If you spend the draft picks to get one of the top QB's you had better have someone who can develop him into an elite franchise QB and also upgrade the line to protect him. Jim Kelly had Ted Marchibroda who taught him the playbook and also taught him to call all his own plays. Over the years the Bills haven't had either the QB or a man to develop him properly. Much less a decent Oline to help them develop as JP was always seeing/hearing phantom sackers after getting pounded on so often and Trent was concussed out of the NFL. Then considering this team passed on Deshawn Watson, I'm not so sure they can even properly evaluate a college QB as to who to select. It's for certain this team needs more than a game manager like Tyrod or even a more advanced version much like Alex Smith. Jim Kelly was a gunslinger but he also had a very solid team around him, line, receivers, coaches. He also had Thurman Thomas to hand the ball off to who was 60-70% of the offense. Be nice to see this team finally find the next Kelly. They already have the RB in Shady.

All 3 former Bills coaches now division co-leaders
Nihilarian replied to Foreigner's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Just relax. The Jags are 8-4 and Marrone might have the #1 defense which he inherited from ex-Seahawk DC Gus Bradley. (Perry Fewell is their DB's coach) They will probably lose their DC this offseason. While Saint Doug does have Tom Coughlin guiding him...he still has Nate Hackett as his OC. As long as Hackett is his OC I don't see that Jags offense doing all that much. They have the #1 rushing attack and #24th passing attack. The Titans 8-4 under Mike Mularkey are very similar to the Jags in that they have a good running game and not so great passing attack even with Mariota at QB. they are sorta middling on both sides of the ball with Dick LeBeau as their DC. Would either of these teams be as good this season if Andrew Luck was healthy and the Colts had a decent HC or if the Texans hadn't lost Deshaun Watson for the season? The Chargers are 6-6 and in the running because the Chiefs have been falling on their face. QB Phillip Rivers is doing well and just look at Alynns assistants, Ken Whisenhunt is his OC and Gus Bradley is the DC. The raiders are also 6-6 as are the Chiefs and their next two games are the Raiders, Chargers. The Buffalo Bills are 6-6 and Tom Brady is another year older. Give McD some time to bring in a QB and some defensive players to fit his scheme. I know I didn't expect the Bills to have a shot at the playoffs in their first year under a new HC considering what the man inherited from Wrex Ryan and Doug highlight film. -
I agree with this! In the past, I have vehemently condemned Jauron ( for his firing his OC two weeks before the season started, cutting his starting RT at the same point because he couldn't get to the line quickly enough as the team was running the no-huddle offense! Which they scrapped after two regular season games. BTW, that starting tackle went back to his old team and played the entire season.) I Condemned Chan Gailey for selecting his "waterbug" RB with the first pick after the team had traded away their all-pro LT the year previous and was in desperate need at LT. This same man defended Trent Edwards all preseason as his starter only to cut him after two regular season games. He then went to Ryan Fitzpatrick who did his best Mike Vick impression by running for his life for the first six games as the team started the 2010 season 0-8. Doug Marrone allowed his rookie first-round draft pick at QB to go into his first season with no QB coach or veteran QB on the roster and was supposed to learn the NFL ropes from an OC who had never been an NFL OC in his career. For an ex NFL line coach who was out on the field showing the O line players how to do their jobs, Marrone had a mess of an offensive line in his two seasons in Buffalo. Erik Pears at RG...really? Rex Ryan was a bad/wrong hire as his last winning record as an HC was four years previous. He blamed all the losing on his QB and GM, who was drafting mostly defensive players at his request. This bozo went on to take one of the premier four-man fronts in the NFL and switch them to a 3-4 while asking his all-pro pass rushing D linemen to drop into pass coverage. These are just a brief synopsis of each HCs stupidity as I could easily go into greater detail of the morons who have been head coaches in Buffalo before McD. This is by far the best head coach the Bills have had since Wade Phillips and he has had to deal with what his predecessors left him. He now knows he needs a franchise QB and that Taylor isn't the answer. The really great thing is the Bills have an extra #1, #2 and #3 pick in the 2018 NFL draft and I can see the team trading away Glenn, Taylor for more picks. Give the man a chance to build the team in his vision going forward.

When the dust settles, I’m mad, and you should be too...
Nihilarian replied to McBean's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't trade Shady at this point. Glenn is overpaid. Wood is overpaid. Incognito underpaid. Let's not forget that Cleveland made that trade with the Eagles and they got Wentz. The Browns have two early first round picks this year. 1st & 8th. Another thing is that the besides the Bills the Browns, NY Giants, NY Jets, Cardinals, Denver and perhaps Jacksonville will all be looking to land one of those QBs. I just hope this new scouting staff can properly evaluate the QB prospects this year. -
Are the Bills bad or just not really good?
Nihilarian replied to PlayoffsPlease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This team is a quality franchise QB away from the playoffs. Even with a not so great right side of the line, McCoy has enough to be great with a better QB. -
No question Eli goes to Jacksonville and is back with Coughlin. They will run the ball, play great defense and ask Eli to manage the game. The current Giants coaches didn't set the offense up to suit Eli and it showed. McAdoo was Rex Ryan like in setting up "his" offense and like Rex is a big reason as to why he will be fired. Great coaches will initially find a way to get the most out of their players on the roster and slowly build the team the way they want. Square pegs into round holes will never work. Buffalo has been employing that same run-first philosophy the last few years and the difference is that things kept changing year after year. Greg Roman sets up a great rush offense that leads the league in rushing two years in a row. Now a new regime comes in and changes up the blocking scheme to now a middling rush offense with mostly the very same players. Even Marrone, Hackett got the Bills #2 in the league in rushing by running up the middle 70% of the time. On defense, they find a great defensive coordinator in Schwartz who was a perfect fit for the players on the roster and then hire a clown who wants to change from what worked so well. Just think that he was a man who thinks he can take a roster suited to run a 4-3 with some of the very best D linemen in the league. Then switch to a 3-2 while dropping those pro bowl D linemen into pass coverage instead of rushing the passer. Eli might initially work out in Buffalo but he is a declining player and the Bills already have a younger. cheaper game manager. They need the next Jim Kelly. To those that may not know it the Bills actually ran the ball more then they threw it in most of those great SB years. Thurman Thomas was about 70% of that offense back then.

The team needs both a QB and a top line to protect him and there really is no reason not to accomplish both fairly quickly. Looking at this past draft McD knew who he wanted and drafted them. Those first three picks are making an impact and with a new GM, scout team they could do even better. Through week 5 PFF grades the Bills line at #22. 22. BUFFALO BILLS Average offensive lineman grade: 57.0 While Richie Incognito is among the top 10 guards in the NFL once again, the rest of Buffalo’s line has been unable to come near to playing at his level. The unit has played well in pass protection as they rank seventh in the league with a pass blocking efficiency rating of 82.2, having allowed just 38 pressures on 171 pass blocking snaps. However, the issues come with run-blocking, where basically everyone but Incognito has a poor grade so far. The Bills run more outside zone plays than anyone in the league, leading the NFL with 76 attempts, but they rank just 17th in yards before contact, averaging just 1.06 yards on these plays. https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-by-average-grade-week-5

Hypothetically if Giants release Manning
Nihilarian replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yep, and the list of players on IR this year for the Ginats is 17 players and growing. Nonetheless, they lost the first 5 in a row to the Cowboys, Lions, Eagles, Bucs and Chargers. Manning is stinking it up and I kinda doubt a change of scenery will improve him at this point. I'd rather Kirk Cousins or a top 5 rookie in the 2018 draft. The only way I'd think about signing Eli is if his brother would come to Buffalo to coach. -

I'll second this. I'd rather a rookie over an older QB who couldn't win with OBJ, Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard and Evan Ingram. Manning is 2-9 this year. Besides, he just got benched for Geno Smith -

Both Greg Roman and Anthony Lynn running Roman's blocking scheme had the Bills #2 in rushing attempts, #1 in rushing yards, #1 in rushing TD's and #1 in yards per rushing attempt. Lynn had more rushing TD's 29 vs 19 and a better YPA 5.3 to 4.8. Still, the 2017 Buffalo Bills are 11th in rushing attempts, 11th in rushing yards, 12th in TD's and 16th in yards per average. This might be mostly the same players all around on offense. Just not the same run blocking scheme or play calls. Dennison might be the OC but Juan Castillo is the run game coordinator and O line coach. For me, the guy that needs replacing is Juan Castillo as he isn't doing good enough in either of his jobs. In other words, he sucks. The Bills need to find their run game really fast to save both the QB from getting killed and defense from being on the field all game...or this season is over. -

The problem is that the offense has been starting slow all season and the OC usually scripts 10-15 plays to start the game. Those clearly aren't working very well. The other problem is the rush offense was #1 for the previous two seasons and is now 18th which is close to worst in the league than the best. -
Richard Sherman Calls Out the Bills
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not in my opinion. Taylor played poorly enough in that Saints game to be benched no question. McD didn't bench him for the Charger game right away so it leads me to think he talked it over with his offensive coaches who most likely told him that Peterman was ready. Those are the people that are a joke to me. Dennison has done nothing to improve the passing offense and in actuality, the offense has gotten off to slow starts every game. Those first scripted plays haven't gotten the job done! Then talk about the pass rush on Taylor in that Jets game that was never accounted for by the coaches. They didn't change up the offensive scheme when they saw Taylor had no time in the pocket. Juan Castillo is the run game coordinator and offensive line coach and he is not doing a good enough job with either. The rush offense went from 1st the previous two seasons to 18th this year. Greg Roman was better than either of those two and Anthony Lynn was better than all three. Dennison reminds me of Rex Ryan in that he needs players that fit "his system" rather than putting his players in the best position to make plays while molding the offense around what they do best. If this team is intent on drafting a top rookie QB I sure hope they hire a top OC who can develop him and build a proper line to protect him. -

This bozo told McD that Peterman was ready and he wasn't even close. Juan Castillo has got to go too! Tyrod doesn't "fit" his scheme kinda like that pro bowl D line didn't fit Rex Ryan's scheme. I'll be happy to see a new offensive coaching staff next year! -

NFN but the team needed to see what Peterman could do and now we all know. The thing is, who told McD that Peterman was ready? I think Dennison and Castillo are gone next year. -

Now since that Jets game, every team that plays Buffalo now will look like the new SB Champs.
