1. all in all, the offense played great in that game except for screwing up in the red zone - one flutie int, a fumble that wasn't entirely his fault (he was trying to make a play and was blindsided by armstrong), a moulds fumble early on after a big catch, and the reed gaffe.

re the reed gaffe, he was tackled at the one, threw a fit, and the bills were moved back to the 16. they then kicked a fg. next, the bills recovered an onside kick and moved down to the dolphins' 7 yard line. that's when flutie was blindsided from the right and sacked.  flutie had a spectacular game, statistics-wise, on the road against the 3rd best defense in the nfl. the dolphins also led the league in INTs. here are flutie's stats: 21/36 for 360 yards (10 ypa), 1 td pass, 1 int, a 90.05 qb rating, and 4 rushes for 29 yards.

It really comes down to how we feel about a player. We love Flutie so we remember the good times, and sweep the bad things under the rug. We hated Rob Johnson so his good times are downgraded and his mistakes are magified.

  2. I was talking with a Bills fan I met today, and he said the Bills should have drafted Leinart and gotten rid of Losman.  Assuming hotter heads prevailed and this ridiculous suggestion became reality, I wanted to know why, and the gentleman said he "didn't like Losman's attitude."  Now, I've heard rumors, and I saw pre-draft reports, but I would love to see some of those who are in the anti-Losman camp come up with something written, some direct quotes, or some statements from Bills players that really call attention to Losman's poor attitude.

What I have heard are measured responses from Bills players that seemed to say that they didn't think that his being handed the job was good for him or the team, a notion it seems Losman himself agrees with.  What I have read are articles that seem to say the guy values the chance he's been given, is conscientious, likes Buffalo, and understands he needs to work hard to earn the job this year.  What I'm looking for is undisputable information that says the guy is what a lot here seem to think he is.

What I'm sick of is unsubstantiated evidence that is giving the guy a bad rap and seen as grounds for judgment when the guy has started all of 8 NFL games.  Judging him on his football merits, or worries on a lack thereof, are something quite different and, IMO, justifiable to this point.  I still think the investment and the reports on him merit a real chance this year.

Those who feel differently and have some statements to back it up, step up, why don't you?

You want to know what they mean by "attitude?" The fact that JP was named starter without a competition. That rubbed the veterans the wrong way. JP did nothing wrong. He studied hard and tried to do his job, but he got tagged as TD's "golden boy." You remember high school...it's the same thing.

  3. Doug Flutie's 2 seasons as starting QB for the Bills = 2 playoff berths

Since Flutie got slabbed in the back by the Bills = 0 playoffs berths

My friends, the curse of Flutie is upon this franchise.  If I'm Ralph, I give Flutie a spot on the wall of fame and an annual Flutie Day.  Then perhaps, the football gods will relent and good football will return to One Bills Drive.

    691742

You want to talk "teflon??" It's funny how NOBODY remembers how Doug fumbled the ball on the Miami 1yd line with seconds remaining in that 1999 playoff game we lost to the Fins.

Rob Johnson, on the other hand, gets blamed for the "Music City Miracle" even though he drove the Bills to what should have been the winning FG.

    Flutie = great PR.

  4. I do have a signed #7 Bills jersey from Doug on my rec room wall, and a signed football as well. I give him credit for energizing the fans and selling out the luxury suites when we needed it. I also understand that he's a pretty good hockey goalie, though he wasn't allowed to play while he was in the NFL (injury clause in contract.) Maybe he'll pick it up again.

  5. I see quite often on this board negative comments about Smerlas.  What did he do to annoy so many people.  I'm not defending him, I'm just ignorant as far as what prompted the hatred.

    691520

I live in NH so I can hear WEEI. Smerlas is on mostly during football season, or the draft, any football-related event etc. Smerlas never skips a chance to mock out and put down the Bills and the city of Buffalo. I've been listening to him for a couple of years now. It's gone way beyond expressing an opinon on how good/bad the Bills are. It's turned into downright hatred.

Smerlas apparently still carries a grudge against the Bills, and Levy in particular, that he was cut from the team. So along with becoming the biggest Patriot/Belichick ballwasher, he takes evey chance to talk about how much the Bills suck, Levy is an idiot, Wilson is a fool, and how much the city of Buffalo sucks in general, which his WEEI buddies have a good laugh about.

I want to stress this has NOTHING to do with having a negative opinion of the Bills as a team. Guys like Steve Tasker who may criticize the Bills as part of their national media duties are just doing their jobs. There is a difference between making a critical judgement of a team and being malicious.

It's a free country and a man is entitled to any opinion he wishes to express. I only ask why should the Bills continue to honor a player who has such deep contempt for his old team.

  6. Quote from the Sports Xchange:

"Buffalo, 1-10 last year, has an impressive schedule outside the Mid-American

Conference next fall, facing Auburn, Boston College and Wisconsin"

I think "impressive" is a very kind word to describe the slaughter.  Here in

Youngstown, OH, the Youngstown State Penguins (Div 1AA) are getting into this act.

Last year they played Pitt and got beat 48-0.  This year, they're playing

Penn State.  These are what college coaches call "money games".  Youngstown

St. got a check for about 350 grand to play Pitt last year, and will get close to

a half million to be destroyed by Penn State this year.  It's like revenue sharing for colleges.

It's all about the networking, just like in the pros.....Jim Tressel coached YSU for fifteen years before taking the Ohio St. job, and I see Turner Gill is the new HC of the Bulls.  Hopefully it will lead to better play since they'll hopefully use the money to upgrade the program.

I feel sorry for the players though........there's nothing quite like getting pounded so badly that the other team's freshmen are in the game by the third quarter.

    690668

Losing is nothing new to the UB Bulls. They were getting reamed 48-0 by MAC teams.

Franlky, it's a good strategy. The Bulls will make over $1mil in payments. That money will go to improve the program. And after playing Auburn, BC, and Wisconsin, how tough will Ball State look?

If you noticed, Turner Gill has been bringing in the beef to UB, including Jim Kelly's nephew (an OT.) They also signed a great QB prospect from WNY (Naaman Roosevelt.) I think the Bulls will be pretty good in 2-3 years.

If the basketball team can keep succeeding, and the football team improves, could UB be a candidate for the Big East someday?

  7. Former Rochester Amerk Jason Pominville with the OT goal!

We Rochesterians join you in celebration!

You ought to call Bob Matthews and ask for his prediction for the nest series. He's 0-2 so far. God, what a pessimist that guy is!

  8. Colorado came with their A games

Bandettes came with their A games even short 3 dancers

fans came with their A games...over 16000 in attendance

Bandits came with their D games..they sucked

refs came with their D games...they sucked as well

    691091

That's their third loss in the finals in a row. Playing up to that lofty Buffalo sports team standard! At least they won one.

Frankly I'm impressed that 16,000 showed up for the game when the Sabres played at the same time. Maybe they had the Sabres game on the Jumbotron.

  9. NHL ratings get less than a 1 in the USA. Playoff ratings get the same. I don't see why the NHL would care who is in the Finals. The ratings in the local TV markets in Buffalo, Carolina, San Jose, Anaheim, Edmonton would be insane. Other hockey cities will get decent ratings. Nobody else cares.

Anyways, I thought the refs were paid by the CBC, not NBC.

    689524

How many households is OLN even available in? I think the future of the NHL is webcasting and Center Ice. Price it right and the fans will pony up the dough. In fact the NHL can tell NBC to go pound sand. The NHL will be the first direct-to-the-consumer sports league!

  10. That theory is actually an old one, called the "Oscillating Universe," and it was pretty much tossed out the window when it was discovered that the universe is expanding at an increasing rate. (The oscillating theory suggested that expansion would slow, and then contract, resulting in another big bang, kind of like a paddleball.)

The latest theory I had heard is this universe is but one of an endless number of emerging universes coming out of one of the 7 other physical dimensions that we cannot see, but are inferred by mathimatical formula. Apparently forces in these extra dimensions collide, causing new universes to bubble forth. Since these collisions are not smooth and uniform, they result in an uneven distribution of energy and matter, that eventually bring form to galaxies, stars, and planets. They may also act like a cosmic slot machine, creating a different set of physical laws in each new universe.

As Mr. Spock used to say....facinating.

  11. Since Jauron coached in Detroit last year and did not burn any bridges when he left, it is pretty likely he had some reliable inside info that Detroit would take the 2 DBs before Sims.

Or that the Rams would take Whitner since they did in fact take a DB with their 1st pick.

However, let's assume that Marv should have taken the risk. -so he makes the trade to #15 and Whitner, Ngata and Bunkley are all gone.

What do the Bills do at #15?

The Bills have moved into the twilight zone where the top 13 impact players are gone.

No one rated in this area can be counted on to provide immediate help.

    What's the plan????

It's not the job of writers like King to offer a plan...just criticism.

  12. Am I reading this correctly??

"The Broncos would have sent second- and fourth-round picks to move from No. 15 to No. 8."

Does this mean the Bills would get Denver's 1st, 2nd, and 4th? Or just the 2nd and 4th for Buffalo's 1st? If it's the latter, then Levy would had to be brain dead to take that deal.
