Bingo. Having Thurman back in the day helped immensely, as he could catch as well as any true RB in the history of the game. And as has been discussed on this board forever, the real key was having a tight end that could be a decent run blocker and be a good enough receiver to split the seem. That is going to be key now. Everyone needs to be smart and versatile, but no one needs to be great.

Parrish will NOT be traded this season for draft picks. I don't think the front office would do that without the coaching staff's blessing. And there is no reason DJ would say OK, as he knows he needs to win now or not be around to benefit from the next draft. So the only way Parrish is traded is if it for a player who can immediately fill a current need. Maybe package Parrish along with a draft pick for a linebacker, etc.

I certainly would not say it was originated by the Bills. But Jim Kelly, Ted Marchibroda and company did perfect it. Sam Wyche, Boomer Esiason ran a different version, actually beating Jim Kelly and the Bills with it before the Bills started their own version.

Buffalo News Guide to Training Camp 2009
scribo replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
FYI -- Pittsford Sutherland's lot was vastly underused compared to the others on Saturday -
There are no rules limiting defensive substitutions. I believe the rule Fingon was talking about is the one that mandates the offense allow the defensive the opportunity to make substitutions when it makes substitutions. For example, if the Bills swap a RB out for a WR, they must allow the defense reasonable time to switch one player such as a LB for CB. But the D is free to attempt substitutions even when the offense isn't changing any personnel. With Edwards standing over center, studying the D, he should have a very good idea of what defensive players are on the field and predict when the D will try to make subs.

Ha ha. That was while back. See you back over there in about three years.

Why Does Transportation To And From Camp Suck So Bad?
scribo replied to Steely Dan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There are some decent points made in this thread, but the bottom-line is that the there are people here complaining that what they are being given for practically nothing isn't good enough. You get what you pay for. There are cab companies, there are RTS buses that drop off right across the street from SJF. What matters is that the attendance has been great. -
One can only divide the locker-room if their are players railing against him. It doesn't seem there are other leaders who would take up a side against him. Maybe Parrish? I don't think so.

It means everyone keeping their eyes on Edwards and being ready for a snap at any time, yes. I've read there is a standing play or two for the no-huddle to be run anytime a quick snap is needed. They are usually a QB keeper and a quick out to a pre-selected WR. If the Bills keep looking at Edwards as a young QB, he will never be a veteran. Making this change must come with the removal of any and all proverbial handcuffs he's worn his first two years. This offensive scheme can give the linemen advantages. For one, it will force big DTs, often used in rotations, to stay on the field longer than they want and in undesirable situations. Putting our linemen up against run stuffers on passing plays and passrushers on running plays would be good for us. I cannot believe you're saying this move is to sell tickets. Jauron and Schonert know this is their last chance. I am am sure of that. If this doesn't work, they're not going to work for the Bills anymore. I have to believe the coaches are focused on winning not tickets at this point. Oh, and this is a much riskier move than just trying to do what they can with a traditional offense. When the no-huddle doesn't work, it can turn very ugly. Wouldn't that be great? Who knows if it will work, I am just talking about the theories behind the scheme. And I can see the team has been building over the past two years for this. So now is the time. If it works, great! If it doesn't, back to the damn drawing board with new coaches. But that's just where the Bills are at this point.

The Bills apparently didn't have a strong leader. And it seems they are willing to let him lead. Sounds like a perfect situation. A large part of his past issues were that the Iggles had a strong leader who didn't want nor need another leader. In Dallas, it seems the team didn't want their main locker-room leader to be a WR instead of their highly-paid QB. Jim Kelly's comment (you could walk into the Bills' locker room last year after any given game and not be able to tell if they have won or lost) means a lot to me. I would have to presume T.O. will immediately remedy that enormous problem. He wants to win, he wants to succeed, and he won't be happy if doesn't feel his teammates want the same.

Watch Peyton Manning. He is so proficient at reading the defense, the Colts long ago decided it was a better to give those seconds normally spent in the huddle to Manning to work his magic at the line. Yes, the D can substitute, but try getting a defensive lineman off the field and a linebacker on the field without getting caught out of position. "Setting" early is not required. The linemen are not "set" until they put a hand down, and in the no-huddle, they often play without putting a hand down at all. Of course, receivers and backs can move around, as long as you don't have more than one in motion as the ball is snapped. But a no-huddle team has to be able to run a large percentage of its plays from any one set.

There is no hiding it. Almost the entire training camp is open the to the public, and you can bet every cent you own that the Pats* and other teams have scouts at these practices, not to mention the preseason games. This isn't the same as going to a hurry-up offense in the middle of the game to try to catch the opposition off guard. When you're going to become a no-huddle team, which it really appears to be what the Bills are doing, you have to game plan keeping in mind your opponent is gaming planning for a no-huddle team. It is no longer about catching anyone off guard; it is about creating different favorable match-ups than you could with a traditional offense. The Bills have put so much emphasize on getting players with intelligence and athletic mobility, this is the obvious step. I for one am optimistic.

TKO says WASSSUP to Bills fans!
scribo replied to Wilson from Gamehendge's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
TKO was a fan favorite here, before he was even a Bill. Remember, he said when deciding on signing with the Bills he took into account the treatment we gave him when he came as a Bengal just before he became free agent. Bills fan were cheering him and telling him we wanted him to become a Bill. -
That might be the worse editing I've ever seen on national TV.

Programming note: Live chat with Ralph Wilson
scribo replied to Lori's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In his defense, we are use to these chats with sports writers. Ralph is not a writer, so he is not going to be quick and witty like Tim Graham. But the questions are very bland. Edit: Then again, it has been almost 10 minutes since his last response. Edit again: Once posted, the next response shows only three minutes elapsed between questions! And it's over now. -

Agreed. All fluff so far. And too many "who is the greatest Bills ever" and what is yuor best memory. And he answers them all the same -- I cannot pick just one. It doesn't look like he is going to field any serious questions. I guess there is no reason for him to.
