1. I won't be specific because I don't want to point fingers. I live in an area with an AHL team. A neighbor had a party and several players from that team, who live in this area year round, stopped by. All are very nice, by the way.

We were having a few beers, talking to them. "You guys still practice in the off-season?" "No, haven't put the skates on once." "Have you been watching the playoffs?" "No, when hockey season ends, we want to get as far from it as possible." (Asked the guy with some NHL experience) "So are you going to be with the parent club next year?" "Not sure, lots of changes in the front office. Could wind up anywhere...just as long as it's not Columbus or BUFFALO!"

I never got to ask him what his problem with Buffalo was. Whatever it is, I wonder how many potential FA's in any sport have a "anywhere but Buffalo" mentallity?

  2. I've been hearing a LOT of talk about San Diego, Jacksonville, and New Orleans relocating to L.A..  Yesterday, there was a report in the S.F. Chronicle stating that Eddie DeBartolo and Carmen Policy want to buy a current team, and their object of desire is the Raiders. Article here.  I've neard nothing about the Bills moving.

It's starting to appear that the Bills are not even an appleaing option for a L.A. team.  There has been absolutely no mention of the Bills in regards to the NFL and L.A.

    697806

I guess they want a team in L.A. to win right away. (so the very short attention span of Angelinos doesn't move on to the next shiny object) Short of fixing the games, they would rather place a franchiseon the cusp of breaking out.

  3. No way the NFL moved New Orleans now...it would be a PR NIGHTMARE.....

    697299

...that everyone would get over in about 10 minutes. The New Orleans area lost 70% of it's population! It makes Buffalo look like a boom town. The city is still a disaster area. Pro sports franchises are about the least important thing right now. The NFL is saying all the right things but don't kid yourself. The Saints are on a VERY short list of relocating franchises.

If the NFL is serious about two teams for L.A., the Chargers could easily be that second team. And you know, any real Charger fan would still follow the team. They's still be SoCal's football team.

If Buffalo has anything going for it, it's politicians who definitely have the NFL's ear. Look at the firestorm Ralph was able to set off with a few press conferences!

The NFL, and the NBA, will keep New Orleans in the loop for Super Bowls and All-Star games. Those events are more important to the city than keeping the Saints afloat (no pun intended.)

As for John Clayton, when was the last time he said anything that turned out to be true?

  4. The other question that didnt get asked is, "Ralph, you do know that your TV rights you're going to get exceeds the new salary cap rise by tens of millions this year alone, don't you?"

    696911

Well that's a terrific question that no one has bothered to investigate. Take what Ralph said about rising cap, see what Buffalo's projected revenues are, and calculate if the curve ever dips into the red. It's not rocket science. I believe we have enough data to make an educated guess.

  5. All the press that Ralph Wilson has received, pro or con, is an interesting study of "spin." The truth is never simple. You can make a story go anyway you want, just by asking the right questions.

Take the recent Ch.2 story for instance:

    http://www.wgrz.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=38205

The reporter asks: "Is Ralph Wilson losing money?" The guest answers no.

"How much money are the Bills making now?" Answer: about $36mil a year.

"How like are the Bills to move in the next few years?" Not likely.

Now we're all set up to think that Ralph is crying wolf. That this whole mess is in his imagination.

But what question DIDN'T get asked? "Are the Bills still profitable when the salary cap goes up $10mil? $20mil? $40mil?" I hear what Ralph is saying. I can't believe no one else gets it.

He's saying the Bills are okay now, but not down the road if things don't get fixed. It's like Ralph asking to have a sprinkler system installed in a building, but everyone says "Why? I don't see a fire!" Ralph wants to keep the Bills safe before the fire rages out of control.

But sometimes facts get in the way of a good story.

  6. I don't know about the Stanly Cup.  But it would be great if they win the Stanley Cup.

    695823

The Stanley Cup is the only major sports trophy that bears the name of every player of every team that won it. There is nothing like it in sport. When you raise it over your head, you raise ever player who won it before you.

You can talk about the ring, but the Stanley Cup makes you immortal. That's heavy!

That's a link to a WKBW news video of how Buffalo's 97 Rock (the voice of the Bills) is recording a new version of "We're Gonna Win That Cup" featuring local celebs like Joe Mesi, Mayor Brown, the Ch.7 anchors, etc.

While ex-Bill (and apparently STILL a Buffalo resident) Rueben Brown is featured, as far as I can tell, no active Bills players or staff are on the song.

I find that curious that the voice of the Bills couldn't get one current member of the team to join a tribute to the Sabres. Am I reading too much into this?

    Your thoughts?

  8. I'm pretty sure the 1st time I read the article there was no Postscript about Nall.  My guess is somebody wrote or called the guy and told him that it's a three way battle & Nall is on the roster and he covered his tracks with an update.

I consider him an idiot because his original article indicates he didn't even know the roster and the QBs who are involved in the competition for the starting job. The fact that he added something so that it appears he knew all along that Nall is on the roster diminishes my (low) opinion of him even more.

    694972

Definitely a C.Y.A. move. There was no mention of Nall in that article...none.

  9. How can you write for a major publication and not know the Bills signed Craig Nall to compete for the starters job? Just goes to show you that most of these writers never follow the teams they write about. They just repeat what they see on ESPN.com

  10. Here's what to do:

Make Willis the centerpiece of the offense.

Give him the ball 30-40 times a game.

    Blow smoke up hs rump

Start looking for his replacement so we're ready when he declares he wants $20mil a year.

  11. Considering the majority of the people getting to take advantage of this deal are ones who put the 30% down on seasons tickets for next year. It is a great buisness deal by TG to get the most season ticket sales for next season.

It just sucks that the fans without season tickets get screwed over for paying the full price for the playoff tickets, and if they want to go now, they will have to mortgage everything they own to get scalper tickets

    693599

Incorrectomundo...Only those who bought full-seasons at the start of 2005-2006 are paying the "value" price on playoff tickets. Those ponying up the 30% deposit still pay full boat. ($100-$200) They just get playoff tix guarenteed.

Again, a team should reward it's season ticket holders. I know some folks can't afford them. but that's why the games are on TV. Pro sports, at least in the last 25 years, are a luxury, not a right. My family couldn't afford to buy Bills football tickets in the 70's, and what did they cost then? $6?

  12. Take the family to Rick's Tallyhoes and then down  the picturesque Genesee Street. There is a lovely Mcdonalds at Genesee and Bailey. Friday night is half off  a round of bullets night.

    694138

Speaking of Rick's Tally-Ho, Salvatore's Italian Gardens are just around the corner. If you love crushed red velvet and pissing cherubs with your Fettucini Alfredo, the family will love it! Did I mention the velvet?
