Hot Take: Does Bobby Babich Lose His Job?
TFBillsfan replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
I realize everything is under the microscope with how we lost in the AFCC. However, when we step and reflect, the overall talent on the defensive side of the ball is significantly lacking. It’s amazing how the Bills were able to have the second best record in the AFC all things considered. Our DL and Secondary are woeful. There is NO ONE on the DL that is a disruptor and our secondary as a whole lacks the athleticism and speed. I don’t recall any INT by our secondary that wasn’t a result of an overthrow. Our Safeties played 15 yards off the LOS as they were vulnerable to getting beat deep. With zero pass rush and soft coverage, our defensive stats aren’t surprising. Josh and the offense have masked so many deficiencies and unfortunately those deficiencies are exploited in the playoffs. I believe the offense has averaged 27 points in the five playoffs losses with Josh as the QB. All things considered, Babich didn’t have much to work with. So no I don’t put the onus on Babich, but Beane, McDermott and Babich better hit on some instant impactful players in the draft and FA. IMO, the D is the primary reason why they can’t get over the hump. -
DL, Secondary and WR1 are positions that need a heavy dose of athleticism, physicality and speed. I don’t recall our secondary getting an INT that wasnt a severe overthrow. Our Safeties typically played 15 yards off the LOS as they were a liability getting beat deep and were atrocious blitzing. No wonder our 3rd down D was so bad. Minimal pass rush and super soft coverage isn’t stopping most competent NFL QB’s.

Yes Von should be cut and this thread just highlights how inadequate our DL is!
-
That’s a lot of draft capital for a player who is unproven. Unfortunately, our roster has two many holes to fill.
-
Sign me up for Groot, Oliver, (Simmons/Lawrence) and Smoot in a heartbeat!
-
Swing big? What would a realistic trade look like for Dexter Lawrence or Jeffrey Simmons? NYG or TN aren’t winning anytime soon.

Roster strengths: QB, RB, OL (roster is set here) Need to bring back Ty Johnson. TE, LB, K, P solid (would like to add more physicality at LB for depth) TE has Knox, Kincaid, Gilliam and Davidson who has shown good upside. WR decent but needs a playmaker. (Shakir, Samuel, Coleman and Hollins) Need speed and someone that can separate. DE, DT, S and Corner Major upgrades needed. Outside of Oliver, Benford, Groot and Bishop are viable pieces to build around. In addition, our DL philosophy needs to significantly change. Unfortunately, difference makers at DE and DT will need to come thru the draft which Beane has missed multiple times. CB and S can be had in FA but will come with a cost. Regardless, we can’t run it back with Hamlin, Rapp and Bishop at S playing 15 yards off the LOS and are a liability blitzing and staying healthy. At the end of the day Beane needs to take beat available player at DE, DT, WR, CB or S and not be timid about moving up to get a legit difference maker. He needs to knock the first three picks out of the park and they need to be immediate contributors in year one! And I don’t think it’s unrealistic to swing for an impactful trade with a team that’s rebuilding. HELLO Dexter Lawrence NYG

Don’t disagree. We still don’t have a #1 WR and the DL is a hot mess. I don’t see any impactful FA’s at WR or DL, so Beane will either need to be aggressive in the draft or trade for someone!
-
All good. There is a ton of valid emotion on the board when you lose a game like this. But to move forward we have to be realistic. Pick ourselves back up, regroup, reassess, adjust and get right back on the horse as painful and disappointing as it is. BILLIEVE BILLSMAFIA!

Well stated. Realistically as hard as it is, this roster and team should be better next year. It’s a solid team but there’s a reason why we only had two pro bowlers. It needs better talent to get over the hump.

Sucks to begin this conversation but 29 other teams already started this conversation. Bills have a ton of draft capital and should have money to land some FA’s. Assuming Von, Hamlin, Cooper, Jordan Phillips, Rasul Douglas, Elam and DaQuan Jones won’t be back. It’s pretty straightforward, the Bills primary needs are DE, DT, CB, S and WR. WR: Shakir, Samuel, Coleman and assuming Hollins is resigned. IMO, this is the year Beane needs to be aggressive with the draft. Go up and get an immediate impactful player. Realistically, the offense is pretty solid outside of WR. He must hit on two immediate contributors in the draft and one or two in FA! Make a trade for a player if necessary. The roster needs a significant upgrade in talent defensively. Babich and Brady both have a full year under their belts and lots of room to grow. LETS GO BUFFALO!

Unfortunately, our DL consist of numerous role players. This is the root of many issues. Beane and McDermott have thrown tons of resources in draft capital and FA, and have pretty much whiffed on all of them. When you miss that much, it causes ripple effects in the roster. In addition, our secondary needs a substantial upgrade in talent. Hamlin/Rapp are below average. Bishop is gonna need to take a MAJOR step in his second season. Douglas and Benford are okay but rarely get an interception. DT, DE, CB and S are pressing needs. He has to do better at finding impact players. IMO, KC continues to draft better than Buffalo and that has to change!
-
It’s hard to give the draft class anything above a C. (Not one consistent impactful player) Hopefully, Coleman and Bishop take HUGE steps forward next season, but it doesn’t look promising. Coupled that with Kincaid and Beane has missed on both his first offensive picks in back to back drafts.
-
McDermott is now 0-4 vs KC in the playoffs. His mentor has absolutely owned him. He’s yet to win a playoff game on the road and his defense continues to come up short in the playoffs. At some point, it’s a combo of philosophy, scheme, talent and execution. @Jacksonville (winnable) @Houston (2nd half collapse) @KC (blown out in AFCC) @KC (13 secs) @KC AFCC Candidly, he ought to be 4-1 on the road. McDermott is a solid coach but the lack of difference makers on D and his inability to adjust in big moments are his Achilles heel. Big picture, the Bills are five time AFCE champions. They’ll regroup, adjust and make another run at it next year!
-
Highly likely Hamlin, Von Miller, Cooper, Elam, Jordan Phillips and Douglas probably are not on the roster next season. The roster is solid but DE, DT, S, CB and WR (speed) have to be addressed. Beane must hit on at minimum three of those positions who are impactful.

I’m numb and know emotions will be all over the board. At the end of the day, KC SIMPLY executed better than Buffalo. Their players made plays when it mattered, ours didn’t. The Bills failed to convert multiple two point conversions and got stopped multiple times on tush pushes. And when it mattered most our TE dropped a wide open pass. Josh masks a lot of deficiencies but at the end of the day, we need more playmakers and Beane MUST do better drafting and getting impactful players. You have a ton of draft capital so USE IT! KC continues to hit on their draft picks while we don’t. It’s been an amazing season and realistically the Bills exceeded expectations. However, with the door open to get to the Super Bowl, it’s significantly disappointing not to seize the opportunity.
