I haven't felt this way since I stopped supporting this team when Bruce was released. Except I didn't stop supporting this team when Bruce et al. were released. Those were sad days, but my feelings then were more about my memories of the 90s than the realities of the 00s. The team needed to move on then and as painful as it seems today, it needs to move on from Fred now.

As a bit of a Walt defender (my first Bills autograph), I'm ok with this approach and the list. As has been said, the pick itself wasn't entirely wasted like Flowers and Maybin, as it turned into Joe Devlin, who served admirably for years. Also, Walt had a better Bills career than the three above him on your list, although he may not have lived up to #1 overall - but again, he got us a second after four years and might have done something in St. L but for the knee. Another tidbit I've mentioned before, the number two overall behind Walt was Sherm White, taken by the Bengals, later traded to Buff and who gave us several more years of adequate play. And the Dolphins first round pick that year, Walt's d-line teammate Mike Kadish, also ended up in Buffalo where he was a regular for years. Weird draft. And, although there were a few great players taken after Walt in 1972, the only HOFer was Franco, a position we would never have picked in 1972. And, as someone noted, we would still have picked Jim in 1983 irrespective of Tom. This is the old Ralph is cheap thing where he used his second first on the QB position to save money. If we only had one pick, it would have been a QB.

I don't disagree with this, but since it appears that this Harvin deal will be for one year, that suggests that unlike Snyder, who liked to collect toys, the Bills are engaged in a thought-out plan of attack: don't risk a long-term investment with a guy like Harvin, but don't ignore what he can bring to the table should he be engaged.

I don't think anyone can compare Pegs to Danny Boy, and certainly not at this point, unless you are suggesting that Pegs is letting the FO do it's job, as Snyder did his first year in Washington. And Danny was rewarded that first year as the Redskins won the division and a playoff game with Brad Johnson at QB (did someone say journeyman), a strong running game, and formidable defense. It wasn't until the following year that Danny buys Bruce for too much money, fires Norv with a winning record, and otherwise screws up the team.

agreed, and although Scott Chandler had his shortcomings, I do think he deserves more credit than he sometimes gets. I mean, he's not Chandler Scott for goodness sakes.

Maybe, but there is an element of machismo about Miami's actions that jives with a good business sense, unless they really intend to use both Cameron and Clay. But that's a lot of coin to invest in the TE position for a team that just took on the Suh contract and has to worry about next year's QB contract.

I like the Alex Smith as the current median example, but I actually think is he "just barely" ok. So, I would consider career "ok" QBs to be slightly better than Alex Smith, but not quite Matt Hasselbeck, who was actually a pretty good QB, but doesn't get as much credit. Brad Johnson is a solid choice here and may be the best choice. I think Phil Simms would have a better reputation if we didn't have to hear him bloviate every year, but if you consider him ok, I would like our chances this year with a Phil Simms at QB..

If I was high up in the front office, maybe even at the highest level, I might consider adopting a name befitting my status, maybe a regal name, and drop in on a popular team message board from time to time, dropping clues to possible front office moves to gage the water so to speak. What about Rex, hmmm, people seem pleased. EJ - rather quiet, depends what we bring in. Fred - whoa, better back off on that one. Of course, in the real world, I wouldn't do any such thing. But it's fun to speculate.

Most Americans have trouble with metaphor as you've just discovered. Usually you are better off with simile, but in this case, even that would have blown up in your face. But I appreciate the gist of what you are saying and agree that Fred is special in a Kyle Williams sort of way....

Most posters on here are pretty fanatical, so I wouldn't be surprised that none or very few left. And although many folks left at halftime, and some of those returned, the stadium was still more than half full in the second half. So that's at least 40k. Certainly the scores of posters on here that say they attended is a very small subset of 40k. I had an 8pm flight back to DC and my family home is an hour in the opposite direction from the airport, so even if I wanted to leave, I had no incentive to do so. But my group very clearly determined at halftime to see it through to the bitter end out of respect for all the joy (and heartache) the team had provided us up to that point. Yes, we didn't win a Super Bowl, but that game and 51-3 are two sporting moments I'll never forget.

I gave away my ST seats in the upper deck for that game... as I decided to sit with my brother and high school friends in the end zone. One of the better decisions I've made.

I rarely post on the board, as I've found that by the time I see something I want to respond to, someone has already made the point. Often it is you Kelly. When I saw the thread title, the first name that popped in my head is Harvin. The Jets have a lot of needs, but brought Harvin in to basically play the CJ role, or at least that is what the powers that be at the time promised him. So, to immediately assume the Jets would make a big money offer for CJ is to assume a lot. But, these are the Jets of course, so we can't rule it out.
