I think the Bills carried 5 WR's last year.  A 6th could make it but it will have to be about teams

If they keep 6 WRs the math will work out that 1 will not dress most weeks.

That WR could have more WR potential than ST worth.

I agree that WR5 needs to be a ST guy.

The issue on this is outside of Hollins and Isabella none of these guys are going to be on ST and that's what you ask your back end guys to do.

Hollins is a back-end guy.  FWIW Claypoole took over 100 snaps on ST for Miami last season in half a season.

Guys like Shorter and Shavers need to work on the ST craft.  It's not rocket science.

You really think Beane was ever going to sign Chark or OBJ?  We've seen how much he loves bargain bin shopping for WRs.

Claypool and Mack Hollins are this year's Sheffield and Harty.

Beane probably didn't want to sign OBJ, especially for the money he just signed for.

Chark I believe was considered but we won't know now.  Beane can't do nothing bigger than what he has done until after June 1st.

I was responding to the previous poster who said Ben was garbage at the time.  Then you also responded.

But, yes, he had 4900 in 2014--but this was 1 of only 2 career seasons over 4500 yards---clearly outlier seasons so their comparison isn't particularly noteworthy.   You could have pointed out that only 2 years before Claypool arrived, Ben had his career best season (his 15th!).  7550 yards, 55 TDs over 2 seasons--after 18 years--that's better than his career season average (even not counting his 2 game 2019). That's solid play.

Ben was never the same after his 2019 shoulder injury.

  5. Samuel

    Shakir

    Coleman

I'm starting to get some hope that at least one (maybe two) of these other guys can rejuvenate themselves to push the above 3 for playing time.

    Hamler

    Hollins

    Claypoole

    Cephus

    Shorter

    Shavers

    Isabella

    Thompson

    The UDFAs

Each one, on their own, has the odds against them.  But compared to other years, there is some inherent talent with these guys.

The WR camp battles could get interesting.

There is also a chance that someone else after June 1st joins the "longshots".

He had 3800 (16th) yards and 33 TDs (tied for 7th) on a 12-3 team in 2020.  Why would that prompt retirement?  How is that "garbage" QB play?

    Try again...

LOL, I'll try again.  First, I didn't say Big Ben's play was "garbage", so don't insinuate I did.

Ben's play was falling off his last season.  Even in 2020 when he had the 3800 yards, he threw the ball 608 times.

In 2014 Ben threw the ball 608 times too.  He had 4,952 yards.

He wasn't the same QB at the end and everyone who watched football knows that was true.

Big Ben and Tua are "garbage"?

anyway, classic Beane off-season WR addition.....

Big Ben should have been retired during the Claypoole years in Pittsburgh.

It wasn't like Ben in his prime.

Claypoole had 9 games and 51 snaps in Miami as a TE.

I'm not expecting Claypoole to make the team............but he does have talent if he wants to change his ways.

I give it a one in three chance he changes his ways.

We normally carry 6 LB on the roster and bring 9 or so into camp

    That's NORMALLY.

    Check it out

    https://billswire.usatoday.com/lists/2023-buffalo-bills-53-man-roster-roster-cuts-brandon-beane-nfl/

People aren't always aware because Dodson and Matekevich primarly played teams and had been hanging out as depth 4-Ev-Ah

With Jones signing and the 1 UDFA that makes 8 so far.  Plus the rookie camp invitee.

You need camp bodies.  I'm not sure what some of these other posters are worried about.

Yeah, that's my thing. I don't believe he's going to be asked to run straight line deep routes very much. So how does Brady use him and what can they do to incorporate what he does do well. Out routes? Hook routes? I think he's going to feast in that 11-20 yard range...and I don't think anyone is going to out hustle or out work him to the ball.

That was always a big complaint I had with Gabe Davis. Seemed like far too often when a DB got position on him to make a play on the ball Gabe was a bit passive. Resulted it a fairly high INT% when targeted. I don't see that problem with Coleman.

For every 7.7 receptions Gabe gave up an interception to the defender.

Compare that to Kincaid, who gave up an interception to the defender once every 36.5 receptions.

These are receptions not targets, but I like this stat better.  It's more of the risk/reward if you are the QB.

I sure hope Coleman is more in line with Dalton!

    Safeties fixed.

PS I used the positions listed on Spotrac.  Williams is listed as a DE and Jonathan as a DT.  It doesn’t really change much as Jonathan is likely to make to the team and Williams is in a huge camp battle.

I'm sure by camp they will bring some real competition for Hamlin at Safety.

Assuming Van Pran-Granger doesn't win a starting spot, does position inflexibility create a numbers crunch for backup spots? Of course the team is saying they are going to work him at guard as well, but I haven't heard anyone outside of the team say anything that makes that seem likely. Could the Bills have to look at keeping an extra O-lineman in that case?

This "position-flexibility" is always better but not mandatory.  VPG is a Center and camp will show if he is the "heir apparent" Center in

the coaches mind, even if it takes another year to get there.  VPG could be the guy not dressing on game-day to start the season.

If a IOL goes down with a major injury they have options to move up a G from the PS.  The "flexibility" issue could be addressed by

dressing a player with both T and G depth.  That way VPG hones his skills until he starts.

If the coaches like VPG in camp, then they will know that McGovern is eventually moving back to G.  Of course, having him excel quickly

to take the starting C role is by far the best scenario.

  12. Even if Beane could have kept most of the veterans they would not be as good as last season.

This "transition" was needed however you want to categorize it.

Offense is the key this season.  Morse was good but getting pushed around too much.  The Diggs situation is what it is.

My 2 keys are the OL and Brady.  IF the Center play is good, I see another year of experience and consistency providing a chance for

superior OL play.  Giving Josh Allen more time will be a huge threat to opposing Ds.  A successful running game, when needed, is always a plus.

Brady has a full off-season to formulate his plan.  Good play designs and play sequencing will be the difference of just fighting for the playoffs.

    or being dominate.

Looking forward to seeing what happens!

    Go Bills.

  13. DJ Chark signed a one-year $5M contract with Carolina last season.

His stock did not rise.  I think he will sign for similar (or even less) money this season.

I'd feel better having him in camp.

I don't see a big-name WR trade coming to Buffalo.

    Top 4 WR rotation:

    Samuel

    Shakir

    Chark

    Coleman

The rest fighting for the other 2 roster spots would be good for me.

  14. It seems Elam is having a tough time with the zone work.  If that's true I find it hard for him to do that at Safety.

Big year for the guy, he has to find a spot somewhere, but I don't think it's Safety.

Hyde coming back for 1 more year on an incentive-based contract is intriguing.  He sure could help the rookie.

  15. I'm of the opinion that Brady can design some good plays for the type of talent he has on the team.

I seen a lot of good at the end of last season.

To be very good at the job of OC is calling the plays in the right sequence to set up the D to miss on a strategic play.

I'm hoping he shows that this year.

How many UDFA have made the Bills in the last 5 years?

I see the role of UDFAs as pushing the rookies and bubble players hard during camp.

The better the UDFA quality the better the camp competition.

Quality UDFAs on the PS is a plus too.

Every once in a while, a guy emerges who can make the team and contribute for a cheap cost.

These guys serve a purpose even if they don't become stars.

If Gore can show he is close to Ty Johnson he makes the team. The difference between Ty and Gore is 350K in cap. That is going to be important at the end of summer when getting under cap.  That is key for a RB3.

I hope so. Ty is such a JAG. If I can save 350k on that spot it is a no brainer for me.

Ty Johnson has a $667K dead cap if cut.  Ty has the inside track to make the team IMO.

The thing I like about Ty the most was his 7 for 7 receptions last season and I like that he runs hard.

The dead cap doesn't make him a lock so if he is beat out for the roster spot I wouldn't be upset.

I would like to know what DJ Chark has left, myself.  He was a legit "fast guy" coming out - 4.31 40-time.  He showed he can put up 1000+ yd season with "meh" QB like Minshew and Foles throwing to him.

He had some very bad luck with a broken ankle early in the season for 2021, and then an ankle injury early in 2022 that put him on IR.  500+ yard guy the last 2 seasons despite that and a rookie QB on a bad team in CAR last season.

    He's only 27.

On the other hand, if he still has it physically, it would be surprising he's still on the FA market, so IDK.

Chark is an interesting option and whether or not he is the guy I do believe Beane is bringing in a vet under 30 after June 1st.
