  1. We went into last season with the EXACT same problem

Guys got hurt at offensive positions

We did not have depth at certain positions

    The offense still improved

For some reason people just cant seem to understand that your not going to be 3 deep at every position on a football team

Too bad he went in the 2nd round and we needed linebackers

At least the Bills tried with Harvin last season. I hated the choice of him, but it was at least an attempt to address the receiving corps. Watkins, Harvin, Woods and Clay with Shady in the backfield and Hogan as a 4th WR sounds a lot better than Watkins, Woods, Lewis/Hankerson?, Clay and Shady with Lewis/Hankerson as the 4th. Plus there's the whole "guys get hurt" thing.

I can't reasonably see where the offense got better from last year to this. It's the same group except for a worse WR corps. They've had a year's experience in the system, but they've got less offensive talent now than at this point last season.

3 deep at every position? Please. The 3rd WR is usually considered a starter (and certainly sees more playing time than a FB these days). The Bills are deficient there. Their OL will start 3 quality players plus two guys that shouldn't be in a starting lineup going into training camp. The Bills had injuries last season, but Glenn, Incognito and Wood stayed healthy. What happens if one of them goes down this season? How's that OL going to look then? An OL with five starting level players can weather some injuries. An OL with three quality players can't afford to lose even one of them.

This isn't about unrealistic depth, it's about fielding starting level players. A weak receiving corps and weak right side of the OL is particularly concerning at a time when the Bills are trying to find out what they have in Taylor. I have my reservations about him, but I don't like sending him out at such a disadvantage. It isn't going to help his development or help him succeed.

The first game is still months away so I haven't given up hope that the team can add some help. It sure needs to at WR/TE and OL.

  2. Well if I remember what i watched correctly, Jim Dray isn't a Lee Smith-bad pass catcher. He is a bit faster and a very underrated addition to the team. Willing to bet he will see a ton of playing time this year. If Clay goes down, I don't feel as bad.

Really hoping training camp is the last chance for Chris Gragg, he has had years on the team to develop and hasn't really improved. Time to get another receiving tight end prospect developing. Was keeping an eye on Vannett in the draft this year, but can't complain about not spending a pick.

Braxton Deaver a UDFA from Duke, had a good tryout with the Panthers. Wonder if the Bills come around sniffing during camp.

Overall, think the situation is improved a little bit over last year. Don't sleep on ClayDray. More concerned over sammy getting hurt.

I'm from Cleveland and live in Buffalo so I root for both the Browns and Bills. I've seen Dray play for the Browns. He's serviceable, but that's pretty much it. The OP is correct. The TE position is very, very thin after Clay and it is something to be worried about - especially since the WR corps is so thin after Watkins and Woods. I'm not sure who the 4th WR/TE option is after those three. And what percentage of time do you want a FB on the field where you wouldn't need one? There's got to be someone else you can depend on and I don't know who that's going to be. I'm not even getting into the situation the Bills would be in if, God forbid, one of Watkins/Woods/Clay were to down with injury. I'm really hoping they get some help somehow, someway before the season starts.

  3. I go with the game on 10/30 against NE. If we get a W in the first game without Brady then this game will loom large. When was the last time we swept the Pats*** in the regular season? This would be huge for us, hopefully after winning more than a few games along the line before and then hopefully after to make it to the playoffs.

Agreed. 10/30 against the Pats with Brady.

  4. I'm ok with a mid round pick being a situational pass rusher. That's an important role.

Full time starter would be great but as settling goes I'm ok with that option

I think this line of thought often gets lost in the typical post draft exuberance. People see nothing but upside as they learn about the players their team drafted and get emotionally attached to them. But the draft usually progresses from getting guys you expect to help in major roles to guys you expect to help in lesser roles to guys you don't count on, but who have traits that could push them into one of the first two categories. The 4th round is not a bad place to get a player from that second category and situational pass rushers on the DL are important to every team.

  5. wow, who pissed in your corn flakes? The guy put some solid fact based opinion out there, and you put out a douchey retort back.

Spiller was a decent #2 back (better in chan's scheme) that was overdrafted by no fault of his own. I think we all agree that the pick could have been better used elsewhere as the Bills have a maddening habit of overdrafting RB's and undervaluing the idea of developing QB's.

That said, Archer is a Spiller-esque type player for the league minimum. That is a good risk to take from Doug, Rex, Russ, and whoever else.

    👍🏼
  6. LOL. I think you're giving Spiller too much credit. Maybe twice or 3 times the player he is.

    CJ Spiller, 6 seasons:

Rushing: 704 carries for 3,433 yards. 4.9 ypc. 12 TDs.

Receiving: 192 receptions for 1,434 yards. 7.5 ypr. 8 TDs.

    Dri Archer, 2 seasons:

    Rushing: 10 carries for 40 yards. That's 4.0 ypc. 0 TDs.

Receiving: 7 receptions for 23 yards. 3.3 ypr. 0 TDs.

People like to dump on Spiller here. He wasn't worth the draft slot the Bills picked him at, but he's a decent rotational back - not the bum some people act like he is. I was selling him short saying that he was only 10 times the back Archer is.

  7. But he already stated he will miss time...can't that get back to the team?

Some poster (even a very credible one) on a message board stating something vague is not likely to get picked up by the general media. Something specific might at least lead to media people asking questions about the specific. Something specific could also get him pinpointed. That's when crap could hit the fan for him specifically.

  8. So in other words he is just like CJ Spiller.

The people in this forum will probably expect him to be the rushing leader and future HOF inductee.

Spiller is 10 times the player Archer is.

Makes you wonder what the Steelers were thinking drafting him in the 3rd round?

Just looking at filling a need and a player's measurables, I'd wager. It's easy to talk yourself into picking someone in that case.

  9. Not a huge fan of Clayton, but there isn't anything he's said which isn't true. The schedule will be tougher and they'll be starting at least 2 rookies in their defensive front 7.

I agree with this. The Bills had a nice draft, but they lost a lot of talent - even if some of that talent wasn't producing due to scheme, motivation or whatever reason. Their biggest moves were retaining some of their free agents. They'll have to rely on better use of the talent they have, familiarity with the schemes implemented last season and development of players to improve.

  10. This.. I was excited at first, but then saw a tweet that his longest return for the steelers was 38 yards. I can't find it now but either way that isn't too promising. My buddy who is also a Pitt fan said he couldn't find holes in the return to save his life. Here's to hoping his vision improves!

    Edit: There it is.

    KICK RETURN

Year Team G Ret Yds Avg Lng TD 20+ 40+ FC FUM

    2015 Pittsburgh Steelers 8 14 354 25.3 38 0 10 0 0 0

    2014 Pittsburgh Steelers 12 9 161 17.9 23 0 4 0 0 0

I'll echo that assessment. My wife is a Steelers fan so I see a bunch of their games every season. When I saw Archer get the ball and run his speed just jumped off the screen. It really wowed me. But it was amazing how little he did with it. He doesn't look like a football player out there. Just no football skills - and he is an easy tackle, too. He's a tremendous tease because all you can think about is what he could do if he could get the ball in the open field, but it almost never happens. He doesn't take a good angle, he doesn't find a hole, he gets arm tackled at the line, etc. It was actually frustrating for me to watch him play because every time he touches the ball it looks like he could do something amazing, but never does.

I could move a lot of these a couple of spaces either way. The interesting thing about ranking the QBs was the stratification. Franchise QBs at the top, then very good QBs who can get hot and carry a team, followed by good QBs who have never been able to push their team over the top, followed by young QBs with high potential, then risk/potential types, then stopgaps and guys you want to replace.

  12. Agree that just looking at OJ the football player he is one of the best ever. Maybe second only to Jim Brown.

However, not unlike Pete Rose the football player is also a person who has a life and impact beyond the field. I don't think his jersey should be officially retired. However, as a means to avoid controversy it should also not be assigned out until after OJ has passed on. To me this seems like a balanced approach to the issues.

Wow. That's a well thought out and well reasoned opinion. I totally agree.

  13. At no point was Bradford looking at walking away from the game. That is BS. He wanted to go to another team that didn't have another QB to challenge him. He's a hypocrite and he should thank every star in the sky and any Gods that he can think of that he was good at college football because his career in the NFL isn't much more impressive than mine.

Barley, you make good points, but they frame the argument that they are insulted to play at the lower wage. If a person feels it is too much of a risk to his health, then just retire. I don't fault nay guy who retires young like the SF Rookie the other year if he does not want to take that risk. I thought it actually took a lot of courage, and even gave back without argument the bulk of his signing bonus. I understand your point though and appreciate the opinion.

I want to clear up something because I think we are arguing two different situations. At this point in the conversation I thought we were talking about whether or not he would continue to play AFTER his contract in Philly ends - be that if he is cut after this season, gets traded next offseason or plays through 2017 in Philly. I was not talking about him walking away prior to the 2016 season. He was always going to have to play somewhere in 2016. The only question was where. He tried to force a trade and it didn't work. Sorry for any confusion I created. I didn't meant to frame players who've made a lot of money turning down offers as "insulting", just that they aren't worth it to them - especially players with injury histories. I remember Urlacher talking about turning down a one year, $2M contract and choosing to retire. He was careful to say that $2M was a lot of money, but it just wasn't worth it to him because of health reasons and what he'd already made. That's all.
  14. The crazy thing about the logic of "how can he play for 7-10 mil/yr, when he made 100 mil is he'll never make 7 figures again most likely.

Negotiating is fine, but these egos they will regret in 10 years. I make a very nice living as I'm sure many of you do as well, but to have the opportunity to keep the seven figure trail going to be completely retired for the back half of your life enjoying your family, volunteering, and doing things you believe in without worrying about money is crazy.

As,e for Fitzy. Negotiate as long as possible, see what you can get in a contract, but even a Harvard grad is not going to get 7-10 mil for the next two years.

There's a big difference here. The wear and tear on bodies and brains in the NFL is a factor. Once you've made a whole lot of money - NINE figures in Bradford's case - things like concussions, CTE and other injuries are big considerations. $100M and walking away healthy might look a lot better than $110M with potential health issues.

  15. The new KO rule is that touchbacks will now come out to the 25 yd line. That change may affect a team's strategy on KOs as a result.

Teams may now decide to not kick the ball into the end zone so that may put more of a premium on KO returns, thus the signing of Archer.

    Archer also returns punts.

He could also play some RB and WR.

He's a HR hitter for sure.

The knock on guys like him and Goodwin is that they are too slightly built so they just don't hold up tot he NFL punishment.

I'm sure that you're right about kick offs. Teams will still try to eliminate return opportunities by dangerous KRs though.

Funny thing comparing these two "home run hitters". Goodwin has 3 career TDs, all long receptions in 2013. Archer has zero career TDs. I was surprised to see that, especially with a strong armed QB throwing the ball. Your point about players like them not being able to stay healthy is a big part of why they've both had such little production. The other is that they seem to be much more athletes than football players.

  16. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25480755/key-nfl-dates-for-2016-franchise-or-transition-tag-deadline-is-march-1

July 15: 4 p.m. ET, deadline for any club that designated a Franchise Player to sign such player to a multiyear contract or extension. After this date, the player may sign only a one-year contract with his prior club for the 2016 season, and such contract cannot be extended until after the club's last regular season game.[/size]

    Thank you.

  17. All he has to do is stay healthy and BAM! He's already an upgrade over Goodwin.

They're pretty much the same guy. Incredibly fast, often injured and non productive in the NFL. You are probably on to something comparing the two. They're probably each other's competition for a roster spot as a KR and end of bench WR/occasional RB. Whomever stays healthy gets the spot?

  18. If the team HAD to lose either Gilmore or Tyrod, which loss would be more devastating? Would you like to go back to EJ? Ya think that would work? :)Seriously, you are quite the good poster. I mean this but I suggest that you open your eyes, if even to a squint.

Wow. You really had to work hard there. Sorry, but pretending that our choices are:

    - Keep Gilbert and go back to EJ or

    - Lose Gilbert and keep Tyrod

is pretty ridiculous. Reality is that Gilbert has earned his next, big contract over the last four years. Tyrod hasn't earned his yet, not with one good season. Gilbert will likely get paid very soon. Taylor will get paid next season if he earns it. The Bills can keep both if Tyrod earns his place.
