  1. It has happened before. Khatami was a reformist. Could not get anything done, though, since the parliament was permanently filled with hardliners (and Khatami's supporters/fellow reformers were blocked from running for office at those parliamentary elections).
  2. The Iranian system has a whole load of candidates, and then relies on a second round to decide from the top two candidates left to choose from. The last election the guy had under 20% of the votes in the first round, seeing how he pissed off so many people in the intervening years I can not possibly see how that suddenly rose to over 65% to avoid the second round entirely. And somehow he managed to poll stupid numbers in his main opponents home city, where the level of support for Mousavi has been consistantly very high. It's bollocks, and a continuation of the repulsive dictatorship which is the current theocratic government there.
  3. What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison? You can't wash your hands in a buffalo.
  4. I remember watching an interview with a ranger vet who said it annoyed him (read really pissed him off) that people thought the mission was a failure and the guns were nowhere to be found. The officers (not the men) knew the guns had been moved beforehand and pointe du hoc was still considered a necessary objective. To assault those cliffs and achieve all their objectives was an awesome feat by the Rangers, one of the most compelling stories of the largest invasion in history.
  5. Whenever somebody comes up with a factoid like that I always go look it up out of curiosity. Apparently a horse can peak, for a few seconds, at almost 15 HP, however for sustained power 1 HP is a bit optimistic for a horse beyond a few minutes. Oh, at the Amish joke.
  6. Well, depends on the statistics you use. The ones favoured by airlines are measured by fatal accidents by distance, rather than accidents by number of trips. The accidents per trip tips the balance heavily in favour of the drive to the airport...
  7. All true. (Although I will point out that Stalin's early education was at a church school and he was at a seminary training to become a priest until being expelled for not being able to pay the fees...)
  8. Saw a nice graphic of the weather system/storm, and it's huge. It looks like the plane may have changed course to try to avoid the worst of it. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/8079122.stm
  9. Sounds like something pretty catastophic, probably the plane was hit by more than one thing going wrong in very quick succession, but it is rare for planes to just drop out of the sky like this, whatever the conditions. Taking off and landing, on the other hand, are where things fairly regularly go breasts up.
  10. Planes are hit by lightning all the time. Normally it is no biggie. So lightning may have contributed to the crash but it is unlikely to be the sole cause. So thunderstorms are not normally a major problem.

  12. “In my opinion, sir, any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed.” “If it hadn’t been for those damned Yanks we could have kept the war going for another 10 years.” "People are less likely to shoot at you if you smile at them." 'Fighting' (or 'Mad') Jack Churchill, WW2 Commando 'When people say to me, you know, were you in this? Were you in that? Did you work in this? Did you work in that? I always used to say 'Can you keep a secret?' And they would say 'Yes, yes' and I would say "So can I."' Christopher Lee, Actor and member of the SOE
  13. Peters Graded at over 90%. It is in the comments after the article and I mentioned it earlier in the thread.
  14. To those asking about the other Bills lineman, it was Peters, and he graded at over 90. If you look at the comments after the article the author states this.
  15. Thanks for this, I'd forgotten how good Drop the Dead Donkey was. Now I might have to go out and buy some DVDs...
  16. Hatton WAS a pretty good fighter. But is hardly the poster boy for staying in shape. He eats poorly and drinks like a fish, continually becoming a walking blob between fights and then has to loose all the weight for each fight. After a decade+ of abusing his body his age has caught up with him. Once he might have had an outside chance of winning fights like these, but no longer.
  17. Jar Jar Jauron does have a ring to it...
  18. Great. So I'm going to be knackered most Mondays when I get to work...stupid time zone differences...
  19. Three years ago ('06): 1 (8) - Donte Whitner, S = B- 1 (26) - John McCargo, DT = D 3 (70) - Ashton Youboty, CB = B+ 4 (105) - Ko Simpson, S = C 5 (134) - Kyle Williams, DT = B+ 5 (143) - Brad Butler, OL = A 6 (178) - Keith Ellison, LB = B+ 7 (216) - Terrance Pennington, OT = C 7 (248) - Aaron Merz, G = C Overall a solid B. Simpson failing to live up to his earlier promise and McCargo (apparently) getting fat and lazy drag this one down. Who knows, maybe the near trade and surgery will light a fire under him. Or maybe not. Two years ago ('07) 1 (12) - Marshawn Lynch, RB = B+ 2 (34) - Paul Posluszny, LB = B 3 (92) - Trent Edwards, QB = A- 4 (111) - Dwayne Wright, RB = D 6 (184) - John Wendling, S = C 7 (222) - Derek Schouman, TE= C 7 (239) - C.J. Ah You, DE = F Another B. Good first three picks, but then falls away
  20. DE: Kelsay - expensive and we are already trying to move him. LB: Bowen - injury has hurt his chances CB: Lankster or Harris. Can't see either of the other two going anywhere. Youboty might be on the boil if the injury proves bad, but he was playing really well before he was hurt. WR: Sam. Parrish if we can make a trade, otherwise Jenkins. S: Simpson. Chance to stick appears to have gone downhill.
  21. 'House' Ballard (now there was a late round pick who came through for uis - 11th I think) and either Davis or Parker. Great line. Also Devlin in the first couple of Kelly's years was not too shabby either... (Of course I am sure that someone will come on here and tell us that X, Y, and/or Z were stiffs and I am an idiot for even bringing their names up...)
  22. 4.56 is...
  23. Now, personally speaking, this would be amazing... Mind you if I got tickets it would probably be the Pats*, Fish or somebody else I do not like very much...
  24. Ditto. Loved Deadwood...
