He will get a reworked deal if he pushes for it and he has the leverage to do it,  you don't want Josh unhappy.   The one they should have said no to was the last extension for Diggs because Hill got a big deal.

Exactly.  If Josh does that, they will have to work an early extension.  I don't think Josh will force Beane to do that.

If Josh is OK with everything, they will keep doing what they are doing until after the 2026 season.

Something’s gotta be off with the cap calculation or there are still some more moves still coming because we can’t field a full team right now cap wise according to the cap numbers last updated in this thread.  We wouldn’t even be able to sign any rookies, let alone fill out the rest of the roster.

We have to wait for all the details, but it looks like Beane is just under the cap with everything that happened up to now.

Beane IMO is not going to restructure other player until he needs the money.  All the future guys under $1M don't really count against

the Top 51 and the rookies will total around $3M tops.  Nothing to worry about there.

I wasn't expecting any big FA signings but you never know with Beane but he will get Tre Whites $10M June 1st.  So, we got a long wait until

we see who is exactly coming to camp.  I recommend patience!  LOL.

Not for long.  I’d imagine he’ll get a new contract rather soon like next offseason.

I know a Josh signing an extension next year seems to be the talk on the board, but I don't see why it needs to be.

He is signed through the 2028 season with a current cap hit that year of $45M.

Beane could easily just restructure $20M or so again next year.

I see Josh getting the extension at the end of the 2026 season.  He would have $15M-$20M in void year money then.

That's a good time for a new contract.  Heck, Mahomes already has way more than that at the end of his contract.

  4. I'm fine with Beane not taking every dollar out of Josh's contract.  If he HAS to later, he can go back to the well.

KC is doing the same with Mahomes.  Mahomes has had $36M and $37M cap hits the last 2 years.

    Floyd doesn’t count.

Why not?  Because of the "void years"?

    https://www.behindthesteelcurtain.com/2023/6/12/23758041/explaining-how-the-nfl-works-part-18-the-compensatory-formula-free-agents-draft-picks-steelers

The first step is to determine if a player who signed with a new team is a CFA. First, they must be an unrestricted free agent and not a street free agent. Second, they could not be a player who potentially had more years under contract with the team. If there was a team option that was not exercised, or at any point in their contract a player renegotiated their deal for fewer years, they are not eligible to be a CFAs. If there are void years in a players contract, these do not preclude the player from being a CFA.

In the shape we're in, I'd hope they aren't letting possible picks next year stop them from making acquisitions that can help the team now. We're not in a position roster wise to be focusing solely on mid round picks in a year.

I'm sure Beane wishes he had $30M in cap to spend, but he doesn't.  The comp pick discussion is driven by that fact.

If Beane sees a deal, he will do it.

I don’t know how anyone can hate this deal, he’s paid like a high end situational pass rusher and is young and can exceed the value of his deal. The Bills DE rotation without AJE was Groot and Von. Now adding back AJE the Bills can resign Shaq and draft a developmental player in the draft to round out the rotation.

I like the deal, hoping they can bring back D Jones and a couple of the older back end rotation players (Shaq at DE and then anyone of the following Poona Ford, Tim Settle or Jordan Phillips). That should then put them in a good position to just add 2 defensive linemen in the draft somewhere in rounds 2-5 to pad out the rotation and get younger.

Also, a chance a DL gets signed after June 1st when Tre's $10M cap clears.

For the record, here is the Groot, Floyd and AJE breakdown for the season.  The % is their total snaps.  Not a lot of tackles but missed out on a bunch of snaps as well.

    groot
    PD 4
    FF 1
    FR 1
    SK 5
    TKL 30
    53%

    floyd
    PD 1
    FF 1
    Tkl 21
    54%

    AJE
    PD 8
    FF 1
    FR 1
    Tkl 9
    36%

AJE had 6.5 sacks last year.  If he can keep his pace up with more snaps they will look to sign him long term IMO.

This is a "prove you can do it" contract.  I like it.  If he fails, they can drop him next year.

the one advantage it does bring is it makes existing contracts less expensive v. the cap.  So the money given to Allen, or someone else is now less as a cap %.  Having players under control is an advantage if you think the cap is going up.

Totally agree.  I should have added that.  I commented on Cousins signing by saying Josh is now 8th in AVV and that's without the now

nulled Wilson contract.  Some fans want Beane to re-do Josh's contract and that seems nuts to me.

No, post-6/1 designations allow the player to sign with another team right away. But Tre probably can't pass a physical right now so I doubt he will sign anywhere for at least a couple months.

    Absolutely.

Free agent opportunities aside, releasing a player in the spring and designating him a post-June 1 cut can be mutually beneficial for a player and his team. It allows the player to hit the market when potential suitors still have cap room and are still looking to add free agents,

Nah, he really doesn’t get beat often. In fact, the style of defense the Bills play lends itself for their defensive backs to rarely get beat. I mean, this is the NFL and QB’s are going to complete passes to receivers. However I can only think of a handful of plays that have left me dissatisfied with our defensive back play the past couple of seasons. Lewis not knocking the ball down and the long pass in Miami last season that Hamlin and Johnson covered come to mind.

Last year he had a QBR against him of 87 and a 4.5% missed tackle rating.  People act like his Venus de Milo.

I'm waiting to see what the contract actually looks like.

Looks like the cap increase sent a lot of contracts through the roof with inflation

I say it every year.  The cap increase does not give teams (our Bills) any kind of an advantage.  With the rookie and vet minimums going

up every year and the increases in contract $s, it's a wash.

One of the biggest ways to save on cap is drafting well.  It's a big year for Beane and his boys!

Is that up to four million with incentives…,

We have to wait.  It's agent numbers.  I'm going to say his 2024 cap hit will be $1.6M or so and he won't cost anything much at all to

cut in 2025.  I think that's ok for a 75% snap count ST player and a serviceable DB who can play multiple positions and familiar with the D.
