Agreed I think it was a td but also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't overturn it. I was however shocked by the overturning of the Sanders catch which I thought was a catch and then fumble.

also thought this was any easy call that they got right. the final replay they showed at the stadium cleared it up pretty well. my buddy sitting beside me was a broncos fan and agreed it wasn't a catch.

I just wasn't really surprised by either play. I thought they got them right.

I didn't see any after the game replays or photos to show it either way, but I thought McD should have challenged, too.

I was glad he didn't. if you understand the rules of what a catch needs to be now it was a clear incompletion.... that comes off as me being a know it all. but it seemed really clear to me.

  2. Was everyone else screaming for this play to be challenged? A clear TD, Tolbert had total possession when the call broke the plane and somehow the Bills don't challenge. They wind up getting a bit lucky on the next play with the tipped ball right into Holmes hands.

Anyway, haven't seen this discussed since it didn't cost us, but this could of been a game changing decision not to challenge. Makes me a bit nervous about their challenge process moving forward.

it most definitely wasn't a clear td. he didn't maintain control throughout his football move and turn up field. it would have easily been upheld.

  3. Doesn't ESPN's QBR factor in the context of a play? Everybody hates that stat.

everybody hates it becuz if you use it, it doesn't fit into the "tyrod sucks" analysis.

sarcasm aside.... I think it may take into accounts downs and distance maybe but I don't know about if it takes "when" it happened into account or stuff like that. its quite mysterious.

Now, Thats What Im Talkin About! Bills Beat Broncos

Well, well, well what have we here? That looked like a real, honest-to-goodness football team at New Era Field, and for the first time in a long time Im not talking about the visitors.

The Bills handled the Broncos Sunday in workmanlike fashion, 26-16. Most of the rest of the football world might have called it a boring game, and its true, the Bills are playing a boring brand of football. But isnt it GREAT!!?

Sean McDermott hasnt said it in so many words, but Ive come to suspect that hes a devotee of Bill Belichick methods. McDermott admits he studies regularly, and he has a library full of notebooks to prove it. He must have spent some time studying Belichick, because Belichick is the best and thats what McDermott wants to be.

The evidence is in how his Bills team plays. Do your job already has become a cliché, but isnt it obvious thats what the Bills are about? Learn you job and do your job; everything else will take care of itself. If the coaches do their jobs studying the upcoming opponent, preparing the game plan and communicating the plan to the players, and if the players do what theyve been taught, good things happen.

Do your job has been on display since the start of the season, and the Broncos game was the latest and best example. The Broncos are not without their flaws (most notably their quarterback), but they are a good team. They have a good, maybe excellent, maybe even great, defense. They have a solid offensive line, good running backs, dangerous receivers. The Broncos are a good team. And the Bills just went to work against them. Every quarter, every down, do your job. The Bills didnt make a lot of spectacular plays; they just made a lot of good plays because they did their jobs.

The Bills style of play helps explain why Sammy Watkins is in Los Angeles. We all love the spectacular play, the kind of plays Sammy makes. McDermott and his GM believe it isnt necessary to make those plays to win games, and they certainly dont want to base the long-term fortunes of the team on those kind of plays; when youre built to win by getting explosive plays from explosive players, what happens when you lose the players to retirement, free agency or injury? McDermott and his GM seem to believe its a better, more sustainable strategy, to have good coaches and good players doing their jobs, every day, every week, every year. Like Bill Belichick.

Here are some guys did their jobs against the Broncos, and some other thoughts about the game:

    1. EJ Gaines and TreDavious White. Being an NFL cornerback is one of the toughest and loneliest jobs in the game, especially on days when youre matched up against guys like Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. Those guys can play. White and Gaines didnt, couldnt, stop them, but they contained them. They gave up some completions, but they didnt give up a lot of yards after the catch. They were always around the ball and they made good, sure tackles. They gave up 170 yards passing to the two studs, but they kept both of them out of the end zone. It was a workmanlike job by each of them.

White had his rookie moments, once when he seemed to take the wrong drop into his zone and allowed a 20 yard completion, and once where Sanders beat him long and White recovered to make the tackle and force the incompletion when the Bills challenged the ruling. On both plays it appeared that White misunderstood his assignment. To his credit, he kept at it, doing his job, making plays. In particular, the recovery on the deep ball to Sanders was a great athletic effort that gave his coach a chance to get the call reversed.

    2. LeSean McCoy. CMon, Shady, have the common decency respect either the flag or your teammates by not stretching during the national anthem. Still, talk about a man who does his job! Play after play he pounded into the Denver defensive front, looking for any opportunity to make a play. Some backs would have quit by the fourth quarter, but not McCoy. On the final drive, after Von Miller gave the Bills a second chance, Shady converted two critical third downs, first with several nifty moves to get 7 yards on a third and 6 reception, and then with pure determination getting 2+ yards on third and 2. If Shady werent Shady, the Bills would have punted, Millers blunder would have been forgotten, and the Broncos would have had the ball with six minutes left, down 7. Instead, the Bills got the field goal, and the next time the Broncos had the ball, they were down 10 with three minutes left. That drive, and Shadys plays, ended the game.

    3. Stephen Hauschka. You think maybe its a good thing to have a guy who can hit long-range threes like Steph Curry? Goodness. And by the way, watch him when he kicks those long ones. He looks like a guy whos just doing his job.

    4. Preston Brown. The wheels need to be turning in Brandon Beanes head, wondering what hes going to do about the fact that his middle linebacker is not Luke Keuchly. Browns a solid player, a do-your-job kind of guy, but the persistent rumors are true: pass defense isnt his thing. It looked to me like his drops are late and therefore not deep enough. He isnt disruptive in the passing game. Nice player, and he does a lot of good things, but Im guessing the Bills will be looking for an upgrade.

How about Brown getting held on the Charless touchdown run? He was tackled from behind. That was about the worst bad call of the day, along with the ruling that the Sanders catch wasnt a catch. The other calls, the pass interference, the hit out of bounds, the roughing the passer? Each was marginal, but the players know that if they do those things, theres a risk theyll get called. It happened, move on, do your job.

    5. Zay Jones. Anyone else starting to worry that Jones doesnt have the hands to be a reliable pizza delivery guy, let alone an NFL wideout? Sorry about that sausage and double cheese pie, maam. Let me help you with those paper towels. Andre Holmes was the guy whos supposed to have the bad hands, and Zays making Holmes look like genuine threat. It takes a while for most rookie receivers to work their way into productive roles in NFL lineups, and maybe Zay just needs time, but Im starting to worry.

    6. Tyrod Taylor. To throw a bone to the Tyrod-detractors, Tyrod looked indecisive in the pocket on several plays. It didnt give me a good feeling. Still, I will not argue with 20-26 for 213 yards, 2 TDs and no INTs. Dare I say it? He did his job. You say you want 28 completions and 300 yards? I hear you, but its pretty clear that isnt Taylors job.

Throw to OLeary wasnt bad, was it? Finding Matthews on the same drive was pretty. Touchdown to Clay was excellent play design and execution. Scrambling, going down to a knee, getting up and scrambling for a first down was okay, too.

Its okay if the Bills keep Peterman on the bench for another week, dontcha think?

    7. Sean McDermott. Maybe this offense will grow into a more diversified attack and start putting up more yards and more points, but its pretty clear that at least for now, this is run-first, run-the-clock offense that is going to take what it can get and count on the defense to keep games close and win it in the end. That last drive, the only drive that started in the fourth quarter, proves the point. About 15 plays total 4 passes, and all of them ultra-safe. McDermott was perfectly happy to run the ball, run the clock and when necessary send his defense on the field. He was rewarded when his offense held the ball and got the field goal. Last week, so long as he was within one touchdown, he didnt believe it was necessary to open up his offense. Its conservative, to say the least, but its hard to argue with his results so far.

Fake punt? No problem, do your job.

    8. The crowd. The parking lots I saw were full, as usual, and once again they were pretty quiet before the game and, surprisingly, even after the game. A lot of the raucous rowdiness is gone, and I miss it. But in the stadium on Sunday, the crowd was back into it. A lot of noise on most of the Denver offensive plays. Better yet, there were a couple of those special moments, moments that havent happened much in the past several years, when the place is rocking, the noise is LOUD and persistent and then, somehow, a few seconds before the snap, it clicks up to another level. The noise doesnt go up gradually; it just steps up to a level that seconds before didnt seem possible, a level that feels like the beams and girders must be shaking. Really cool, and its gotta be the heads of the visitors.

    9. The heat was brutal. After one play late in the game-clinching drive, Richie was standing still, about five yards beyond the line of scrimmage. He looked like he was ready to fall over and cause a 5,1 quake. Finally he walked back to the huddle. A couple minutes later, at the two minute warning, both Hughes and Williams raised their hands and walked to sidelines, begging for a blow. Thats one reason McDermott kept using his timeouts at the end of the game. His best players were spent.

    10. The lines. It was a war, for all four lines. The Bills offensive line struggled to get anything in the running game and did a decent job giving Tyrod some space to work in. The Broncos offensive line struggled similarly, because the Bills front was aggressive all day long. Every yard was hard earned. One big difference was QB mobility when his line got Siemian in trouble, bad things happened to him.

The Bills might be able to stay in the game with any team in the league. Well find out next week in Atlanta.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were everyday people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full days hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

reading #8 and recalling it literally gave me chills and made my arm hairs stand on end.... there were times yesterday where I must admit I actually stayed quiet before the snap just so I could soak in what you just mentioned.

my mom isn't really a football fan but has always watched and paid attention to the bills becuz of my love for them. my wife and I took her to her first game yesterday and she just smiled ear to ear the whole time. when we were done she said there were very few events in her life that gave her that many chills and overpower her senses and emotions like that game did. really cool really fun day to share with her.

lots of cocky broncos fans there yesterday. you would have thought they were already the AFC champs after last weeks beat down of dallas if you paid attention to the media..... what a satisfying game to be in attendance

  5. Seimien has 6 TDs and 4 INTs. Taylor has 4 TDs and 1 INT. Taylor is the ninth leading passer, Trevor is 16th. They both avage 7.1 yards per attempt.

right and one has a top 5 wr duo to throw to while the other has Matthews and a rookie with a case of the drops.

no point in trying to talk to that dude. his mind is made up..... and he looks like a damn fool

  6. As an ex army officer, I love tactics. But I've never had the time to learn the intricacies of NFL offenses. Even with my average-ish understanding, though, the run game has me worried after the Panthers game.

I was in awe of the Roman-designed rushing attack. Sometimes you'd see plays where none of the offensive linemen had to overwhelm their guy. They just had to be in the right place on the right time. Roman's attack was often predicated upon discipline, timing, athleticism and precision. It didn't always require the OL to be maulers. And yet they gave Shady and MB plenty of space to run.

Rico said he spent a lot of time watching the 2016 Bills rushing attack to see what works. And yet Rico's zone-blocking scheme doesn't bear any resemblance - in my eyes - to Roman's scheme. Our OL weren't winning the one-on-one battles against the Panthers that they had to win and the holes weren't there.

I noticed the difference in the blocking/running scheme during the Jets game but we were so productive that game, who cared? But now I'm worried that Rico didn't borrow enough from Roman. Given who we have at QB and WR, we need our rushing attack to be highly productive. Sunday, it wasn't.

I'd love to hear some observations and insights from guys who are better at Xs and Os than I am.

I've thought over the first 2 games the run game was extremely vanilla. even vs the jets I thought it was predictable..... I think his run philosophy is based off having an offense that can threaten through the air to loosen up the ground game.

...... and its pretty evident this pass offense isn't gonna loosen anything up for anyone.

  7. No question at all. It was as though people were thinking, "oh, no, you're not going to fool me again. I'm not getting excited today only to watch them get their butts kicked next week." You can't lose for as long as the Bills have lost without it affecting the fans' attitude.

A lot of fans aren't willing to buy in just yet. Win in Carolina and things will be different when the Broncos come to town. Lose in Carolina and I think the fans will still be waiting for some real evidence that things are different. Yesterday was nice, but not enough to convince most fans.

I was there and I didn't really notice it until you pointed it out in your initial post. definitely just 60,000 people basically racing to their cars to get out of there and get home.... very business trip like.

for me though it had more to do with the fact that we played what looks to be an awful team. I went in knowing there wasn't really much they could do while beating them that would get me all too excited.

  8. Oh excuse me.

They will give McCoy an extra 2.5 mil if he hits certain milestones.

Would've made a lot more sense to ACTUALLY use that 2.5 on MG and Woods 8 million towards the Watkins contract.... IMO.

I cant believe people are losing so much sleep over gillislee... really like the guy. real nice backup. didn't do anything last night that was overly impressive. you don't think the pats could have found 10-15 other guys to fill that role? he had 3 td's from inside the 2. are we really losing our minds over that? why? we've got McCoy, and apparently enough confidence in the rest of the crew to let Williams walk after an impressive preseason. Tolbert could very easily do EXACTLY what td mike did last night. I don't get the uproar. its a waste of energy

  9. hahaha..yup!

Also don't forget how the narrative changed to "this Chiefs team has been good, they shouldn't be overlooked, they belong, etc etc"; nobody was saying that 2hrs prior to the game. All of the experts were to busy wiping Brady's butt sweat off their face.

right.... how many times did they mention brady completing less than 50% of his passes? nooooo that couldn't have anything to do with the loss. gotta be the ONE injured player on D.

  10. i was much more annoyed about how the narrative changed at the beginning of the 4th quarter from collinsworth riding the pats D*** the whole time to him making excuses for the defense just becuz hightower went down. good lord it was all he talked about.

dude...... injuries happen. get over it. basically all we heard about the whole 4th quarter from the booth was how the defense was giving up 42 points becuz of one freaking LB going down. it was ridiculous. it couldn't just be becuz brady played like crap and the defense was getting gashed. nope. they were getting beat becuz a linebacker went down. good lord.

  11. It's preseason. The SB Bills used to lose preseason games all the time. We've seen EJ look awesome in preseason performances. Preseason doesn't mean squat.

I'm not defending Taylor. I just don't think you can judge him on a partial preseason performance.

I expect TT to play the regular season this season a lot like last regular season. Maybe a bit better because he has an OC who understands the passing game a little better. Maybe a little worse if the pass protection doesn't gel.

holy crap thank you!!!! its really this simple.

  12. There

    Is

    No

    Defense

TT had a Rating of 12 last night

you're 100% right. no excuses for it. it was bad..... but people overreacting about preseason week 2, as if its the indicator of how the season will go, look really really silly....

could we not hang our arguments for either side of the fence on week 2 of the preseason? good lord people.

  13. i wasn't able to watch the game closely last night, but when i was concentrating, tyrod is the one thing that stood out...and in the worst way. he was kinda painful to watch. that being said, it would have to be a pretty decent pick to trade him away at this point.

it sucked. it was a bit worrisome. but i feel like we know what tyrod is at this point. its not what was on display last night. its most definitely not anything great, but its just not as bad as last night either. if the defense actually is improving like it seems to be and tyrod shows up week 1 as the guy he's been the first 2 years i think they have a real shot at winning more than they lose.

and then you still have enough ammo with current and future picks to go get the qb you want for a winning squad..... thats exciting to me.

Start Peterman with the ones. But he doesn't get Glenn or Matthews. then we will know.

even with a history of going to bat for tyrod, i cant pretend like the thought of peterman getting time with the 1's wouldnt intrigue me.

  14. I guess I'm an optimist. But what I try to do most of the time is understand why management would do what it did. So I look for reasons that seem logical.

That comes off as me sounding like I'm always supporting the team and their decisions. And I generally do support them, because as I think about why they might of done something, I come to understand the logic in their choice.

But I actually recognize that some decisions work, and some don't. In this case, for example, I'm not saying that unloading Watkins was without question a good decision. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. But I can see why it fits what they're doing.

My views are changing about player personnel. I think the coach is the most important guy on the team, the QB is second, and practically no one else matters. In particular, as much as I love watching them, I think great receivers are pretty much unimportant. Julio Jones hasn't won, Fitzgerald hasn't won. Julian Edelman is far from being in the conversation about great receivers, but he wins. So I've come to think that wideouts are a distraction.

I may be picking nits here but I think you coulda picked way better examples for teams that havnt won with great wr's..... while these guys havnt won titles think back to some of the reasons for their teams success.... think back to any cards playoff win and then look at how fitz performed. the guy is unreal in big games. I don't think it can be debated that jones is one of the main reasons the falcons were in the title game. heck the guy even made an unreal catch in that superbowl that should have sealed up the game at the time. to use those 2 names as the argument for "unimportant" may not have been the best choice.

i'm not even disagreeing that wr's aren't all that important. but its pretty obvious those 2 have been MAJOR parts of any success those teams have had recently. each team was within minutes/seconds of a title becuz of them.

  15.

....this is his "make it or break it" year under Dennison's tutelage IMO, even if Sammy is gone.....Rodgers lost Nelson last year and ran the table after 4-6.........a good QB still finds others in his receiving corp even if his "go to" guy is out....

nelson started all 16 games last year..... and using one of the best of all time for your argument isnt the best example I don't think. nobody is expecting taylor to be that good but its pretty well known as long as he has his starters in there he can be a real solid qb.

  16.

They were talking about Miami on GMF this morning glowing over Jay Ajay and his 3-200 yds games last year, weren't the Wrex led Bills victims of 2 of those?

Yep. But I think Ajay won't do that again.

i'm dumbfounded at how much love that team is getting going into this year. if i'm not mistaken they were ranked in the 20's in both total offense and defense. you aren't stringing multiple winning seasons together with those sort of numbers.... #3 on this list? seriously? ajayi got 50% of his yds in 3 freakin games and is anyone other than landry really scaring anyone on that team? COME ON.

  17. me too. there's a very specific vibe at the games that just can't be beat. the smells, the noise, etc. just the best. especially the opener...it's like a regular game on steroids.

this year will be my first season opener experience. been to 15-20 games over the last decade but never a season opener. and you sum it up wonderfully. the air seems more crisp and clear, there is a weird accoustic buzz surrounding the whole area. i think a lot of that has to do with the setting and non-urban feel that other stadiums cant offer. growing up on a farm in the stix it really suits my taste well. it has that "field party" feel to it with football mixed in..... chugging liquor out of girls butt cracks is always a plus too i guess. so there's that.

    and i just got chills.....

  18.

teams lose players. sometimes that happens. it's not all on flacco. it's the most important position and to have the consistency at that spot is worth every penny of his deal.

he's been consistent alright.... consistently middling and underwhelming.

did anyone actually think that was a good deal back when it happened? hell, i even think ozzie was wincing at the thought of it when it was getting done. like "ah crap, this guy just messed around and got us a title. now we gotta pay him"... excluding a 4 game stretch in 2012 the guy has been average to slightly above for his whole career. downright bad at points.
