1. If you choose to answer, I'd like to hear some logical support for your position.

#1 -- Does anyone in his or her right mind think it would have been acceptable to start the season with either Coy Wire or Matt Bowen as our starting SS?

#2 -- Does anyone believe that Troy Vincent is the answer at FS for any longer than perhaps one year (if at all)?

#3 -- If I admit that the Buffalo OL underperformed last season, may I also reasonably suggest that the primary weakness was NOT at the two tackle positions?

#4 -- Do the pre-draft signings of Fowler (replacing Teague) and Reyes (replacing either Anderson or Villarial) present the POSSIBILITY of upgrading the prime area of weakness on the Buffalo OL?

#5 -- Do any of the Bills' draft picks fail to address a clear area of need on the roster?

#6 -- Did the Bills "waste" any draft picks on a curiosity (Parrish) or long-term project (McGahee) at the expense of immediate needs?

    681675

1 - No doubt we needed a SS and Whitner is the man. Expect growing pains this year but he should be an excellent SS for years to come.

2 - Vincent is done. R. Baker looked promissing at times. Ko Simpson has ALOT to learn but could be an excellent player ... next year.

3 - The primary weakness was indeed the interior but lets face it the tackles are not strong either. Maybe Peters will continue to develop into a solid player. I would have loved to see Justice drafted at 26 and gamble that McCargo is there at 42. I admit, I know less than Marv and Modrak. They made sure thay got there man (McCargo).

4 - Fowler and Reyes should be an upgrade. If anything, at least we know that under Marv's management style, McNally had some input on them.

5 - All picks indeed address need. Our problem is we have more needs than quality picks. My only issue is that we did not get a top OL prospect, instead we have a few developmental projects.

6 - We are so weak it almost impossible to waste a pick. For our current roster, using a day one pick on WR, LB and QB would have been questionable, but taking good players is smarter than drafting by postion.

Overall I think the draft went well. I understand the logic behind the picks and the draft complemented the moves made in free agency.

It looks to me like Marv has a plan.

  2. While we're at it, let's ban Fred Smerlas from visiting Buffalo too.  He's spent the last three days on WEEI telling everyone that the Bills "are stupid" for not drafting Leinart, and that a loser city deserves a loser football team.

I swear I will bring a crowbar to RWS and personally pry his name of the Wall of Fame.  He doesn't deserve to be honored by the Bills.

    PTR

    681660

Agreed. Smerlas somehow considers himself to be a Patriot. He is an idiot.

  3. It's got to be Clutch McCargo, there is simply no way around that one.

    681628

Agreed, Berman will be all over Clutch McCargo and Ashton "Shake your" Booty.

He might even had tried Ko "Jay" Simpson but that is taboo today. To the national media, OJ never existed.

  4. You can't tell me there weren't any trade discussions at # 8! Worst case you trade after  we pick ML probably to arizona. I feel we got caught with our pants down. I believe we thought Da brick was going to be there and if not then mike huff! Then all the war room paniked! Though this may work out in the long run I just feel like we missed a opportunity to get more value picks!  In final What do you think TD does in the same sit?

    676904

HELLO, Hello, hello .... is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone home?

  5. a LB, OT, and RB.  I may be in the minority, but I like Marv's choices.

    676771

Concur. I am so tired of the "we could have traded down and still picked these guys" comments. Amazing how much scouting and GM talent there is in the WNY area.

Whitner should start, McCargo will be heavily involved in the DT rotation (both are juniors by the way), and Youbotny could be nickel or dime back. I can see all 3 starting in the future.

  6. There's 100 people viewing this board that could have gotten both McCargo and Whitworth/Whitburn/Whitface/Whitever, and STILL had our #42 and #73 in the pocket. You trade down, take the 2nd, use the extra 2nd on McCargo. This isn't !@#$ing rocket science.

This draft is going to make us pine for 2000 by the time it's done.

    675489

Yes, it would have been soooo easy to trade our 1st down 5 or 7 slots and get another second .... right.

And McCargo would have been there in the second because you say so.

    Get a life.

  7. ... that is mostly because I am conditioned by all of the mock drafts and projections. I expected either Huff, or Ngata, or a trade down and then either Ngata, Bunkley or Justice.

DTs and OTs tend to be highly coveted positions and we need both. We also need a safety. They must really like Whitner. It all comes down to who the Bills think thay can get in rounds 2 and 3. There must be a DT and an OT targeted later in the draft that they like as much as Ngata/Bunkley or Justice? Could be that this is not true at safety.

All I know is that I really wanted to see the trenches adressed with the top picks. I think that give us the best odds to add talent to those positions.

I am a bit surprised by the pick of Whitner but lets give the kid a chance.

  8. I applaud Ralph, too.  But I'm not willing to say he did this based on "principled leadership."  He was just standing up for his individual rights/economic benefit...nothing more.

    668189

Wrong. He is trying to preserve something from the past. Something that was good about the NFL and is now threatened. Ralph could make tons of money by selling the team. He is more interested in his legacy.

I am very surprised that Lamar Hunt in KC and Al Davis in Oakland have not come to Ralph defense, at least for moral support.

  9. I don't know why.  I'm a big Marv fan, as I've said, I think getting rid of Donahoe - his ego, his decision-making, and his abrasive management style - has to be a net gain for the organization.

That said, I'm all of a sudden freaking out about draft weekend.  For no good reason that I can pinpoint, I'm now convinced that the Bills are going to do something stupid and unexpected on Saturday, like trading down a few picks and then taking Cutler.  I dunno why, I just get this eerie feeling that, come Monday, the Bills will be the absolute laughingstock of the League for a piss-poor draft performance.  Again, I have NO GOOD REASON, NOR ANY GOOD SENSE.  I know I need to shake this feeling, but I can't.  Anyone else having similar premonitions?  If not, care to talk me off the ledge?

    668804

So what if the Bill drop a few slots and pick Cutler? They can still address OT and DT in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and the extra pick(s) may be a good thing. What if Cutler becomes a pro bowl QB? The draft day grades rarely have anything to reality.

Hang tight and enjoy the event.

  10. Those years ended bitterly, because Wilson treated Butler like a third world indentured servant.  McBride's analogy to Monty Burns is perfectly appropriate.  To think otherwise is revising history.

TD may have dug his own grave, but that has nothing to do with Wilson's mistseps with Polian, Butler, and obviously retrospectively missing out on AJ Smith.  If people here cry over the missed Mike Williams draft choice, there should be equal noise made over letting AJ Smith run off to SD.

    665409

Good point on AJ but he lacked GM experience and he was going to stick with Butler anyway.

One of Ralph's issues with Butler was that Butler did not handle contracts and the business side of the job. AJ would have had those same issues. Butler may have been lower paid but prior to the escalation in front office salaries, Ralph was paying multple people to do the job that some GMs were doing by themselves.

Other issues with Ralph and Butler leaving were:

    1 - the handling of Wade;

    2 - Butler's cap mess and reluctance to purge veterans to get the cap under control;

3 - Flutie-Johnson related decisions (lots of stories about meddling here).

Ralph paid TD bigger dollars but gave him much more responsibility. TD failed on his own. TD was drunk with power and that lead to some bad decisions. Ralph was correct to end TD's regime.

  11. Dick Jauron hasn't coached a single down for us. Marv hasn't completed a single offseason and you're all dumping on him. So I'm wondering

HOW MANY GAMES DO WE HAVE TO WIN IN ORDER FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO LOG ON HERE AND NOT HAVE EVERYONE SCREAMING FOR BLOOD?

    664157

I think that you cannot really evaluate them until after the 3rd season, by then we should be a playoff team on the rise. The development and emergence of a good QB will be the key factor.

  12. 1. Last year, Nate was toasted many times.

    2. The Bills are in the middle of a 3-4 year rebuilding.

    3. Rebuilding is best done through the draft.

    4. The better the draft pick number, the better the players drafted (generally).

    5. Therefore, trade Nate for more draft picks.

What's the best case scenario if he stays? He has 3 good years during a rebuilding period. I say send him packing.

    661116

I disagree. We need to keep good players that are in their prime. Nate is that. His prime years fall into the 3-4 year time frame you suggested.

Yes, he had an off year but so did the alot of people last year. He is still better than most CB's in the league.

I think Nate is a top corner and should be paid fair market value. The Bills need to do this to show that they are willing to pay and keep their best players. Fair market today for a CB is less than it was a few years ago. Lets sign him and take advantage of that good timimg.

Drafting a rookie, even in the first round, does garauntee that we get a better player.

  13. I completly agree and was happy to see the warm weather teams come to our stadium in the 2nd half of the season. Felser is wrong.

    663147

Felser's underlying point is that we may get off to a slow start with a new staff in place. If we stuggle early and fall behind in the standings then we may indeed have a tough time selling tickets later in the season.

Marv and Co need to field a competitive product.

  14. ...the Less It Matters.

If our choice at #8 is

7 Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland Jr, 6-3, 250

    8  Michael Huff, S, Texas Sr, 6-1, 205

9  Haloti Ngata, DT, Oregon Jr, 6-5, 338

10  Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt Sr, 6-4, 225

11  Winston Justice, OT, USC Jr, 6-6, 300

12  Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Florida St. Sr, 6-3, 308

13  Jimmy Williams, CB, Virginia Tech Sr, 6-3, 205

or even a trade down for more picks, that's a wonderful decision to have to make. Any of these players are going to help this football team for different reasons. It's fun to project how each would play out, and I while I would love to be in the Bills War Room, I wouldn't want to make the decision--but I still think my Dad was right. The Harder a Decision Is...the Less It Matters.

    663079

Well, in this case, the decision is which one of seven oustanding players do I take ... I would agree.

However, if the decison involves something truely important, like going to war or voting on key legislation, I would say that Daddy oversimplified things a bit.

  15. If Ferguson some how falls to # 8 we keep the pick but thats probably not going to happen. So the best case scenerio would be for the Bills to trade with Minny for their 1st round pick (#17) and their 2nd round pick (#48) so they can take Cutler who people say Brad Childress want badly and could see him fighting with Brad Johnson for the starting position right away. That leaves us picking at 17 where Winston Justice will be available. Every mock Ive looked at has him going somewhere between 16-20. He is the 2nd best o-lineman in the draft and comes from a winning tradition where he started since his freshman year.

    662719

    Yoyr looking at old mocks.

If you drop to 17 Justice will be gone, Ngata will be gone, Bunkley will be gone and Huff will be long gone. The extra 2nd rounder will be nice but we will not find a rookie to start at LT or DT for this season.

If you want Justice you might be able to drop to 12. We shall see.

  16. Was the addition of Melvin Flowler enough to improve our offensive line?

    661745

The draft is the key. Both guard positions are worrisome. There are 2 or 3 OG's in the draft that will push to start on our team right now. If we can land Reyes that will improve the line and Preston may develop.

Fowler should be an upgrade over Teague.

Gandy at LT is just adequate. We will draft his replacement somewhere in the first 3 rounds but its doubtful a rookie will start the season at LT (assuming Brick is not there at 8; Justice may be able to start as a rookie?).

To upgrade the talent on OL, we should draft two offensive lineman on day 1 of the draft.

  17. IIRC, Byron Franklin was traded straight up for Pete Metzelaars, who was a big part of the offense in the late 80s-early 90s.

Riddick made a little contribution for the Bills - if nothing else, he made the Bills draft TT.

    661673

That was a crappy draft. Franklin was a decent WR on a crappy team. Riddick was a good backup RB. He was especially good in short yardage where he had the ability to leap over the line of scrimage and get the needed yardage. His career was cut short by injury or he would have backed up TT longer.

  18. I think it's entirely possible that the Bills will get the #1 player at 3 positions in this draft.

To do that, you take Ngata DT, or Michael Huff SS in RD#1. Both very doable at #8, and both upgrade our defense now. Right now I'd choose Huff but would have ngata problem with Ngata. (I'm assuming Hawk is gone)

You take Spencer OG, Jason Allen FS or D'Qwell Jackson MLB in RD#2. Spencer is the obvious choice to start right now, and Allen second, who'd be a #1 pick if not for his injury at Tennessee. But London may need more than Crowell waiting in the wings. I'd choose Spencer if he's still around at our pick (I'm assuming Mangold is gone).

You take Matt Bernstein FB in Round #4 (many drafts even project him in RD#5 because fewer teams use the 2-back set). Here's a chance to grab a solid FB. Sorry I'm not sold on Goldsberry as heir apparent to Shelton.

Heck, take Virginia's Connor Hughes and get the #1 kicker in Round 6.

    ------

I know, let the draft come to me. Well, this is too much fun!

    654628

    My take:

1- Who knows if Ngata is better than Bunkley or anybody else?

2 - Spencer is NOT the the best OG in the draft according to many "experts"

3 - Allen may not be there in Round 2, and isn't Huff the better prospect?

4 - Bernstein is considered a reach at 4; I doubt a rookie will start, even as a FB.

  19. Maybe if we sign Reyes we can cut Bennie Anderson's fat ass.  If we were to sign him that would create a lot of competition in the interior of our O-line....thats a good thing.  Not to mention were probably going to add some more bodies in the draft.

    659400

True but lets not cut Bennie until some one better beats him put.

  20. How about Bills fans stop blaming everyone else like the large market owners and the local politicians and look to yourself.  :o

Other teams are getting two to three times more for tickets then what Bills fans pay.

    Try this on. :o

If you want a major league sport? Be willing to pay major league prices for it.  :P

    659498

    Are you for real? :P:P
