Either no starters at all, or just run regular game prep and have them play one series at most.

My question on this is: “Which starter, if injured, makes it worth losing him in meaningless game just before the playoffs?”

The Bills are very lucky at this point to only have one Day 1 starter out for the playoffs (Cody Ford). My hope is that Beas returns in time. Everybody else could use the rest/rehab.

I'm trying to think of a recent Super Bowl champion that didn’t have a week off before their first playoff game. Anybody think the Chiefs will be “rusty” before their first playoff game?

Weren't the chiefs getting dominated by the texans in the first half of their first playoff game last year lol luckily bill o brien went full bill o brien

I don't even know what to say anymore.

Now we have to play starters vs Miami and risk the health of starters because of possible SECOND ROUND matchups.

And just to be clear, the team you are afraid of hasn't even clinched a playoff spot yet, let alone advanced to Rd 2, and in your scenario would have to go to Pittsburgh round 1, a team they've lost to twice already.

    🤦‍♂️

I think op is afraid of them due to how they match up with us...they're not one of the best teams in the playoff field overall but they could give us problems.  Also we'd avoid Baltimore potentially in round 2 who would give us even more problems lol

I know at the end of the day these rankings don't mean much, but how did we drop on ESPN after going on the road and laying a smackdown?

Was it because our opponent was a non playoff team and the Packers beat the Titans?

Yes lol its hard to argue with 3...depending on how you define power rankings i would probably go gb at 1 buf at 2 and kc 3 in my own personal rankings.  Kc has kind of been sleepwalking recently

Been looking for them on the site as heard it second hand.

    https://nesn.com/2020/12/bill-belichick-not-buying-josh-allen-craze-patriots-coach-clarifies-stance/

So he was proud of his defense in windy Orchard Park, when McD played into his hands.

Nice to see Allen allowed to dismantle them at will.

Especially love the sour grapes on the Diggs TD pass.....  Please explain his thought process that it should have been 10 yards only?

Also heard on 'GR on the Davis TD that was called back that Belicheat was messing with Allen as he didn't see a coverage issue, he just was standing beside the official waiting to call timeout.

I think belichick probably said some off the record stuff about how he was proud of his defense and they made him look like an average qb in the first matchup.  If you've ever seen a belichick press conference he is always very complimentary of the opposing team no matter how bad they are lol

I would rest as many of our starters as possible. Maybe a few series for them at the most.

Our goal is to beat KC, and they will have rested in week 17 plus the bye.

Gotta keep our guys as rested and healthy as we can

Kc is in no position to be resting starters...they have not looked sharp in over a month.  Couple different bounces here and there over the last few weeks and theyre the 2 seed right now

You think Matt Barkley can lead the team to victory over a desperate Dolphins team?

Josh Allen is the offense. Barkley is awful..... how do people not see this?

I think you don't invest in a good backup qb unless you think you have a guy that can actually take you somewhere in the playoffs if they have to step in so by definition our own organization doesn't think matt Barkley could beat anyone 🤣

Brian Flores has referred to Ryan Fitzpatrick as his "relief pitcher."  He's not playing by the normal coaching rules, and is not concerned with hurting his starter's confidence by benching him.  If Tua is playing poorly with the playoffs on the line, there is absolutely no doubt that Fitz will be replacing him.

The Dolphins are a good team, and they will be desperate.  This is also a division matchup.  I could see this being a close game with our starters playing the entire way.  If we play Matt Barkley and our backups the majority of the game, points are going to be tough to come by.  I really don't think the Bills will emerge with a victory in that scenario.

Sean McDermott and the coaching staff simply need to decide what is more important:

    -  Going into the playoffs with an extra bye week, and removing the risk of losing a key player to injury.

    -  Going into the playoffs with continued momentum and a 6 game winning streak.

    -  Homefield advantage in the event we play the Steelers again.

    -  The chance someone else knocks off the Chiefs and we avoid playing them altogether.

Personally, I would lean towards playing the backups and going into the postseason as healthy as possible.  I don't think we lose any momentum by sitting our top guys for a single game.  That seems to happen when teams rest starters in Week 17 AND get a first round bye.  Not to mention, coming out flat against the Dolphins would pose a bigger risk of losing our edge going into the playoffs.

Considering that Cleveland is in the same position as Miami, I also find it unlikely that Pittsburgh wins with Mason Rudolph under center.  So we could end up with the #2 seed regardless of what happens.

Finally, I don't think anyone is anyone knocking off the Chiefs in the Divisional Round.  Anything else is probably wishful thinking.  The road to the Super Bowl goes through Arrowhead.

Id give Tennessee/Baltimore a shot against kc but I think pit is gonna screw it up for us and lose to Cleveland and we'll get stuck with ten/Baltimore in round 2 after beating indy and kc will get Cleveland.  I wouldve loved getting indy then pit

Pretty good chance the Ravens get the 5 seed so that leaves Browns,Colts, Dolphins for 6 and 7 this must be strategic on Tomlins part that the Browns and Colts are easier opponents then the Dolphins

Browns and dolphins are pretty similar in talent level but i would want to play the team that needs to rely on a closer to come in and finish the game at qb every time Colts seem like theyre a tier above Miami/Cleveland

This may sound like a cop out... I don’t find the Ravens to be a team that cares if they are forced into the pass. The Bills have a tremendous pass defense, but again, the RPO game is an absolute momentum killer. You could make a stop on 1st down, break up a pass on second, and now on 3rd and long, Jackson can break one off for 9 yards, and it’s 1st and 10. That sort of attrition can wear you out on the field. And before you know it, your 2 score lead is now a field goal loss. We’ve all seen that happen, and not just to the Bills.

The league used to be about sustaining drives with consistent running, and throwing to keep the defense honest. Now it’s the complete opposite, on both sides of the ball. Timely and efficient running, can demoralize a defense, and force your offense out of its rhythm. I do like Daboll’s methodology of scoring fast and often and then grinding it out with the run game in the 4th. And let me add that, I do think the Bills can beat a team like the Ravens, I’d still rather play Indy or Cleveland.

The Ravens defense is not anywhere near as intimidating as it has been in recent memory. But again, they are well coached and can turn it up if they have too. I do think that pass protection is absurdly good for Allen. It’s been unreal to see how much time he has in the pocket, and that alone could be the difference in sustaining a playoff run this season.

Its kind of a double edged sword though because quite often you see a team get stopped for a loss or a minimal gain running the football on first down and they are not in a good position to pick up the first. Theres a pretty good reason you don't see many ground and pound teams anymore its pretty difficult to sustain a drive that way compared to the passing game nowadays where tight coverage is often flagged as PI and you have to cuddle the qb to avoid a roughing the passer call haha if the ravens struggle in the playoffs again I think theyre going to have to take a good hard look at their offensive scheme

I think we're selling our run d short...Henry didn't do much against us in the titans game.  And against the chiefs we played a lot of cover 4 hoping Andy Reid would be too proud to run the football or something haha last night the pats had one nice drive running the football and scored 9 total points and had 200 ish total yards

He must be running the scout team or something? I only knew about him cuz I live in Giants fan territory and he was supposed to be their next big thing when they drafted him lol

Throw Elite out the door for a second... and read this

IS buffalo a top 3 Team in this league?

My answer is yes... And to me that makes us an elite team.

I also get what your saying but come on... lol

Yea its really a semantics thing based on how you define 'elite' i would not at all argue we aren't a top 3 team right now.  But this business is such a hindsight/revisionist history type thing where if we get bounced from the playoffs in the divisional round even the conversation becomes 'well were they really THAT good' when thats pretty unfair because it was still an impressive as hell regular season regardless of what happens in the playoffs.  I think all these fans of other teams/pundits that are down on the bills are hoping for us to underperform in the playoffs so they can play the 'i told you so' card

They should stick w/ Darnold.  He can be a very good QB and still live up to his draft expectations - they have given him almost nothing to work with, and he needs better coaching.

They'll probably still draft a QB, though.

Its really been the talent josh had to work with year 1 for darnolds entire career.  As much as we all dislike the jets you've gotta feel bad for the kid

Coming in the Bills forums picking this fight is scetchy.

I mean I kind of get what he's saying...elite is just a word really.  I dont have much faith in any of these afc teams being good enough to win 2-3 playoff games against this tough afc field and that includes the chiefs.  I dont think there really are any traditional 'elite' teams anymore that you just expect to roll into the super bowl.  The changing of the guard at qb has a lot to do with that I think...drew and Tom are getting up there in age lol

I was just reading the "Tua to the bench" thread.

I personally love coach flo and love what he's doing. Its really weird about Tua. It seems he has a damn cult like following and some fans who are in his cult just can't recognize that he's not doing so well. They will give him every excuse in the book. Most likely because they were the ones who predicted or went along the lines of he's the most ready nfl qb to come out in generations or he's the best qb in the class. Personally I didnt want him because of his size and injury. I wanted Herbert because we all knew Burrow was a bengal. I will support him because he is a fins qb but im not afraid to call a duck a duck. We look so much better with Fitzy in (I have a man crush!!) I love Fitz. Tua does some things well but he has alot to learn.

To answer your question, I support it because its worked. I understand the arguments against it though. At the same time I hope we bring in another qb via draft at some point to get Tua competition. We will also be drafting weapons for Tua to grow with. Hopefully it works out but as far as coach flo... coach of the year in my opinion. He has our whole team playing very good, even with a bunch of rookies on the o line and scrubs for rbs and wrs

Being elite isn't about just wins, its about how you win also. Look at pittsburg this year. They won 11 before they lost but their wins were definitely not looking good.

You guys are a very solid football team and organization right now.

Right its really a results driven business...that much is true so its hard to criticize him for something that hasn't hurt them yet.  It just strikes me as 'lets develop our rookie qb and if we can win the game late with fitzpatrick we'll take that too'...seems like such an odd way to approach a playoff race. No doubt flores is doing a good job but if Tua struggles in a playoff game its gonna turn into a huge issue.

They should be. Right now, with the Steelers in rest the QB and try not to get anyone injured mode, the Browns should win. That makes it a win and you're in game. The game being in Buffalo and the Bills being the hottest team in football, create a scary proposition for Miami. My prediction is Tua will crap the bed and Fitz will be asked to pull his magic routine earlier than last week. If we want the game, the Dolphins lose.

I'm sure none of us are truly unbiased and we really don't want Tua to be good but I have seen him a lot from watching nfl redzone and im pretty sure anyone would tell you that offense isn't even close to as effective as it is with Fitz starting.   Had a debate with my giants fan friends about it...they said 'well tua doesn't turn the ball over as much so he gives them the best chance of keeping them in the game' but he doesn't do anything positive either.  It really is exactly like the Tyrod situation like many others have said.  If Fitz was starting I would definitely give them a chance in this game he neutralizes the pass rush by getting the ball out quick which always seemed to give us issues in the past.  Although we had no trouble with the steelers who have been playing that way all season.

Miami with Fitz is as respectable as any other team not named KC IMO. Probably better than the Ravens. With Tua they are the worst team in the dance.

I am just blown away at how the media is so supportive of what flores is doing over there. Not starting Fitz should have cost them their season...it took an absolute miracle for them to win that raiders game.  But somehow he is a genius for playing the worse qb 75% of the game and then pulling him

Winning division with losing record means the team already had advantage in regular season  playing 6 games vs very bad teams and still couldn’t get decent record. Then they are awarded with home field advantage at playoffs. Very strange 🙃

Or your division drew a schedule of really tough games...nfc east got the afc north this year.  The bengals were a tough out even when burrow was healthy

  19. I dont think the ravens are a good comparison.  The ravens aren't built anywhere near the same way as us and theyre quite one dimensional in a way that makes it difficult for them to come back when they fall behind. Plus that year they were rolling was Greg romans first year with the team.   When they start seeing some of the best defenses in the afc in the playoffs they will always struggle.  The bills are a bit more battle tested this year as it feels like we were playing tough defenses every single week
