The ref turning into Terry Crews on steroids and slapping the ball without even checking alignment was insanity. The refs in the 49ers game looked criminally negligent by comparison considering it took them 10 seconds for a spike only after a gain of 10 yards.

Dak Prescott out here wondering why he couldn't get a ref like that

  3. This reminds me a bit of the situation McD faced with 13 seconds. Do you go for a kick short of the EZ to take a few seconds off the clock, risking a big return, or do you just take the touchback?

The answer is it doesn't matter.

You have a 99% chance to win either way.

Thibodo'h jumped offside, Zach Wilson made 2 great throws, the Jets got an ENORMOUS assist from the refs with 'spotting' the ball, and the rest as they say is history.

  4. The Bengals are having an interesting season.

Offensively they've had 2 great, 1 mediocre, and 4 awful games.

Defensively has been great the whole year outside of an inexplicable pounding in Tennessee.

Obviously they are trending in a better direction than the Bills with those 2 great offensive games coming in the last 3 weeks. One of those was against the Cardinals (possibly the worst team in the league) and a suddenly reeling 49ers team.

The Bills have avenged their last 2 playoff losses to KC with regular season wins at KC. I think we'll do the same to the Bengals this year with our offense finally hitting high gear again.

McDermott is one of the most aggressive coaches in the NFL on 4th down historically. We punted 4 times from midfield. We would have went for it if our defense wasn't completely shutting down the TB offense.

It took an unbelievably unlucky series of events just for the Bucs to have a shot at a hail Mary.

At any point yesterday did you feel like we were going to lose that game? We were in control.

McD skews the stats on his 4th down decisions by taking delay of game penalties in situations that we should really be going for it.

4th and 2 from the TB 44 is just about the perfect scenario to go for it. McD takes a delay of game penalty and now it's 4th and 7 from the 49. The 4th down models only look at the actual play (4th and 7) and determines he made the correct decision to punt.

For OP's point, I agree this game was overall very similar to the Pats game for the offense if we average out what happened over the course of the game. Last week the offense started slow and finished strong, this week we started strong and finished slow (exacerbated by McD's cowardice on 4th downs).

The offense played well enough to win both games even if they were not dominant. The DEF was much better this week

Actually, the Panthers have done this a few times this year. They have pulled Bryce Young and let Andy Freaking Dalton come in for the QB sneak a few times. Rumor has it that they view Young as too small and not powerful enough to execute the play himself 😂

Didn't we used to sub in EJ Manuel to do hard counts and sometimes QB sneaks ?

Couldnt be happier this is happening to Haslam.

At least this puts the whole "guaranteed contract" argument to rest.

Kirk Cousins has had a fully guaranteed contract for years and I doubt the Vikings have any regrets about that.

Also, medically cleared to play doesn't necessarily mean he SHOULD be playing.

Dawson Knox was medically cleared to play the last 2 weeks and was a detriment to the team. That's just from the team perspective. No idea what it was costing him personally/professional in both the short and long term to play through that.

Edit: It's more than a little ironic to call a guy that grew up to a single mom on welfare a "trust fund baby"

  8. I'm a ref complainer, but I'll stand by that Bucs game being the worst and most lopsided officiating against the Bills in the McD era.

They were bad all night but the end of that game was really something. The refs let the Bucs hogtie Diggs on our 3rd down pass to the end zone at the end of regulation with no call. Only to follow that up in OT by calling DPI on Wallace when Brady underthrew Evans by 5 yards. Evans bear hugged Wallace so he couldn't turn around and the call goes against Wallace.

He actually HAS been a pretty high percentage catch guy the last 2 seasons, that's my whole point!  The first 2 years, it was low 50% area.  The last 2 years has been at 69% and 73.5%.  That's Kelce, Kittle, Andrews, etc territory and in some years better than them.  People keep trying to say he drops the ball but they simply are maintaining an initial bias from their first opinion of him that no longer exists.  This would be like people saying Allen doesn't complete a high percentage of his passes and isn't very accurate based on his first 2 years.

Knox is an interesting case study. From a catching perspective he was below replacement level his first 2 seasons. Then in years 3 and 4 he improved dramatically to being one of the best in the league. I really thought he had worked the drops out of his system.

Now in year 5 he's back to being as bad (or even worse) as he was earlier in his career. He leads the league in TE drops despite not having many targets. Can we blame his poor performance this season on the injury? Is the 'real' Dawson Knox the guy we saw in years 1+2 that couldn't hold onto the ball? Is this just bad luck from a small sample size?

This would be like if Allen suddenly dropped back to a sub 60% completion rate.

  10. The Bills offense scored 3.125 points per possession (I'm not counting the end of either half as a possession).

If my math is correct that's the 4th best offensive performance of the week trailing behind BAL, PHI, and NE.

Our defense easily had the 2nd worst performance of the week (at least we were better than DET).

So why are people blaming the offense?

    1) The QB (and therefore offense) always gets too much credit and blame for wins/losses

    2) Our offense has been sputtering in the last 3 games relative to putting up a perfect game vs Dolphins in week4

    3) Injuries on DEF changed our expectations and we now think that as long as we're not allowing a TD every single drive the DEF is doing their job

    4) Our DEF minded head coach places the blame on the offense

I don't think Beane trades him.  I believe it's the Edmunds situation again.  He leaves via free agency and Bills get a comp pick.  Free agent market for WRs has gone crazy the last few years.  Could be a decent pick.

    Absolutely this.

Should be a 3rd round pick (or a 4th at worst) unless Beane murders the comp pick formula. Hopefully we see a repeat of the Jaguars throwing stupid money at non top tier WRs.

Umm to win Sunday they needed to score 30 points..  the Pats got 29

Well you see, if the offense had been putting together 10 minute TD drives on every single possession than the DEF would've been on the field for 1-2 fewer possessions and only allowed 22 points to the worst offense in the NFL.

Wow. When did Knox become hated around here? He has four drops on the season. Yes, that’s most in the NFL for TEs. By one. Here are some guys with 3:

    Mark Andrews

    Sam Laporta

    TJ Hockenson

    Evan Ingram.

    Even Mr. Swift has two.

I suppose those fans would also be happy if their starting TE needed surgery.

WTF is wrong with this place?

Dawson has twice as many drops as Kelce on half as many targets. Kelce has 5x the yards in 1 fewer games.

Obviously it's not fair to compare Knox to the GOAT TE, but he's had a disaster of a season so far.

Knox is paid to be a top 10 TE and his play isn't even in the top 30.

I'll never be happy that a Bills player is injured, but it's easy to make the argument we'll be better with Knox out of the lineup

I actually put the blame at the feet of Allen for the Dorsey situation.  This team has acquiesced to Allen's wishes on OC and the Knox contract.  Ultimately it was McD and Beane's call... but Allen was the guy endorsing Ken Dorsey for OC.

I am also beginning to wonder if Allen's reputation around not putting many hours into film study has more truth to it than we had originally thought at the start of the season.  Seems like he is trying to rely solely on talent and not picking apart the weaknesses of his opponents.

McD and his staff are squarely responsible for the lack of preparation the last three weeks.  The London game in particular was just another example of McD not preparing his team to play in unusual circumstances - see the Tennessee COVID game, for instance.  It feels like the Legend of the Game needs to talk to the players because it certainly doesn't seem like there isn't any other place they'd rather be than "right here, right now!".

I know Allen endorsed Dorsey for OC, but I feel like it's revisionist history to say that was the primary reason he was hired. Everyone in the organization was ok with Dorsey being promoted. It's not like we were holding open interviews and Dorsey was some dark-horse candidate that we brought in because of Josh.

McBeane are loyal, to a fault, and tend to go back to players (or coaches) they are familiar with. How many times have they tapped the Carolina Panthers connection ? Do you think Josh was whispering in their ear to sign Josh Norman to the PS?

Josh and Dawson are friends, but I don't know how much of an impact that had on his contract. A bad contract for Knox fits the McBeane MO perfectly.

I’ve also never seen a kick move like that from just the kicker hitting a knuckleball or whatever you wanna call it. There were winds of 15-20mph during the game but I don’t think we can be certain either way without seeing the goalpost flags in a replay .

That was a weird kick for sure.

Watching it again I think Bass just sliced the heck out of it.

The streamers on the goal posts were barely moving, and I don't see the refs pants moving either. If it was the wind it would have to be the flukiest burst of wind in history to only effect the path the kick was on and nothing else. Doesn't look like a defender tipped it either.

6 yesterday, out of 60 total D snaps

Wasn't sure whether someone had provided it.

No wonder why I didn't notice him!

If he's THAT limited from the injury recovery, why are we wasting a roster spot on him? We should've left him on IR...

Imagine if we had any other QB other than Josh (or Mahomes) yesterday. We would have given up like 10 sacks.

I don't know how people can watch our O-line get caved in play after play and think Allen only had an average game.

Joe Burrow behind this O-line would've been sacked a dozen times on his way to 50 yards passing and no points scored for the entire game.

The offense had 1 turnover (I'm not counting the final play fumble) and 1 punt against a very good defense. I'd call that a pretty good outing

The offense and special teams did put the defense on short fields in the first half. The Bills just needed one or two more big plays to end the game and they couldn’t come up with it. Just a really frustrating loss as neither the defense or offense set a tone consistently

While that is technically true I feel like it doesn't tell the whole story.

The only turnover by our offense turned into a 1st down for the Patriots from our 45 yard line. We allowed them to slice through our defense for a TD.

The long punt return gave the Patriots a 1st down on our 46 yard line. Our DEF got shredded and let them drive down to the 6 yard line before settling for a 24 yard FG.

Those were NOT good defensive drives, even when you account for the short fields.
