I took a ride out this weekend to Cleveland to meet up with @BarleyNY and we saw Monday night's game.  Good times despite the poor on the field product the Mets put out.  Cleveland is a nice city.  I was surprised at the game there was a good number of Mets fans.  I'd venture 25% of the fans there.  That and the fact that Lindor was actually greeted warmly by the Guardian fans.  I was expected him to be booed.

Going to a game in Cincy last year and Cleveland this year I'm becoming more aware other teams in other cities have more attractions around the stadium in terms of bars and restaurants within walking distance.  Jack's casino downtown in Cleveland is a short walk to Progressive Field and there are a number of bars/restaurants near by within walking distance.  Citifield has the Flushing Meadows park near by but not a lot else to offer.  Years back I ventured a couple of blocks away from Citifield in Flushing out of curiosity....  it looked kind of sketchy there.  I would not be surprised if those garages across the street there are scrapping stolen cars for parts.

Maybe besides the on the field product this is something Cohen will look into more as owner.... building more attractions near by.  As far as the Mets goes we all kind of knew this year and there's a good chance next year will be a wash.  But I mean there's really not much going on at the moment to hang your hat on.  I'm thinking Big Pete and Diaz get traded or leave.

I'd certainly rather spend my $$$ to see the team in Cleveland vs NY.

    Wow... My condolences.

How old was the perp? Is it on camera?  Will they serve time and make restitution?

I take my life in my hands everytime I leave work. Ford employee notoriously run the red light a few hundred yards to the left. Traffic is busy... Only time most can make a left out of work access road is when light is red to the west.

Sadly it seems it's not cautious driving anymore just to wait a few seconds to go after the light turns green if you are the 1st car.

I recognize most of the posters on this side of the board are not currently living in WNY and they might not even know who the Bandits are LOL.  For those that still live in WNY what is your interest level in the Bandits?  I'm diehard when it comes to the Bills and Sabres but I just can't find myself getting into the Bandits even though they are about to play for their 2nd consecutive Championship tonight.  They do have a nice niche following around here but it's nothing like it would be if the Sabres were in the playoffs right now.  I believe the game is being aired live on some channel here tonight but I don't even know if I can sit through the entire game.

*For those that don't know the Bandits are the professional indoor Lacrosse team we have in Buffalo.  To be fair they are the most successful professional sports franchise we have ever seen in Buffalo haha

I might have heard of them before your thread but my knowledge of the team and league is zilch.

That being said I did a little research on the league itself.  I feel like it might have some old school sports charm in that the players are most likely doing it as a labor of love.  Being what google has as the average salary for players in the league the players must all have other jobs in the offseason.   Especially if they have a family.

But pro baseball and football was like that at one time way way way back as well.  I think the Browns even have the numbers retired of some players that died in the off season doing other jobs.

The league isn't my thing and most likely won't ever be.  That being said I never played lacrosse.  And I don't dismiss the league at all.

Diaz blows another one. Off the top of my head I can't think of another player who I had zero confidence in (2019) and then had the utmost confidence in (2022) and now I'm trending back to no confidence.  Hopefully just bumps in the road coming off the injury. If not, he could be part of another trade deadline purge - along with Polar Bear.

On the bright side at least they won tonight.  But yeah Diaz isnt instilling much faith in me either.

While I don’t hate the Phillies as much as the average Met fan does, a 4 game sweep by the Phils coupled with the Rangers winning tonight would have been brutal.

ha well my guess that Carolina would prevail has come to naught. Rangers score 3 straight GEEZ

4-3 with a minute to go

empty net score 5-3 Rangers Win the series. The home crowd is devastated.

    That's a shame and I don't even like Carolina.

  6. When you’re driving down a main road and a car on a side road come to their stop sign at about 100mph looking and feeling like they are going to plow into you.  I always fear that person just ain’t stoping.

Up 4-2 in the ninth, Diaz blew another save against the damn Phillies tonight and the Mets lost 5-4 in ten. He's already allowed three HRs on the year and is looking more like pre-COVID Diaz than 2022 Diaz. Oh well, fug it. We're flying from Richmond to JFK in the morning with a layover and then on to Rome. Rome, Florence, Venice, & Tuscany await...free of Mets aggravation. Take care fellas, see you online in a couple of weeks. Ciao!

Unless you happen to run into Mike Piazza 😅…..   I think he’s a coach of Team Italy the last I heard in baseball?

    Enjoy the trip

  8. Me very much so.

I know last year a bakery my grandparents used to take me to closed up after many many years.  As a grown up I would go there for years as well.  Part of the appeal was the nostalgic feel of that part of town/the place.  But to my good fortune for the time being someone re-opened the bakery.  They don't carry as much products as they used too but it's still good quality.  I felt really happy when they opened up again.

Or today for instance driving I came across an outlet store my parents took me to as a kid.  Looked like the place dwindled down a lot over time.  But it still brought back good memories.

And on a sad note I struggled a bit when I found out online one day a childhood friend died.   He an as adult seemed to go down some pretty bad paths in life involving the police after googling his name.  But I can still recall hanging out with him a little when we were kids.  My mom even one day when we were kids was able to set up an appointment with Carvel where we got to see the back of the store and make ice cream for ourselves as part of the Cub Scouts.  One day out of the blue recently at an ice cream parlor I thought of Kevin and damn I mean it hurt.  Even though I hadn't seen him in over 30 years.

But that is just me.  My Dad commented about the outlet store "It had its heyday" when I asked him about the place.  My mom and another friend just kind of remarked "The choices people make in life" kind of thing when I brought up my old friend.  My aunt when we talk about family stuff is very much a not look back on the past kind of person.  She comments a lot how people are always resident to change.

So yeah in my long winded way you can see I am quite a nostalgic person.  Others I know not at all.

    How about you?

    NFL. Not even close.

However, ratings and popularity can vary across different regions of the country.

I'm sure in some parts of the country, the NBA may been just as big as the NFL, but overall, no.

Yeah in New York/New Jersey after Super Bowl 25 the G-men really weren't that good for much of the 90's.  The Jets had a couple good seasons but weren't really that solid either.  Coupling that with the days pre-Internet yet alone social media the NBA seemed way more popular in these parts then through my lenses.

I'm not sure though as a whole the NFL was still more widely popular than the NBA back then.  I mean you had guys like Michael Jordan, Shaq, Dennis Rodman, and Larry Bird, Magic Johnson who had cross over appeal to more mainstream audiences.  NBA shoe culture was huge back in the day as well.

  10. Cleveland does a little.  Friendly people overall and near a Great Lake.

The other non obvious place for me is Plainfield, NJ.  It has some good wing places around the city.  Plus in NJ it’s one of the best cities for value for your money in terms of small restaurants imo.  Buffalo always had real good food and I think is still underrated there in general.  That and the Sleepy Hollow part of the city.  There’s older bigger homes there with huge trees.  It reminds me a little of the part of Buffalo by the Darwin Martin house.  And ironically it’s nicknamed the Queen City as well.

Anyone catch the last play of the game tonight? A lot to unpack. Here are my scatterbrained thoughts:

I'm a bit surprised that the call on the field was out. Ump's view was probably blocked but from a side view it looked like Pete was in.

Tie goes to the runner? That's what it looked like to me on replay with the tag and Pete's hand hitting the plate after bouncing in front of it.

Slow-motion instant replay is a waste of everyone's time - in every sport - unfortunately we've crossed the Rubicon.

Did the Mets challenge whether Pete was safe or whether the plate was blocked? Not sure whether they did or whether they had to specify what they were challenging. For the record I hate the blocking the plate rules but....

....Mendoza was pretty adamant that MLB had made it clear that standing on or straddling the plate constituted blocking and Narvaez backed it up in a post-game interview.

The SNY live feed caught the exchange between Mendoza and the ump after the replay decision and it was awesome.  Some salty language from Mendoza wrt standing/straddling and the ump telling him it was out of his hands. Sports could do with more of that live interaction between refs and players/coaches. One of the upstart football leagues had a mike on the replay official walking through the decision process and if you ever caught any hot mikes of NHL refs warning players during live play to tone things or they'll get called it's awesome.

I thought he looked safe at first but slowing it down I'm not 100% sure Pete's hand after touched home plate.

Maybe because they had a nice come from behind win today I'm not as upset about it.  Lindor had a nice day.

  12. I know as a kid growing up that magazine along with Playboy TV seemed the ultimate in risque adult stuff growing up.  Little did I know though that that was just the tip of the iceberg then.  Lol

I have a couple magazines I hold as collector items/nostalgia kind of thing.  It usually involved me being a fan or liking whomever was on the cover.  I have the physical copies of the issues where Geri Halliwell, Cindy Crawford, and Lisa Rinna (pre-housewives) were on the cover.  I still have the Maxim and Blender magazines Christina Aguilera was on the cover in the early 2000s.

Funny story if anything this thread is making me think of my late Uncle (R.I.P).  He lead a pretty minimalist lifestyle in general.  When my aunt and uncle went to his apartment to clean it out well it seemed he had years and years subscriptions to Playboy magazine.  Apparently he had hundreds of them in his apartment.

I had other stuff going on and saw next to none of the game. When my son told me the no-hitter was in progress I think it was middle of the 6th and the game was about an hour and 10 minutes in, wtf. I didn't have the option of watching the rest - listened to the bloop hit on the radio in the car and quickly turned it off.

On a humorous note, the last thing I told my son before I headed out with the no-hitter in tact was to text his uncle and get him to Citi Field asap - Uncle Scott  was at Citi Field for both 'no hitters'.

LAMP time. Went to the game Friday night and I have the picture to prove it. When J.D. put one off the wall I was sure it was going out and went into arms up celebration mode. And you can't tell, but that's a Bills hoodie I'm wearing. Good times.

Yeah when no hitters threat today deep into the games with teams we like (in this case the Mets) via texts with friends/families and or other notifications we get through or phones or what not it's really not that hard to miss.  Not a case of you need to be glued to the TV to catch stuff like that.

One of my first Mets memories as a kid was watching this game in my grandmother's bedroom while she was babysitting me.

    https://sabr.org/gamesproj/game/september-10-1991-rookie-pete-schoureks-1-hitter-leads-mets-past-expos/

Even as a little kid that felt kind of intense in the 5th inning watching that as I knew he didn't give up a hit yet and for him to keep that one hitter going.  As you like to say, good times!

I watched the whole game. I thought we were finally going to get our first legitimate no-hitter.

Bummed about losing he no-no more than I am for losing the game.

    I hear ya.

But I mean the dude goes 8 innings and only gives up one hit and one run.  I mean what's like the actual odds of that the starter not getting a W?

Condolences anyone who caught most of the game tonight.  I just checked out the brief highlights and scores.

While I'm not the type of Mets fan to get upset over April games.....  tonight would have pissed me off if I watched.   Severino pitched his heart out carrying the no hitter into the 8th and the team couldn't even win the game for him.
