actually, i do. i guess what i'm trying to get at is that the guy strikes me as either painfully stupid, painfully ignorant, or painfully inarticulate. it's pretty apparent in pretty much every quote from him that i've read. now i certainly don't expect football players to be rocket scientists. obviously, none are. it's just that i haven't seen anyone in some time in a bills uniform who has come across as so unintelligent. he makes travis -- who can actually sound coherent and lucid in interviews -- seem like a valedictorian. it may be that he's bright but inarticulate, but if so, he still gives off a la di da impression that's not particularly endearing.
and peter, it has nothing to do with the U, a school i respect and which has produced many a bright nfl player!

... except for saban in the 60s. and even saban brought the bills back to life in the 70s as a coach with prior head coaching experience. the only other successful ones were levy, knox, and phillips.

re all of the above responses, my post line made no comment about his commitment to his profession. it was a reference to his noggin's contents.

"Besides the uncertainty over Losman, there’s a question how much McGahee — he actually asked the media, before the San Diego game, what conference the Chargers were in — is committed to Buffalo, or his profession."

he was pretty mediocre at LT for the broncos, and the broncos did not try to keep him beyond offering him a bargain basement salary.

they went 11-5 in 1994 and made it into the second round of the playoffs ...

I'm not that worried about JP having a bad day in his first windy wintry game. In Kelly's second season, he played the Pats at home in December with a chance to hold a share of the AFC East lead. The weather was very bad and so was Jimbo. He seemed to play better in bad weather after that one. I'm not saying JP will turn into Jim, but I expect him to be a good quarterback and expect that he will learn how to play in bad weather.
jimbo had the excuse of being woefully hungover, as i recall ...
-
Well, you'd think Van would know better than that as he's seen plenty of football...because that' is just FLAT OUT WRONG. JP's accuracy has already improved from the beginning of the season. Eli Manning couldn't hit the broad side of a barn last year. Maybe the interviewer should have asked Chevy Van about that.
jp was 10-27 the other day, and manning is having major accuracy issues this year in ny. the times had an article about it the other day saying that it greatly concerned the coaching staff (despite the 9-4 record). there's a reason that so many of their wins are nail biters ...

Since you brought up that last SB, let me throw out my most "stinging" memory of Marv Levy.
Marv had taken over play calling whenever the ball was inside the 10 yard line (a baffling strategy if you ask me)... Well, at the end of the 1st half with the ball on the 5ish yard line and 3rd down, what does our Head Coach call?
A fuggin' shovel pass against the fastest defense in the league...
Nice call Marv. You guaranteed a FG when a TD was a real possibility. It set us up nicely for the James Washington fumble return to start the 2nd half.
yes, i hated the shovel passes too. other than that, though, i thought they were well prepared and had a pretty good defensive game plan. then jimmy figured he could run at phil hanson for 15 straight plays and not suffer any ill consequences.
-
of course - he can certainly get better, and i honestly think that he has one of the best arms in the league. favre is the only player i can think of that throws with that velocity and crispness. he's certainly got a world of physical talent.
-
i watched the ne game and while he was hurried all game long, there were a lot of throws where he wasn't and he was simply off target. you could say that it's the weather, but if you're going to be a buffalo qb, you've gotta be able to make throws in that weather. it's the defining feature of a quality buffalo qb.

There are three ways a coach can contribute to his team's success:
- Motivating the players. Marv seemed excellent in this area.
- Choosing coordinators and assistant coaches. Marv's record here is decidedly mixed. His only offensive coordinator was Marchibroda; everyone else was a failure while in Buffalo. His only defensive coordinator was Wade Phillips; all his other attempts at coordinators failed.
- Contributing to game day X's and O's. Belichick does this in New England by looking for opponent tendencies to cleverly exploit. Speaking of Belichick, it was clear the Bills were heavily outcoached in their first Super Bowl. Overall, Marv's contribution to X's and O's was disappointing.
If Tony Dungy can take a Bill Polian roster and go undefeated (or pretty close thereto), Marv Levy should have been able to take a Bill Polian roster and at least get a Super Bowl win.
the only time the bills had superior talent in those super bowls was in the giants game, and obviously, they could have won that one. they were outclassed talent-wise by both the redskins and the cowboys. the bills actually had an *excellent* game plan in the final super bowl (emphasizing short passing -- kelly was 19/26 in the first half), and it gave them a td lead at halftime. after that, though, it all came down to talent, and the cowboys were simply too much for the bills.

In 2005, "leadership" and $5 gets you a cup of coffee at Starbucks....
"Leadership" isn't going to rack up wins against a healthy Patriots team. Marv won with a single set of spectacularly talented guys of which many were hall of fame deserving.
You brought up Marchibroda, but what about the cluster !@#$ that was Breshnahan and Shofner as co-coordinators?
After he was forced to remove that abortion from the team - what about letting Dan Henning install the "H-Back" offense w/o the personnel to do that?
It is one thing to "lead" a team overloaded with HOF talent, provided by the best GM in the game today, into battle - it is quite another to actually take a team that has average talent and put them into a position to win against equally, if not more talented, teams. Marv has never shown that ability and in fact I could list dozens of examples where his leadership failed this team in their pursuit of their goals, but I realize this isn't the place to lift the curtain on the wizard...
in 1995, the bills were going to face the browns in cleveland on monday night. the browns were picked by many to be the best team in the afc based on the talent and the coaching (belichick). they were coming off of a playoff season and had very high hopes. before the game, it came out that belichick had said that levy was a joke whose ideas were so antiquated that he had actually run the wing t offense. belichick sort of denied it, but not really; levy was pissed. the bills came in, and basically ran their vanilla offenses and defenses, matching up skill against skill. the bills kicked belichick's arrogant ass straight out to lake erie.
by the way, do you in any way think that the dallas cowboys ran anything other than vanilla offenses and defenses in the johnson years?
putting good players in a position to make plays is more of a strategy than you apparently think it is, and usually is more effective than the rube golbberg machine offensive plays that we are now periodically plagued with.

I think you're forgetting about the blown officiating call that even got the game into overtime. It was an even more egregious mistake than the OT call and without it OSU would have been able to easily run out the clock in regulation.
The team that should have won did win.
And no, I'm not an Ohio State fan.
simon, i hear ya, and i know what play you're talking about. that said -- and to parrot badolbilz -- the play to which i referred was literally the deciding play of the game. if it's called the right way, miami wins. the play to which you're referring, which occurred (as i recall) with about 2 1/2 minutes to go, was indeed a bad call, but if called correctly the game still wouldn't have been over -- osu still would have had to make a couple of plays. also, i'm not a fan of either team, so it's not as if i had anything invested in it. at the time, though, since my brother lives in columbus and his wife went to osu, i was pulling hard for them. i'm a wimpy pac-10 fan (and fan of the most fraudulent pac-10 team of all, ucla), though, so what do i know?

When he was first hired I think I made some Greek joke about him actually having "2" Achilles heels. One definitely being the QB position, the other being that he's had trouble with 1strnd picks in the past. Then one of his first big moves is to combine the two troubles by trading a 1strnd pick for a QB. Talk about burning your bridges before you get to them.
I'd like to see that 1strnd pick used on a OTackle so we can kick Gandy over to guard. An OLine of bluechipLT/Gandy/Preston/Vilarial/Peters might be very serviceable.
my guess is that it will come down to grade. if the lt at hand is better than the dt, they'll take the lt. if the dt is better, then vice versa.
I don't see it that way yet. At his age I doubt Ralph Wilson is eager to start from scratch and Donahoe has proven in the past that he is perfectly capable of building and maintaining a very good football team. He may be gone, but I get the sense he's smart enough to talk his way into a 50/50 chance of at least keeping his job for another year.we'll see in about 3 weeks!

That is an awful lot of conclusions and a very strong sentiment set up by rumors. Please explain why you think he is a pr*ck (apart from the 'best back in football' comment). Even assuming you have heard him enough to make a judgment of his literary skills, who cares how weak his vocabulary is ?
How does anyone know whether he does or does not want to play in Buffalo ? This question is different from whether he wants to play on a team with a losing record.
i may be being too harsh, but he has always seemed pretty arrogant going back to his miami days when he claimed that the reason the team lost to osu was because he wasn't in there. actually the reason they lost was because of a horrible pass interference call in ot (miami should have won). also, along with the too easy arrogance, he has always come across as pretty nonchalant and vacant in the interviews he's given. also bear in mind that i don't think being a pr*ck is a bad thing in pro football -- you *have* to be somewhat crazy and violent to play the game. as for his vocabulary, no it's not a big deal, and i was mostly joking (although i really do think his command of the language is very limited). he really does seem kinda dumb, though -- not that there's anything wrong with that!
for the record, i want him to be on the bills, be happy to be in buffalo, and help make them into a winner.
i rest my case re wile e. mcgahee, supergenius
