Mike Johnson, New Speaker of the House.

I guess while we're at it, relying on a presumption of fairness, decency and the human spirit (irrespective of theology) isn't such a great plan, either. -

Thanks for the additional clips, but I'm confused as to why you linked it before without understanding the issue it purported addressed? Your commentary before and after the initial link included aggressive commentary (freaks, truth, not giving a sh*T), and the clip you shared (and the text from Twitter) is quite unclear. In the most recent clip shared, Rep Spiller explains his rationale and thinking, and Rep Johnson responds. It's an emotional subject, but as one of the few centrists on the board, I can see elements of both positions that seem logical. -
The War On Women

I watched the clip. I read the text above from @voteAnnJohnson. She indicated she wants to "exempt people for sexual assault exams". I googled HB4 and see that it is a contentious issue, dealing with how law enforcement in Texas is expected to handle individuals once it is revealed they are not legal residents of the United States. I can't seem to find anything specific about what she is talking about. Help me out here. What is she talking about? -

Makes you wonder what other folks were saying 20 years ago, doesn't it? -

I didn't think it was complicated either, but you seemed to be sending mixed signals with the words you used. By the way, I completely agree with you on those you call bible thumpers, but there are a whole cr*p ton of non-thumper people trying to tell people how to live, and trying to pass laws that make something mandatory that violates deeply held beliefs. Meanwhile, here in our little bubble, folks toss around declarations that others are members of "cults" and the like, or tell people to shove their beliefs up their a-word (I will not cross @Irv as he runs a loosely run tight ship). How is that different, do you figure, than the bible thumpers? -

Dear Lord, I know to err is human, but why does John say he accepts all, except Christians, then says he accepts Christians, but immediately thereafter says again "I don't accept Christians..."? He's hard to follow sometimes, and, he used the A word in a family setting. Please forgive him for that. Leh-nerd -

I thought perhaps @John from Riverside was going for the ironic play there, you know, everybody is welcome "except those with Christian values". You're probably right but damn what a play! -

Mass Shooting in Lewiston Maine
leh-nerd skin-erd replied to T&C's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Well, in spite of the rhetoric here the morning after another senseless massacre, maybe it's time to rethink what people think they know. This issue is far more complicated than "NRA!". https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/27/us/gun-owners-liberal-women-minority-reaj/index.html https://theliberalgunclub.com/ https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/who-owns-more-guns-democrats-or-republicans/ar-AA17ibLK It's absolutely stunning that in 2023, a guy identified as being mentally ill, who talked about shooting people, was even allowed out of the hospital/institution he was in. -

“Ok”?! 🤣 @sherpa fields a couple low brow mocks, responds in detail as to what his role is was, making the mockerers the mockerees, and you come up with “ok”? Delightful! 🤣 -
It would be foolish to reach across the aisle to the political enemy for all accept those in districts that waffle between red and blue. The status quo of today’s political debate is that other side is trying to destroy America. Both sides claim you can’t trust the outcome of elections, that illegitimacy abounds, and that most assuredly @#$#s with confidence people have in government. It’s an age-old strategy, it tends to work reasonably well until the mood changes. For now, it just is where we’re at.

I thought both “both side-ism” was anathema to this type of conversation involving politics? You told me so just recently. Next time please don't make me work so hard on this. It is on the GOP, on that we agree. I’m not always convinced that voting in lockstep is indicative of some great democratic tradition, but it’s absolutely true the R party has a whole host of issues.

Off the top of my head, when illegal activity is involved. Fraud. Insider Trading. Money laundering. That sort of thing. I see the political aspects of these investigations, yes. I’m not surprised you do not, Tibsy, I’ve seen you rationalize your support of election deniers and misinformation many times here.

Who can ever really believe anything in DC? You always seem to get turned around here. The political angle is where we are now…like, Trump doesn’t pay taxes…Romney is a closet misogynist…Brett Kavanaugh is a serial sexual abuser…Trump hired hookers from Russia…and so on. Everyone in the game plays the game, and if tying a “loan repayment” to Biden, and tying his family to financial shenanigans with China, Russia and Ukraine results in his dismissal from office, so be it. All I can tell you is that when I lay the cards out as a voter, I see a guy who declared quite forcefully he wasn’t involved in anything involving his sons business or legal issues, and that simply is not true—or as you say, is false and misleading. So, now, the Rs job to connect dots and draw conclusions as they see fit. If he simply loaned his brother money and there’s nothing to see, should be easy enough to explain because surely Biden and his lawyers would have that all documented.

Israel and Iran

A NY Times investigation would be no more or less believable than an investigation completed by Israel, or for that matter the US. The phrase “austere scholar” comes to mind. If the argument is that the State spins things, sure, obviously. Really, what player in the game is beyond reproach? Meanwhile, the two sides play who can wipe whom off the face of the earth first? -
I addressed the possibility that it could be a call from a Trump supporter, keep up Fergie. I think I made the point I wanted to make, pointing out that Johnny rushed to defend Palestinians from stereotypes and painting with a broad brush while doing exactly that sort of thing a few hours later. I believe the point is clear, and that is for every knock at the worst tendencies of extreme MAGA voters, people like John (and you) are mirror images.

I think everyone who is paying attention should be concerned about COVID, pandemic management, who was allowed to gather and spread the virus and who wasn’t, the fallout from the compulsory vaccination and the politicization of the virus. Very little reflects anything approximating the finest hours of our nation. That said, the lingering aftermath of COVID is real (another reason everything top to bottom should be reviewed) and the impact on industry very apparent. This story represents friends and neighbors losing their jobs, something WNY knows far too much about. Sad news.
