Ryan Nassib - QB - Syracuse
1billsfan replied to BuffaloBillsForever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
IMO, this is all smokescreen stuff. There's no way the Bills draft Nassib at #8 especially over real QB prospects like Geno Smith or EJ Manuel. If they were to actually do this, it will be the worst draft pick in the history of the franchise. Not only that, but Doug Marrone would officially become Doug Moron in my book. I simply can not fathom Marrone thinking Nassib is franchise QB material. So I have to think that this Marrone/Nassib marriage talk is a smokescreen and they will draft a real franchise QB prospect instead, one who could actually win a Superbowl one day, within the first two rounds. I will feel so embarrassed and sad for the Bills if they pick Nassib at #8. -
I'd love the Warmack pick if it was a choice between those two QBs busts in waiting and a dominating all pro guard.
-
IMO at #8, the Bills will be picking the freakishly talented player from the SEC which almost perfectly hits position of need, draft value and cap allocation with regards to position...Cordarelle Patterson.

A lot of that may have a lot to do with Nassib's overly built up arms. He may not have that elasticity to make the deeper touch throws. Jim Harbaugh mentioned that Kaepernick needs to stay away from the weights a lot more. -
Any team taking a QB not named Geno Smith in the top 15 picks is going to be laughed and mocked at by almost everyone in the NFL world. This QB class is highly suspect. The Jets have no intention of taking a QB this year. They're waiting till 2014 when they have a newly hired head coach and they will choose his QB after looking for and getting a horrible 2013 season just like the Colts did a couple years ago.

I couldn't agree more. I'm really hoping for either Smith, Manuel or Scott and to have that QB sit for a year and be ready in 2014 to get the Bills back on top of the AFC where they belong. -

I keep hearing this "most NFL ready" QB and wonder why Bills fans want the "most NFL ready" QB. With the starting QB position it's about picking the QB who has the potential and high ceiling to be a superstar franchise QB that can win you a Superbowl or two or three. Unless you're picking Luck or RGIII, it's more about what they will become in two years. -

NFL defenses will challenge Nassib to beat them deep. They will sit on the short stuff and make life difficult for Spiller with more men in the box. If Nassib was mobile and agile then I could see a path to being successful franchise QB. If he had a big arm that would challenge defenses then I could see a path to being successful franchise QB. I just don't see it. -

When you're a slow, unathletic, average armed QB, I think it's fairly easy to predict whether or not that translates to the NFL. I can't think of one successful franchise QB in the last 15 years who didn't excel in at least one of those areas. -
Remember the 3rd Round Last Year. This is why...

Current Ryan Nassib rankings… GBN Report - 44 Mike Mayock - 50 Gil Brandt - 50 CBS Sports - 48 Yet it's logical for the Bills to spend the #8 overall pick on Ryan Nassib? That is the logical thing to do unlike the Bills reaching for TJ Graham last year? What if Marrone doesn't even want Nassib and would rather develop a QB with a higher ceiling and with modern NFL era QB skills like Matt Scott instead? I don't think that Nassib fans are even remotely considering this possibility. Marrone may not even want Nassib. He's almost 50 years old and he won't hitch his head coaching career wagon to Nassib if thinks there's a good chance he's not a franchise QB. -
Ryan Nassib looked slow and unathletic even at the Senior Bowl. He'll be over drafted by someone (hopefully it's not the Bills) and will therefore be a bust. He's a QB from a soon to be bygone NFL era which is not coming back anytime soon. He's the one I also think will be the biggest bust of this year's draft. IMO his highest ceiling is Andy Dalton, which in my book isn't nearly good enough with the great QBs in this league like Rogers, Luck, RGIII, Wilson, Kaepernick, Brees and that's not even counting Manning and Brady who could be around another three years. It's also not counting the great QBs in next year's class.

I think fans here who believe that the Bills want either Nassib or Barkley are mistaken. The NFL is drastically moving towards mobile, athletic QBs. Nassib and Barkley are both great guys, smart guys and their skills were fine at the college level. But their games just do not translate to the next level. At least, not at the successful franchise QB or even long term starter level. I think the Bills want either Smith, Manuel or Scott. They are closest to the Wilson, RGIII, Kaepernick style of play that will dominate the league going forward.

That's almost impossible considering Marrone has coached Nassib for four years. He should know with about 90% certainty whether Nassib is a franchise QB like Drew Brees or if he's not. Marroane coached with the Saints, he knows what level he's looking for in his QB. If Marrone has only a 50-50 read on whether Nassib is a franchise QB he's the biggest idiot employed in the NFL. If the Bills pass on Nassib at #8 (which I hope they do since I think he's a clip board holder at the NFL level), then the Bills don't think Nassib is a franchise QB at all and they'll target another QB in this draft. The guy I think has Drew Brees potential is Matt Scott, to me Nassib is quickly beomming this year's Blaine Gabbert. Someone is going to waaaay over draft him. -
Draft plan Bills may be looking to pull off.

This is the most thoughtful post I've read on here in a while. The Bills really should have their heads examined if they pick any QB not named Geno Smith at #8. Imagine having to pick the "star franchise" QB out of a group of three 2nd round graded QB prospects in Barkley, Nassib, or Manuel? Really? With QBs like Glennon, Bray, Wilson and Scott all having very good chances to outperform your brilliant roll of the dice reach of a QB. Of which you could get in the third and second rounds. I don't care how good they'll be right away, it's about who will be the best in two or three years. The guy I think will be the best down the line is Matt Scott. I will be shocked if the Bills select any QB other than Geno Smith at #8. If he's not there the Bills should absolutely pick the stud player that is truly worthy of such a high price tag. The Bills earned that #8 pick, you don't throw it down the toilet at slow, unathletic average armed QBs prospect just because they're "gym rats". -
I think that might have been a little smokescreen talk. I really feel that Cordarelle Patterson is Nix's guy. The only thing that doesn't make it a lock it down prediction is his possible character concerns and his one year to judge him on which Nix says he doesn't like. Other than that, he's a guy with true difference maker ability like Spiller has who was the Bills first round pick in 2010. He is a perfect fit for a huge need. This team needs an impact player on the outside. Johnson and Spiller aren't getting any younger. The Patriots are starting to look very vulnerable this year. If Kolb plays well and they hit on Patterson, the Bills really could win the division. The Bills must know that this division became up for grabs with the Pats losing Welker, and the two TE's being so banged up. That's my prediction. As for QB, I think they aren't sold on anyone with that high #8 pick and they will pick one to develop at #41 or by trading up. I won't even get into the debate on who that guy might be, I'm tired of that one...LOL

Seriously, how much of a gamble is Nassib for the Bills? The decision on Nassib really should be no gamble at all. Their head coach coached him for four years. Either Doug Marrone thinks Nassib's a Drew Brees franchise level QB or he doesn't. If he doesn't and Marrone thinks Nassib is an Andy Dalton type then is a man who's approaching 50 years old ok with being just good enough for playoffs and not ever good enough to ever win a Superbowl? What if he thinks Nassibs strictly a clipboard holder? This decision on Nassib is fascinating to me. It will amaze me if Marrone goes all in on Nassib. -

I read an article today where Miami's thought to think Lane Johnson is a huge drop off from the top two LTs. I call BS, I think that's a specific smokescreen to tamp down Cardinal enthusiasm for Johnson... "Finally, if the Dolphins do try to trade up, I can almost guarantee it won't be for Johnson. Yes, he is a legitimate first-round selection. Yes, he plays a position of need. But the Fins like Joekel and Fisher much, much, much more than Johnson and have some concerns about Johnson as a left tackle." Read more here: http://miamiherald.t...tml#storylink=c Really?...LOL I'd be very suspicious of what comes out of organizations. Hearing that kind of praise of his arm strength, I'd be a little nervous if I were a Nassib fan. -

That's not necessarily a good sign for the Nassib fans. This is prime "smoke screen" season after all. -
If they are comfortable with his character, I sense that Patterson is their guy. He made a big impression in the SEC and they may feel like he's ready to be a big time player on the outside in the NFL with Stevie playing the slot. It would take big balls to do that...LOL

I'd be doing cartwheels and flips if the Jets picked Ryan Nassib at #9...LOL I'd consider those two Jet games easy wins for Buffalo every year. -

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/blog/rob-rang/22083960/diamonds-in-the-rough-2013-is-matt-scott-the-next-russell-wilson "A year ago I listed Russell Wilson in this space and it is precisely because of the success that he, Robert Griffin III and 2011 second-round pick Colin Kapernick had a season ago that I anticipate Scott contending for a spot within the first 100 picks of the 2013 draft. Like these three young NFL stars, Scott is a dual-threat at the quarterback position and one who demonstrated touch, velocity and accuracy..." Now who'd you rather shoot for in terms of drafting the Bills next franchise QB, the next Russell Wilson or the next Andy Dalton? That's how I view the decision. -
It's on the team's official site. Isn't that a pretty sure sign this is smokescreen stuff? I mean, if you were the Buffalo Bills' FO and you truly wanted Austin and were thinking of taking him at #8, would you actually say on your official website that he's "high" on your radar? That would take balls. To me, that's a sure sign they have no intention of drafting Austin. The comment seems much too exaggerated. I think the Bills want either a defensive stud like Jordan or Jones...or they want the big body/big play receiver Patterson at #8 or after trading down a few spots for an extra pick. I could also see them trading way back with Niners for 3 extra picks in this draft.

As great of college careers Kaepernick and Wilson had, they still got drafted behind the likes of Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Weedon, and Osweiler. Scott's huge strike against him is his only one year of starting. I've fully acknowledged that Scott has a very small sample size to evaluate him on. I also acknowledged that he's a raw talent. With that said, what I've also pointed out and will continue to point out is that Scott does in fact have the same skill set as both Kaepernick and Wilson. He's fast, he's extremely mobile, he can throw on the run, he's got a lightning fast release, he's tough minded and he's very competitive. Not that it matters, but I'll just note that Scott beat Wilson's cone drill times at the combine. He's true "diamond in the rough" stuff. This getting offended by comparisons that are clearly visible on video is ridiculous. Scott's raw, but he's got the skills they both have with the big difference being is that unlike them he just needs along period to sit and learn. I'd much rather wait on a raw QB with franchise ceiling like Scott, than to pick the comfy security blanket Nassib who has a much lower ceiling. -

I was just replying to someone who's dismissive of Scott because he hasn't been "talked about" much. Kaepernick's problem was that the NFL was still wary of these running QBs fitting into the NFL. Wilson's problem was that he was considered way too short for NFL standards. Scott's problem is his very short track record to evaluate him on and his obvious rawness. I think Scott is this year's Kaepernick and Wilson. For differing reasons obviously, but that's how I see it. The Bills did bring him in for a visit so I hope the lack of talk on him is actually a good thing. The less talk and rumors might mean the more interest they actually have in him.
