Can we talk about Gabe Davis's performance?
ngbills replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Davis is limited in his abilities plain and simple. People keep bringing up the targets. He had multiple games in the past few season with a ton of targets and still limited production. He had a 14 target game with 3 rec's and a bunch of 10/3, 8/3, 7/2 type games. You just cant really on him for the quick outs, slants or curls. SO you can only run so many deep plays to him depending on the D. He should be an accessory on this O not a main cog. -
Consolation prize - the Jets are screwed

Last year in his first stretch they were able to start of 5-1 with including 3 road wins. So its not unfathomable they can play solid D and win with a good running game and limited TO's. I would not bet money on it but would not be shocked either. -
If I am the Raiders I am running it up the gut until the Bills stop me. I would not be surprised if they have the ball 40 mins. Its Jacobs up the got and play action with Jimmy G to Adams all day. Hopefully our O shows up or a lot of us will be disappointed.

Well after this week if Raiders beat us, Jets beat Cowboys, Steelers beat Browns you are adding three to that list for sure. Without overreacting to week 1 - you assume Buf, KC, CIN, Jac are all locks. That leaves that MIA, NYJ, CLE, BAL, PIT, LAC, LVR all fighting for the 3 spots. -

Last season we lost to Zach Wilson and barely beat Mike White with Zonovan "Bam" Knight running the ball... -

Not really. They were 7-10 last year with Breece Hall going down and only playing 7 games. Why would they be that much worse this year? Last year they had Wilson, Flacco, White and Streveler at QB. They go run heavy and have Wilson play smart its not as hard as people are making it out to be. That is the point. People are acting like they were a 2 win team last year. They won 7 games with a rotating group of QB's. Wilson could settle in and play average ball and with a healthy Hall and Cook they are a better team than last year. -

Devils advocate - they still beat the Bills. If they view this as they can beat any teams with their D they could easily win games - 2 vs Pats, Broncos, Raiders, Falcons, Texans, Commanders, Browns. That is 9 wins. They only need a couple more wins in 2 games vs Fins, Giants, Cowboys, Chiefs, Eagles, Chargers. Can they win two of those and get to 11? Maybe. -

So we are ok having a sub par WR 2 because he is cheap and was a 4th round pick? There is a difference between this is a good player to have on your roster because of his cost and the role they play on the roster. They essentially committed to Gabe as #2 by giving Harty the contract they did. That money should have been used on a #2. Gave becomes part of the David/Sherfield/Cheaper Harty rotation. -

This was Davis stat line in the majority of games he has played. Fur some reason people think it will all the sudden change. He should be a 3 that once every few months goes off when the things go right for him. Kincaid and a WR not on this roster should be the secondary targets. I think so too. But the 100 catch rate were literally like handoffs so a meaningless stat. -
I hear you but... Zeurlein career from 40-50 yards = 83% Zeurlein career from 50+ = 55% You take that penalty. That is a 28% swing. If you dont trust your D on a 3 and 23 then what are you doing? You are playing scared. If your playing KC or another O with weapons you consider the it. But not vs a Zach Wilson Jets O.
-
Woud have been 3rd and 23 from the 35. That should be a defenses dream scenario vs a qb like Zach Wilson. I pay money to get that type of scenario. I dont settle on giving them a 43 yard FG. If you are scared of them converting a 3rd and 23 there then you should just fold up shop and call it a day.
-
The worse call was declining the penalty and letting Jets kick the 45 yarder. Should have pushed them back 10 and maybe you get a sack or turnover. They were very unlikely to convert a 3 and 25.
-
People are critical of Allen because he had a bad game and has a few bad games in the most recent batch. But I dont think I have ready any serious calls to get rid of him. Its mainly stuff like he needs to play better and how is to make that happen or what is going on with him. Is it the coaches? Lack of weapons? Game plan. That is a lot different than a Tyrod debate of not sure if he is the guy.
-
An every down back that in a game your team essentially led all night had under 50 yards and 12 carries? That is the kind of game your guy gets 25 carries if he is an every down back. Clearly they dont think he is. I dont either. At Georgia his high was 12 carries in 4years.

Edmunds is a free agent - gets 4/$72M Care to wager what Bernard would get? More like 4/$7.2M.
-
Cam is the closest comparison to Josh. So it would is a valid data point to track. I would say what is relevant is when Cam’s body starting to breaking down, when teams adjusted, etc. The hope is Josh masters the QB position so he can still be great when his running threat diminishes. Unless Josh is on some magic pills that day will come when his legs slow down or his will have an injury that accelerates that. Cam had the double whammy of losing his legs and his arm.
-
So professionals that say Bernard played well have good qualified opinions. But the professionals that said Edmunds was a top MLB are clueless. Got it.
-
He looked like the kid who showed up to the game without practicing, watching tape, reading scouting reports, etc. Either he was overhyped and lost his mind, was saying f you to the coaches im doing my think, or was just unprepared because he has other stuff going on. It’s not that extreme. Something is up if you look at the recent evidence. I think it’s coaching.
-
They are not gonna say yeah he sucked. If he remains out mlb you can expect multiple 50 yard runs per game as we saw. He will either shoot the wrong gap to avoid getting pancakes or get pancake and off to the races. Unless we bring up safety help for him and then our pass coverage will suffer.

Very low standards you have. Break out with 30 catches? Gave had 4 games with 70 yards? He had 5 or more catches in only 2 games all season. Give most nfl caliber guys reps and they will replicate those stats. Crowder had multiple 800 yard seasons and over 67 catches in one season. Mck had over 30 catches last year in what you call equals a breakout year for sherfield. And I am desperate? Makes no sense. You can make an argument you think they are better based on some subjective metric but the stats do say otherwise. And if you think Davis had a good year I don’t know what to say. He was invisible much of the season. He had about 10 games where he was a 2 catch for 30 yard guy like we saw Monday night. That is not good enough especially in an O that throws 40 times. So you’re right I should have said more 0-2 catch games not 0-1. Last season he had 4 games with 2 or less catches and only 1 100 yard game. In a pass heavy offense your #2 has to be better. -
A few topics/stats/info that have not been mentioned

This is deceiving because it only takes into account if he made the tackle. Plays he was blocked and the guy runs 50 yards have no impact here. Bernard did not get his first tackle vs run until the midway in the third quarter...says something. Half his tackles came when the Jets were just running the clock down. QTR 1 0 tackes QTR 2 0 tackles QTR 3 First tackle was a 9 yard run Second tackle was a 1 yard run that Oliver stuffed QTR 4 Third was a 5yd run 4th was a 2 yd QB sneak setting up FG w/ 2 min left running clock on 4 and 1 5th on a 1 yd run setting up FG w/ 2 min left running clock on 2 and 13 6th on a 6yd run setting up FG w/ 2 min left running clock on 3 and 12 I want to see stats on how many times he was pancaked. I saw at least a few. -

Gabe is going to bounce back despite stats that show he does not get open, has a ton of drops, and has more 0/1 catch games than big games. Harty has 67 receptions and has been the league going on 5 years. Sherfield also has 67 receptions and is going on his 6th year. How many players break out in year 6? And these are undrafted type guys not former first rounders hit by injuries. Yet we are told they are better than the McK, Beasley, Brown, Crowder, Sanders, etc who have all actually done something in the league. That is not saying I want those guys back, but dont sell lessor players as an upgrade. Thankfully we have not wasted any draft picks on WR's, what would we do if they had picked George Pickens instead of Elam... -
Taylor is at $4M this year. Who cares if he is back next year. Elam for Taylor straight up.

Hopkins went 7 for 65 in a TEN loss. Maybe he could have helped but that ship has sailed.
