What depth chart?  The unofficial depth chart published by the Bills media team?  Please don’t read anything into that.  As someone else previously posted the Ravens unofficial depth chart has JK Dobbins listed as their 4th RB, and we know that’s not true.  Jeez.  Relax.

Is Dobbins  a healthy scratch today?

Look, Epinesa might turn out to be a good productive DE.  I’m just saying that the fact he was made a healthy scratch given his high draft selection, the position he plays, and the player who beat him out, his career is off to a very disappointing start.

Find me another 2nd rounder who is a healthy scratch in week one?

I'm going to go with our roster is so good a 2nd rounder could not get on the field vs he sucks.  For the time being, lol

Ha!  Well this is partially true.  There are some good veteran players who’d be ahead of most rookie DE’s like Jerry, Mario, and Jefferson.  But a stronger training camp by Epinesa probably pushes Murphy off the roster and saves the Bills $7 in cap space next season

While I wouldn't expect somebody picked 54th to be a stud on the level of a perennial all pro that is still a high pick in the nfl draft. A second round pick absolutely should develop into a starter eventually if you drafted correctly

Also, a player that you drafted 54th overall should be good enough to dress on Sunday.

Why are you expecting a DE selected 54th overall to be a stud?   At that point in the draft I’d say a GM did well if that player developed into a competent starter at DE.  Also (and I already brought these things up):

    1) why would you ignore the impact of no OTAs, a shortened TC and lack of preseason games on rookies starting or being active for the first game?

    2) when was it announced that Epenesa is going to be inactive?

    3) why ignore the fact that a bunch of players at a variety of positions have been inactive or have not played early in their rookie seasons?

I am not even saying that I have high expectations for Epenesa, but it’s silly to put so much emphasis on his status for game one of his rookie season, especially when we don’t know what that status is.  With no preseason games and such a shortened offseason do you really expect a lot of rookies drafted beyond the first round to see action early?  Even in regular seasons it is rare for players taken past the early second to get much playing time.  I mean, what’s your point?  That you didn’t like the pick?  Great.  Then just say that instead of trying to make something out of nothing.

My point is, the fact that Epinesa is buried as the 4th DE on the depth chart behind a 2019 7th round pick probably isn’t a good sign.

To an extent what you say is correct, but again.... it is very rare for a second round DE to be so far down the depth chart that they are listed as a healthy scratch.  Don’t pretend that it’s common, because it isn’t.  I think it’s a bad sign but we’ll see

It just doesn’t prove anything.  If your point is that Epanesa being a healthy scratch tomorrow makes it unlikely he’ll ever be great.  That just doesn’t make sense.

So you don’t think the fact that a second round draft pick is a healthy scratch, playing behind a 7th round draft pick from the prior year isn’t a good sign?  Because I would beg to differ.  It’s very uncommon that a 2nd rounder is made a healthy scratch

You have a lot wrong here.   First off, DE is absolutely not a position rookies jump in and contribute early.  Early first rounders, sure.  Not so much after that.  Feel free to list all of the DEs that started game 1 or even contributed early in their rookie season.  I looked through last season’s first three rounds.  Not a lot there as far as games started - or even played - from DEs outside the top 10 picks (Bosa, Ferrell and the other Josh Allen).  Some mixed results even with those high picks too.

For further comparison, the 54th player selected last season was a CB, Lonnie Johnson, who played in 11 games.  I know there have been players selected at 54 and after who have come in and contributed (or even started successfully) from game one, but it’s not the norm.  You might wanna let this one play out for a little while before making any judgment.  Also it wouldn’t hurt to get your facts straight.

Again though, you change the argument.  I’m not disagreeing with anything you said.

But I told you to name a 2nd round DE who was made INACTIVE on Week 1 of their rookie, that turned out to be a stud.  You never see second round draft picks - especially defensive ends as a healthy scratch.  It never happens which is why I said, if it’s the case with Epinesa then I’d consider they to be a disappointment.  You disagreed.

    So I’ll ask you again:

Name a 2nd round DE who was made INACTIVE on Week 1 of their rookie, that turned out to be a stud?

    Overrated

Poyer - solid player and his contract is not too excessive. Limited in coverage but doesn't make a lot of mistakes

Morse - he was an upgrade and adequate last year but for the money spent he is overrated.

Milano - a fine player but this board thinks he is far better than he actually is

    Underrated

Brown - Diggs is better but not by much. Brown is a very good route runner, has very good hands, has excellent but not elite speed, and decent run after catch ability.  It will be very interesting to see how Daboll uses Brown this year.

Hughes - Jerry is still a very good pass rusher. He doesn't get any benefit of the doubt from the officials. And he is more than adequate against the run.

Murphy (vomit in my mouth) - for the money spent and the lack of jmpact plays he has been a terrible free agent value. That said he eats up a lot of snaps that will keep other guys fresh. He plays to the whistle and sets edge reasonably well even though he is not stout running directly at him. And his last 8 games played may been his best in a Bills uniform. Maybe he has fully recovered from ACL and can be a bit more disruptive pass rushing this year

    Overrated (by Bills fans):

Josh Allen.  Look he made some improvement last year and the trajectory seems to be pointing up.   But he has a LONG way to go.  The amount of excuses that Bills fans will make not to blame Allen is off the charts

Dawson Knox - He has shown some tremendous flashes but made some huge mental errors as well.  The missed block vs Houston was on him, and it was a killer.  He has issues with drops too.

    Underrated (by Bills fans):

Trent Murphy - decent DE that plays the run well.  He will never be a monster pass rusher, but remember, there’s a reason why he started over Shaq Lawson.

Brian Daboll - not the best OC but not the worst either.  He dialed up some good plays last season that weren’t executed well, included many downfield passes which Allen couldn’t connect.

TJ Yeldon - Yeldon was a good 3rd down back for Jacksonville and he was effective when he got a chance to play last year in Cincy.  The fumble are a huge issue but if he could get that taken care of he’s a good runner and receiver

Epensa was the 54th overall pick.  You can’t find other examples of players drafted around that spot that didn’t dress or play in their first NFL game?  And I’d note that in this case the player didn’t have a OTAs, a full training camp or 4 preseason games to get ready and we still aren’t even sure that he’s not dressing.

Ok but we’re talking 1st or 2nd DE’s.  That’s a position that rookies can jump and contribute early.   Name a DE that was taken in the 2nd round that was a healthy scratch in his first game?  I’m sure there haven’t been many and if you can find a DE that didn’t dress and turned out to be a stud, I’m sure it’s an outlier.  I’m concerned that AJ has a low ceiling

There is a lot of pressure on Daboll. And on Josh Allen. I think the Bills have to be around the middle of the league in terms of ranking and they have to be able to engineer drives when we need them.

BINGO!  Fans love to criticize Daboll but give Allen a free pass.

Both have been in Buffalo for 3 seasons, have been given some degree of freedom/autonomy, and have provided with some excellent offensive weapons.

I don’t see how you can’t lump them together in terms of offensive success.  If the offense is good or bad it will attributed to both of them.

I have never figured out why people defer their own selections for a strangers.  Seems like good for seller, bad for you.

Yeah these type of subscription services have been real successful marketing tactics for a lot of smaller companies.  I guess the appeal is that they make good gifts to people.  But personally I never liked the idea.

  9. The weird thing about picking Miami to win 10 games this season is that it would seem to contract the plans the organization has for Tua.  Many believe Fitzpatrick is the bridge QB and will turns the reigns over to Tua at some point this season.  If Miami is 10-6, there’s a good chance that probably doesn’t happen.  Not so sure they want him to sit the entire year.  But then again, it worked great for Mahomes - so who knows?

I think Duke dropped his shot. They wanted a big catch radius WR who could make contested catches. McD stated his #1 priority was finding WR's who can catch. Seems Davis and Hodgins are those guys and proved in camp that they could do what Duke could do but younger, better, and cheaper. If Duke sticks on the PS, it is merely a covid/injury stash. The future is Diggs/Brown/Beasley/Davis/Hodgins.  McKittrick will stick around as a gadget for now and get his jet sweeps but by next year they may look to upgrade.  Roberts or another ST player may land on the roster, but my guess is they find a return man from the DB or RB side not the WR side.

What did Duke in was the playoff loss in Houston.  He had a tremendous opportunity coming off a good games versus NYJ.  In big moments Duke came up empty including failing to make contested catches twice (1 in the endzone at the end of the half) and dropping another pass toward the end of the game.  His calling card was that if he could get his hands on the ball, he could make the catch.  His play dictated the opposite.

If Duke makes one of those catches, you can easily argue it would be a different game.

From that moment on, I think it eliminated any thought that he could be a contributor at WR and the team knew they needed a significant upgrade at WR.

I like Duke and hope he catches on with another team as well.  I think he has pretty good talent and could contribute on ST’s.  I don’t think he’s a starter but can him helping in 4 wide or different passing packages

  11. I’m shocked that this is actually a news story.  Clearly Smith used “parking cars” as a euphemism for being out of the league or not playing in the NFL.  Putting this in the headline makes it seems like he’s literally parking cars.  The author must be on a pay-per-click deal

Yes.  A number of posters cite that snow game where Peterman completed something like 50% of his passes (granted they were to Bills receivers only)  as a "good" game and proof of future potential.

He also had the TD catch that was ruled incomplete on NE.  Pretty sad that’s considered a “highlight”
