I’m siding with over the cap here over spotrac. Not sure how a guy who had 1 tackle all season has any likely to be earned incentives.

OTC is the site NFL teams use to look at info from other teams. Spotrac has better usability for some stuff, but OTC has better info and a very good calculator for cuts/restructures/etc. If there’s ever a discrepancy you can bet OTC has the correct info.

Thank god. He knew he was cooked if he didn’t take less.

I know folks say cutting him was impossible, but players don’t take pay cuts unless they are on the block.

OTC shows that he had $6.435M guaranteed for this season. So to move a bunch of his compensation into incentives the Bills upped the guaranteed money to $8.855M and kept him on the roster. If the Bills had cut him he’d have gotten his $6.435M and then signed a contract with a low guarantee and high incentives. So basically he just signed that with us. And we get the bonus of continuing to spread out the signing bonus we gave him 2 years ago. I’d have preferred to just move on, but this is a fair deal if we think he can get closer to who he used to be.

what??!  Allen is THE FRANCHISE  if you restructure anyone it’s him

The team is waiting on Allen’s restructure because of PR. It would be a lot tougher to blame all these moves on being in salary cap hell if people were to see the numbers after his restructure. It’s a common tactic.

Waiting on the details. Miller didn’t just give up the guaranteed money he had coming to him. I suspect he got a very nice signing bonus as part of this renegotiated contract.

But why would they move on from them?

I think Denver might want to move on from older vets like Sutton if they’re doing a big roster reset. Just guys that won’t be there when the team is ready to compete again. Open up cap space and get some picks to reset the roster and to help trade up for their next QB.

Agree.  But I meant more generally with respect to the purge today.

I think the Bills moved up this vet purge by a season. Likely that was due to Miller and White’s significant injuries. So it could’ve waited a season, but it was coming. And I think it was the prudent move. IMO it also is a vote of confidence for McDermott. You don’t do this and then fire your HC in a year. You have to let him see the rebuild through. So I think he’s here for at least a few more years unless he loses the locker room.

so if not paying for these things it in turn lowers the amount over the cap?

They would not pay for them if they released him without the post 6/1 designation either. I was just clarifying that even though his contract is carried on the books as if he is here until 6/1, the Bills don’t owe him any of that money.

Yep.  I really wish it was different but I think the Bills are doing the right thing.

I didn’t think they had much choice. Two seasons in a row lost to injury and no real sense that he’d be back to 100% this season.

Wait, why post June 1? Wasn't he due a roster bonus if still on the team next week?

Yes. The team does not pay that or any other non-guaranteed money.

    Just now, Ed_Formerly_of_Roch said:

If they had cut him now would the cap hit have been the full $10 mil this year?   But they do get to take the full $10M saving this year?

The contract sits on the books as if he was still on the team until 6/1. The only difference is that the team is not obligated to pay work out bonuses, roster bonuses, etc.

Can somebody explain to me how a restructure works in the last year of a players contract?

It means they converted some of his salary into a signing bonus and added at least one void year. We are just deferring $2.5M of his cap hit to next season. Without seeing the details I would guess that they converted $5M of his salary into a signing bonus and added one void year.

If you get him, our defense is better and New England is worse.

If you dont, great! You forced New England to pay.

I think that's a no brainer, given the need at safety.

There isn’t really a W to get here though. If it’s a reasonable contract, then NE matches. That’s good for them. If we overpay him and they don’t match, then we overpaid for a very good safety. That’s at least a small L for us. I just don’t see how it helps us.

Dugger is and has been my biggest FA wish this season from a fit and need stance.

That said, this makes zero sense. Why should Beane spend his time negotiating a contract here? To make New England "possibly" have to pay a little more?

Look at their available cap and then look at ours. There is no offer we can make they can't match several times over. Not only that but reportedly he's looking to get paid BIG. We can't afford big.

Also do we really want to pay a safety $12-$15M a season? The transition tag pays him $13.8M so he will likely be looking for that per season. He’d be a great player to get, but that’s tough - especially when NE will likely match it anyway. I agree that I wouldn't waste my time doing their work for them.

    Probably Allen or Burrow.

The AFC is better than the NFC, and Mahomes, Allen & Burrow are the top 3 QB's in the AFC.  Both Burrow & Allen have rosters than can win it all.

Hope it's Allen, but it wouldn't shock me if Burrow won next.

So far Mahomes has lost three playoff games - two against Brady and one against Burrow. So Burrow deserves to top the list. Not saying Allen or another QB can’t do it, but he’s the only one still playing that has.

I figured we could put all the pundit mock drafts that we hate here to express our collective outrage :)

I'll start.  This one from Lance Zierlein just dropped.  It may be the worst I've seen so far.  Trading up for...well...wait till you see it.  I saw a trade up, got excited, then, vomit.  Additional vomiting caused by who the Bengals and Chiefs added compared to who we added.  There are so many other players available for the Bills who will be more impactful at CB/S, DT, and even WR that were passed up here.

Why would anyone care about a mock draft - especially one done before free agency even begins?

    @GregTompsett

Random side note. Since Bates was a UDFA, if we had simply not matched Chicago’s original offer and let him go, BUF would have gotten no draft compensation. Instead they got 1 year of starting play, 1 year of backup depth and a 5th round pick

That’s all true, but I’d counter that his level of play as a starter was below average and the above came at a cost of $9M in cash and cap space. Not the end of the world or anything, but no one should be thinking this was a W for the Bills. Especially when they could’ve kept him in 2022 for less with a higher tender.

Looking around the league, it is REALLY hard to find a team that makes a lot of sense from the stand point of being an NFL starter.

From a team need perspective, Steelers are the only one I can look at and Wilson likely makes that team better on the field, and that is more about how bad the Steeler QB's are than it is about how good Wilson is today.   With the defense and run game, Wilson doesn't have to carry the offense kind of like the early days in Seattle when they went to back to back SB's winning one.

However, from a culture stand point, Steelers feel like a bad fit and I have a hard time seeing Pittsburgh being interested.

So I don't know where he goes and gets a chance to start other than to say keep the seat warm for a rookie.  And you got to imagine teams are going to be concerned after the Broncos said they would rather have an $85M dead cap hit than see him QB another game for them.  I mean, thats a pretty huge statement and from a team that has Sean Payton as an offensive HC.

The other aspect is this: What if Wilson performs decently this season on his one year, $1.21M contract? I’m imagining a Daniel Jones kind of scenario where the team does well and wins a playoff game behind a QB that is just good enough. Then you have to have to pay him or go find another QB somewhere while the fans lose their minds. That would be a real possibility with the Steelers.

So, with the Bates trade, we have 11 picks now, right? Beane should be able to shuffle a few of them for earlier picks, possibly an additional 2nd.

    https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-Value-Chart.asp?RequestTeam=buf

Looks like 143 for Bates so add that. Just doing the math in my head, if I add up all 9 of our picks from the 3rd round and beyond I get 284 points, which is equivalent to pick 62. Obviously that’s not going to happen, but I’m hopeful we can use some of the late round picks to maneuver.

You don't lose you're starting LT unless you have a plan to have a starting LT

This. As much as Dawkins’ weight scares me I think an extension makes sense. Limit the guaranteed money to this season and next. That way we can get out if the weight becomes a real issue.

So I know the Bills are expected to get a comp pick for Edmunds in the 3rd.

I see there are comp picks in all the other lower rounds too at the way down to the 7th.  Wondering what does a team have to lose to only get say a 6th or 7th round comp pick?  The water boy?? Chain gang?

And I assume the Bills have no shot at any of those??

No, it’s set. The Bills are getting a 3rd for Edmunds but that’s it.

We have no idea who will be selected at #143 and how they will turn out in the NFL.  So we can’t say this has very little value.  Plenty of examples of guys selected in the 5th who have turned out to be quite valuable.

Sure. Anything can happen. But that is ignoring the actual odds of success. This is not a typical draft. The players staying in college for NIL money has gutted this class. Pick 143 in 2024 is not the same as pick 143 in 2020 or 2028. That’s my point.
