  1. Another good possibility, though he's been out of the coaching biz longer than Schottenheimer so I have to wonder if he would have any interest. I'd sooner see him than Billick, though.
  2. It's more important to have a great QB than a great O-line, but that isn't the only consideration when it comes to drafting. The fact that you need a QB doesn't mean that one worthy of a high pick is available in the draft. If the Bills think that there is a franchise QB there for the taking, then great; but my one hope for the draft is that they don't delude themselves into thinking a guy is worthy of the #9 pick just because he's the top guy left at a position of need.
  3. Please, post your list of former NFL head coaches that the Bills should bring in. Mine has Cowher (who's had discussions with the Bills), Billick (who I'm ambivalent at best about), and Schottenheimer (who has said repeatedly that he doesn't want to come back to coaching). Beyond that I find it hard to believe that anyone could get excited about the proven track records of failure that are out there. Everyone tosses around this idea of bringing in an experienced coach, but that shouldn't overshadow, y'know, being good at it.
  4. Some of you guys really need to step back from the ledge and realize that the pool of experienced HC candidates is pretty damn small - at least the ones who are any good. The only one who would really come in and provide instant league-wide credibility is Cowher. Billick at least has been there and should avoid rookie mistakes. But outside of them, who do you want the Bills to go after? Haslett, Fassell, Green, Martz, Tice, Edwards, Mora? Do any of those names really sound better than a coordinator who if nothing else, hasn't proven to be a bonehead?
  5. No, but then again how many successful coaches have the Bills ever had? But if you look around the league, there aren't that many guys on their second or third team enjoying success. I think 9/12 coaches in the playoffs this year got their start as head coaches with their current teams - I don't know if that's typical, but it seems to indicate that a lack of previous experience isn't an impossible obstacle to overcome.
  6. I understand where you're coming from, but the pool of proven head coaches is extremely small. It's pretty much Cowher and Billick, depending on how you view Billick's last few years in Baltimore (I would not be wild about that hire, but it would have some logic to it). After that it seems to me you're talking about guys who enjoyed marginal and fleeting success their first go-round, and I find it hard to get excited about that as opposed to giving a new guy a shot.
  7. Good post. I'd rather see the Bills hire even a completely unknown coordinator, let alone a highly-regarded guy like Frazier, rather than waste three years with a Fassell/Haslett caliber retread.
  8. I really don't get this. I know others have covered this ground earlier in the thread, but seriously? If the Bills hire one of the top coordinator HC candidates that's it for you? Not even willing to entertain the possibility that he might turn out to be a good head coach?
  9. Gotta get to the playoffs before you can win, and I count 14 playoff appearances in 21 seasons of coaching. For a Bills fan to knock Schottenheimer's coaching record after the last 10 years is beyond absurd.
  10. A better question is, can Buddy Nix find the next Joshua Cribbs? Any idiot can look at Cleveland's games this year and say "Hey, this Cribbs kid is pretty good!"
  11. Trade for Cribbs? Not a bad idea. Trade Parrish for Cribbs? If you could find anyone foolish enough to make that deal, a great idea.
  12. After this past season I don't think anyone should be looking for a raise. Jackson had a great season, but he did just get a new contract, and not a bad one at all. Byrd was a rookie, you don't get a huge raise after your rookie season. Williams had a really good year, he might be the only one in contradiction to my first statement. Although hasn't he had his rookie deal extended/renegotiated already? Everyone else? No. At best they played up to their contracts, and even that's not true for the majority.
  13. That's one heck of a season, good job, Mr. Jackson! Here's to many more!
  14. Oh, and congratulations to George Wilson! It can't be easy to make a switch from one position to another like that, and he's improved every year.
  15. Yeah, the money's the big question. If he's slated to make much it wouldn't surprise me to see him gone. If he's not getting a huge amount though, I don't see the harm in keeping him around.
  16. Talk about opening a huge can of worms... are we going to see the NFL front office micromanaging teams' rosters to determine who plays and who sits? I can't blame fans for being unhappy that Manning and co. got pulled out of a game with a perfect record on the line, but I don't see a workable alternative. Is the league going to decide when a player is healthy enough to play and start fining teams that don't play guys?
  17. Seeing as the 3-4 seems to be back in vogue, the wiser course seems to me to go against the grain, stick with some form of 4-3, but hopefully get some more size in the linebacking corps. If we join the trendy crowd chasing after guys to fit a 3-4 I don't see anything but trouble.
  18. Fair enough.
  19. But the same argument could be used to shoot down the credentials of any candidate short of Ron Wolf or Floyd Reese. Just the fact that Nix has been a key player in a successful organization like the Chargers is a major plus for him. The kind of proof you seem to be demanding just isn't going to be there for about any possible hire you could name.
  20. "Travesty" is pretty strong. Comparing the stats for Schaub, Brady, and Roethlisberger they seem just about the same, and really they all had Pro Bowl worthy seasons. So I'm not really feeling the outrage that Brady got in...
  21. Those names sound made up, like Reggie Corner.
  22. Plus in this case we're talking about timeouts on defense, so that's 100% on the head coach. What is amazing is the terrible clock management you see as you look around the league. Heck, today, Jeff Fisher, who I consider one of the top coaches currently in the game, wasted a golden opportunity to get a chance to win in regulation by not using his timeouts when Miami was backed up in their own end zone. So as aggravating as the (non)use of timeouts was today, sadly I'm skeptical that it will be greatly improved with a new guy in charge.
  23. For what it's worth, I meant that comment to be a shot at Incognito and not you.
  24. With the exception of the jump pass TD against Jacksonville, Hardy looked absolutely, completely lost on the field last year. With some guys you get the sense that more game experience will help them put it all together, but Hardy did not look like he had a grasp on the basics. Putting him out there in that condition wouldn't be of any benefit to him or the team.
  25. I thought he was saying Incognito was gonna go grab Taylor and start using him to club Pats* players. Which, y'know, I'd be ok with.
