1. Holding a 10 point lead against the Patriots is not going to guarantee you a win, even a 13 point lead is still not a guarantee. They took a chance (and if they would have made it, everyone would be talking about how it was great) and it didn't work out. They still kept up with a very good team, and only lost by 2 points. Yet typical of Buffalo fans, they have to find a problem with something that should be positive

I am not sure I am typical of Bills fans. I do know that we win 20-19 with those points.

I would take a 13 point lead and the momentum.

  2. You know what would have showed a lot of confidence?  If on 4th and one, JP just kneeled down.  We don't need any points.  We were playing one of the best teams in football, on the road, with a penchant for late-game heroics.  You gotta go for the knockout if you have any faith in your running game, your offensive line, and your defense.

    768786

Given the benefit of hindsight three points WAS the knockout.

    I take the 3 points.

  3. You didn't know it was 4th and one ? You thought it was 3rd and one ?

Why say it out loud and ruin my day. I thought it was the little things that got the Bills beat. That is a pretty big one.

You had two hours to figure out something to say, but that dribbles out.

The worst part of it is that it should not have mattered.

All that rhetoric he spouted this past week about playing hard ... hmmm :D

  4. My seats were in the end zone, so I can't give a lot of player evaluations since those of you watching on TV got better angles to view the plays with.

    1) Gillette Stadium is a really nice facility. Very clean, good sight lines, but there was a tremondous traffic jam of people waiting to get in which I've never seen at the Ralph. Most expensive tickets in the nation, and 2 Coors Lights cost 15 bucks!

    2) Patriots fans are pathetic, as we already knew. They were booing halfway through the first quarter and all through the second. This was the tamest end zone I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot of stadiums.

    3) Whether you agree with going for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking the field goal or not, there is no question at all that at that moment, it was the turning point in the game. You could feel it in the stadium, if that makes any sense.

    4) The refs didn't lose this game for us, we were just outplayed when the chips were down in the trenches. The Pats sucked it up and got the hard yards on the ground and Buffalo's lines folded.

    5) Whitner and Ko Simpson can play. Moorman sucked, but the guy is allowed a bad game every now and then.

    6) Seeing a B2 stealth bomber fly low right over your head puts chills down your spine.

    7) The best halftime show I've ever seen. About 50 fresh NE national guardsmen taking their pledge to serve the country. That was classy.

If you told me we'd be into the 4th quarter with 9 minutes to play tied at 17 (before the game) I would have taken that in a heartbeat.

I'm encouraged by what I saw but disappointed in the results.

    Good post.

  5. You guys have to be kidding me...

Dick Jauron was trying to teach a young team, that no one thinks can win, how to stick the dagger into the heart of an opponent  (one we were supposed to have NO CHANCE of beating) on the ground.  If it would have worked, it would have been brilliant.

It did turn the tide; we had our chances to make it up, but Special Teams cost us a game (did I just say that?).

    767558

    ??? :D

  6. I expect to get a lot of grief but I believe that this is yet another game that we let get away. I am not just talking about the failed 4th and 1 attempt, there were lots of "non plays" in the second half.

As for the 4th and 1 call --- DJ took a big gamble when just taking the points would have been enough. I am talking about precious points on the road. The Pats were reeling. There was no reason to "go for the jugular". I think you show confidence by taking those hard earned points and sending an inspired defense out there to get you the ball back. Even the old high octane Bills of the 90's would have taken 3. This was a call that resonated this message ... "we better get all the points we can, before we blow it". Guess what? They blew it anyway.

Clements penalty on the Whitner interception is typical of the mistakes that plague this team. I don't know if the call was fair or not but I expect more from Clements.

The worse part of the game was the second half collapse of both the OL and the DL. Especially the OL.

There is no moral victory. The only way to turn this around is to win.

  7. BELICHICK used fast freddy just to get info on the Bills then cut him <24 before game time. what a jerk!!!!!!!!!!!

    766041

Unbelievable! I figured that Freddy would not know much about the actual game plan to provide any help but he could at least have tied certain plays and tendencies to the different formations.

Bellichek was quoted as saying they were trying to get Freddy ready to play and that he had much to learn. Hmmm.

  8. That's basically the point of every game, so I guess I agree?

    764208

That is not the point of the game, it is the recipe for success in the NFL.

Winning the coin toss means nothing if you do not do these things. Last year we won the coin toss an unbelievable amount of times .... it is practically meaningless over the course 16 games.

  9. I can't WAIT to see how Mike blows up the Miami game tonight, it'll be an awesome sight.

    Anyways.

There are 3 things that have to happen almost in a row to have success this weekend.

    1. Win the toss. Elect to kick.  Therefore we get the ball at half to start off the end, and you DO NOT want the Patriots to be on Defense while the crowd is blowing up after kick-off.

    2. Turnovers. Send Angelo in on pass plays to make Brady fear for his life, and have the Clemegeeboty take care of the rest.  A big turnover silences the crowd, swings momentum in a HUGE way to us.

    3. Score Early, Score often.  It's obvious, but I'm not talking about touchdown, touchdown, touchdown, I'm saying a touchdown and some quick field goals to get under Belicheks skin.

It's going to be tough, we probably won't win, but seeing the heart this city and this team puts in to the game I'm praying they reap their rewards.

    763955

    Try this:

1 - Run the ball and stop the run.

2 - force turnovers, do not turn it over ourselves

3 - limit penalties, play smart

4 - play inspired special teams

  10. Run a conventional 4 - 3 - 4 against Brady. He's good at mis-matches...don't play games. Don't think Weis leaving is a blow - plenty of staff watched his offense and learned.

Looks like Dillon will get the carries. Dillon makes his living off of Guard and Center play.

On offense, run the ball to the left against NE with a motion man heading right.

    762487

Darn. What if Bellichek reads this and learns the secret plan?

  11. I'll never understand what happened to Costas.

I used to really dig him because he was a down-to-earth sportscaster whose love of sports carried him.

Now? He's a...how would you say...caricature of himself.

    762322

Part of his early charm is that he came off as a guy like the rest of us. Someone who likes sports and give us the straight scoop.

After years of celebrity status his ego has taken over a bit. He tries to funny and he tries to be hip. IMO he lost the innocence that worked for him in the early days.

  12. There has to be a time when you say enough is enough!! The Patriots still getting favored by at least 8 points! I know the Bills have not proved anything yet but people around these parts have to think that the Bills can pull this off.

Isn't time to put this whole Patriots cloak of invincibility behind us? The Bills are due and it looks like everything they could wish for is in place for week one. Huge underdogs, away, Patriots opener, more Patriots injuries...I am no longer looking at this game with guarded optimism, I am looking for a freakin' victory and nothing less.

It's time to knock this monkey (i mean gorilla) off the Bills backs and never look behind.  I guess I am just shocked as to how the Pats keep pulling things out of thin air. Can Brady and Coach B really carry the load again???? I think not!

    762032

If we avoid stupid penalties and negative plays we have a chance. ;)

The game will be won or lost in the trenches. It does not matter so much as to who is carrying or recieving the ball. If Brady has time he will make the completions. If their RB has a big hole he will gain yards. If our OL does not match up and control the line of scrimmage our defense will be on the field for too long and bad things will happen.

I think we have a good chance but don't think that the injuries alone are that going to stop the Pats.

  13. Apparently our new OLineman is on top of the world having been issued his old #79. I pointed out that the number had been kind to a previous Bill's lineman ;-)

His Parents and Godparents are joining our group of Bill's fans for the opener in Santa Monica at 3110 Santa Monica Blvd (Busbys). They'll be among other Bill's player's family members watching the game with us. PM me for more info-

Didn't they used to live next to OJ in East Amherst?

  14. When I saw that Aaron Gibson was cut a few weeks ago I thought to myself, good this regime is not like the old one in that they want the best players and not their friends.

I think the charge of croneyism against TD was justified based on his record and the number of people he brought into the organization with Pittsburgh ties. Mularkey, Richard Huntely, Kris Farris and Tom Modrak.

I am wondering if anyone thinks that keeping Anthony Thomas over Lionel Gates was a case of croneyism? Thomas was great his rookie season, but hasn't done much in the league since. Gates averaged 2.7 yards per carry in the preseason and Thomas only 2.1. I know neither average is impressive, but I defienetly thought Gates was better in the preseason. I should add I never made it to training camp, but did see a fair amount of Bills coverage on the NFL network.

So is keeping the A-Train a case of croneyism?

    761872

Thomas a proven NFL veteran and is easily the better player. Preseason stats mean nothing. Gates cannot block and he has hands of stone. He had ZERO touches last year with only Shaud Williams ahead of him on the depth chart.

Jauron is comfortable with A-Train and their good relationship could coax another good season out of him. So what is wrong with that? It is not like he cut a future starter to keep a friend. Gates is a 3rd stringer with limited skills.

  15. Why would a player decline a practice squad position?

    761910

Seems unlikely but it happens. They do it when they get multiple offers or when they believe they can go to a team where they feel they have a better opportunity.

I am amazed that the Bills did not add any offensive linemen to the PS yet. I still think they may pick up a veteran OT and move Merz to the PS.

  16. Oh I see ... well thanks for the no-betting advice but we would never bet more than we could afford and because 3 of us are splitting one bet its only about $33 a piece.

    761816

I guess almost every young guy has to give this a try ... just remember that

gambling is a losing proposition. The ONLY people who consistently make money are the casinos and the bookies. That is why they do it.

Please set aside what you "plan to lose" and after you lose it then stop betting.

    good luck :(

  17. Just like Milloy departed the Pats to join the Bills right before the first regular season game with full knowledge of the Patriots' playbook, Fast Freddie may provide the Patriots with a similar advantage this week.

    761237

    No way.

Are you comparing a Pro Bowl veteran (Milloy) to a marginal 6th WR/ST player (Smith) that was still trying to learn a new offense? :w00t:

Bellichek does not need Smith to come up with a game plan. :w00t:

  18. Well Peter, we must have lived very close to each other because I lived around the corner from OJ on Brandywine. I will second what you said about O.J. being generous with his time. He was always good to the neighborhood kids.

    760654

He couldn't have lived on Brandywine. He lived in my nieghborhood on the West Side. Yeah, right down on West Ave. :w00t:

  19. When Jerry Angelo took over the Bears, Jauron was in essentially the same position. Did he quit ? Nope, went 13 and 3.

We have a guy who can handle the tough assignment. Mullarkey retired to Florida.

    760635

True. I work with lots of Bears fans and they respect Jauron a lot for that.

His players are loyal to him. He is intelligent, honest, and extremely organized. His downfall in Chicago was his inability to get a decent OC. Hopefully, with Fairchild, that is not going to be a problem.

Many feel that Levy wanted Jauron all along. I think the Sherman thing was a fantasy conjured up by the press. Funny how few interviews Sherman even had.

  20. First, I think Coy Wire was mostly kept because Matt Bowen is hurt now and they really don't know if he will be out one more day or ten or perhaps much more.

But second, this is another possibility. If Clements or McGee goes down, I think they move Vincent to CB and put Simpson in there at FS. When he returns, Bowen could back up FS, too, if necessary as he has some wheels. Then they could keep Jabari as the nickel back which he is much better suited for at this point, IMO. With Youboty and Greer being young, I also really think they wanted some experience like Thomas brings, as opposed to all three back-up CBs being inexperienced. We have already seen them play Vincent at CB in camp in the nickel and dime packages. It's just a theory but I think it's a real possibility or fallback plan.

    760528

    Two simple reasons:

    1 - Bowen is hurt.

2 - He excels at Special Teams.
