  1. Fitz played on a team with a historically bad defense. One of the worst units the Bills have ever put on the field. Fitz's strength was his attitude and smarts. This defense would be able to recover from the ridiculous INT he would throw from time to time. And Fitz would more than often get 7 points off of a turnover or short filed this defense would create. Fitz and this team would be 11-5 and winners of the AFC East.

I look at Cassell and I see Jauron's wet dream. Dink and dunk and don't mess it up for the defense. That is not what this team needs. This team needs to score early, score off of turnovers, and then let the defense pressure the QB mercilessly. This team needs an aggressive QB not a Trent Edwards type.

I think what Rex is looking for is the exact opposite of what you think we need.

We are looking for a GAME MANAGER

  2. And this does not mean I am down on Seantrel Henderson.......but there are a few reasons why I would like this pick if we are lucky enough for him to fall to us in the 2nd.

    - The guy is very much a athlete.....great feet....good strength....moves well......I view him as a VERY good RT but he has also played some OG.

    - His workout at the combine pretty much matches what I have seen of his play at Oregon

    - Third....and its a private note but my son got a chance to meet him while he was visiting another friend that started on the O line for the ducks......got a chance to hang with the O line before they played the championship game.......this guy is a quality kid. I could see Jake Fisher growing into a quality RT or being able to play multiple positions......

This would open up some things on our O line to help with guard spots.....Seantrel Henderson has also played some OG (I think) and he is also a very good athlete for his size just like Fisher....which makes me think he could move to LG.

Also.....and I am not a fan of this.....but you always have to think about future.....I want to keep Glenn.....but if something bad happens you could move Henderson to LT and Fisher to RT in the future......the best thing would be to keep and play all of them.

  3. At this point I'll doubt EJ even gets a chance to compete for backup QB, he'll prolly will end up having to fight it out with Tuel for 3rd.

Listening to the interviews of the up front bills people I dont think that is the case

It is going to require EJ to play the style he was playing in the first year where he actually would take off and run when needed........but I think that he is going to be a legit opportunity

It will be a competition......and EJ will have to show that he is willing to "sing it" and willing to scramble and not be afraid to do so....if he does those things this will be a interesting competiton....because Cassel plays from the pocket.....

Taylor to me is a wildcat QB.....which actually has its place on a Rex Ryan team

  4. Like everyone else says, this offense is weakest at QB... Stack the box and force the QB to beat you. Blitz all day, stop the run, ignore the WRs until the QB can prove he can handle it.

Ahhh but here is the rub on that......

THis is not Hackett predictable running scheme that Roman employs......Roman is actually a GOOD coordinator. Dont you think that defenses tried to employ this defense against San Fran in all those playoff years? Colin Kaep is NOT a good passer.......the offensive weaposn for San Fran are not any better then what we have now........

He uses a lot of pre snap motion.....and one of the big reasons why Clay was the big aquisition of the offseason was that it does not tip off whether the play is run or pass......because he is both a excellent blocker AND reciever........defenses cannot just "stack the box" on every play because if they do and it is blocked correctly its a touchdown........

Like I have said a lot this offseason.....these are not high school qbs we are putting under center.......they might not be heading to the pro bowl (even though one of them has) but they can throw a simply pass to a wide open reciever

I go back and I look at Spiller's running up the middle.......even thought Spiller and SHady are the same SIZE backs......Shady actually has vision in the hole. Spiller had NO vision and solely relied on speed. If you could take Spiller and Jacksons best traits and put them into one player

    It would be Shady Mccoy

  5. It would not shock me to see Leo get cut......which is unfortunate

We have Gilmore, Graham, Robey.......after your first 3 you have to rely on you drafting when it comes to the corner position. We just drafted a quality kid this last year that doesnt get any playing time because of the talent in front of him.......

I actually dont hate Chris Williams.....but his back injury scares the crap out of me. These big bodies dont recover well from those.

  6. When a new coach comes in, does he bring his own offensive playbook and defensive system?

Or does he bring in an OC and DC and leave the systems up to them?

Do coaches/OCs keep the same systems/playbooks wherever they go?

Or, Is a new playbook developed between the new head coach and his OC for the new team?

When do the players see the new playbook? Do the Bills players have it now in preparation for first team meetings?

I'm wondering if Bills QBs are learning their new playbooks now for spring workouts.

Rookie here, don't beat me up. :)

I think the big thing they have to overcome is terminology.

    But consider this

Rex Ryan runs some very exotic blitz package stuff......however.....the bills got a taste of that when Pettine was the DC.

    meanwhile

Roman runs some VERY complex running formation stuff....and I expect for that to be the thing that takes the longest to put together on the field.

  7.

Yes those Lakers had age against them, one kind of problem. These new Bills have different problems. Harvin has all kinds of troubles. Felton has been suspended. McCoy can be a pain in the ass. Incognito...yea. Don't know much about Clay.

And of course, none of the QB's are very good. There is only one ball, and keeping all these guys happy might not be easy, especially with bad QB play.

New system, new faces, big contracts, blah, blah, blah.

The point is, I see these kinds of player lists often ("look at these guys, unstoppable'), whether it's defenses or offenses, or baseball ("look at this bullpen!"), football, any team sport, and it's never what it seems. People were making these kinds of lists when the Bills signed Mario Williams...there is more to a team playing well. It's more than just the sum of it's parts.

    So...in other words...doomed?

Its always gonna be something if a few of you guys....:)

  8.

It always looks better on paper. Remember when the Lakers had Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq? People said "this team might go undefeated", and that kind of nonsense.

They are making some nice strides, but I would trade all these guys for an elite QB and an excellent O-line. I would swap this whole offense for the Colts offense,.

As a laker fan I rebut this

Yes....those players were assembled...two of them past their primes

Take a look at the ages of the young people coming in that will be relied upon to make plays for the bills......it makes the Clay signing make even more sense.

  9.

It’s been 5 NFL seasons since Cassel’s last 10 win season.

Cassel’s record since that last 10 win season is 9-17 as a starter with a QB rating of about 75.
There wasn't one person on this board talking about wanting to trade for Matt Cassel. If there was, I missed it.
I get that Bills fans want him to be that baseline competent starting QB from 5 years ago, but the numbers say that he's not that QB anymore. Numbers from a very long time frame.

Perhaps we should look deeper that has happened with him since his last 10 win season

    and

it has been discussed till the horse has been sent to the glue factory. This is the type of option that was out there in the the QB market......finding a QB that has had previous success and biuld around them. That is really the only choice the bills have if EJ does not take a step forward this year.

  10. Back to the topic- it would depend on the defensive personnel a lot....

In our own practices Id imagine it would be a pretty basic nickel scheme. Let the front 4 get after the qb/clog lanes/get hands up, Aaron Williams on clay, the 3 cbs matching up on the wrs man up with the other safety and 2 lbs being the disguise/surprise that varies to keep the offense off balance some, but not crazy.

    Back on topic

I guess my answer on this is how did Greg Roman overcome this problem with a QB that cant read defenses and is not an accurate passer in Colin K. (which frankly is true)

I think that regardless of the offensive weapons brought in we are gonna run the ball....A LOT.....and this is why the signing of Clay is so important.

Clay blocks.....we have wide receivers that block.....Felton is a monster blocker

We are going to run the ball out of a bunch of different formations and we are going to use a lot of motion.

Then we are going to use play action off of the committment to the run (and we are going to be able to stay committed to the run because of our dominating defense)

Let them put 8 in the box....we are going to continue to run against it.......and then we are going to burn them badly when they leave pass catchers open.

My questions for this team as it stands right now

    - Do we have the horses up front to move people around even when they sell out to stop the run....even if it is at 4 yards a clip

    - Do we have the horses up front to deep a clean pocket when we decide to pass?

Now...people should not discount coaching when looking at how bad pass protection was last year....we are talking about a coach that kept Urbik on the bench for a string of games while we could not pick up a simple stunt on the offensive line.......

    but

i feel we need more talent on the interior of our offensive line

  11. If you take his full collection of posts in the thread, and not just the first (which reads a bit tongue in cheek, given context) your reaction jumps off the screen more, imo. I don't see the huge deal- qb is a real concern. We're doing all we can to both upgrade the position and give them tools - but we don't have anyone that we know will be able to do it yet. Odds are one of the guys will be serviceable and we will be a good team but will a serviceable qb get us past elite defenses? We will see!

    Good post....fair enough

  12. I noticed that too though as mentioned in another thread I think #2-3 is kind of muddy with the different sets. Woods will get his targets. Sanjay all also mentioned in his interview yesterday that he loved woods in the intermediate stuff. Harvin is going to draw the coverage so Sammy can be targeted more.

Woods does not strike me as the guy that will B word about his touches......he does complain when QBs lead him into big hits.

  13. Please go back up thread and see my reply. I've been here a long while and I am not one of the more negative posters. I do think that unless the Bills can get at least average to good QB play, that the rest of the team could be held back by that. I am not blaming the Bills for not having a better answer at QB, because I know those are very hard to find.

Look, I get that they've pursued a plan to beef up around the QB to hide that weakness and I applaud them for that, but to pretend that won't have a negative effect on the team's performance is not realistic, in my opinion.

So you dont think that an NFL QB cant hit a wide open target? I wonder how all the teams that dont have Brady, Manning, Breez, Rivers, Big Ben, Luck.......I mean there ARE over 30 teams in the NFL......

How in the world do those other NFL teams compete? They dont have a pro bowl qb?

Well...just for the spirit of conversation I will TELL you how

    - They run the ball......hence going out and getting the 3rd best running back in the NFL and keep Freddie Jackson to back him up.

    - They play defense that creates turnovers and keeps giving those crappy QB's chances to make plays

    - They give them receiving options....you just in case the number 1 receiver is covered.....check down options...you know guys like Jerome Felton and security blanket tight ends like Clay

    - The play them in SYSTEMS.......systems that hide their weaknesses.

I mean to listen to some of the fanbase I wonder how in the heck Matt Cassel:

    - Managed to stay in the NFL this long

    - How in the world did he QB two 10 plus win seasons?

    - How in the heck did he win the starting QB competition with the vikings....even though they drafted a QB high.....

JESUS HE SUCKS....should be stocking shelves at Wallmart

Cassel's last full start in week 3 he had 1 TD and 4 interceptions with a 39 QB rating against the Patriots. The only reason he won that Viking QB competition is because Bridgewater was being eased into the starting job.

IMO Cassel just isn't starting material anymore. We shall see.

So which viking NFL front office person are you?

If you suck that bad you dont start to "ease in a highly drafted rookie"

    Sorry....doesnt wash

The key to this offense will be the o-line, IMO. They need to go all-in at the draft to get this right. If Rex & Roman get their way and can impose their will via the ground game, that will open up everything. As much as people like to bash EJ, play action is one of his strengths. Get that line straight, pound the ball, then let EJ have fun with the toys on occasion.

I like that they got a jump start by signing Cog....who I think will start at LG.

Then Urbik took a pay cut....and his best position is RG

    However

If we dont get another veteran O linemen that second round pick HAS to be a offensive guard

  14. Now now, I didn't criticize any of therir acquisitions, indeed I have been a consistent supporter of Whaley and even Buddy Nix. Together, they have put together a very talented roster.

I also am realistic enough to know that finding a good QB is damn hard and I honestly can't point to one that they really have had an opportunity to acquire and blew it. Some may argue that Russell Wilson is that guy, but it sure wasn't obvious to me at that time that he would become a good pro.

However, the reality is that the pass receiving weapons are going to significantly hand-cuffed by the QB play. I really believe that the Bills' best hope is that the light comes on for Manuel because Matt Cassell has had a long career in which to prove that he is even a middle of the pack NFL starter and he has not done so. He is now several years removed from his very good season with KC and I think that believing that he can revert to that form is just hoping and wishing.

I really am not one of the more negative posters here. I do think that a team with this much talent could sneak into the playoffs, but without at least decent QB play, they are not a threat to go far in the playoffs.

    You have to start somewhere

  15.

Good post OP...let's talk some football!

If it were me, I'd play a lot of big nickel (3 safeties) and try to maul the WRs right off the snap; throw off the timing of the short routes.

I'd also have my DL get their hands up at every opportunity, and be looking for screens all day long.

The tough part would be defending Charles Clay, since the above approach really opens you up to getting hit down the seam. Then, of course, there's the possibility of getting smoked deep if Sammy gets off the jam (which he routinely does). I guess I'd be counting on the QB not being good enough to kill me deep with any regularity.

    Bingo

This is why Clay was the bills most coveted free agent target.....

A safety cannot cover Charles Clay

I just don't see Greg Roman planning on Matt Cassel being his starter. A QB who was replaced by Brady Quinn, never got the job back and then was eventually replaced for good with the guy Roman no longer wanted as his starting QB. As a successful NFL OC, how would you want and seek out Matt Cassel as your starting QB given those circumstances?

As for Cassel winning the starting job last year, IMO it was only because they were treating Bridgwater with kid gloves because he bombed his pro day. They simply didn't want to put pressure on him to start the season.

Cassel was decent QB once upon a time. Now he is considered a back up QB only that will give a base level of NFL competition for the guys you are willing to actually start.

Yes this is why he won the starting competition with the Vikings last year even though Bridgewater was drafted. He just hurt his foot.

  16. How? They don't really need to worry about any of the pass catchers with Cassell/Manuel/Taylor at QB.

    Enough of this......

You could hold a raffel every week and pull a fan out of the stands to play QB with all of these targets.....

I realize that we dont have a pro bowl qb....but can we stop acting like we are playing a pee wee QB behind center that is going to curl up in a ball and start thumbsucking every time the ball is snapped.

The idea of loading up on weapons was so that a middling QB could be successful in a SYSTEM......
