Agree with the first Para. Regarding the massive hangover story, yeah I didn't like it but 1) we have no idea how common it is for Josh 2) I don't know why you would be "convinced" Mahomes doesn't ever do that. First off, do you follow Mahomes content thoroughly and carefully? Second, it's not as though his "Quarterback Producer" mom and brother are abstainers. We know at least one Chiefs assistant coach was drinking hard at work, so it's not like the Chiefs have an abstinance culture. Maybe Mahomes parties but he just doesn't have "good friends" who tell stories about it on him on their podcast interview, so how would you know? The only QB I'm pretty confident never drank to excess was Mr Avocado Ice Cream and I don't eat Tomatoes, Tom Brady.
-
I think in his first years, where the Bills were being questioned on the decision to draft him, their PR folks encouraged some content to be dropped at workouts with Palmer, the Covid-year WR workouts in Florida, etc etc. It made both Josh and their decision to draft him look better, to hear that he was working hard off-season to improve. Now that Josh gets followed by cameras on vacation and recognized even in southern Cali, I think he actively discourages sharing of off-season content because he doesn't want cameras hiding in the bushes and fans sneaking into the stands.

This doesn't seem to be common knowledge to Palmer. All Palmer said is he doesn't start as early as he did, earlier in his career when he wasn't playing in January. For all you know he makes up for starting later with working more/longer later in the off season. If you have a link to the Joe Marino thing I'll give him a listen. But I don't have a problem with you or anyone else critiquing that Josh (as far as he discusses publicly) doesn't seem to be paying much attention to diet and gets drunk and hung over on at least some days off. Whether not doing those things would help Josh advance, I don't know - what diet does Mahomes or Burrows follow, do you know? Do they get drunk? Does Hurst? Lawrence? Tom Brady is famous for his disciplined approach to diet and lifestyle - what's Rodgers approach? What I think is disingenuous and/or naive is to think you really have a good enough idea off what the person Josh is like from those tidbits to pass judgement on him as a person and decide if he's someone you'd like or not.

Well, to be honest, after I saw some of the reactions around here, I regretted posting this at all. As I discussed with @Alphadawg7, my intent was to point out that some of the over-the-top stuff here about how Josh is now seismicly more body and health and nutrition conscious and focused solely on football is a bit much; how the POV presented in the "Beyond Blue and Red" and Pat McAfee pieces is pretty skewed. Two of Josh's best friends (Jordan Palmer and Kyle Allen) have him talking about golf and drinking and getting hung over (apparently often enough that he has a "day saver" to hand in the form of pedialyte and a personal oxygen tank). So the true picture is more nuanced, Josh is not all work and no play. But I personally don't find the idea that a wealthy young athlete plays golf and gets drunk to be like some amazing knock on him, and certainly not an indication of laziness. "Work hard, play hard" is a common mantra. What I am is I'm astounded at the depths and the distortions some people will take stuff to. How "I don't overindulge in film" becomes "said he isn't a huge film guy" or even "doesn't watch film". Then we get to the idea that Josh said he's just "country strong" and doesn't lift weights or work out off season, which is not what he's ever said that I've heard. Talking with Chris Simms, he discussed how he trains with QB strength guru Ryan Flaherty (whom he calls Flaher Bear). Flaherty is big on lower body training such as trap bar deadlifts for speed, and has other training recommendations such as no bench press, I think no military press, instead strengthen upper body with band exercises and plyometric pushup variants and so forth - the idea being to maintain flexibility and to strengthen the back and hips, single leg strength etc. I found this article about it. Ditto somehow because they didn't hear it on the 5 o'clock news (I guess) people started assuming Josh no longer works with Jordan Palmer, where Palmer sits down at OBD and talks to Brown and Tasker about working with Josh every off season, and not only that continuing to consult on mechanics during the season to keep things tuned up. It's just bizarro world to me, and bringing in this total goof-ass Jason Whitlock with his idea that Stef Diggs is pining for better strip clubs and Josh Allen is lazy, just adds to the bizarreness.

Kelce’s plea for Chris Jones to end his holdout
Beck Water replied to BillsFan619's topic in The Stadium Wall
On the one hand, Chris Jones is under contract this year, so honor the contract is a thing. On the other hand, IIRC Kelce signed a 4 year contract in 2020 and was given more money in 2022 then extended thru 2025. So it just may be a little hippo critical of him to poke into Jones business -

This. You don't know what's going on? Seems simple to me. Chris Jones is 26 and in the last year of his contract. He wants to get paid. "You must know something that I don't know" "I don't know what's going on", seems pretty simple to me. Guy wants to be paid like Q or Jeffrey Simmons or at least Daron Payne. Guy doesn't want to go into the season knowing he is one slit-film-turf snag away from sitting on a sofa next season with nothing. -
Kelce’s plea for Chris Jones to end his holdout

Chiefs #1 receiver is still on the team - poking publicly into his teammate's business. Other than that, the Chiefs are kind of where the Bills were last season, expecting Kadarius Toney and/or Skyy Moore to take a step, like the Bills were expecting Gabe Davis and Isaiah McKenzie to take a step. They have Rashee Rice (drafted in the 2nd round, noted for inconsistent route running and physicality) instead of5th rounder Khalil Shakir, and Justin Watson as their Sherfield-ish type. Veach apparently feels that as long as Kelce is on the field and he throws some WR "lemons" in the hopper, the assistant coaches will train them up on how to run their routes and get to the right place and Mahomes will make delicious, flavorful iced lemonade with them. It worked last year, kinda, and MVS is still on the team. The interesting wrinkle is that the Chiefs long-term WR coach, Joe Blaymaier, took on the title/role "passing game coordinator" and they promoted one of their offensive assistants to WR coach. Time will tell if that has an impact. It kind of comes down to "do you think Skyy Moore or Kadarius Toney will step up and contribute at least as much as Juju Smith-Schuster?", which was 78 receptions, 933 yds last season. -
I put it here, along with my best effort at an accurate transcript. What he actually said was he doesn't like to "overindulge in film" Fair admission that my characterizing this as "he doesn't like to get too into watching film on upcoming opponents" can be misinterpreted and apparently has been - though I still think there's a long walk between "doesn't like to get too into" and "doesn't watch" or "isn't a big film guy".
-
I disagree on yours being a fair characterization. What Allen did was nod and say "yeah. yeah" when McAfee asked if he was "huge film guy". What he actually said is that he doesn't like to "overindulge" in film, and I actually thought his comments there about other teams tending to play the Bills differently than they play most offenses were interesting.

An injury settlement only makes sense if the actual duration of the injury recovery and rehab is shorter than the season. It wasn't disclosed what Davidson's injury was except "knee". If he had an ACL injury, the recovery + rehab would be longer than the season, so no point to an injury settlement

Maybe he doesn't want to coach?
-
Not quite...it's the term of the settlement, plus 6 weeks. Let's say he has a UCL injury estimated to require 5 weeks to heal. As I understand it, he gets a 4 week settlement (because preseason isn't paid), and the Bills can sign him 6 weeks AFTER the those 4 weeks, in other words, Week 10. Again, Nope. Length of the injury settlement, PLUS 6 weeks. He can sign with any other team immediately.
-
C'mon Man. Where has he said this? He said he doesn't like to "overwatch" film or get "too into it" or something like that. There's a world of difference between something to the effect of "I'm not obsessive compulsive about watching film every minute I get" and "I don't watch film". And Allen gave a reason for what he said - that teams play the Bills differently than what they put on film. Edit: my best try at a transcript here

Beyond Blue & Red- Josh Allen's Life On and Off the Field

Who is "they" and where has it been said that Josh is "lazy"? -

I thought Allen, Darnold, Kyle Allen, Burrow etc always worked with Palmer through his company, QB Summit. Never heard of "Exos". Watch the video for yourself if you like. Palmer talks a bit about how he works year-round now, and how XFL work fits in with the work he was already doing. -
Beyond Blue & Red- Josh Allen's Life On and Off the Field
Beck Water replied to Warcodered's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm just really puzzled by where this idea that 2021 is the last time Josh worked with Jordan Palmer came from. There's a One Bills Live piece with Jordan Palmer https://www.buffalobills.com/video/one-bills-live-jordan-palmer-on-working-with-josh-and-kyle-allen Palmer talks about how the new way of thinking is that he's working with his guys year-round to help them maintain their technique, that Monday and Tuesday he's on zoom with up to 30 guys (I would assume Josh is a priority client) watching game tape to break down their mechanics. A bit later (5:40 in) he talks about how he uses side by side video from the off-season and from the game to highlight how their mechanics were at their best and what was off. About 2:30 in, Brown asks "in Josh worked with you this off season, did he have to change his regime with the UCL injury and take maybe a couple extra weeks?". Jordan talks about how guys who are starters, playing in January, and who have "complete ownership of their stroke" (like Josh) "start a lot later" in the off-season and take more time off, and that recovery is as valuable for him now as extra work used to be (3:30 in) Anyway, throughout the whole thing all 3 seem to be working from the understanding that Josh is still working with Palmer every off season, including this past off-season, although since he's now "playing in January" and plays a very physical style, he needs more time to recover and starts later. So I'm really puzzled where this idea came from that after 2021 when he got his big contract, he stopped working with Palmer and other off-season team. I don't think Josh said "rest his body" was all he was going to do all off season, I do think he said that's what he'd do to start. It's pretty clear Palmer thinks he worked with Josh during the off-season!! By the way, Jordan states that Josh's UCL this past season was worse than the injury his rookie year where he missed 5 weeks (4 games + bye) and his improved mechanics helped him play through it. -
No disrespect taken. I understand why you take it that way. I think we should all be aware that great QB spend free time doing other things - Brady and Rodgers both golf, it was clear from the Superbowl party that wasn't the first time Stafford had alcohol cross his little lips. Young healthy millionaire athletes have a right to have fun. What I'm in response to, is really the stuff that's been showing up in some of the other threads, the Pat McAfee and Jordan Palmer threads - that Josh has made a "seismic change" to his diet and lifestyle by ditching his "partygirl" galpal Britt, he's completely focused on football now etc etc etc. My point really wasn't to point a finger at Josh for getting drunk and golfing, I think that's pretty normal wealthy young athlete behavior. My point is that the storyline Josh has made huge changes to his diet and workout and lifestyle, isn't a full picture either. There's some "spin" (I know, Alert the Media, a PR piece made by the Bills and a podcast their employees host involves "spin") Both are pictures with some truth. The full picture, has to reflect both.

He has always talked about lifting weights for his lower body. I'm not sure where this "Josh doesn't lift" thing comes from. He says he works on being "strong but flexible" in his upper body so he doesn't do upper body lifts. That's not quite the same as "get by on farm strength". For the record, Brady was public about not lifting weights but working to maintain flexibility with strength. I'm not sure what all that entails but I think it means kettleballs, elastic bands, and so forth. I know we got some guys here who do personal training, maybe they will step up and educate me.
-
I'm a little confused here. It's a "last chance" for the Bills because Milano is 29, Tre is 28, Dawkins is 29, Diggs is 29, Morse is 31....but the Bengals are young with Reader at 29, Hendrickson 28, Hilton 28, Awuzie is 28, Hill is 28, Hubbard is 28, La'el Collins is 30, Boyd is 29, Karras is 30? I take your point that Von is 34 and Poyer and Hyde are 32, and how much longer do they have ? But the rest puzzles me.

Joy Taylor. Shady had some sense too. The rest of it is just "well, all these other teams have good QB and tried to improve during the off season". But doesn't every team try to do that every off season? The question is always, how will the improvements hold up on the field? I think the Jags could do something. Lawrence looked like he took a jump last year, they now have a Superbowl winning coach who knows something, the team improved to a winning record last season and made the playoffs. They could be where the Bills were in 2019. They've been able to draft high and add talent, and sign some decent pieces in FA. Their OL situation is a question mark, losing Juwaan Taylor to the Chiefs; their WR room doesn't strike me as elite. The Jets have a really really good defense, a talented WR1, and added a great RB. I think their OL and their WR depth are questions - basically there's this paradox where Rodgers complained about the WR talent GB gave him then moved to NYJ and immediately asked that all these WR he complained about be signed. Rodgers when he's "on" is dangerous. But sometimes when you try to buy an elite team like that it works, and sometimes it fizzles (see Wilson, Russell) Fundamentally, though, I think a lot of these news pundits have it mixed between "elite" and "potential".

There's a very curated and polished edition of Josh presented in the Bills PR pieces like "Beyond Blue and Red". And I think that's part of a true picture. Josh probably is a genuine guy who understands that kids idolize him and that his 5 second signing may give them lasting positive memories. But this is part of a true picture too - -Josh who played a bunch of fancy golf courses this off season -who makes silly claims when drunk about being the "best athlete on the planet" -who can't stand to talk about getting embarrassed at a game 2x immediately afterwards (by his buddy's wife) and shuts that down hard -who is getting stupid drunk leaving him badly hungover going into a day off during preseason -who admits he doesn't like to get too into watching film on upcoming opponents - maybe he has a good reason, and maybe he still watches enough. Or maybe not.

Are the Dolphins obviously better than the Bills?
Beck Water replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
If anyone wants a Dolphins roster to go through position by position, this might help https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/who-made-the-dolphins-initial-2023-53-man-roster-a-breakdown-of-each-position/ar-AA1fXtkG Football is a team game. Ultimately what matters most isn't how good the individuals are, but how well they play as a team.
