1. I am wrong to be concerned about him coming from a dome team to game planning eight games in the Ralph?

I would be grateful for any info that would ease my concerns.

    645015

He coached in Buffalo under Gregg. He is not a "dome" coach any more than he is an outdoor coach.

While in St. Louis he did a good job with the QBs and the offense. Fairchild tried to balance the offense, run the ball, and keep Bulger alive. Mad Man Martz intervened and took over playcalling, he was always involved with the offense to the point were he ignored the rest of the team, especially special teams. Martz liked Fairchild and mentored. That said, when Martz cracked up, Fairchild took over and did indeed balance the offense. His philosphy is ball control first, then hit you with deep speed.

I think Fairchild is a bright guy. That has been recognized by many in the NFL. Give him some time. He is starting with no QB, and a suspect OL.

  2. Funny, but I didn't think that was going to be your conclusion.  I liked Sam, when he was on - he was on; but he drove me crazy b/c he just didn't seem to work that hard most games.  In the end, this new defense appears to rely on quick responses and assignments; that is, multi-dementional .  That didn't seem to be Sam's forte, instead it was line up, get to the QB and let other people worry about the run and other assignments.

Moreover, Sam was making a lot of money and aging.  Even if he played for less money I just didn't seem him around for the following season.

That's why I thought you were going to say we should get Brodrick Bunkley.  Granted he's not a proven player like Sam, but he'll be much cheaper, younger and possibly much better than Sam would be by 2007.

    644573

Concur ... Sam played last year and our run D was horrible. He does not bring it everyday and without Phat Pat he suffered greatly. I do not see other teams lining up to sign him either. That said, he is a talent, and he will be signed by someone eventually.

I find the article in the todays News to be a bit misleading ... How does anybody know what kind of player Ngata can be in this defense?

  3. Look for the Bills to monitor cuts after June 1, where there has been a growing trend of available quality veterans cut just before the season. I believe Marv is and does need to be careful with the salary cap and the infusion of additional personnel. A big difference maker here will be how on top of the situation of other teams' structures he is aware of. Have you noticed how quickly he moved on a few chosen FAs? Some even appear that we paid too much for. I think that he has a very deliberate plan intact and that players like Royal and Tripplett are key components. We stand in a very good position in the early rounds of this year's draft. Here we will obtain some major building blocks. Once we conclude our selections in the draft, then it wouldn't be surprising to see Marv move rapidly after the June 1st cuts are made on aquiring a few more targeted ingredients that will round out our remaining needs. I see Marv being cost effective, patient, and strategic.

So if the people who are worried right now can just back away from the edge of the cliff for about 70 days then maybe, just maybe, your stress level can be reduced.

    641901

I am not worried. I know it will take three darfts to build this team back. I don't want to hear about the new age of free agency and how quickly you can turn arround a team today. i team built for the long haul has to do it by the draft. Our team sorely lacks talent because Donhoe drafted poorly.

June 1st cuts almost never get you anything in the way of long term help. Marv never had much use for June first cuts. He basically thought the team you bring to camp is pretty much your team. I don't see that changing. However, since we are so weak on both lines, and since Marv does not like playing rookies, we just may pick up a few vets after Jun 1st. Just remember, these guys are on the scrap heap and that is no way to build for the long term.

  4. I have to think that Marv and company really preferred Wells to Neal -- and that they thought with such a lucrative offer they never dreamed that the Cardinals would seriously match it. Yes, we all know that the Cardinals had more than enough cap room to do so, but I think Marv was banking that Bidwell would be to stingy to do so. He gambled and he lost... Oh, well.

    641112

Wells has way more upside than Neal, that is why he got the offer and Neal didn't. Marv made an attempt to get the guy he wanted and he knew it has not a sure thing because Wells was an RFA.

Marv did not gamble and he did not lose anything, we are in the same postion either way. i am sure he could have got Neal if he offered more $. Nothing ventured, nothing gained

  5. Make that 4 DE's. We signed Mark Word during the offseason too.

    640887

Oh yes, Wood. He is a special project, hasn't played in a few years. We will probably draft a DE in the later rounds or get more bodies as RFA's.

DT is the area that need much work (as does the OL).

  6. While everyone is entitled to their opinion...The Jets game that I attended in person last year..Denny had 2 sacks where he fought through double teams..the guy has some talents and has developed! He is a fine rotational DE...a high character guy...Welcome back Ryan.

    640420

I concur. Denny has developed into a solid player and can fit into the rotation. We were looking at Jared Devries and I wondered about Denny. Denny has accomplished more than Devries.

Good move. We still need a run stuffer (Ngata/ Bunkley) and another DE.

  7. Wow, to some Marv can do no wrong.  The guy is blowing it by wasting his time with RFA's and we (not me but many of us) give him credit for it.

    639550

Oh yes he is "wasting time", time is "wasting" , he is "wasting so much time", he should stop "wasting time".

He is not wasting time. With the exception of Pickett, the players he is not signing are the one we are not targeting. That is the way it is. It will take time. We are too far away for the quick fix.

Funny that those great players that we let go like Denny, Adams, and Edwards are all still avaialble?

  8. Can't this at least indicate Marv can spot talent? If both clubs wnated to keep the guys we signed, and obviously they know their players better than anyone, that should say something about Marvs eye for talent, no?

    639481

Yes. Marv has an eye for talent and character. Give him adequate time to turn this roster over and good times will be back.

  9. I don't have a coaching back ground. But I'll tell you what I do have. I have as much NFL GM experience as Marv does. From what I see. The only thing Marv has that I don't which got Marv the job was Ralph's phone number.

Come on Pro-Marv guys. Bring it on baby. Instead of attacking the posts and the posters. Bring the reasons why Marv should be GM. I have yet to see one other then Ralph's friendship. You know why? There are none.

    635539

I believe that Marv filled the GM role for awhile while with Montreal in the CFL. Addiionally, he has a head coach in Div I college football so he has recruitung experience too.

Actually, Marv is more qualified as a GM that Mr. Polian was when he got his first GM job. By your own admission, he worked out OK.

  10. No apparently you have trouble with numbers.

JP currently costs us 1.6 million against the 2006 cap.  If he is cut, his cap savings is -2.3 million.  Meaning that it would cost us an additional $700,000 in cap space.  How is that an economical savings?

One more time for the slow group, Colin.

JP on the Bills costs 1.6 million against the cap.  JP cut from the Bills costs 2.3 million against the cap.  1.6 < 2.3

    635528

    Good one! :doh::lol::lol:

  11. I'll start with me first. None. Zip. Nada. Zilch. I'm sure that this doesn't come as a shock to the masses on this board. I go thru spurts with my posts. It's usually is based on how I'm feeling that particular day. The majority, if not all, of my information comes from the internet, newspaper, that damn addictive ESPN and it's scroll, idiots at work and from some of our fellow posters. Surprised? Just a gut feeling but I'm sure you're not. I'm just an armchair QB wannabe who lobs on the couch agonizing over the misfortunes of my favorite team, the Buffalo Bills. I'm ALWAYS trying to devise and conjure up any conceivable way to help to improve MY team. I'm sooo sick and tired of the last several years. I tried to see the good of what this organization and it's administers were doing. I even disagreed at times, matter of fact, I was even right once in awhile! By the way, did you ever play pin the tail on the donkey? I won that once or twice too! Even when I don't enter a post I still read this board faithfully. I'm not intending to offend anyone but I do see alot of posters like me on this board. So before we all burn Marv, Jauron and the first born of our newly aquired "depth" FAs, can we let this thing play out alittle bit before we write this season off? Thanks, I appreciate your time to read this much too honest confession.

PS. For the ones who REALLY do have the experience that I asked for in the title of this post, could you be nice enough to give your professional input? Us diehards really need to have some accurate perspective. Thanks again everybody and I hope that WE all have a very satisfying season.

    635401

I played a lot of sandlot, and litle league, right up into high school. I collected footbal cards, read football magazines, watched games with my Dad and my uncles, went to games at "The Rockpile" and at "Rich Stadium"and talked football at the barber shop. All of this training in my youth qualifies me to too know the game better than Marv, Modrak, Jauron, and the rest of the staff.

  12. I read the other thread that was posted about Marv ruining his legacy and just had to post this!

Levy had a miserable losing record as Coach of the Chiefs and was fired by Lamar Hunt because he couldn't turn the team around.  Enter the Bills with Gm Bill Polian at the helm, Polian and Levy had ties going back to the old USFL days with the Chicago Blitz and Polian decided to hire Levy because he wanted a smart coach (not necesarily a good Coach) that could steer the ship without screwing it up.  The Bills team that Levy Coached was so good that my next door neighbor (a mailman) could Coach the team.  Levy was just in the right place at the right time and was fortunate that the team was soo good that he made the "Hall" because of the teams accomplishments.  Levy is nothing more than a great talking smart salesman that stepped in a pile of sh*% at the right time.  A smart one at that.  But in the Big game (aka Super Bowl) his ability as a Coach was unmasked.  If being severely outcoached by another Coach was a felony,  then Jimmy Johnson would have been charged with two counts, Joe Gibbs with one and Bill Parcells with another.

    634823

Your really off base and so is this whole thread. What is over rated? Under rated? Properly rated?? Rated by whom?

Marv is an excellent football coach which is what he has always wanted to be. Are you excellent at what you do? If so, have your peers recognized it? Your talking about a special person in Marv.

Football is not about titles and rings, it's about achievement and accomplishment and loyalty and honor. I doubt you know about these things. Marv is great, not because he is in the HOF ... it is because he is still growing and pursuing new challenges even though he IS in the HOF.

If you can ever understand this, then you will benefit from it.

Remember this my friend ... when you step in a pile of sh@%, all you get is a dirty shoe.

  13. The Bears will have seven days to match, and with $9.6 million of cap room, they are expected to do so. The Bears aren't saying exactly what they are going to do. New Bills coach Dick Jauron has enough knowledge from his days as the Bears' coach to project how Idonije will fit into Buffalo's new defense.

So let me get this straight Clayton...The Bears are expected to match the offer, but you arent sure what they are going to do?

Does anyone at ESPN proof-read these things?

    634768

Anyone geting the idea that Marv and his staff are working very, very, hard to find value wherever they can.? Signing two RFA's is bold. We may not get either of them but Marv and Co are being creative and unconventional and I like it! I'll bet that this guy and Wells turn out to be solid players and I hope we can pull it off.

And to all the nay sayers... we already they two guys are not well known players, Pro Bowlers, or super stars.

  14. From all the previous 'pollyanna' posts your post is the most interesting. Lets break it down.

Tripplett? Didn't he get benched? He's half the size and half the player Adams is. Adams was space eater. He took up blockers. Tripplett is an undersized pass rushing wanna be.

Royal? 18 catches 131 yards. And that's when he's healthy.

Wells? Started only nine games for a team that could only average 3.2 yards a carry? Don't any of you look this stuff up?

The miracle I want is for the owner of this team not to hire his friends and hire qualified employees.

This team needs three new starters on the defensive line and need to release evey offensive lineman on the roster. This team wasn't close. They are not better then the 5-11 record they had. They were probably worse. Adding other teams garbage isn't going to make this team better.

    634419

Triplett was one of the higher rated DT in free agency. I'm surprised you don't like him simply because the many publications out there tells you to. Adams is a space eater that DOES NOT stop the run. What happen to ADAMS when Pat Williams left? He was exposed. He is a good DT when paired with great DT. He makes plays no doubt, but he takes plays off too. Tripplet is a good football player at a good price.

Royal is an excellent blocker. We did not pick him up to catch passes although he has been a red zone threat in the past. Campbell was weak, all the TEs on the roster are poor blockers. That is one reason why we have such horrible results on short yardage and red zone situations. Royal will complement Everett and adds something we need.

Wells started 14 games in his 2nd year and then the first 9 last season. He was making great strides and then broke an ankle. Many in Arizona say he was their best linemen. His loss was part of the reason their running game suffered.

    Who would you have signed?

What makes you more qualified than Marv, Modrak, and Jauron the rest of he staff?

  15. What Marv does (or dosen't) do as a GM should count towards his legacy. The early signs are that Marv is way over head in this.

He has yet to sign one player that makes this team better then they were last season. Then again, if you were a Free Agent why would you come pay for the Levy led Bills? The only players signed are those just happy to have a job.

This team was said to have Cap room. Then the Cap was increased. It appears that Marv is either unwilling (more likely unable) to do anything with it.

The saddest thing? Is that in a year and half or two years when Levy gets fired or forced to step down? We will then have a 93 year old clueless owner out there trying to hire another GM.

I hope Golisano plans on buying the Bills. Looking at what he has done with the Sabres? I think he can save this once proud franchise and save it from this downward spiral.

    634343

How do you know? What qualifies you to make these statements? What is your legacy.

Triplett is an upgrade over Edwards, Bannan, and most likely Adams too. Then he made run at Pickett. Picket was too costly for a team with so many needs.

Royal is an upgrade over Campbell, you will see. Gibbs wanted to keep him. Is he old and stupid too?

Davis could be one heck of a find if he stays healthy.

Marv just made a very creative move on an offer for Wells. This kid is a player and not even in his prime. If we don't get him we have also been talking to Neal.

He took a shot at Fabini. It didn't work, big deal

He still has cap room for a few more players. He is making lots of moves for roster depth ... all teams do that.

We still have the draft and the summer cuts. I'm betting by the end of August we have a younger and more talented roster than last years.

What miracles do you want? Quit discriminating against age. Open your mind and give the man a chance.

  16. The Sabres were picked to finish 25th.  No big names, but lots of team speed and toughness.  Maybe Marv is copying the Sabres more than the Patriots.

    PTR

    633079

Marv has a plan no doubt, but Marv is not copying anbody. He is doing what he can within the constraints he has. He is going to turn this thing around but it won't happen in just one off season.

I love the Promo gig by the way :D

  17. wait... so you dont want us to sign old vets that are stop gaps for 2 years, but then you want fabini?  :D

    632956

No that is not what I meant.

I commented on how some people are saying Fabini sucks when in fact he has had a very good career and as a starting LT. Not a pro bowler, but a good starter for many years. We don't know what is left in his tank.

Given that, and the fact that we have so many holes on the OL, I don't think that signing old vet for is best for us. We have so many needs on OL that is time to put younger players with upside in there.

I don't want Fabini AND I don't think it fair to say that he sucks either.

  18. Fabini has been starting at LT for what, 9 years? He started as a rookie under Parcells and ever since then the only way they could sit him down was due to two serious injuries last year. I can't beleive that people are saying he sucks! Lets be reasonable ... he does not suck.

Yesterday half of the board was screaming to get veterans like Fabini and Runyon in town! Today half the board considers him "someone elses garbage" and doesn't want him.

The way I see it is if we are going to build a strong line, one that will peak in the next few years, then we need 3 starters on this years line to be quality players that are going to be here for 4-5 years. That means replace Bennie, find a center, and try to replace either Gandy or Villarial. Gandy may be decent at LG, or he may be our only alternative at LT this year? I expect Peters to return and get better. One of our draft picks needs to be plugged in as a starter. Our current depth is crap, but maybe Preston is ready to start? So it would sure help if we can find a quality starter from free agency.

I am not in favor of Fabini or Runyon because we are not close enough talent wise to bother with recycling old vets to fill a hole. We need to develop people with some upside, not 2 year stop gaps. I just wonder why we are not talking to Ashworth, Neal, or some of the younger lineman?

  19. Welcome to TSW Bob.  You bring up a lot of goint points, good to see some more St. Louis Bills fans.  Your assesment of the Pickett situation is dead on.  Got any interest in starting a St. Louis Bills Backers?  There are a few of us on here from St. Louis (myself, T.C. in St. Louis, Jukester); it would be cool if we could get a Bills Backers club going in St. Louis, any interest?

    631628

Yes! I was part of the Bills Backers in St. Louis back in the 90's. We had almost 100 members with about 50 to 60 actively showing up. We used to watch the games at Ozzie Smith's, and then Damons set us up with a good deal. Once the Super Bowl years ended the gang stopped coming to the games. The Club President moved and just a few of us survived. I have been an army of one, watching the Bills at Hot Shots in St. Charles for the past several years.

  20. Apologies if already posted

Look For Levy To Put End To QB Circus

Buffalo Bills quarterback Kelly Holcomb scrambles against the Oakland Raiders, October 23, 2005. (AP Photo)

    By Pat Moran

    Date: Mar 15, 2006

If Levy could end up with Cutler he'd be idiotic to pass because we already have two. Cutler has a cannon arm every bit as strong as Losman. He also appears mentally sound and didn't have to endure what Losman went through last season, something I cast doubt on Losman mentally recovering from. Cutler has an attitude and swagger to him the Bills haven’t seen since the days of Kelly, and I'm not talking about Holcomb.

One thing is certain. Kelly Holcomb will not be the guy to take this team anywhere, unless six to eight wins is measured as a fine season.

Trust me, Marv Levy knows this. He’s not going to play the quarterback shuffle.

The three-ring circus ends on April 29 when either Cutler or Young become the ringmaster.

    631664

I agree with most of the article. If any of the big 3 are there I would not complain if we took them.

We will not win 6-8 games with any QB this year, including Tom Brady. There are just two many holes on this team to fill in one off-season. Drafting a QB at #1 robs us of an opportunity to fill a hole somewhere else.

So we play the season with a rookie and win maybe 4-6 games. This will not be good for Jauron but I think he will handle it better than Mularkey did. The QB circus has to end if we are going to ever be a contender.

  21. Losing out on Pickett is a tough blow, he would have stepped in and started and given us more options on draft day. However, from living here in Rams country I can tell you that Pickett has been inconsistent. Last year he finally made strides toward being a dominant player. Make no mistake, I wanted him to be a Bill ... but not at any cost. It would not surprise me to see him get content with his big contract. I am not against signing a stop-gap guy like Grady rather than more "2nd tier" people. Grady is proven and could be effective in a DT rotation.

I really would like to see some action on the OL. I am not a fan of bringing in aged veterans like Fabini or Runyon because I want to start developing a cohesive unit that will not change for several years. I wonder why the Bills are not interested in guys like tackle Tom Ashworth and guard Stephen Neal. Both are young and just starting to enter prime. They have plenty of starts under their belt on a championship team. Everything I have read and heard about these guys has been positive. On top of that they know something about all those NE stunts.

Any thoughts on affordable, realistic help for the OL?

  22. Bentley, shaffer and Jurevicious to help the O.

Big Ted and Willie McGhinest on the D.

If we could have only gotten that type of production from our front office.  They are going to be the team we should be.

I'm cheering for the browns secretely this year.

    T_R

    631349

Check back with me at week 12. I am a Big Ted fan but he is 39 and hasn't done much in years. I'm skeptical.

Shaffer could be an average tackle.

Jurevicious is feared by no one. Not an impact player.

Bently is a stud ... and how many impact centers have lead their team to the super bowl?

The Browns are unfortunate to be way under the cap and I think they are overpaying for every one of these guys. Wait two years when Ted and Willie go belly up and the Brownies start purging to deal with the dead cap money.
