  1. Genuine question: what's the difference between rolling money over and structuring a contract so that same money is in the cap hit next year?

It seems to me they are structuring the contracts the way they are (with minimal cap hit this year) for a reason, and intend to make a few late value free agent signings, as Whaley said they were going to do before it all started. Or the money is being freed to give Taylor a good faith raise.

As it stands now, they should have over 40m of available cap in 2017, so while as a QB and a CB the TT/Gilmore contracts will be pretty large, they will still fit.

To answer your original question: Nothing except accounting, unless you wind up needing the extra cap space in the current year. It's all about flexibility. Deferral of cap hits does benefit the team because of the annual increase of cap space. Cap space has been going up by about 8% a year on average so every cap dollar deferred is discounted, on average, by 8% per season of deferral. That adds up.

Right now the Bills are looking at $36M in cap room in 2017. That is assuming a team base cap of $166M. Any rollover would be added to the $36M and any new contracts (Gilmore, Taylor, 2016 & 2017 draft classes, etc.) deducted. The franchise tag for QBs in 2016 was $25M so things might still be tight if Taylor has to be tagged.

Really good look at Cordy Glenn's contract extension. Expected to earn 87 percent of the deal.

Holy crap! The OTC link isn't updated with all of the guarantees stated in that article. Spotrac mentions them in theirs. Basically it's a three year deal with two option years. Incredibly player friendly. Wow.

That should be required reading for everyone on here.

  3. Lets stop talkin about TTs dumbass agent. He is a non issue.

    How do you figure?

Because Taylor's best chance to get paid is to do well this year. His only option to get paid more now is to either agree to a lower end, easily exited long term deal (which he does not appear interested in) or to hold out and try to get a bigger one before this season starts. But if he holds out, then he hurts his chances of doing well this season. Thus the conundrum for him and his agent at this point in time. There really is no good option for them other than Taylor preparing and performing as best he can in the 2016 season and getting the best deal possible next offseason.

  4. That's a huge gap from the initial reports

Yeah, you always have to wait for the full details to come out. Here's the OTC breakdown:

Brilliant move by OBD to pay Cordy's jack **** in 2016. Love me some $8M in cap room.

It is pretty standard for contracts of this size to be structured like this. Player gets cash upfront and some additional cash guarantees early in the contract and the team gets to kick a nice chunk of the cap hits into future years. Oh, and Cordy is getting paid very well this year. He already got a check for $16M and he's getting $3M more in salary in 2016.
  5. It'd take me all night to point out everything wrong with this post so I'll just hit some high points:

    - Joe Thomas is the best LT in the NFL. He's a wonderful technician, which is great for a LT. But you want to put him at RT and run a power game behind him. That would not work well.

    - The Browns won't trade him unless they get a big premium. Think a first round pick plus another pick. The Bills aren't in a place they can - or should want to - do that.

    - The Bills don't have the cap space for him and he wants his money.

I'm just going to call it there.

The Bills want to be a power run team. Which many people see as a mistake because the NFL is a passing league. I think as defenses shift more and more towards the nickle and emphasizing more on the cornerback position rather than the linebackers, there is a window for great running/defensive teams to take advantage and make a little noise.

If the Bills are going to be a run first team, I want them to be able to run the ball at will like the Chiefs teams under Vermeil. Willie Roaf, Will Shields, John Tait, etc. They were able to run the ball at will because their offensive line was so good. They made a star out of Larry Johnson.

While the Bills were able to run the ball very well last year, they were not able to run the ball at will and in all situations. Right now we have the left side of the line locked down and we have been trying to land Slauson, but I would rather just go get Joe Thomas and put him at RT.

If we were to get Thomas we would have a Pro-Bowl caliber player at 4 of 5 positions on the offensive line. Thomas is a future Hall of Famer and having him on the right side would make it a hell of a lot easier on Miller or whoever else might be at right guard. He would probably be the best RT in the NFL. You would have one of the best lines in the NFL and I think a team that could challenge for more than a playoff spot this year.

I know people will have reservations. How will we fit him under the cap? The first thing I would do is cut Jerome Felton. I think we got him as he started to decline. He missed a lot of big blocks last year. I don't see him beating out Little Gronk who I feel Roman will find more uses for. I would also let Graham go to make this happen. He is on the decline and although it would be nice to have him in the secondary, I think having a dominate offensive line and adding one of the best lineman in the league will be more beneficial for this team going forward.

Thomas has a cap hit of $9.5 million in 2016 and $10 million in 17'-18'. I know that is a lot but considering what tackles are getting now, it is a bargain for him. I also understand that is a lot to give a right tackle, but he is a special player and for what we are trying to do on offense, I think he could help us get to the next level.

Another benefit is when his contract ends you may be able to resign him. Even though he will be 34 he will probably be still good enough to move into LG for Incognito and play at a high level or even still be good enough to play at a high level at RT.

It would probably take a second round pick, maybe a little more. I know that is a high price but for a team that hasn't made the playoffs in 16 years I would be willing to do it. Go into the season with a dominant offensive line and the ability to impose your will in the run game and have a true offensive identity.

  6. It's an acknowledgement that TT deserves starter money, even if you can't afford to pay him the full boat. It's also some insurance if Taylor sustains a career ending injury, he has some money to live on. It's really a gesture of goodwill. It shows the Bills want to do right by him, even if they won't give him a long term deal now.

Here's a $3MM bump for 2016. Show us you are worth more and we'll unlock the vault for you.

    This is just embarrassing.

  7. Link

It comes as no surprise that these allegations are made. In a case so widespread I personally find it hard to believe that more people knew about this than we'll ever know. I almost didn't start the thread because inevitably names and allegations will get thrown around and it will be difficult/impossible to prove anything. Paterno's son has already started in with rhetoric.

There was a lot there in this case to indicate to me that Sandusky's activities would have been difficult to hide. These are mainly the quantity and the length of time but there are other factors as well. I think if all the facts about what happened, who knew, when they knew, etc. came out it would be the most instructive thing possible. I don't think that will ever happen.

Where'd you see one of his sons defending him? It wasn't in the link. I'd think that it is unlikely that he will get any defense from his sons unless they're protecting their mother or the family fortune. All of his children are adopted and it was heavily rumored that Jerry Sandusky plead out because at least one of his sons was going to testify that he'd been abused by him. Rather than have that happen he took the deal.

  8. Does it appear that the Jets are panicking over their contract stance with Fitz that might lead him to leaving? It doesn't to me. Whatever option they have to take, Smith or whatever pedestrian qb they can find, they are willing to take that route. What does that say how they value Fitz? It's certainly not a ringing endorsement.

The Bills have recently been in this qb quandary situation. They signed a virtually retired and out of shape Orton just prior to the start of the season. Was it a good option? Not necessarily but it was the best option available. It wasn't too long ago that Buddy made it clear that Fitz was over-paid and needed to take a pay cut if he were to stay. He left.

My point is that organizations constantly make talent value judgments expressed through contract offers on players. Especially after watching Fitz's game with the Bills in Buffalo their GM's position seems very reasonable and understandable to me.

The Jest certainly appear to have a value on Fitz. And Fitz certainly appears to have a price to play. Sometimes those two positions change as options become limited, time grows short or outside pressure increases. Sometimes they don't. If they don't, then Fitz isn't playing for the Jest this season. If they do, then he may. We will just have to wait and see.

  9. Mike Adams completely underachieved at OSU as a 5 star recruit and was absurdly over drafted - terrible pick then and terrible pick now. No idea what steelers were thinking other than overvaluing measurables. He was also an off field headache. As I recall he drove to Pittsburgh to tell them how much he always wanted to play for the steelers and they fell for it. Pretty sure he failed his combine drug test or something. Should have been a 7th round pick.

That they were desperate or O-line help. And we know ourselves that when you are desperate for help in a certain position you talk yourself into guys..... Kujo.... even to some extent EJ.

Yup. As an OSU alum I watched pretty much every game Adams played there. My wife is a Steelers fan. Adams is highly talented, but his mental lapses are horrific. You can't do that at the NFL level. He will string together a dozen plays where he looks great. Then, just when you are ready to jump on his bandwagon and declare him a stud, he makes a WTF!? mistake that has you looking at his jersey to make sure it's the same guy. Every game is like that. You can't have a LT that makes 3 or 4 boneheaded plays a game. I ripped him before the draft and I ripped him after the draft. In fact during the draft I remember showing my wife that while he looked good in the clips they showed of him when he was picked, he also got beat horribly in a highlight of another player taken near him. He's never going to be consistient enough to be a starter in the NFL. Never. Probably his upside is as a backup swing tackle. But he wouldn't be my first choice there either.

Here is one analytics site that likes what the Bills did. While it ranks their draft as 11th best overall they put the Bills in a statistical tie for 2nd in terms of predicted added wins from this draft. They also have the Bills moving up to 9th overall as a team. That all seems reasonable. I liked the Bills draft very much from a need-filling perspective and I loved the Shaq pick even aside from need.

  12. With what team? Options are pretty much dried up.

I was thinking Denver might wind up a logical choice. They haven't seemed interested in Fitzy at all. Just wondering if he might not look a whole lot better to them after seeing the Sanchize for a few games. A lesser contract with a much better team than the Jest might interest Fitzy more as a shot at a ring may have real value to him. Lynch isn't anywhere close to getting on the field and their other option right now is Siemian. Dallas might be another option after the inevitable Romo Injury. I can't see Prescott being ready and they have nothing else. He will have options if he's patient. And why wouldn't he be patient at this point? The Jest can't even pay him what they're offering (much less what he wants) without roster moves and it's not like they have any other options either.

  13. Sure, if a QB goes down Fitz will be a hot ticket. I was speaking about the present though.

Yeah. But I was wondering if chasing a ring - or even having a playoff run - might be worth something to the guy. I keep coming back to this: Why accept a below market value deal with the Jest? Get your money or chase a ring. Who knows what QB goes down. Hell, by week 3 he might look damn good to Denver. They won a ring with a decrepit Peyton Manning and Brock Freaking Osweiler. You can't tell me Fitzy wouldn't have a chance.
