Aaron Rodgers is the only one I can think of in the last 20 years. Big Ben didn't start right away, but he did later in his rookie year. Not sure if Jay Cuttler started as a rookie, but he did not start out of the chute.

shhhhh luxy is on a role......the rest of us are unrealistic

I mean....there are so many situations of legit franchise QBs to draw a comparison from

The bills have openly admitted they do NOT have the franchise QB which is why they can spend money in other areas on the team. They will continue their search while a caretaker is running the team

    - Teams dont trade their franchise qbs

    - They dont walk in off the street

    - You only get them by drafting them

  2. And Murray is more expensive with more miles and more injury concerns, Kiko will need a new deal as well and no one has seen him play for over twelve months.

It's not the no brainer that some would like us to believe. In fact, it would be a bad trade loudly panned by the national media who would claim Murray is on the decline and Kiko is unproven while Shady is in his prime. That'd be the story, even if it's not true, just like McCoy suddenly being old and on the decline was never a story until he wound up in buffalo.

I just dont understand the thinking (but it is JTSP so why am i so suprised)

Its not about what you would like to have Joe (although I have this sneaking idea that had we got Murray instead of Shady....JTSP would be talking about how Murray is alway hurt......and how Shady is so durable...but I digress)

You miss the point entirely. We win 10 games and drafting a quarterback is NOT the priority. In fact, there have been 50 quarterbacks drafted in the first round in the last 20 years. Of those 50, only 4 went to teams coming off of a season with 10+ wins. In every one of those situations, the existing quarterback was retiring, and all but one went to the HOF (Brett Favre, Randall Cunningham, Steve Young and non-HOF Jake Plummer). The average wins for a team the year before drafting a QB in the first round is 5.1 and lower if you take out the 4 exceptions above. Your logic makes no sense in terms of how teams in the NFL are actually running their teams. In fact, ALL of them. If Matt Cassel is the starter this year and the Bills win 10 games, you should get rid of your expectation of a QB next year because it's simply not happening.

I dont think I have missed the point at all

The ideal situation of drafting a QB is taking one high and then being able to groom him without starting him.

If Cassel works out then he starts this year and next......bridging the gap to a young QB

The 32 year old Matt Cassel had multiple fractures in his foot. IMO there is almost 0 chance Cassel would start every game and last the whole season.

I think Cassel will settle into in the backup/mentor role to Manuel. There simply won't be enough of a gap in play between him and Manuel to justify Cassel starting. If Cassel does happen to win the starting job it will probably only be for 3-6 games tops before he gets hurt again. Then it will be up to Manuel to make the most of what would be his final opportunity with the Bills.

If EJ Manuel looks this training camp like he looked last training camp....he might not only not start but he might be on his way out.

So 10 wins and you still think they'll draft their "QB of the future late in the first round next year" and not just continue to play Matt Cassel? LMAO. You just checked a box for me called "crazy".

you have a 1st round pick you can wheel and deal to move up a bit......

And your Offensive game plan is centered around running the ball...taking a lot of pressure off the QB......

  5.

I'm with you on the issue of Cassel. Quite honestly, the folks that want Cassel to be the starter should have wanted Orton to be the starter as well. They're both journeyman quarterbacks with similar completion percentage, TD/INT ratio, QBR, etc. When all of their measurables are nearly identical in similar situations (having a good or bad defense, having good receivers versus mediocre), I can't see why people would want more of the status quo. I'm not following you at all on Taylor. He's been in the league for 4 years and hasn't been groomed for anything but water boy for Joe Flacco. He's fast and might provide opportunity to use him in the read option, but his accuracy is terrible. It wasn't very good in college either, so there's plenty of data points to work off of. EJ hasn't been much better, but at least has shown us some signs that he can be the part. Carolina, Jacksonville, and Chicago were all game winning drives.

Bridging our way how? So you would rather have a 0.500 record with Cassel than risk a 5-11 season with Manuel? Counter intuitive to planning on drafting QB next season. Also counter intuitive to what the front office is actually doing right now in terms of building a team to win now.

I expect no less then 10 wins

  6. I would argue that his 2 seasons, one 5 years ago and another 7 years ago, are the outliners of an average at best career. He took over one of the greatest teams ever (18-1 Pats). I give Cassel props for his career. Career college backup and 7th rounder. But he is not very talented.

A lot can change in 5 years. Players don't normally improve after 10 years in the NFL when they are on a downward trend (30 tds, 34 ints). This is people trying to talk themselves into Orton. At some point, you are what.

EJ and possibly Taylor need to earn the job, no question. But no fanbase should get excited about starting Matt Cassel. Good guy I'm sure but he is a kick the ball to high hopes. He is an average on his best days type of QB.

The definition of a game manager/care taker QB bridging our way to next years first round pick

I think a lot of people, myself included, like to convince themselves that what they have or the decision they made is the best one and justify it. If we had kept Kiko and signed Murray this thread would be much more in favor of Murray over McCoy but since McCoy is on the team a lot of people are convincing themselves McCoy is better. In reality theyre both really good but good at different things. I think Murray actually fits the Roman system better, based on what he ran in SF (which may not be what he wants to run here) meaning that he is more like Gore than McCoy is but hes oft-injured. McCoy is a game changer though in a way we always hoped Spiller would be. He can get mediocre yards for a large portion of the game and then break a huge run for a TD at any moment. The difference is that we would still have Kiko on the team. While its easy to discredit him because he wasnt on the team last year and he is coming off of an ACL injury its dumb to suggest that you dont want him on the roster. If this same preposition was made for a team none of us care about I think a lot more people would choose Kiko + Murray.

Did you see Phillys line two years ago when Shady had his big year? Evan Mathis was first team all-pro and Jason Peters was second team.

    That is kinda my point.....

The eagles had all kinds of injuries to their line and McCoy was 3rd in the league in rushing

Murray has his big year behind a very good offensive line

  8. what it does show is that it's not the slam dunk some think around here that McCoy > Murray.

    IMO Murray is better too.

But more importantly, if you put them in the same category, then the combination of Murray + Kiko for the same price > McCoy alone .... that's the real comparison.

    hmmmmm

Was Murray available for trade? Lets keep in mind here that we TRADED for the 3rd best rusher in the league last year when you TRADE for a RB that HAVE to come here.....when someone is a FA they go where they want

Does Murray run behind a all pro offensive line.....im pretty sure he did

Also not talked about here.....last year was the first year Murray was able to stay relatively injury free

Meanwhile.....Shady....much like Thurman Thomas....has a running style that keeps him durable AND AVAILABLE TO HIS TEAM

So much wrong with your post....on so many levels

  9. Well considering his career record of 33-38, that's a good thing.

It really is not that simple....

Career records is a TEAM stat.......if you play on @hit teams you gonna have a bad record. He might have been in the wrong system...he might have had lousy protection...he might not have had targets....

And part of the 33-38 was two winning seasons at QB and a pro bowl appearence so.........

  10. What I honestly would like to know is the truth from the FO. (and soon - after the draft)

Was Meh brought in as a mentor

Was Tyrod brought in as a backup or a legit competitor to EJ

Do they have any real faith in EJ

    What exactly is "Meh" anyway?

    Can Meh read defenses

Can Meh get the ball where receivers can catch it

Can Meh make good decisions with the ball

Keep in mind Meh isnt going to be asked to win games.....that is gonna be Shady and Fred Jacksons job

  11. I'm not so concerned about whether the guys are d-bags. I'm more concerned about the undisciplined atmosphere that Ryan seems to create, and guys like Harvin and Incognito will only add to.

Ryan's Jets never made it to the Super Bowl, and were an undisciplined team. Lots of trash talking, and goofy behavior. Remember when Ryan had them go out for pizza or something, instead of practice before a Bills game? Many people here clowned him for it. That silly kickoff where TJ Graham laid down in the end zone? Not a big deal, but gimmicky, and somehow I associate that kind of whimsy with Rex Ryan.

The guy is clueless about offense (just like his dad, and they have had very similar careers) and QB development. I think he is too much of a "player's coach", which to me, means the d-bags are given more freedom to "express themselves", giving everyone a chance to see what jackasses they actually are.

I think it is important to remember that HC's also do learn from mistakes as they go along......The Patriots HC is a perfect example of this......

It could very well be that Ryan now understand that the best thing he can do is let his OC and ST's guys do their jobs.....and he concentrate on what is his strength which is the D. Why in the world would Rex bring in a strong OC like Greg Roman if that was not going to be the case

As for the locker room.....we do have leaders in the locker room.......To me this is guys like Eric Wood, Kyle WIlliams, and Freddie Jackson

  12. At the end of the day what you want is your OL to be completely unknown because no penalty flag is thrown and no defensive player ate their lunch on the way to the qb

You get that out of your line and everyone is thrilled

    A couple of other things

    - S. Henderson will be going into his second year....and this would be the OT that Urbik would be playing next to. Urbik really is a better RG then he is a LG.

    - We have one of the better blocking FB's in the league now....which does help out in blocking schemes for the OL

    - Both Shady AND Freddy are both good blitz pick up guys.....this also helps the OL

Slowly but surely....bills management is improving the protection on the field........I would still like to see another OG so that Urbik can be a relief pitcher.

  13. It will be interesting to see just how EJ looks in training camp this year.....

LAST YEAR he looked horrible......it was one of the really really disturbing things to the fan base how we had heard all this talk of EJ working out in the offseason with someone to fix his mechanics and such....then came into camp and everyone was talking about how bad he looked (and how the other QBs looked horrible as well)

Matt Cassell is a veteran that has found a way to stick around in the league....he as started and finished seasons as a starter.......he has always been around...he won the starting QB spot last year over bridgewater

Tyrod Taylor has been the numbre 2 with the ravens for YEARS

EJ had better really be on his game or he is gonna wash out...these QBs are not going to look bad in camp. Too many years in the pros
