If your argument is that 5th and 7th round safeties can grow into quality and even high-end starters after a couple of years, Poyer and Hyde are great examples. If your argument is that 5th and 7th round safeties can start right away and be serviceable, they are terrible examples.

This is extremely defeatist of me, but I am concerned they are not going to learn their lesson about WR and the first round WR may not be coming now.

Yeah okay. let’s look at 2023. There were 6 safeties drafted in the fifth round. They started 2 7 0 (IR) 3 4 0 games, respectively. Love that.

But in previous years, we would somehow beat KC in the regular season, and still end up the 2 seed or lower because Allen dropped a couple games and the Chiefs would be hosting the AFCCG. I know folks don’t want to hear that, but if the Bills had playoff homefield for like 6 years straight, we probably have broken through by now.

The other difference is that Allen throws away a couple games during the regular season that costs us byes and #1 seeds.

that’s both true. However, you said that 5 or 6 of our drafts picks could be serious contributors in 2024. That’s very unlikely and a bad plan. If that happened, it’s probably the best draft in Bills history. Developmental depth doesn’t make your team better than solid experienced vets. That’s why they are called “developmental.” Because they suck and you are trying to develop them into not sucking. Ultimately, that is the fatal flaw in your premise. Yes, the Bills need to and will get much younger. That’s exciting. However this will make them a worse team in 2024. Probably not by much, but unless they have an unbelievable draft class, it’s pretty much guaranteed to be worse. Sherfield dropped gigantic passes in our playoff loss to KC. He’s a bum, so what do you expect, but he played a large role in the loss. anyway, Gabe signed a big deal and I don’t think Trent is on a team, so it sounds like no NFL team was slavering over his 1 seven yard reception in the postseason.

Well, we all know that you thought Sherfield was gonna be a big WR contributor in the postseason. For those keeping score at home, Trent finished his postseason with 3 targets, 1 catch and 7 total yards. So maybe you aren't the bees knees at WR e v a l.

I count 4 guys who are starters at the NFL level including a KICKER, and 1 of them that “seriously” contributed for the Bills as a rookie and wasn’t a kicker. Out of 17 picks. But this is the draft where we are gonna get 2 or 3 of them. Because we need it to happen, I guess?

I don’t think the growing thing matters. I think that teams, years ago, decided they should do everything they to help their QB develop into a great passer. Run game is irrelevant. Defense is irrelevant. Surround your QB with weapons and figure out if he’s the guy. Levis is gonna get a shot. And unless Hopkins is shot, Levis can win 9 games on that team and prove he’s the guy. Then you can worry about everything else. Man I gotta say, merging EVERY big FA signing into the free agent tracker thread is really silly. For little deals, sure I get it. for the big names or potential Bills targets? Just asinine. What else do we have to talk about?

This is a terrible plan. Not only has Beane never had a draft where more than 3 guys have “seriously” contributed day one, but to bank on the draft as a “plan” when picking late in rounds and having lots of day 3 picks is just awful when you know it’s a complete crapshoot. We currently have 1 starting safety on the roster. Why? Because every safety that Beane and co. drafted in their tenure here has sucked.
