1. Did Kent Hull ever make it up to 300 pounds?  Back then, 300 pound O-line men were not very common.  If memory serves me, Howard Ballard was one of about 10 guys in the leauge, playing over 300 pounds, for a couple of years....

Either way, Haslett is obviously referring to Hull.  If so, Haslett, who I loved as a player, is a bigger a-hole than I even remember.  How catty is that, to say something like that, and give all the details, except the player's name, as if nobody would be able to figure it out...Jerk!  Makes me all that much gladder that he is not the head coach of the Bills.  If the Bills are his "dream team" to coach, dream on!

    285526

c'mon - he said that all linemen in that era used them so he's not casting stones. also, if you don't believe that's the truth, there's a bridge in brooklyn i'd be willing to sell you. hull as i recall was either undrafted or drafted really, really late by the nfl, and i suspect that had something to do with his small size. he did play at over 300 pounds for most of his career in the nfl.

  2. I think the greatest incentive to trade for Henry is that it will free up their first round selection to improve their dismal Defense (most notably, their CBs).  If they dont do the trade, they'll be forced to take a RB and neglect their Defense yet again.  Or they could get Henry without losing an offensive starter, draft a player like Antrel Rolle or another stud CB and get better all around.

Just makes sense to me...but these are the Cards we are talking about here...lets hope they finally see the light.

    284990

indeed, it's the cards; they've done everything wrong for so long that doing the right thing may cause a severe allergic reaction. all the same, i would think that adding the 2 of no decent running back for 20 years to the 2 of being a lousy team for 20 years might lead them to the 4 of trying to get a solid running back.

  3. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/crdindex.htm

they have never had a rusher run for 1100 yards since they went to Phoenix in the late 1980s! and only three times have guys have rushed for 1000 yards: adrian murrell in 1998 (1042 yards; 3.8 ypc), garrison hearst in 1995 (1070 yards; 3.8 ypc), and ronald moore in 1993 (1018 yards; 3.9 ypc). in not one of these instances did the back average 4 yards!!

that's an incredible, incredible record of futility. one could easily argue that henry is the best runner the franchise could have since o.j. anderson in his early years. coincidentally, he's the last guy who rushed for 1100+ yards, and that occurred in 1984. if i'm arizona, i'd end this grim record and get a proven (albeit not superstar) back, even if it means swapping third or even second round picks with the bills.

  4. Don't forget NY has some of the most lenient laws regarding who qualifies for gov't assistance. Discounting the allure of opportunity in the Big Apple, why do think there are so many immigrants not only in NYC, but in all of NYS. I'm all for helping people get a leg up, but the system is severely abused and trust me when I say that most arrive knowing how to abuse it.

    284325

metro areas that have been most open to immigrants in the past 20 years are the ones that are most dynamic -- they're the ones who start the small businesses that increase the density of economic growth in neighborhoods. as my wife says, buffalo has had essentially no immigration in recent times despite the fact that the immigrant song is perhaps the most popular song on the radio there!

  5. Uh, dude, you do know that the ONLY reason NYC shows a profit is Wall Street and exorbitant real estate prices, right?

In fact, in the 70s, NYC almost went under.

    284168

uh, dude, the reason the nyc metro area has done so well in recent times is that they have a dense agglomeration of the postindustrial industries that have succeeded in recent times, from law, finance, insurance, banking, and real estate to higher ed (nyu, columbia, and rutgers along with nearby institutions like princeton, stonybrook, and yale) and the medical/pharmaceutical industries. there are a lot of reasons ny has done well, and in any event high real estate prices are a function of the desirability of a locale, not necessarily an economic engine in and of itself. ny is unique, of course - like london and tokyo, they are the central command positions of the global economy. regardless, nyc is in great shape relatively speaking and has basically doled out far more in taxes to WNY than it has received in return.

  6. According to this article, NYS has the highest state and local tax burden in the entire fricken' country.  When combined with federal taxes, only Connecticut ranks higher: A NYS resident hands over 32 percent of his/her income to the bureaucracy.

    http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Taxes/...special=0502tax

    283823

Yet New York City has had one of the more dynamic urban economies in recent US history despite the fact that it's tax burden is higher than Buffalo's. It's not all taxes and government, you know. Buffalo's problems are a lot deeper than that -- declining population since the mid-1950s, no immigration to the city, reliance on an outmoded industrial base, the fact that it's not a corporate headquarter city, etc. etc.

  7. re ben sobieski, he's a 5th rounder, which is a reasonably high pick for a guard? is he a complete washout? i've seen neither hide nor hair of him in some time. in all the talk of demulling/wahle etc., why is it that a 5th rounder who was said to be pretty talented coming out of a great program (iowa) is so useless to the bills?

re travis, it occurred to me that he's freaking out about not being traded, yet we're still weeks from the draft. can't he (or his agent) realize that it's not in most teams' interest to get anything done before the draft? is he that unable to defer gratification?

  8. Don't forget Romeo is the new HC over in Cleveland. He pretty much owned Travis for 4 years as the D coordinator in New England. Something tells me he isn't that impressed with Henry's skills.

    283028

travis ran really well against NE last year - 98 yards against a tough defense in a losing effort.

  9. Okay, so I know this has probably been posted elsewhere, but how many people have actually seen Shelton play every game. Dalls need a QB bad and signed Bledsoe, does that make it a good signing? Maybe Shelton is the same deal. Just cause we need a LT , doesn't mean he is the guy to take the spot. Now, I know may people might think Denny is crazy, but the man built one hell of an offence in MN, and maybe the boy is getting cut for a reason!

Now, the good thing with a trade is if he doesn't work out, you can cut his behind with no cap hit. I would think if you waited to sign him until after June 01, there will be a bonus involved, wedding you somewhat to his contract. Lots of scenarios beyond the obvios IMHO

    283047

EXCELLENT point. I have not seen him play. i do know that arizona has stunk for years, and haven't had a 1000 yard rusher in ages. it may be the case that he's not very good.

  10. And all I am saying, is I do not do that.  I have never celebrated when Drew, RJ, Flutie or even Collins left.  I didn't celebrate for Lonnie left.  But I have been a critic of Travis and his inability to play football for a very long time.  I have been consistant that he needed to be replaced since early on.  This team was not winning with his style and one dimension, and this was proven correctly, even with Drew's screw ups last year when with a solid D, a Sloid ST and a RB, who can actually do multiple things well.

    282850

well, for the record, i was a huge critic of henry last year. in 2002 and 2003, he hit the hole quickly and with authority -- sort of like emmitt smith -- but overall did too many other things poorly for me to be high on him. a lot of that strikes me as a fundamental lack of intelligence. of course, many idiots do just fine in the nfl (barely literate is ample qualification to play RB in the nfl), but he seems to be an idiot supreme.

  11. No you are being petty.  I said post when he gets 1450 and you stated he got 1458, like it was an in your face.  Well you are wrong.  He didn't get it.

    282831

whatever. enjoy your little victory. and by the way, i never said that i was a fan of henry -- i've been a critic for a long time. all i was saying was that too many people here get too wrapped in condemning players who aren't happy, who want to leave, who want more money, who refuse to sign, etc. etc.

  12. I guess you are kind of new here...once the Bills decide they are going to part ways with a player (and in some cases before) Bills fans re-write history, and warp reality, so they feel can feel like the team is making all the right moves, and they can sleep better at night...it is all part of that thin-skinned, inferiority complex that Buffalo, and Buffalonians seem to adhere too, for no good reason...said player, once no longer a Buffalo Bill, is a p.o.s. who never did anything to warrent their adoration...they forget just two seasons ago, when they were saying that McGahee, who had  yet to play a down in the NFL, was a prima donna, didn't have the heart and grit that Henry has (or I guess I should say had!).  Travis Henry's biggest crime is that he is not as good as Willis McGahee...ignore the fact that there are only a few backs who might be....Travis is a "scumbag, and p.o.s"...just wait until Willis McGahee is demanding a "break the bank or trade me" contract...it will be coming soon...

    282794

no truer words have been said. of course, no one will take to heart what you have to say, which is too bad. it means that whenever a player leaves, bills fans will give him an extra kick in the ass to speed it along. my god, there were some people here lashing into freaking rick demulling for deciding not to sign with a mediocre franchise, which is what the bills are these days.

  13. When Travis reaches 1500 yards, hell even 1450 yards let me know.  He hasn't done that yet.  Also, when he makes the pro bowl on his own merits not when three guys in front of him bow out because they are injured I also will listen.

Until then this is just further proof that Travis is and has been a locker room cancer and a complete and total jerk.  I would love to have TD trade him to the Green Bay, just so he can freeze his ass on the bench behind Green.

    282724

he rushed for 1458 in 2002

  14. From what I've been told, Hines Ward also has no ACL in one of his knees.

I'd always dismissed it is as some goofy legend cuz I didn't think you could ball without an ACL, but if Garza has the same condition then maybe it is true.

    281704

tony siragusa also allegedly doesn't have an acl, which is why he was an undrafted FA coming out of pitt. it didn't seem to hold him up ...

  15. To chill beer quickly...

Add ordinary table salt to a cooler filled with ice, water, and beer.  That will drop the water temperature to about 22 degrees farenheit and cool beer in about 6 minutes.

    274021

thanks. makes a lot of sense, once you think about it ...

  16. I am bothered about his compensation as well and I keep posting about it.

I know we could free-up some money now by restructuring his contract, but do we really want to?  I guess if we could do it in a way that would still allow us to cut him in a year or two without making the cap hit worse, than I would do it.  But I don't think this is possible because as a part of a restructuring he would likely get a new cash bonus.

I also don't think he is going to take significantly less money per year on average in the new years of an extension even if he gets a cash bonus now.

The real question is whether his contract was standard for where and when he was picked (including escalators) or did we screw it up.

If this is a standard contract, there is no way I would want to draft in the top ten (or maybe the top 20) in a draft.

    273541

there is no need to restructure if the bills remain comfortably under the cap, which the bills are. restructuring may create cap space this year, but as far as i can see, that's not eve necessary because the bills don't seem to want any of the higher profile free agents and remain comfortably under the cap. restructuring will, however, create problems later. you may think williams isn't worth it, but that's not really in issue - what matters is the impact on the entire cap scenario, and right now that's negligible. also, remember that the bills don't have to pay a first round pick this year.

  17. not a problem......I'm not really all that attached to either of them.....they both had their moments, but I'm glad they're both gone. I think it's clear that Flutie was the more successful QB, but there were some times when RJ really showed some balls......the KC game and the Tenn playoff games were two examples.

    273285

yep - johnson was a talented player who did show toughness. the other stuff overwhelmed that for me, however. as for losman, i like him - he's got some moxie and seems like he has a genuine personality. so far, he looks like rob johnson from the negative zone (and his hometown of venice, CA is the negative image of orange county, RJ's home base). that's a good thing, in my opinion.

  18. Was I talking about Flutie?  Pretty sure I was talking about RJ.

    273274

sorry - i was referring to madbuffalodisease's post. look -- i'm hardly the hugest flutie booster in the world, but i loathe rob johnson and everything the guy stood for. i was at ucla when he was at usc, and i watched him choke 3 years in a row against both ucla and nd despite having, in succession, 3 first round receivers playing for him -- curtis conway, johnnie morton, and keyshawn johnson. he also had tony boselli as his left tackle. (plus, when his brother, bret johnson -- who was the #1 overall qb recruit in the mid-90s -- didn't get the starting job at ucla, he cried to the media about unfairness and then transferred to michigan state, where he then flamed out.) also, i'm sorry, but if you're playing in buffalo and kvetching about it (as he did every chance he could immediately after he was dumped) and also hopping on the next 737 to So Cal every chance you get to escape buffalo (as if Orange County has anything resembling interesting culture), then you're not getting my vote. flutie, like him or not, at least has some freakin' charisma. i watch football for entertainment, and players are entertainers. johnson has negative charisma. that's pretty much all i have to say on the subject.
