  1. I don't know if RW has turned over the reins (BTW, "reigns" are what kings do; "reins" are what control horses) but it surely seems that Nix has a commitment from him to spend more money. One of the things he mentioned in one of his public appearances was that the Bills were understaffed a bit in the scouting department and that he would be hiring more scouts to correct that. I don't think he would have said that if he didn't already have those expenses approved.
  2. I've watched about 30 of his games over the years which is why I'm a fan of his. Watched Clausen in high school and through his ND career, maybe 20 games total, which is why I'm not a fan of his. Watched maybe 10 games with Bradford and McCoy. Picking any player is a crapshoot, and QB more so than any other position. So while I think Lefevour would be a great match for Buffalo, really, who actually knows?
  3. Um, no it's not. Aside from a fairly small segment of American society, hockey isn't much of a draw. That's why the NHL is relegated to a minor position on network television in the regular season. Figure skating draws much bigger audiences. And the snowboarders are huge. There's also the possibility that NBC has made a shrewd business decision to draw viewers to its MSNBC channel to boost awareness of it with a wider audience. In other words, good old fashioned All-American capitalism at work. Of course, your thesis could be correct, that the White House is behind it all, though I don't know when they find the time, what with building all those concentration camps for Tea Baggers and the like.
  4. Yeah, long owned by RCA and later GE, two of the top defense contractors for generations. You can't get much more leftist than that! BTW, by the classic, 18th century definitions of liberal and conservative, the Founders and their supporters were liberal radicals and the US continues to be, by definition, a liberal democracy. A conservative (aka, Tory) believed/believes in the primacy of a king, the Church and the aristocracy, where all know "their place" and remain in that class for all time. A liberal was a child of the enlightenment who believed in a human-centric society, based on reason and science, and therefore opposed to "the superstition of organized religions." Read the Declaration of Independence, the Federalist Papers and The Constitution of the United States. These are the primary documents of the first secular humanist form of government and so US remains, thought the so-called "conservatives" (who are really more like totalitarians) continue to do all in their power to turn back the clock and to undermine the secular, liberal, humanist experiment that is the United States of America.
  5. McShay had me with this article...right up to his endorsement of Tony Pike. Or as I like to think of it, Tony Freakin' Pike! I wonder if he's even seen Pike play. McShay doesn't even have LeFevour in his top five but he does have room for Pike. Anybody who picks Pike as a top 5 QB forfeits any credibility he might have.
  6. A friend of mine who seems to get some inside info from god knows where says don't be surprised if Kurt Warner winds up in Buffalo. Seems out of the question to me but who knows? Anybody think that would be a good move?
  7. I don't think the Bills will use their first round pick on a QB, LT or NT. Players at these positions tend to need a year or more of experience to be reliable and the Bills really need players who can contribute right away. So, if after reviewing all the film they can, Nix and Gailey decide they guys they need for those positions aren't on the current roster, I expect them to either trade for them or to be very aggressive in free agency. Also, the draft seems particularly weak in "franchise" QBs. They might very well use a second or third round pick on, say, Dan Lefevour. And I think they'll grab a RB somewhere along the line (Toby Gerhart's coming out, isn't he?). While I'm not a big fan of McNabb, I could see the Bills packaging the #9 pick along with Lynch for him (Brian Westbrook looks like he's done in Philly) if Nix and Gailey don't think TE, Brohm of Fitz have the goods and don't believe any of the QBs coming out this year are "day one" starters.
  8. Yeah, but Jim Kelly won't like it. After all, Clausen is not only from California, he's from freakin' SoCal!
  9. Watching the recent Senior Bowl week coverage, I was surprised by how good Corey Chavous's analysis was. The guy knows what he's talking about. And he was doing it in the company of Mike Mayock. So I went to his website to look at his current mock draft (if you're interested, here's the site: http://draftnasty.com/ and here's the mock draft: http://draftnasty.com/insider_blogs/corey/...aft-version-1/) Chavous has the Bills taking Bulaga at #9. Hmm.
  10. The most successful QBs in the NFL have three key attributes: they quickly identify the defense; they make very fast decisions, and they throw with accuracy. Cannon arms and the ability to throw waaaaay down field are great add-ons but not necessary. Those first three attributes are.
  11. Do you remember Bledsoe beginning so well, then came the second half of that Raider game and he was never the same again and went into decline... BUT... We had Losman who looked really good so he became the starter. Showed a lot of promise. Then he went into decline... BUT ... We had Edwards who looked really good so he became the starter. Showed a lot of promise. Then he went into decline... Anybody besides me think that the coaches for the last decade might have more than a little bit to do with three QBs in a row going from promising to confused bums?
  12. Here's my summary of the discussions going on around here about the future of the Bills: Our QBs suck, our O-line sucks, Whitner sucks, our team sucks, we've got holes everywhere. So we have to bring in McNabb/Thigpen/Orton etc., get rid of Lynch/Evans/Schobel etc., draft Bradford/Clausen/Lefevour etc., get a LT, get a big, fat nose tackle, get better receivers, etc. AND pick the halftime act for the next Super Bowl. Whew! The thing is, the only judgments that matter are the ones that will come out of One Bills Drive. And I for one trust Buddy and Chan and their advisers more than I do myself. So what I think is going on right now is that those people are looking at every available piece of footage on everyone on the roster, talking with people who might have insight into these players, and coming to a determination about every one of them. In that process, they may decide that none of the QBs we have (or Evans, Whitner, Lynch, etc.) are up to their standards. Or maybe they'll decide that Brohm or McKelvin or Bell have tremendous upsides. I don't know what their final decisions will be. But I'm willing to trust them more than I've been willing to trust any FO types in at least a decade.
  13. Pink Floyd. Would love to watch the reaction in the high-priced boxes of the NFL poohbahs to "Money."
  14. I've heard what passes for country music today called "nothing more than rock and roll played by second rate bar bands."
  15. On the other hand, Mike Stonebreaker (of Notre Dame) had about the best name ever for a linebacker but never made it in the NFL.
  16. That's so off the wall it might actually work! With Phil Spector out on work release conducting the band, which would be the Tijuana Brass.
  17. No professional sport league in the US requires one minute of college. Both the NBA and the NFL base their qualification on the number of years that have passed since the candidates high school class graduated. Technically, not even high school is required.
  18. I don't believe that's true anymore. The greatest growth in the NFL fan base was with the Baby Boomer generation (and if you were born between 1946 and 1964, that's you). The Baby Bust generation that followed that one is also a strong supporter of the NFL. But the younger kids seem to be more interested in other sports and pastimes. Even when they like the NFL, they usually rank it lower on their list than other sports and pastimes.
  19. You could make a very good case that the Tuna Tree is the best in the NFL.
  20. I think the reason Hargrove was let go was because the league suspended him for a year. Is that correct?
