Glad Ty is back as #3 RB.  Also a KO return option.

Agree.  He runs hard and caught everything thrown at him last year.  Good RB#3.  Should get some extra carries and catches compared to last year.

I think a physical Wideout is the real need. Doesn't necessarily have to be a true #1, just the ability to go get the ball in 50/50 situations.

I would go along with one of those.

People look at the moves we made and think that meant we were going to be active early in FA. The truth is we had to make those moves just to be able to get under the cap and make moves to fill the starting holes we had and the 20+ bodies that we were moving on from.

Things like only getting 16.5 instead of 24 out of Josh's restructure and just getting 2.5 on a Douglas restructure instead of an extension hampered us more and neutralized Von's unexpected move. Other things like an Oliver restructure or a Taron Johnson extension also haven't been done. So we're effectively nowhere right now until we do.

We were never going to be major players in the first couple days of FA. As you said, patience is key right now. We were always going to play things much like we did last year. Trying to get the best of what's left after the spending spree - on good prices.

Yep.  Only need to look at Spotrac to see the money is almost gone.

Glad we aren't jumping on this ridiculous WR market, and I hope Beane doesn't get desperate and buckle.

People are freaking out about Noah Brown and Darnell Mooney.  Last year the names were Jakobi Meyers and Parris Campbell.

These guys are mediocre complimentary pieces who need to be 4th-5th in the target hierarchy.  Maybe $2-3 million per year.  Not $8-10 million.

Stefon Diggs is our #1 target.  Dalton Kincaid is #2.  Khalil Shakir should be #3.  We still have Dawson Knox and James Cook.  I get the need to add another receiver.  But everyone needs to calm down.

Agree.  Beane will draft a WR high and maybe add a vet after June 1st.  If no vet, maybe a flyer on a Day 3 WR/PR if someone falls on their board.

Beane has no real money to do anything big.

My guess is they're being patient there. The WR market has been pretty slow, as teams are looking at this year's Draft crop and are hesitant to pull the trigger on big price tags when they can find someone in the Draft that represents equal or greater talent.

I don't see us paying for someone that's going to cost starting WR money. You don't pay that unless you're planning on them starting and they probably aren't going to come here unless that's guaranteed. I don't think we want to do that as the plan is for that to be our 1st Round pick.

We're probably looking at guys like Josh Reynolds, DJ Chark, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, K.J. Osborn, Van Jefferson, or Mecole Hardman. Guys that will come at an Outside WR3 price tag that you feel comfortable starting if the Rookie takes a little while to get his feet under him.

He's probably waiting for that market to play itself out a little bit as to get a good price on someone like that.

I agree.  With the big WR class it will also open up a team willing to trade a vet WR (or even outright cuts).  Beane can then sign a vet

with Tre's cap.  It's a tight cap year and Bills fans have to be patient.

Really interesting signing.  I guess that means the Spector is going to be the primary LB on Special Teams. I suppose he is Milano health insurance?

I guess we can scratch LB depth off the draft list.

If someone high on their board falls into Day 3, I don't think this signing will affect them drafting another LB.

That's what these insurance type UFA signing are about.

I just found this latest Cap # according to overthecap.com the Bills have close to $12 million for their 2024 drafted rookie contracts.  I did not know we had that much set aside this year.  So at least that number is promising.  Some teams don't even have $10 mil set aside, there were 11 teams under $10mil, some teams with all their draft picks like Philly and the 49ers have with all their comp picks only have $12 mil or less.  So much for having all those picks.  A lot of them are going to be traded away.  Kind of Funny the Browns don't even have $5 mil set aside for rookie contracts.

The rookies will cost about $3M in "additional" cap space from where they are now.

  8. He signed a vet minimum contract with the Eagles last year.  Was released and then signed to their PS.

Was signed to the 53 a week later.  I expect the same here in Buffalo.

It's a guy who will fight for a depth LB spot.  I don't see a problem.

I don’t know if we will sign a WR (we should along with a draft pick) but I don’t think this is the year we are going to be able to worry about comp picks. With the number of guys we released we need to fill out the roster and we will likely need to sign more guys than we lose as FA. Not building a complete roster this year to potentially get a 5th round next year is not worth it

Last year Beane signed a bunch of free agents at the $1.7M cost, which was under the amount that calculated out as FA gains for

compensatory pick using the formula.  I expect a number of those signing again this year.  Beane still might go for a bigger $ FA,

but only if it fits what he is doing.

I was annoyed at spotrac, so I did a cap calculation with 6 million allocated to Jones and 1.5 to Lewis, but without deducting for Dawkins and Knox and we are approximately 5 million over.  Given that calculation and assuming Knox and Dawkins save us at least $6 million we are probably good unless we sign someone else.  Spotrac estimates over 11 million for our draft picks, but only a 6.7 million cap hit in our top 51.  Not sure when that cap has to be available.

The $6.7M is the cap hit for the rookies.  Each one will replace a guy already on the Top 51.  Figure $0.9M for the top 4 picks.

That's a total of $3.6M offset from the $6.7.  The rookie class when the dust settles will cost a little less than $3M in new cap needed.

We can’t be done in FA though whether it’s now or later as we still have too many holes to fill that we aren’t filling with 11 draft picks, which is probably less than 11 as I expect Beane to makes some moves around the draft.

So something has to be off on the latest numbers in the thread or something more coming because we don’t seem to have enough cap room to get through both FA and the draft right now, even with Tre’s $10M coming after June 1st.

Or maybe I’m missing something.  I’m just trying to figure out where the extra cap space is coming from since they seemed to have left some cap space on the table with Allens restructure.

Like I said, Beane will restructure the players he has left that are eligible when he needs it.  He can agree to a contract with a FA player

and do the restructure at the same time.  He doesn't need to free the money up first.  He did the same thing last season.

He will get a reworked deal if he pushes for it and he has the leverage to do it,  you don't want Josh unhappy.   The one they should have said no to was the last extension for Diggs because Hill got a big deal.

Exactly.  If Josh does that, they will have to work an early extension.  I don't think Josh will force Beane to do that.

If Josh is OK with everything, they will keep doing what they are doing until after the 2026 season.

Something’s gotta be off with the cap calculation or there are still some more moves still coming because we can’t field a full team right now cap wise according to the cap numbers last updated in this thread.  We wouldn’t even be able to sign any rookies, let alone fill out the rest of the roster.

We have to wait for all the details, but it looks like Beane is just under the cap with everything that happened up to now.

Beane IMO is not going to restructure other player until he needs the money.  All the future guys under $1M don't really count against

the Top 51 and the rookies will total around $3M tops.  Nothing to worry about there.

I wasn't expecting any big FA signings but you never know with Beane but he will get Tre Whites $10M June 1st.  So, we got a long wait until

we see who is exactly coming to camp.  I recommend patience!  LOL.

Not for long.  I’d imagine he’ll get a new contract rather soon like next offseason.

I know a Josh signing an extension next year seems to be the talk on the board, but I don't see why it needs to be.

He is signed through the 2028 season with a current cap hit that year of $45M.

Beane could easily just restructure $20M or so again next year.

I see Josh getting the extension at the end of the 2026 season.  He would have $15M-$20M in void year money then.

That's a good time for a new contract.  Heck, Mahomes already has way more than that at the end of his contract.

  15. I'm fine with Beane not taking every dollar out of Josh's contract.  If he HAS to later, he can go back to the well.

KC is doing the same with Mahomes.  Mahomes has had $36M and $37M cap hits the last 2 years.

    Floyd doesn’t count.

Why not?  Because of the "void years"?

    https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2023/6/12/23758041/explaining-how-the-nfl-works-part-18-the-compensatory-formula-free-agents-draft-picks-steelers

The first step is to determine if a player who signed with a new team is a CFA. First, they must be an unrestricted free agent and not a street free agent. Second, they could not be a player who potentially had more years under contract with the team. If there was a team option that was not exercised, or at any point in their contract a player renegotiated their deal for fewer years, they are not eligible to be a CFAs. If there are void years in a players contract, these do not preclude the player from being a CFA.
