How often do "project" quarterbacks work out?
DuckyBoys replied to Klaista2k's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Successful real "project QBs" -- UDFAs -- are rarities, and there have only been two who have been bonafide successes in the last 20 years: Kurt Warner and Tony Romo. Case Keenum may be another. That is also a reflection of how short a leash those guys get. Teams aren't going to stick with a guy like that for even a bit if he struggles Romo and Warner took off right away. On the flip side teams typically will give a 1st rounder a very long leash. They have much more invested and I assume there is some ego involved not wanting to accept they may have drafted the wrong guy. The argument about drafting Allen really boils down to should they have taken Rosen instead. Anything else is ridiculous because we dont know if they could have moved up enough to get Darnold or Mayfield. I wanted Allen or Mayfield. I thought Allen was more risky but could be better in the long run. I thought Mayfield's floor was at least mediocre starter but could he overcome the physical size to be truly great. Don't like Rosen just don't think he can hold up physically to the NFL. Darnold I cant explain it but just didnt want a USC qb Thought too many turnovers given he played with the cast he had. Russell Wilson is worth every penny. That line sucks and has sucked but he more often than not makes it work and keeps himself safe by ducking down or getting out of bounds. You can argue the money spent on the cast around him might have made the team better even with a lesser qb but he makes lemonade from lemons -

EJ was mentally weak If you watched FSU games you would have seen warning signs. Once Marrone lost faith in him he just lost even more confidence and played even worse. I dont think Allen is cut from the same cloth but we'll. -
Do you want the Bills to make the playoffs this year?

I think the guidelines for qbs is changing as far as the draft. Used to be teams really focused on number of starts in college and success and you got draft gems like Andre Ware, Tim Tebow, Vince Young Draft stock recently seems to me more beholden to physical skills than just production in college. Tannehill is probably the closest comparison to Allen His stock jumped for nowhere based on physical tools Scouts seem to be looking at ability to make NFL throws/durability/mobility More of a eye ball test than in the past -
Week 6 predictions: Bills at Texans
DuckyBoys replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
On paper Texans win handily However this is a team that has two fg wins both gift wrapped by the opposing coach They got a a early X-Mas present from Frank Reich and last week Jason Garrett went the other way with his decision and it cost the Cowboys the game. Can the Bills put two solid games together? Can the Texans win three in a row? O'Brien sucks, we somehow get it done 17-16 -
crazy they were team mates Still not sure what is up with Watkins Not like he's been killing it with the Chiefs and we was outplayed last year by Kuup and Woods for the Rams

That was a theory Barnwell wrote about last week Basically trade off your qb before his rookie contract is up to allow you to spend his cap money on other positions while endlessly reloading at qb That way you to dont end up with Joe Flucco long term and no money for the rest of your roster. -

Tannehill and Cutler are good comps Both shot up in the draft based on combine not their body of work in college Hopefully Josh turns out much better -
I think Hopkins might be the best in the NFL right now He's even qb proof, guy put up 13 tds and 1378 yds with more than half a season of Tom Savage and TJ Yeates at qb 1524 yds out of Hoyer/Weeden His year with almost a 1000 yds with Osweiler at qb Tre keeps him in check we got a shot!

They ran the west coast and the ball was out of Brett's hand quickly He got himself in trouble when he held the ball and ad libbed. He also had Sterling Sharpe and a better all around cast. Josh is in a tough spot with what he has to work with. -

That is true and Trubisky is still a project from what I have watched He's had some stinkers along with the 6 td game Mahomes lets see what things look like after say 24 starts Not jinxing him, he looks great so far. If Allen shows improvement from where he is now till week 16 its a success. Next year he should be even better and so on. The goat threw for 189 a game and took 41 sacks as a rookie -

Think you guys need to look further back than the last year or two. QBs coming in and playing well right away is not the historical norm. More important is do they continue to get better from year 1 to 2 to 3. Most qbs are not ready to start and win in year 1. Mahomes might end up being the best ever or he might regress. Lot of rookies recent years looked good than have gone backwards. We just played one Marriota looked really good but has gone backwards the last two seasons. Prescott going backwards. Trubisky's first four starts look very similar to Allens Almost identical to be honest -

There have been many qbs who were drafted early in the first round and turned it around after putrid starts. Alex Smith stats from year one make Allen look like Tom Brady. Bradshaw was drafted #1 overall and took him 5 years before he threw more tds than ints. Steve Young was putrid till year 6 and that doesnt count his USFL years. Drew Brees was not very good till year 4. Eli was horrible year one. -
Mayfield has looked great, rest look like nfl rookies. Allen is not a finished product. Your not going to see that till maybe end of 2019. Maybe even 2020 season. Long as he does not repeat the same mistakes he will be fine. He wasn't asked to do much against the Titans. Texans are good against the run so I expect he will have to try and carry more of the load this Sunday. So we can cheer for him to do well. If he does you can put away the torches and pitchforks. If he stinks it up all you haters can come on here and crow about. Its how its going to be for a while.
