My advice to NYC visitors is not to have a preset schedule and walk to your destination. Chances are you'll find something cool on the journey that you'll remember more than the destination. If you're staying downtown, take some time to walk across Brooklyn Bridge. See if there's a cool act that you may like at the City Winery. But most of all, just walk around.

I wouldn't classify anything west of Missisippi as midwest. I'd say, anything west of Rochester, south of Canada, north of Kentucky/WV to the River. Maybe include eastern parts of IA, MO & MN.

Using the standard of owning media & news, China is certainly front and center. Not going to argue about Saudi's impeccable human rights record. But you have cause & effect reversed. Saudis are benefiting from the USA's largesse because it's in USA's interests are more aligned with the kingdom at the moment. Saudis don't dictate US foreign policy. If the USA's position changes, then Saudis are left twisting in the wind, no matter how much cash the princes throw around.

They had a valid reason to worry about naked short sellers at the time, along with mark to market accounting and access to the discount window. Of course you run away from the question of what you want the financial sector to do in a vibrant and growing economy.

The regulators and GSEs never took full responsibility for their roles in the run up. If any private sector company committed a fraction of the financial fraud that was uncovered at Freddie & Fannie, people would be in jail. The regulators turned a blind eye to the malfeasance in the mortgage markets because the biggest abuses were at the local & state levels and that's what was padding the state budgets. It's too easy to blame the big originating banks and the rating agencies, because there's about a dozen of companies that you can point a finger to, instead of corralling the thousands of other players who had a bigger role.
