Actually I think he legitimately thinks he can still play and this new deal gives him the opportunity to earn more than what he was scheduled to earn.

Think about it folks... you can almost guarantee that 2 of the "hard to reach incentives" put in his contract are tackles and sacks.

That means if he gets more tackles than 2023, he reaches that incentive and earns more.

That wouldn't be hard considering he had 3 tackles

If he gets more sacks than in 2023, he reaches that incentive and earns more.

That wouldn't be hard considering he had 0 sacks.

My bet is another incentive will be games played or active, and considering he started the season on PUP, that might not be hard for him, either.

So yes, this is a solid for Buffalo, but he may legitimately believe he's about to earn more than he was scheduled... and all of that money goes on next year's CAP.

Come on, the incentive won't be on last year's production.

    Why didn’t we keep Bates?

In Bates 5 seasons in Buffalo, he has had 203 snaps at Center.  That's a little over 3 games.

I think us fans penciled him in as "heir apparent" Center too quickly.

They know what they had with Baters at Center.

The only thing I don't understand is why the post-6/1 designation? We won't be able to use that $10M until after FA has dried up, unless the plan is to roll it over to 2025.

That being said I am really happy that Beane went this route. I did not think he had it in him.

If you take Tre's $10M post June savings and throw that on Von Miller's Dead cap, Von's outright cut saves about $1.5M this year and it's over.

    It's a possibility.

This move puzzles me a bit.  The cap savings this year is minimal, however in 2025 I believe the cap savings is over $5m.

Bates I thought all along was going to be given pole position on being Morse’s replacement and provided valuable depth.   I’m not sure a 5th rounder and some cap savings is enough of a trade off.

Beane and McD must really like who we have on the roster that can replace what Bates was providing.

Bates, in his 5 years in Buffalo had 1436 snaps and only 203 at Center.  I personally never understood how fans had him as a Mitch Morse

replacement level player at the Center position.  He performed decently but the coaches know more about what his effectiveness

would be at Center better than me.

Beane hopefully takes a couple of these Day 3 picks and get a true college center that can take over when Morse hangs them up.

Douglas isn’t being released.  If he isn’t going to return, he is going to be traded.  He is under contract for next year and we should get at least the 3rd we traded for him back.

That said, I think he’ll be back.  You don’t trade for a guy with term, who then played very well for you, then just dump him on the side of the road.

Odds favor an extension, but maybe both sides are having trouble getting to a meeting of the minds on $ and term.

People are reading to much into Beane usage of past tense.  He was describing how Douglas played last season.  He was also describing meeting him last year.  Both of those events are in the past. Should have said he was looking forward to having him next season? Maybe, but since when does Beane care about the niceties?

This could drag on for a while. Beane doesn’t have do anything with Douglas.  Rasul is under contract.  There is no cap cost to release or trade him.  With the higher cap Beane may not have the urgency to extend Douglas as we all originally thought.  Beane may now have the luxury of waiting to see how White recovers and/or how Elam progresses in the off-season workouts.

Best explanation of the Douglas situation that I have read so far.  Thank you.

I would add that if anything, Beane probably had a long term $ number in mind for the extension BUT after Douglas's play that number may

have gone up significantly.  If it has it means his trade value (3rd and 5th) has gone up or at least remains the same.  This talk of Beane

    cutting him is insane.

If Beane thinks he may have to deal off Douglas, he may have multiple teams interested.  It didn't take me long to look at this year's 3rd

round early picks to see a team like the Cardinals needing a vet CB.  Dealing pick #91 and getting back an early 3rd round pick is a net plus.

It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens.

41 mill over instead of 51, so only an 10 mill difference for us, which somehow I am missing how the cap going up by 13 mill, only nets us 8 mill?

    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/?ref=trending-pages

The Bills were way over $51M after they made the void year moves going to Dead Cap.  Those players had to be replaced with others to get

back to the 51 players.  That is where the discrepancy comes from.

  7. The New Orleans Saints do not have a good football team.

They are in a weak division and haven't made the playoffs since Brees left (3 years).

They are 25-26 in the last 3 years (in that weak division) and should have totally reset in 2021.

    You reap what you sow.

I still laugh when fans think their "blueprint" is in any way worth emulating.

I think cash-to-cap is an intriguing idea though transitioning to it would be painful.

Yeah, most teams restructure contracts.  Most teams are NOT sitting $55 million over the cap (using the OTC figure) and forced to restructure just to get under the cap even with 22 FAs no longer under contract.

The Chief, in contrast, won a SB and are $15 million under the cap.  They have the 2nd least dead money ($457,000) in the league because they don't continually kick the can down the road.

How do we catch up to their roster strength when they have $70 million more to spend?

KC has done a good job with the cap but don't let these current numbers hide what is in front of them.

They have some big $ guys on UFA right now.  Jones, Sneed, Danna and Gay to name a few.

If those guys were under contract the numbers would be drastically different.

KC did a mini-reset the year they let Hill go and got in a good cap situation while still dressing a good team.

I'm in the group thinking the Bills need to reset this year.

Gun violence is a real problem. So are car accidents. So is heroin overdose. These are the risks of living in a free country, which we accepted a couple hundred years ago. Rights can always be taken away to in theory reduce the chance of tragic untimely death, but personally I'm happy to live in a free country and accept these risks.

The risk of any individual being killed in a shooting like this is exceedingly rare. I see people say things like "I'm now scared to go to any public gathering." You're free to have these feelings, but they aren't rational. You're much much much more likely to be killed while commuting to the public gathering than at the public gathering. You're more likely to die while showering to get ready to go out. Don't let these tragic events consume you.

I tend to agree with your points.  Although, I am an adult (actually becoming an old man).  This "gun violence" is here to stay and there is

nothing much that can be done about it in today's world.

I will say that the destruction of gun violence doesn't end with the victim.  At an event like this (and these crazy school shootings) causes

a lot of parents to try to explain to young kids WHY it has to be the way it is.  I know I wouldn't want to be in that situation.  I'll take it a step

further and say I'm glad I didn't have to go through something like that when I was a child.

Gun violence, road rage, crippling addiction, sexual abuse, among all the other destructive traits, are too prevalent in today's world.

I'll admit I feel a little sad that I have become numb to it all.

This is what my gut tells me will happen. And it's a good move for both parties.

Tre won't likely see big bucks as a FA. And if he comes back and is able to play I don't know if he's better than Douglas or Benford at this stage of his career. He's likely the #3 boundary CB. The one caveat here is IF he were to come back and IF he's healthy enough to be the #2 CB...a case could be made for the Bills to start the Benford to safety transition they talked about last off season.

That would also IMO depend on Elam taking steps forward and possibly Dane Jackson returning as experienced depth. So a lot in play for a move like this.

Agree.  It almost amounts to the pay cut being a "prove your still worth elite money" deal.

I think Tre would take it and not feel bad about it.

  11. 2024 is the final hope for the Jets with Aaron.  He only has a $17M hit.

2025 he has a $51.5M hit followed by a void year $35M hit in 2026.

Jets have 10 other players with void year hits coming this year and in 2025.

It's all in for them this season and if they end up with only 8 or 9 wins the draft won't help them either.

UFA this March will be interesting in players both coming and going.

Arizona is taking marvin harrison jr at 4 barring something crazy.  Depending on what happens with higgins i can see 18 being the last wr taken before the Bills pick.  It's going to be an interesting game of chicken between buffalo and kc as I think they will both be targeting a wr.

I was myopic and forgot their #4.  I agree with the KC thing.

I agree that he won’t see the end of his contract. Everybody in the building knows it.

But restructuring basically guarantees we get close..

Out of pocket so keeping this simple with pre-June cuts. 2024 is the only time

cutting/trading Diggs hurt us currently. Restructuring ties the teams hands and kicks the can down the road. The current situation is below. I think (ouch) a restructure ties us together until 2026.

    2024: -$3M net cap

    2025:  $5M

    2026:  $15M

    2027:  $18M

I wouldn't restructure him again.  You watch how many fans on this board will want to do that.

I'm not sure what Beane decides on this issue, I give it a 50/50 shot on one more restructure.

  14. 2 minutes ago, DrDawkinstein said:

We do NOT need a #2 WR.

We need a new #1 who pushes Diggs down to #2. That is the best way to keep Diggs here and afford to let him play out his contract (which we'll need to do on a dead money basis).

Then as Diggs' contract expires in 4 years, we still have the new #1 on a 5th year option cheap before having to shift Stef's money to the #1's extension.

I agree Beane needs to go for the new WR1 this year.  I don't agree with Diggs sticking around for the end of his contract.

His cost (before they restructure probably one more time) is $28.4M in 2026.  Current dead cap that year is $13.4M.

    Could be gone that year.

NO WAY he is playing for $22M+ in 2027 when he is 34 years old with a $4.5M dead cap.

This might be the most mindless cap breakdown I've ever seen. He's essentially just reading Spotrac to you. Every single team in the league can create cap space by restructuring 6 or 7 players, and then releasing another 10 players and pretending their replacements will cost nothing. If anyone is serious about learning more about cap management this is the last video you want to watch. It's nonsensical comfort food.

Come on, just keep doing what the New Orleans Saints have been doing.  You know that team who has missed the playoffs 3 straight

years (in a weak division) and the same team that has won 1 playoff game in the last 5 years!

    It's brilliant.

As the de facto janitor, I was really not looking forward to breaking out the mop after having the season end in such a brutal fashion. Wading through the trolling, insults and crusading and trying to moderate it all was the last thing on this planet I wanted to deal with after that game. But as I have been reading around the board, I'm totally blown away to see the class and character with which 95% of this community has reacted to having their hearts ripped out again. Much respect to this community and the strength and dignity which runs through it.

Y'all have built something really nice here and as sad as I am about the Bills, I'm just as happy with what you've created for yourselves. And maybe at the end of the day, that's what's more important.

Wouldn't mind you pinning this for a bit for guests and visitors (some fans who I'd like to invite to this board), so they see the good in it.

    Just a thought.

Valid point. He's cherry picking for sure. However, it's extremely disappointing that the Bills have lost three straight divisional round playoffs games. Two of which were at home.

Something has to change because I don't think any Bills fans are happy with this.

With respect, I ask what's going to be different year? What makes you think the Bills will advance to at least the AFC Championship game?

Miami gave the Bills all they could handle. Cinci with a healthy Burrow seems to be a poor matchup for Buffalo. KC seemingly owns the Bills.

I expect another playoff appearance for Buffalo but beyond that I have some serious doubts.

    Am I on that list?

I don't know what will happen this offseason.  I started a thread about it.  I'm just a fan with my feelings.  It's always tough when you are

the one who has to make the decisions.

I'll watch what happens, give my opinion and watch the games next season.  I've been doing that for a long, long, long time.

2 minutes ago, Fan in Chicago said:

Imo, Beane's biggest offseason mistake was to not sign DHop. He just had to do the required capology to make the $$s work.

If we had him, I truly believe this season would have gone much differently and we would be very much alive.

While I would have been fine with that, I admit I wasn't one of you guys "pounding the table" for it.

After seeing the way the season ended with the WR situation, I'm thinking I was wrong.
