Travis should not have been shipped out of town to begin with.

First of all, I don't think Wade's only problem was a meddlesome owner -- he had other problems like hiring a baffoon for a special teams coach... with that being said, I think he was a much better coach than people give him credit for. Marty's playoff record includes some of the biggest choke jobs in recent memory, many of which occured when his team was at home and favored to win. I don't think it's necessarily a fair comparison, though it is something that cannot be ignored.

Actually all we got was peanuts... Flight was too short for a movie.

The game is A LOT different for running backs. Bear in mind the following: Marshall Faulk was traded to the Rams for a 2nd and a 5th. He was very young and in his prime. Travis Henry was traded to the Titans for a 3rd. He was recently removed from a Pro Bowl. Corey Dillon was traded to the Pats for a 2nd. Again, he was extremely productive and a top 8 back. If the Bills fetch a first rounder for Willis after the sub-par season he just had, I would be very very impressed.

This is my favorite one... "his playoff record" -- The guy has been a head coach for 5 seasons and took his team to the playoffs in 3 of those years. In Buffalo, he inherited a team that pretty much everyone dismissed as a rebuilding team. Not only did they start off 0-3, he managed to turn things around very quickly and made them a playoff contender. So he got to two playoff games and lost -- HE GOT THERE, didn't he? Not to mention both playoff games were on the road and were very close games... I wouldn't call him a choker by any sense of the imagination. In any case, I look forward to see what he can do in Dallas.

I also recall in an interview where RALPH admitted that he pushed for RJ to start. Thanks the the smartass (or rather cynical) remark...

Here's a link. For what it's worth, Wade has also told me himself that he wanted to keep Flutie in there and the entire coaching staff (including then QB coach Turk Schonert) was not high on Rob Johnson at that point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Flutie

I love Jauron as a head coach, don't get me wrong... and as I've said before, the QB inconsistency was due more to Ralph than the head coach. Ralph Wilson invested $25M in Rob Johnson and was impatient to see what the kid had, even though the team was winning with Flutie. Wade and the staff (and the entire team) wanted Flutie in there as the starter... Wade had his shortcomings, I just think that they were way overblown and he didn't get much credit for the good things he did.

He made a mistake in hiring Ronnie Jones, no doubt... but it certainly shouldn't overshadow all the good things he did as head coach. I would take him over GW, Mularkey and Jauron anyday.

Yep... he actually had a pretty crappy seat... very last row near the bathroom!

I was flying from Dallas to Indy and he was on my flight, along with his son Wesley. Very nice dude... reminisced about Buffalo and looks forward to the upcoming season. I told him that we Bills fans would love to have him back

Teams utilizing "unfair" franchise tag! official thread

I'll respond with a question of my own: why do people act as if we have unlimited $ to spend??? For a team like the Bills, who clearly cannot compete with their high revenue counterparts, those little things DO matter. It is critical that they get maximum value from the $ spent. By doing so, they can occassionally accommodate a contract like the one Nate Clements will receive. But when you allocate a combined $35M on Josh Reed, Robert Royal, Matt Bowen, Peerless Price and Tutan Reyes, then it comes back to bite you when you have an actual DESERVING player up for an extension! The Patriots went after Peerless Price too -- and offered him a 1-year deal for under a million bucks. That's about what he deserved. -

A-Train, Fowler and Kiwauke Thomas were good signings. All produced and matched their contracts. I beg to differ with Price, Royal and Bowen. Peerless Price: Overpaid at 4yrs $10M. In 2006, he made $800K base with a $2.7M signing bonus. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? This for someone who had been cut from 2 different teams in two years? The Patriots managed to sign Reche Caldwell for a lot less and got much better production out of him. Robert Royal: Overpaid at 5yrs $10M. In 2006, he made about $600K with a $2.5M signing bonus. This guy has hands of stone and is not a good pass catcher, as evidenced by the Tennessee game AND a few others. He is a solid locker room guy, so perhaps the jury is still out... but I certainly wouldn't call this a coup by any means. Bowen was signed to a fairly hefty contract despite the fact that Bills' brass had been targeting Whitner in the first round. If I am not mistaken, he made over $1M per year -- for a backup safety? -

This is absolutely wrong. I am willing to put Marv on a pedestal for all he has done for this franchise, but this was a colossal mistake. Eliminating the option for a franchise tag essentially eliminated any chance of leverage this team had in his contract situation. If Nate were to hold out, he would be forfeting his salary -- something he would do for some time, but would eventually have to come back and play. In the absolute worst case, if Nate refused to play period, the Bills still retain the rights of the number 1 free agent on the market and can look into trade possibilities. In the best case, Nate and his agent feel it is in their best interest to come to the able and negotiate a long-term deal with the Bills to ensure financial security rather than play an additional year on a 1-year deal and risk injury. This decision was plain stupid, no matter what you apologists say. Add to it Marv's humiliating press conference... when asked why he made such a dumb move, his response was that it would be "unfair." This business was never fair to begin with and if he doesn't realize that, he's not cut out to be a GM. -

And unfrotunately, in the last 5 years or so, he has proven to be right more often than not. -

I listened to the press conference and it was absolutely embarassing listening to the general manager of an NFL franchise describe using the franchise tag twice as "unfair." Are you kidding me? What is "truly" unfair is allowing one of your most valuable assets to walk with no compensation. -

Well said. -
Already discussed Moulds and in response to me saying Moulds moves the sticks, Ramius brought up a good point with his low 9.8 YPC. I then did some of my own research and found that among #2 receivers around the league, Moulds' numbers actually "are" a tad on the low side -- and in doing so found out that Peerless' numbers were even worse! Thus, I brought up the point. It's called a "discussion" -- and as discussions become more in-depth, they often gain in scope and topics that weren't under the original scope of discussion sometimes do come into play as it evloves. In any case, thanks for the wonderful debate, little fella. I shouldn't be nitpicking on typos... and what do you think of Peerless replacing Moulds?
-
The argument was about Moulds cutting it as a #2 receiver (read the subject of the tread). To support the fact that he is NOT a good #2 receiver, his YPC was brought up. I then brought up Peerless Price's YPC, pointing out that it was even worse than Moulds. This is an apt comparison, given that (a) We are talking about YPC and (b) Price and Moulds are the #2 receivers for the Bills and Texans respectively. Thanks.
