Ya know what was crazy? And this is prolly totally OT..but 1)It was during the war, and Wilson was so focused on winning the war so he could craft the peace that he never said one word about the epidemic..not one single stinking word. He thought it could distract the American people from focusing on the war effort. There was ZERO federal responce to the epidemic. 2) What information did come out, came form the CPI Committee for Public Information. Pretty messed up this was allowed in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Public_Information This is why I think, it essential to have a battling press. -

Hmm, which brings us naturally to a discussion of this book https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/155516/jitterbug-perfume-by-tom-robbins/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jitterbug_Perfume I am a huge Tom Robbins fan, and this is by far my favorite by him. -

How that correlates to the discussion on opening the economy? Is there an infernce in the study that "deaths of despair" will increase? Is there a percentage attached? Just not sure i understand, and i would like to.Thx -

But what does that mean? how do we do it? Not saying that sarcastically, but that is the discussion we need to have -

This is the issue about having a discussion...it is painted like this on the one side as though "sitting on the couch" has no economic impacts, and that economic impacts are just gunna be minimal. Do you deny there are impacts that are occurring to harm people because of the stay at home orders? -

there are the studies that say antibodies show way more infection, studies that show outside of NYC death rates are disproportionately in the elderly with comorbidity factors, and the hospitliztion rates and ICU rates. All these things should be used. I think we can see how Sweden goes as a quicker model. Must admit I have not seen any recent data from there, need to look. And again, i think the "discussion " that needs to be had, and it sounds like an abhorrent discussion, is what level of an increase in Covid deaths is "acceptable" vs the impacts of keeping everything closed. -

But that is the discussion that needs to happen...you say huge uptick..that may be correct, may not be. And if the fear is that people in the "open economy" will be in contact with the elderly, how can we mitigate that risk, knowing it will never be 100%. I think the big thing is we have to comfortable with having the conversation that this is "an act of god" and that deaths among the elderly and with comorbidity factors are gunna rise, and what level point do we morally say it is the correct thing to do(open). I mean, we have gone to wars for 250 years to preserve our way of life and understand there is going hundreds of thousands of lives lost , almost all of them young people at the start of their lives. And if you think a great depression is not gunna sow social unrest at levels we have never seen and threaten out way of life, look at the those folks i Michigan the other day. Just wait till people cant pay for medicines and feed their family in December. -

No, its just the "facts"( and his supporters) he is using don't agree with the "facts" that anti Trump folks( of which i am one) are using, and hence , goest o the heart of the argument in this thread..Title of which is " needs to be a discussion" ... But when only the "science" that supports your view is used, and all sides to the argument are not considered, and their is an election coming up, discussion and debate is none existant. You either want to save lives, or you are a greedy SOB who only cares about net worth. We as a country need to have the discussion about the impacts of keeping the economy closed is going to have long term. Expected deaths with a crashed economy, how long till we pay of the debt, what impacts on social programs the debt will impact etc. That includes best guesses based on available data on which populations will suffer the most in terms of expected morbidity, expected life expetency in those affected populations etc on opening up. And then a cost benefit analysis needs to occur...sound awful I know, but it is the reality. -

I get the philosophical debate one can have about the diametrically opposed positions..I am a living breathing example of it..I am pro-life yet very anti capital punishment. Having said that, now is not the time to let politics and being right, or more important it seems, proving the other guy wrong, drive our policy decsions..Unfortunately that is driving the discussion on both sides i believe, and prevents meaningful conversations and debate..I know, always that way, but in this mess would hope it would change. Does not help we are in an election year. -

Very tragic indeed, and some very hard discussions need to be had about the greater good with regards to lockdowns and opening up the economy. Unfortunately, we live in a time where any discussion of opening and ackowledging , that yes , that will mean additional deaths paints one as death monger only worried about net worth. And yes it sounds crass, but for the most part we are talking about cratering the economy to extend the life by a month or year of people already at an end of life cycle. -

I would! One of the most fun games I ever attended was the Bills-Giants strike game. Me and about 8,000 of my closest friends. At Weichecs in Kaisertown till about 3:30 watching early game, in our seats about 4.10, sit where ever you wanted..we actually had a blast! -

Can we please just end this charade that we are " social distancing" . I have a place in DC, and outside of Sunday @Hammered a Lot then New Era, there is no place in the world i would rather spend time. Its the place i had to change my party affiliation from Republican to Democrat from 88-2003 cause the defacto election was the democratic primary. It may be the most liberal city in the US. Can we please stop trying to middle this thing? -

BTW, just a heads up. Went to Costco late this afternoon, zero beef, chicken, or pork , and I do mean zero. And it look like it ain’t coming back soon. Central coolers where chicken and pork normally displayed has fruits and greens. Normal area where those shelved was blocked. Publix has plenty of everything, but just a heads up if you planning to stock up on any of those items in the next few days. Of course , maybe different in you neck of the woods. -

agree, people will either chose to go to a restaurant or not, but i will not be wearing a mask at one. I will wear in the grocery or hardware store just to make other people feel comfortable. -

Strangely, I don't have a problem with the masks. If it gets things opened up quicker, I all for it. Not sure of their efficacy, but dont care. Now, not sure how it gunna work at the bar i plant my fat arse at for 12 hours next week when we open outside bars in VA... -
Hers is the problem with China and how we move forward as I see it. Again, very anecdotal, but sure it is more prevelant than we think. We are a consumer driven economy. China has 1.4BILLION consumers , we have 1/5th of that. So many consumer brands have startegic plans that include a big hunk of growth projections based on selling to those 1.4B. For instance , heard CEO of Starbucks other day...their plan is to open 1 new store in China every twelve hours for the next 10 YEARS!!!!! How do you replace that growth if we enter into a new cold war?

It’s funny , the Friday before the poop really hit the fan, we had had several folks over for dinner , one who happens to be an ER doc. As a joke , he brought us over 2 N95 masks , I have Been wearing the one since late March when I go into stores. I am NOT wearing it outside, golfing, or anywhere else. -

And Patton Oswalt is an entitled rich dude who still has his health insurance, not worried about buying meds for his sick kids, not worried about his company going permanently out of business and the economy being in depression..and oh boy what a great environment for a mid 50's dude to find a new job...and MOST IMPORTANTLY...perfectly happy to see food delivery folks, truck drivers, people who work in food processing plants..all of them there low lives need to go out and work so that he can pontificate from his home about why is EVERYBODY not staying home. In his world, the people who count are staying home, the people working now are replaceable. -

I know, just being facetious...i think she make sense across the board..think it just confirms what we all thought. But *****, cant the NFL pay for a study that says the virus cant get through the fence at New Era
