays like that is why they gave him 40 million dollars. This offense is desperate for playmaking WR's that can score TD's & Williams can do it all. Kid has 25 TD's in 4 seasons (1 of which he only played 3 games). I really love this move by Whaley. -

I know RT is about the least sexy pick but this kid has immediate impact from day 1 written all over him. He is the perfect storm for what you want from a top 10 pick: -Immediate impact -Started 46 games in the best conference in the NCAA- SEC -Experience at RT and LT; can also play interior -Extremely durable -Plays with a mean streak Improving this offensive line is priority #1 with the addition of Mike Williams. We have all the pieces in place to have a very good offense: WR1: Mike Williams WR2: Robert Woods WR3: Stevie Johnson WR4: Marquise Goodwin WR5: TJ Graham That is one hell of a WR corp. Stevie will dominate from the slot. We have 2 very good outside WR's with the addition of Williams (potential to be a WR1). Deep threats in Goodwin & Graham Then you have one of the most dynamic playmakers in the league with CJ Spiller. Should return to his 6.0 ypc form with an upgraded line. A OT like Matthews excels getting into the 2nd level & should make our screen game close to unstoppable with Spiller. FJax is FJax. We now have Dixon to get those tough short yardage yards. Upgrading RT is the most important piece left. We need defenses to believe Manuel can get the ball down the field so things open up for Spiller/FJax. Matthews or Lewan can come in from day 1 & do that. There really isn't any other position that could impact the quality of this team like adding a blue-chip RT would do for this offense -

The top 3 OT's seem to be your best bet for "sure-fire" contribution to team success year 1. Skill position players, especially WR's, usually have a period of getting used to the NFL & that level on competition. They need to learn an entirely new playbook/system & can't get by on just their dominating physical attributes which helped them dominate the NCAA. QB's are in the same boat as well; they take a lot of time to get acclimated to the NFL as evidenced by Manuel last season. Offensive linemen face the lowest learning curve. At the most basic level, they go out and block the player in front of them. They don't need to learn complicated routes or plays (for the most part) of a NFL playbook. Greg Robinson, Jake Matthews, or Taylor Lewan could come in & start from day 1. All 3 of them have a bunch of college starts under their belt & should be ready to help improve their new offensive lines immediately. Look at how Glenn was able to contribute his rookie season and really not skip a beat. This immediate impact is one of the reasons I am leaning towards going OT @ 9. On top of that, RT is now this team's most dire need with the addition of Mike Williams to our WR corp. The offensive line needs a lot of help & we should come out of this draft with a bare minimum of 2 new players. What happens if Cordy Glenn goes down? I do not want to see Eric Pears playing any major part of this team. Manuel needs to be protected so he can develop properly & have time to throw the ball. I don't want to say he is injury prone yet but he suffered 3 separate injuries last season. The running game is also going to be their bread and butter apparently so improving the run blocking is key. -
You would think he was the prime suspect in a murder investigation with the way some posters are making him out to be. From what I've read, his neighbors really disliked him. He's a 20 something NFL star; of course he is going to throw some wild parties. Yea, the dude likes to party but who didn't when they were in college/early 20's. The stabbing incident was supposedly "horse play" between brothers. Mike wasn't the one who stabbed somebody.. He got stabbed by his brother. Our head coach is also very familiar with him on a personal level: he coached him @ Syracuse so I'm sure Marrone knows exactly what type of person he is. No way they make this deal without Marrone giving him the thumbs up. If all the Debbie downers are right, the Absolute worst case scenario is they cut him. He only costs 1.8 million & 6th round picks usually end up cut anyways. This was a very shrewd move by Whaley & shows me that the Bills' finally have a new sheriff in town in the FO. I have a feeling this move is this seasons Jerry Hughes for Kelvin Sheppard
-
Are we talking about the same person? We traded a 6th round pick for Mike Williams- he is 6'2" / 212lb with a 34" vertical. He is definitely not "average size" Go watch is 2012 highlight reel where he wins numerous jump balls to pull in TDs... He has 25 TD so far in just 4 seasons and he missed almost all of one of those seasons. He is a proven starting WR in the prime of his career @ only 26 years old. He is only costing us 1.8 million this season. All of that for a 6th round pick is highway robbery by Whaley. It also forces TB hand in the 1st: they will prob draft Evans therefore dropping someone good to us.
-
Agreed. I think way too many people are taking the whole "deepest draft" thing way too far. Some talking heads claimed there are starting OT's in the 4th round.. not anyone I would want starting for the Bills. They need to take a OT in the 1st or 2nd, bottom line. I personally would rather have a blue chipper in the 1st & be set at OT for the next decade. Matthews or Lewan would work for me. I especially like the fact that Lewan is known for his mean streak. This team needs more players like that. Adding Spikes on D was a great move along those lines. Pairing Woods with another nasty linemen would be ideal.
-
I'm not saying his season was anything special this year... it was rather disappointing. 1000 yards isn't anything to brag about in today's NFL. You know what is? Averaging 6.0 yards per carry on over 200 attempts. I don't think all of the stars need to align for Spiller to have a good season. His health doesn't worry me; he'll be back to 100%. The offensive line was clearly broken after losing Levitre; they went out and got Chris Williams to take over at LG & I am almost 100% certain they will take a RT in the 1st or 2nd round to really improve the line. The QB factor also shouldn't be an issue. You don't need Manning or Brees back there; we just need Manuel to stay healthy & play consistent. He just needs to be able to hit some passes down the field & keep the defense guessing. Last year's offense was so one-dimensional and predictable that nobody stood a chance of having a good year. Spiller doesn't need his QB to be a 400 yard stud to be successful; hell, he tore it up with Fitz as his QB. This boggles my mind. You talk about SF and SEA being in the top 5 in rushing and advocate following their model yet you want to trade away our best RB??? Spiller is way more valuable to this team then even a 2nd round pick. Then you go on to say you want use that 2nd round pick on a RB... That is crazy to me. The draft is a total crapshoot. Spiller has proven he can be a stud RB; 6.0 ypc on over 200 rushes is spectacular. Hyde hasn't done a thing in the NFL and might turn out to be James Hardy. Why do they need a "workhorse" RB when they have have Spiller/FJax/Dixon? Spiller's sweet spot is in the 10-15 rushes a game with another 4-5 receptions. Then you have FJax to take the other 10-15 rushes & Dixon as your short yardage bruiser.
-
Great post. For anyone doubting this, just check out this portion of that highlight reel: He out jumps the CB in the endzone for the score. Full extension type out jumping. He used every inch of his 6'2" frame and 34 inch vertical There is almost zero risk for the Bills with this move. Only costs 1.8 million; that is nothing for a potential #1 WR... yes, I do think he has the potential to be a #1 Mike Williams is my favorite 6th round pick of the Bills of last decade

Schefter: Bills tried acquiring Chris Johnson
smapdi replied to SBUffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Spot on. I'm a little taken aback by the amount of Spiller haters. This offense was completely 1 dimensional last season; zero threat from our passing game. When you're starting a rookie or Thad Lewis or Jeff Tuel at QB, defenses know they can stack the box & go after the Bills' most dangerous weapon: CJ Spiller. This completely one dimensional aspect of the offense is what really did this team in. You can't win in today's game when the defense knows that you're going to run the ball because your QB is so inept. Spiller also dealt with injuries (knee, ankle) yet still appeared in 15 games and started 10 of those. The injuries to players around him also had a negative effect. Even with his nagging injuries, defenses' focusing on him completely knowing that Thad Tuel couldn't complete a 10 yard slant, Spiller still managed a respectable season: 202 / 933 / 4.6ypc What really concerned me was that his receptions dropped to only 33- that's barely 2 receptions per game. He needs to be in the 4-5 receptions per game category. Spiller proved he is one of the most deadly players in space & he should have been a main stay in the passing game. Especially with their inexperience at QB- the screen pass and wheel route should have been their young QB's best friends. You don't get rid of Spiller because he doesn't fit into Hackett's scheme; you get rid of Hackett and his terrible scheme if that's how he views a player like Spiller. For Christ's sake, Spiller averaged 6 yards per carry on OVER 200 carries. That is almost unheard of & truly elite production. Yes, he will never be that 300+ carry, ram straight down your throat type RB but that is why you have FJax & Anthony Dixon Once they add a OT in the 1st coupled with the additions of Mike Williams & Chris Williams, and EJ Manuel not being a rookie a healthy Spiller should pick up right where he left off in 2012 -
I understand that this coaching staff didn't draft Spiller but that shouldn't make a lick of difference. He is their most talented and dynamic offensive weapon: 207 carries / 1244 yards / 6.0 ypc / 6 TD 43 receptions / 459 yards / 10.7 ypr / 2 TD Those numbers speak for themselves. Averaging 6 yards per carry is pretty amazing on 50 carries.. Spiller did it on over 200 carries. On top of that, he averaged over 10 yards per reception. That is an elite offensive playmaker. He also wasn't a total bust last season like some posters are portraying him to be. He struggled through injury last season & only managed to start 10 games. There was a revolving door at QB with some of the worst QB play in the NFL allowing defenses to load up the box & focus on shutting down Spiller and FJax: 202 carries / 946 yards / 4.6 ypc / 2 TD Some people are acting like he did nothing & averaged 2.0 ypc. I don't understand how a player that talented "doesn't fit your offense"... take your playbook and throw it in the garbage if you can't fit a player like that into your gameplan. Nothing gets me more aggravated then a coach who force feeds their system onto their players. The hallmark of a great coach is adapting their scheme to their player's strengths. He certainly isn't a 320 carry back but that is why you have FJax. I don't know where you're getting "he isn't anything special in the clutch". The Bills weren't in too many spots to settle that. If Chan Gailey can do it, there is no reason Hackett can't.
-
Couldn't agree more. The addition of Mike Williams really takes the pressure off of grabbing a WR @ 9. RT is their biggest hole on offense now & needs to be addressed. I will never be against drafting linemen high because games are won & lost in the trenches. I am all for grabbing one of the big 3 OT's (Robinson, Matthews, Lewan) in the 1st. I know this draft is deep in tackles but those 3 are elite prospects. Getting a bookend OT to pair with Glenn will solidify our line for the next decade. We invested a 1st in Manuel so let's get him some protection. We allowed way too many sacks last season. We also have one of the best backfields in the league with Spiller & FJax. Marrone & Hackett obviously want to run the ball a lot so adding a talented RT is a no brainer. All 3 of those top tackles are great @ getting to the 2nd level so they could put the screen pass back in the play book. Spiller is at his deadliest on screens & that play was pretty much ignored last season. I don't think the coaches had much confidence in Pears and/or Colin Brown to effectively block in the 2nd level.
-
What is with all of this "trade Spiller" talk ??? WGR spent a significant amount of time discussing moving CJ Spiller & now this thread. It really boggles my mind. Some clowns on the radio were talking about signing Chris Johnson and getting rid of Spiller He is their most talented & dynamic player on offense; it's not even close. Players like Spiller are very difficult to come by which is why the Bills spent a top 10 pick on him. He has the ability to take over a game & is a threat to score a TD EVERY single time the ball touches his hands. If you are considering moving Spiller because he "doesn't fit your offense" then I don't want you as OC. You give a player like Spiller his own chapter in the playbook.

Is Stevie expendable now that we got Williams?
smapdi replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I highly doubt it. The addition of Williams allows them to move Stevie into the slot full time which is where they feel he fits best. Letting Stevie operate out of the slot will really be an asset for this offense. His defining trait is his ability to abuse CB's with his route running; he's an "ankle breaker" to borrow a basketball term. Also, WR's in the slot are much tougher to jam at the line which is another bonus. Then there is the fact he will be facing the defense's nickle back (3rd CB) whom is usually the least talented defensive back on the field. They will have Mike Williams and Robert Woods on the outside with Stevie Johnson wreaking havoc out of the slot. Johnson has the talent to become a Wes Welker type player in that role. Then again, he could be a very valuable asset come draft time for teams desperate for WR help *cough* Carolina *cough*. I said it in the Williams thread: I will take a proven NFL player nearly every time over drafting a kid who has not done a lick against NFL defenses. Stevie is a known commodity that has produced consistently against some of the best CB's the NFL has to offer. You can't say that about Mike Evans or Kelvin Benjamin. I wouldn't just give him away but I would definitely be listening to offers if I was Whaley. -
Absolutely love this move! This is the epitome of low-risk / high reward. Mike Williams is a 6'2" / 212 LB WR in the prime of his career being only 26 years old. 25 TD's in his 4 years at TB with atrocious QB's throwing him the ball; that is the type of production we need from our WR's. In comparison, Stevie has 28 TD's in 6 seasons. Now consider it only cost a 6th round pick... Name the last 6th round pick that has done anything in the last decade for this team?? Call me crazy, but I'd much rather have Williams then spending the 9th overall pick on Mike Evans. I will take proven NFL production every single time over a rookie who is a total unknown. Remember spending a 2nd round pick on James Hardy?... that's just once recent example. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush. Yes, he has some off-field issues but nothing crazy. Marrone knows exactly what type of person he is having been his coach & I'm sure he gave this a go-ahead. Doug Whaley is really impressing me & is already the best GM this team has had in a long time. Moves like this & getting Jerry Hughes (10 sacks) for Kelvin Sheppard are how you build a legitimate NFL contender. I cannot wait to see what he has planned for the draft. I never thought I could get this excited for a draft... it cannot get here fast enough!
-
Would definitely be an interesting move. He doesn't solve our redzone receiving problem so I really seem him taking the place of a current WR. He was playing under a 48 million dollar contract so I'm not sure how much he will be looking for. Only 5'10" but one of the most explosive WR's in the league. Still remember passing over him for James Hardy (ugh). Which is another lesson some fans need to take to heart: just because a WR is big, doesn't necessarily mean he will be a TD machine in the NFL. Hardy had like 36 TD's in college too so it's not like he never had that ability. Signing him and then drafting someone like Ebron in the 1st or ASJ in the 2nd would really open up the passing game.

Houston looking to trade 1st pick (Buffalo?)
smapdi replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it is highly unlikely the Bills would do this. It just doesn't make sense for where they're at in the rebuild; especially considering how deep this draft is. The Bills & Whaley know the draft is the lifeblood of bringing talent to Buffalo so mortgaging draft picks to move up seems unlikely. BUT, playing devil's advocate I can see how this might be intriguing. First, the draft is extremely deep (starting caliber players in 3rd or 4th round) so maybe they feel that giving up their 2nd and/or 3rd round pick isn't the end of the world. Secondly, maybe the Bills have a player that the Texans are highly interested in which could be part of deal & mitigate loss of picks. I really dont know too much about HOU's needs to a Texans' fan would have to chime in. The Bills & Whaley have repeatedly praised Manuel & stated they are open to drafting any position other then QB. They seem very high on EJ & just spent a 1st on him last year. He had an injury plagued rookie year so I don't see them giving up on him already. I just don't see them moving up to take a QB. None of these guys really jump off the paper like Luck or RG3 did. Those guys were locks & I just dont see that in this QB class. I'm totally against this move if they going to take anyone other then Clowney. I love Mack but he isn't worth the top pick playing in this defense. The only player that makes sense to me in this scenario is Clowney. The more I think about it, the more I would love to see them make that happen if the price is right. Whaley learned his craft in PIT so he knows defense can win championships. Then you have SEA dominating the "unstoppable" DEN offense with their stellar defense. Maybe Whaley feels that adding Clowney would put this team over the top. You only do a move like this for a sure fire, elite talent. Clowney has been called a once in a generation type talent at DE which is coincidentally our biggest hole on defense atm. We dont have a sure fire starter opposite Mario in Schwartz's scheme which relies heavily on the d-line producing pressure on their own with out blitzing. Just imagine the 6'6" / 275 LB athletic freak of Clowney to this defensive front: Mario Williams 6'7" / 290lb LDE - 13.5 sacks Kyle Williams 6'1" / 320lb DT - 10.5 sacks Marcel Dareus 6'3" / 335lb DT - 7.5 sacks J. Clowney 6'6" / 275lb RDE Then you have Jerry Hughes to spell @ DE or OLB with 10 sacks That would be the best defensive line in the league. Schwartz doesn't like to blitz & wouldnt have to with that front 4... I'm getting a hard on just thinking about it. The addition of Spikes & Rivers should really improve the run d so DE is the biggest hole they have on d right now Keep things simple on offense with big doses of Spiller/FJax & let the defense do its thing. SEA proved that if you have a dominating defense & good running game, you can go a long way. We should be able to get a RT in the 3rd or 4th who could be an upgrade over Pears. It also appears Hairston maybe back & he looked very promising b4 injuries derailed him -
Now I LOVE Brandon Spikes. I'm not a man....
smapdi replied to Webster Guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I absolutely love the Spikes signing for a couple reasons. First off, it fills our biggest hole on defense: run stuffing LB. This defense has the potential to be a top 5 unit.. Only thing holding them back was their terrible rum defense which stemmed from one of the worst LB corp. Spikes only rates out as the top ILB in the entire league over the past Two seasons against the run. Secondly, bringing in a player like Spikes shows me that we finally have a legitimate NFL GM running the show. This team was hamstrung by GM's & coaches like Levy/Jauron/Gailey who only wanted high character, choir boys. Football is a mean sport & I want opposing teams to fear our defense. We need mean mo-fo's like Spikes who love to bring the pain. He is looking to punish opposing players every single play. Even better, we stole him from NE. A 26 year old player in his prime with a massive chip on his shoulder against NE.. Yes please! He's looking to become a team leader & is out to prove he is a 3 down player. What is not to love about this signinh -
I pretty much agree with these sentiments. I've always been a staunch supporter for using first day picks(1st & 2nd now) on big men. 300+ LB, 6'5" big men that have the speed & agility of top shelf NFL linemen don't grown on trees. I absolutely loved the Dareus pick which has begun to pay dividends; he is going to be a force to be reckoned with playing next to Kyle Williams and Mario Williams. You build a successful NFL franchise from the trenches out- just wait and see the dramatic improvement of our LB corp with the addition of Spikes & Rivers playing behind our 3 pro-bowlers up front. I would absolutely love getting Robinson or Matthews to bookend Glenn for the next decade. Problem is, both of those players will be long gone by the time the Bills come on the clock at 9. My biggest draft peeve is "reaching" in the 1st round, let alone the top 10. Your 1st round pick needs to be the BPA that can come in, start, and become a pro-bowl caliber player. Totally agree that the offensive line needs an upgrading. Williams was their FA improvement at LG. RT comes in the top 3 of needs entering the draft. I am just totally against reaching for one in the top 10. A player like Cordy Glenn was waiting for us in the 2nd & from what I gather, this draft is even deeper. I fully trust Whaley & his scouts can find another Glenn in the 2nd or 3rd. When everything is said and done (barring some type of crazy draft day scenario- Mack or Clowney drop to 9), TE, WR, and OT need to be addressed in the top 3 rounds... doesn't have to be in that order. They made the investment in Manuel and now is the time to get him some tools. He already has the best backfield in the AFC. We need to get him a legit, big bodied WR with a huge catch radius as a safety valve. His accuracy has been less then stellar so having some with a large catch radius is a must. I just feel like a TE will see a lot more action this season then a WR will. Pair him up with Chandler to gives us one of the best 1-2 punches at TE. I'm not sure if they will even be able to trade down with Ebron because he is going be one hot commodity.
-
My draft musings: Teams biggest need is on the offensive side of the ball. With pro-bowlers on the d-line & revamping the LB corp + signing of Graham, defense should not be addressed til the 3rd day. More specifically, offensive playmakers in the passing game are their biggest problem. NFL is a passing league & they just invested a 1 in Manuel. Let's get him some more weapons & see what the kid can do When you draft in the top 10, finding immediate top talent that can blossom into elite talent is the goal. With that in mind,,here some players; -Sammy Watkins: kid is a straight up playmaker who would instantly be our WR1 and move Stevie to slot. 6'1' as well -Mike Evans: huge target @ 6'5" that gives us that immediate red zone threat. ?'s regarding if he is a top 10 pick. He is the epitome of the "go up and get it, open even when covered" WR -Eric Ebron: 6'4" / 250 TE with speed. The new breed of the NFL TE. He immediately starts & moves Chandler into his ideal role of TE2. He splits out a lot & would create mismatches all over the place Watkins is the no-brainer but he probably won't be there. Between EVans & Ebron, I'm leaning Ebron. Reason being is the fact that he will see a ton more snaps then Evans as a rookie IMO. Getting Ebron also lets us move Chandler into TE2 where he much better suited. This team seems to be intent on running the ball so being able to roll out 2 legit TEs on plays will keep team's on their heels whether its a run or pass. Bills also have plenty of young talent @ WR & really dont use 4 or 5 WR sets very often. We all know how good Stevie is & Woods looks like the real deal opposite him. They just drafted 2 slot WR's pretty high in Goodwin & Graham which both have been spoken highly of. This draft is also very deep in WR and OT. You can get a kid like Matthews out of Vandy who has great size & only dominated in the best conference in college (SEC) My dream scenario would be trading down to grab Ebron, picking up an extra 2nd & then grabbing a player like Matthews & your new RT in the 2nd

At this point, I'm favoring Ebron over Evans. Your assessment is spot on about Ebron: He can/should be used like the Saints use Jimmy Graham. He pretty much is a WR and would fill a gaping hole in the Bills lineup. How long has it been since this team has a had a legit TE? I know Chandler led the team in catches (somehow) but he just isn't dependable as a TE1. He'd be a perfect TE2 IMO. If the biggest knock on Ebron is the fact that he isn't the best blocker, then that's fine with me. He's not going to be a 3rd OT. He will be split out abusing LB's with his speed and CB's with his size. Also, getting an elite TE would help this offense out tremendously in the redzone. A TE like Ebron is a QB's best friend in those situations. He can be on the field every single snap and help to keep defenses guessing on whether its a run or pass. I don't know if he is a top 10 pick value wise but he will probably go pretty close to that. It all comes down to what players Whaley think will be there for him in the 2nd round & what position is deeper
