2001: Nate Clements. Result: contract expired after five years.
2002: Mike Williams. Result: cut after four years.
2003a: traded for Drew Bledsoe. Result: Bledsoe released after three years.
2003b: Willis McGahee. Result: McGahee failed to provide enough of an upgrade over Henry to be worth a first round pick.
2004a: Lee Evans. Result: chosen 13th overall, there is considerable doubt whether Evans can ever be the go-to guy.
2004b: Losman. Result: Losman is in serious jeopardy of losing his starting spot to Craig Nall, Green Bay's 3rd string QB in 2005.
Wow, I never noticed your sig before. Talk about spin! "There are doubts Evans can be a go to guy." No arguing with with those facts! Ever consider becoming a press secretary for the intelligent design folks?

I predict the Bills will trade down. What will cinch it is if any of the big 3 QB's are still on the board.

No, actually, I have been a Bills fan for almost 40 years. Billy Jo, Ferragamo, Mathison, and Dufek were never viewed by anyone as anything other than stop gap QB's on horrible rosters. Ferragamo and Hobert were with the team for what, about 5 weeks each, before being cut? Mathison and Dufek were undrafted free-agents, who were supposed to back-up Ferragamo. I would take Todd Collins first 4 or 5 starts over JP's....JP was/is a first round draft pick that then team management gambled an entire season on. He was pretty awful. No better than any of the guys you mentioned.
Ferragamo actually put up some pretty gawdy stats his first few starts with the Bills. Too many int's and not enough TD's, lots of yards. Hobert never even started a game! If JP wasn't at the bottom of the barrell, he wasn't far...
Whatever. Arguing with JP-haters is pointless.

Actually, the importance of winning in the trenches is possibly the most common theme on this board, and rightly so. But while Super Bowl teams win in the trenches, they also have top players elsewhere. Say you had a choice between drafting the next Jim Kelly, or the next Phil Hansen. Could you honestly say you'd be better off taking Phil? Or what if it came down to a choice between the next Jerry Rice, or the next Ruben Brown? Would you rather have Antonio Gates or John Fina?
My point is that finding greatness--especially in the first round--is a higher priority than taking a guy just because he fills a need.
It's the classic chicken-vs-the egg analogy. You need players at the skill positions, but how do you know what you have when they are running for their lives? But you need players...but you need blockers...but you need players...you get the idea.

You must be like 16 years old, because you obviously don't remember "all-pros" like Billy Joe Hobert, Vince Ferrigamo, Bruce Matheson, Todd Collins, and Joe Dufek. (I'm sure I'm forgetting some other gems) The list is endless. Trust me, JP Losman hasn't even come near the bottom of the Bills all-time QB barrell.

I'm in LV for the next few days, staying at the Orleans. Happened to glance at the NFL Super Bowl odds. Before I check out, I'll put $10 on the Bills at 55-1. In case you're wondering, only 3 other teams have longer odds: Jets at 70-1, Niners and Titans at 110-1. Best odds are Colts at 6-1, Pats are 7-1, Fins are 12-1.
I wish I had put $10 on the Sabres at the start of the season!

This just in, directly from the Boston Bills Backers:
The management at the Harp has assured me that if they can get the Sabres game on MSG tonight, they will show it. Until game time, however, it's hard to say if it will actually be available, given blackout rules and so forth. It's also dicey given that MSG might also be carrying the Rangers/NJ game, and we can't tell which feed we will get. So, basically, if the game can be seen in the Boston area, the Harp will have it. I'm sorry we can't be any more specific than that.
So there you go.

In the process of transferring some of the early season games to DVD, I looked at the replays in 20/20 hindsight. My verdict - this was a much better team than 6-10. Even after Spikes was gone, the D played well enough to keep them in the game.
However, the offense could not do its job. To me, it was the combination, in order, big Mike getting hurt and Jerman subbing in (before Peters got there) and Losman not being able to handle the job. Some may switch the two. I view them as interchangeable. You may also throw in Clements' playcalling that threw Losman to the wolves. But, when you objectively look at the replays and focus on the defensive alignments, you may note that TC or MM had little choice but to have Losman pass more. When you factor in 8-man fronts, McGahee's laziness, and an injured right side of the line, the stage was set for Losman to fail. He largely did, early on.
I haven't reviewed the 2nd half of the season yet.
That sounds about right. Nobody is saying that Losman was great. He had problems, but nothing unexpected from a first-year starter playing behind a poor line. Will he become a good NFL QB? We don't know. But to declare him a bust already is crazy talk.

I speak from my personal knowledge as a graduate of UB that there are in fact easy majors at UB, ones that would be equivalent to the programs you cited above. I'd also take issue with you that the major issue holding UB back as a program is the fact that there are not any easy majors for the jocks. If someone told you that, I'd question their motives and submit it might be a case of scapegoating.
Personally, I'd rather see them drop to I-AA in football and pick up a DI hockey team.
Cheers
You're a UB grad? They why "NY Orangeman," hmmmmm?

Do you disagree from actual knowlegde or just your opinion? Because I know folks connected to the UB Athletic department, and it's a fact there are no gut degrees like Phys Ed or Communications, or what-have-you. That's not opinion, it's fact.

You have the right idea. But it's not so much "poor" fans as "poor" in corporate presence. There are a few big companies based in Rochester and Syracuse, but still not enough. Andthose companies have to be convinced dropping $$$ on the Bills is a good thing.
When you have teams like New England charging $65 for the "privilage" of watching the NFL draft at Gillette Stadium, you have to wonder if area fans would ever be so gullible.

Uh, right. Kind of like saying "we had no idea the levees would breach" after Katrina?

Look, there are plenty of schools ranked higher than UB academically. Michigan and Virginia are two I can think of. But those schools have a "dumb jock" major so they can recruit better players. UB doesn't have that, and that's a huge problem.

Does UB have a phys ed major? If not, that is surprising. I know some of our football guys are phys ed majors that surely aren't splitting the atom in their classes. I'd be willing to bet that most of our guys have "real" majors though. Miami is also a pretty tough school, (I think slightly more selective than UB for undergrad admission) so it's far from impossible to field a decent team of elligible players at a school that's strong academically. I'm sure that UB's academic standards and lack of a "gut major" have some affect on recruiting, but I don't know if you can call it the biggest problem.
I can assure you it is UB's #1 recruiting problem. How many blue chip recruits want to play at a bad program AND have to bust their a$$es to stay academically eligible? To answer your question, there is no Phys Ed major at UB. Also, I'd be willing to bet more Miami OH players are Phys Ed majors than you think.

Probably because they are VERY far off from being competitive in the MAC, let alone a major conference. I've seen pretty much every Miami football game since I came to school here 4 years ago. The dropoff in talent level between the perennially good to mediocre MAC schools and UB is dramatic. I've seen us play UB here at home 2 times in the last 3 years and honestly it was like men against boys. It looked like a college team against a mediocre to bad high school team.
I'm not trying to rip on UB at all, and I give the kids who play on the team all the credit in the world for sticking it out and playing football simply because they love it. When you see all the other competition in the MAC week in and week out though, it's obvious that UB isn't in the same class. The fact that there are 5 or 6 MAC schools that are usually pretty good and get some national tv exposure (and maybe even a couple with a top 25 ranking) must really hurt UB's recruiting. Plus, I don't know what UB's facilities are like, but here at Miami they are wonderful. In the last 2 or 3 years we have gotten permanent lights for night games, field turf, a huge jumbotron, and the 3/4 of the stadium was completely rebuilt. We have a state of the art training facility that is only open to athletes. I think some other MAC schools have recently done major upgrades to their sports facilities as well. If you're a recruit that has a choice between that and UB, what's your decision?
I'm sure Turner Gill will bring some improvement to the program, but to think that UB has a chance of even being a MAC contender anytime soon may be a bit of a pipe dream. There are just too many other MAC programs that are better choices from a recruit's perspective. Obviously anything is possible, but I just feel like the cards are stacked heavily against UB being a competitive D1 program anytime in the forseeable future.
UB's facilities are not bad. They have a 30,000 seat stadium that is pretty nice. I don't know about training facilities, etc. I heard they lack some things. But that is exactly why Gill is scheduling these big payday games. UB will clear over $1.2mil this season alone. Expect most of that to go to the football program.
Actually UB's biggest problem in recruiting is that they don't have a gut major for dumb jocks to take. Academically UB is a tough school. Finding athletes who can play AND keep their grades up is damn near impossible. Expect that to change under Gill and AD Ward Manuel.
If UB can't compete against Miami OH, then what are they going to do against Auburn??? Maybe Gill figures after Auburn, Wisconsin, and BC, the MAC will look easy. Either way, I'm looking forwad to seeing the Bulls under Turner Gill.

It's only the first time they did that (I believe.) Besides, Auburn was going to pay something like $600K and WVU was offering $200K. I'm sure WVU would have done the same thing.
I can understand UB not being very attractive to a major conference right now, but why do you say they will never be invited?
