Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not impressed with Barkley beating up on a Big East team like Syracuse. What happened with Barkley against Stanford? Matt Barkley had 0 TDs and USC scored 14 points vs Stanford. Matt Scott had 3 TDs and Arizona scored 48 points vs Stanford. I think Matt Barkley is liked by everybody but NFL teams. IMO, the guy has bust written all over him. -
Manuel was my favorite QB at the start of the draft season and now it''s between him and Matt Scott. Geno Smith was always a pipe dream and I'm almost glad he'll be gone because I get a downer vibe from him for some reason. To me, EJ Manuel checks all of the boxes except for questions on hard core competitiveness and consistency. Matt Scott checks all of the boxes except for ideal size and his rawness due too lack of starts. I would love for Manuel to be drafted by the Bills, but I do have this gut feeling that Scott will be the best QB in this class due to him being the most competitive combined with his strong release and amazing athletic skills. I just hope it's one of the two.

IMHO - San Fran will move up in the draft

I think the draft experts are missing the boat with Matt Scott. In this case, they are still stuck in the old ways of draft think while NFL teams are thinking about the future of the league, where it's heading and the future of the QB position in particular. I'd actually be shocked if the Jaguars passes on Scott with their second pick. -
"I am sure they would be capable of adjusting the system to fit a particular strength or hide a weakness of a QB, but looking for a system fit to what they have run, athleticism would be on the last rung of the list of priorities." The guy who wrote that couldn't be more wrong. Marrone ran what he ran because he had Ryan Nassib as his QB. Make no mistake, Doug Marrone will try to replicate New Orleans Saints offense. Last I knew, Drew Brees has a fast set of wheels on him and so will the QB that the Buffalo Bills select in round one or two. I think that fans here will be surprised at how how the NFL teams rank these QBs. I see them coming off the board...Smith, Manuel then Scott in the late first early second before both Barkley and Nassib. The NFL is changing and the traditional QBs are on the way out. The NFL no longer wants to deal with slow footed pocket QBs like Barkley, Nassib, Wilson, Landry, Bray and Glennon. There were a ton of NFL personnel at Arizona's pro day, while it looked like Nassib was all by himself in an empty room at his pro day in Syracuse. Pocket passers are dinosaurs. Yes I know, Joe Flacco won just this past year. I still think it's the last gasps of an old style that's on it's way out. Just look at the top QBs in next year's class...J. Football, Bridgewater, Boyd. Change is on it's way and it's coming faster than you think. The Bills will draft either Smith, Manuel or Scott as their QB of the future, just wait and see.

The Niners are one of the teams I see looking at Matt Scott. Different size body, but the kid is very similar in style to Kaepernick. My worst nightmare is the Bills missing out on Manuel in the first (wherever they end up picking in that round) and the Niners selecting Scott at #34 ahead of the Bills #41 spot. One weird scenario would be if the Redskins somehow picked Scott in the second round to be a much better backup fit in their offense than Cousins, and they look to trade Cousins for a pick or two in this draft. These read option/running QB teams really need a great backup that fits their unique offense. One injury to Kaepernick, RGIII or Wilson and their seasons are really screwed up. -
LOL...I think we as fans might have unrealistic expectations at just how much "poker" the Bills are willing to play with the QB position and this draft. While it will really hurt badly not getting a Jordan, Ansah or Patterson, I have been a big fan of Manuel this whole draft season. It will suck drafting him that high, but that's the price you pay for ignoring this position and not drafting Kaepernick or Wilson these last two years. If Geno's gone and they go BPA at #8 then they're a team on the high wire without a net. If they "go there" and Manuel is gone before they pick again then I'm hoping and praying for Matt Scott at #41.
-
I just don't think the Bills are interested in Barkley at all. The guy is slower than Nassib and just as unathletic. Marrone comes from the Saints where they had Drew Brees. I expect them to draft one of those type of players... Smith or Manuel at #8 or Scott at #41 Don't yell at me, but I could definitely see a scenario where Smith is gone and the Bills aren't able to trade back in the 1st (in the hopes of targeting Manuel) in the range of #18-24. Just giving fair warning that Manuel could be drafted at #8. It will be a tough pill to swallow, but they are a very QB desperate team and can't just sit and hope no one picks Manuel before #41. What the Seahawks and Redskins did last year could have an effect on what the Bills do. They could be spooked enough not to fool around and pick the QB they want at #8 even if he's rated 20 spots lower.

Enter Geno Smith, EJ Manuel or Matt Scott. -
The big drawback has been that he's only had one season starting. But that could also be looked at by just thinking about the kind of upside the kid has. He was really good without having a lot of experience. He beat USC and almost beat Stanford putting up a lot of points in the process. Yes he's raw, but you aren't drafting on who can start right away, you are drafting what they can and should be in two years and into the future. IMO he's already better than Barkley and Nassib who both are what they are at this point having had a ton of college starts. Scott on the other hand is still learning, yet he possesses the physical tools and ceiling to become a Russell Wilson or a Drew Brees.

Seeing how you've turned to insulting me it's obvious I won the argument. The funny thing is that you chose to infer that I was both ignorant and biased. I gave you a real example of Matt Scott's heart and leadership. Providing you with some actual knowledge on the subject matter. Beyond that, it's apparently fine with you that Nassib fans can proclaim he has heart and leadership all day long without providing a real example of heart and leadership. Yet I'm the ignorant one? How does that work? Do you know the definition of ignorant? Also, how am I biased? I have no allegiance to Arizona football. It's so rich that you would infer someone was biased in a 44 page Ryan Nassib thread, a guy who happen to play QB for Buffalo's biggest local college football program. -

One of the reasons I repeat the fact that Matt Scott was almost knocked out, threw up, and led his team to a comeback win putting up almost 50 points against USC, is to mock the Ryan Nassib supporters who keep saying he's the best leader and has the biggest heart of this QB class. There's no evidence of Nassib having a big heart and being a great leader. Not only does Nassib not have a story like that, he lost the USC game. Guys like Nassib and Barkley will not get much better than they are now. They have been long time starters in college and have a very low ceiling with regards to their potential will be in the NFL. A guy like Matt Scott is just scratching the surface on his talent. Dude has a ton of upside given what he did in his first and only season as a starter. -

Awww, poor Ryan. At least we know he had a few reasons for why he pooped his pants against the nations top senior college players. Maybe they should have gave him a hot cup of cocoa to make him more comfy. Yeah, who wants EJ Manuel anyways. The guy who couldn't give a crap about being taken out of his element and comfort zone to score three TDs to become the player of the game. We want Marrone's good little boy scout to run our franchise. Who knows, maybe Marrone can buy him some nice warm mittens with some good grip to throw with, since he did play in a dome in Syracuse and now he'll unfortunately have to play outside in the cold and chilly weather. That's taking him out of his element and comfort zone, but who cares since he has excuses at the ready for why he can't hack it in Buffalo. We must protect Ryan Nassib from feeling any discomfort. -

I was replying to a guy who was comparing Nassib to all three...Brady, Marino and Wilson. What's embarrassing is that apparently you and others here seem to think Ryan Nassib possesses these qualities. At least Scott does show these qualities on video. The ball rockets out of Matt Scott's arm in comparison of Nassib's rather ordinary release and ball speed. It's like Nassib's video is in slow speed vs Scott's game against USC. Also, did you happen to check out the scoreboard? Scott was concussed, he threw up and he still had the heart to tough it out with a come from behind win. There's no doubt in my mind that Scott will be picked ahead of Nassib. Scott will be picked in the second round and Nassib will fall to the fourth. That's the difference between a true prospect and a quality backup/flyer QB like Nassib. I swear, people have some serious western new york blinders on with this Nassib kid. Basically, he's a slower version of Colt McCoy. We all know how he turned out. -

I challenge you to go and watch "Ryan Nassib vs USC" and "Matt Scott vs USC" back to back on youtube. Only one of them shows Brady's composure, heart and leadership. Only one of them shows Marino's rapid fire release. Only one of them shows Wilson's quick feet and athleticism. -
Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Dude ran a 5.09 in the 40 yard dash. He was slower than 12 offensive lineman at the combine. He was slower than all of the defensive players save for a couple of DTs. That is what I'd call a nonstarter. Nassib is simply not fast enough nor athletic enough for the NFL starter QB position. Especially in combination with his short and stocky build and that below average NFL arm. BTW, he throws a horrible deep ball. He looks good in college because it's college and the big east conference he's playing against. He projects as a backup only QB in the NFL. There's no way the Bills draft this guy. If they do, I'll officially be off the Doug Marrone band wagon seeing how he would be a complete idiot hitching his first head coaching gig wagon to Ryan Nassib. The dude you should start looking at is Matt Scott. He has everything but a long resume. Dude got almost knocked out in the USC game, had a concussion, he threw up because of it and STILL brought his team back to win against USC putting up almost 50 points in the process. Where's a Ryan Nassib story like that? -
Preliminary Mock - Any Changes Needed?
1billsfan replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Patterson is going to put the fear of God in NFL defenses. His open field moves are beyond sick. He's either going to the Bills at #8 or the Jets at #9. The Jets may even leapfrog them. Stevie Johnson would be a perfect mentor and if we get either Manuel or Scott with our second pick and one of them become a Kaepernick or Wilson "homerun" story...our offense would be one of the best in the league. Remember what happen to this franchise the last time you could say that in the early 90s? 2014 would then be the time for signing defensive FAs for the run at the Superbowl. -
The Bills have a few holes to fill
1billsfan replied to chef4131's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Cordarelle Patterson will either be a Bill or a Jet. The guy is going to put the fear of God into NFL defenses. He may not even make it to the Bills. Detroit is bringing him in for a look. The NFL is becoming a pinball game. Guys that can take it to the house like Patterson are gold. The NFL is ruling out almost all contact from defensive players (exaggeration, but you know what I mean). If the Bills draft Patterson and somehow find their franchise QB, they will be instant Superbowl contenders. -
Not knocking him, just showing the "swing for the fence" QB picks. As a Bills fan however, I don't see ever fearing Tannehill. He strikes me as average, which is a "fail" in my book. If Geno Smith is another Tannehill or Dalton then I'd pass. But since we don't know I'd probably have to take him. This is all speculation that Smith would be there and there's a VERY slim chance of that happening with each passing day. I think Bills fans should focus on the BPA at #8 and second tier/pick QBs, and forget this Geno Smith talk. It's kind of pointless at this point now, right? Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson beg to differ with this opinion.
-
Recent history: "Swing for the fence" non-slam dunk picks (meaning Newton, Luck and RGIII) on QB in 1st rd: 2011 Tennessee - Locker 2011 Jacksonville - Gabbert 2011 Minnesota - Ponder 2012 Miami - Tannehill Second tier rd 2 and 3 QB picks: 2011 Cincinatti - Dalton 2011 San Francisco - Kaepernick 2011 New England - Mallett 2012 Denver - Osweiler 2012 Seattle - Wilson 2012 Philadelphia - Foles The Bills would do well to stay calm at #8 (do not give picks for the non-slam dunk Geno Smith), and go BPA there...then pick either Manuel or Scott with their second round pick. I'm assuming that Geno Smith will be gone by #8. If Geno's there then I wouldn't mind if the Bills picked him. Just don't give up any picks because the risk of losing out on great players with that move isn't worth it. It's a double penalty if Smith is a bust. This is what the Niners did in 2011 when Alex Smith was STILL known as a bust...they ignored the Lockers, Gabberts and Ponders and drafted Aldon Smith in the first, then Kaepernick in the second.
-
Brees is fast, agile and has a great arm. Barkley and Nassib have none of those things. You can be lacking in one or two prototypical franchise QB attributes. But you can't haver the combination that Barkley and Nassib have and expect anything more than a backup QB.
-
Barkley and Nassib are not starter material at the next level. Simply put...they are too short, stocky, and slow with average NFL arms. There's no way that either of these guys are the QB the Bills are targeting. Doug Marrone coached on the Saints who had Drew Brees as their QB. He knows what basic physical skills a QB must have to be a viable successful NFL starter.
-
I did say that I would be excited if they drafted Geno Smith because he does possess elite NFL QB skills. I just like Manuel and Scott (the only other two I see as potential elite QBs) better because of their personalities for the job of franchise QB. I fear Geno's personality isn't one of being a leader. I don't think there's anything wrong to have an opinion like that. It's just an opinion. If Geno falls to the Bills I would have a hard time passing on him considering what he did his senior year. I probably would end up picking him. We're all hoping and praying the Bills finally find the franchise QB in this draft. I will be very happy if we get Geno Smith at #8. I will still have a worry about his being able to handle the leadership/pressure side of the job but that's it. That's a valid concern, right? So in conclusion, I will be very happy if the Bills get Smith, Manuel or Scott. BTW, all this Smith talk is pointless since he probably won't be there. I'm hearing an awful lot of Geno Smith talk on Philly radio today. Would he get past Jacksonville? The Raiders? The Cardinals? If he gets to the Bills it would be a small miracle.
-
I never said Geno wasn't smart. Just that I think he doesn't have the personality for the job. I think Geno is a great kid, but that "leadership" gene is missing from him from the vibe I get. Hey, if they draft him I'll be excited because he does have everything else. I'll just hope I was wrong on his leadership abilities. As for Scott, I told you the "come from behind with a concussion" story of the USC game. Does Geno have one? Not that you have to have one, just that he doesn't as far as I know. Plus, I like Scott's personality more than Smith's. It may sound silly, but i think your personality matters when you're the leader of a team and a franchise. I could be totally wrong, and if they pick Smith I hope that I simply just got a bad impression.
