Every pick has value in moving up. According to the modern Draft Trade Chart, it's worth 14 points compared to 10 points each for each of our 2 other 5ths.

We used a 4th to move up 2 slots in Round 1 to get Kincaid last season. In a vacuum, you could say it's not all that important. But that pick could be the deciding factor in a deal that could yield us a difference maker that fits what we're looking for or not.

Having the pick certainly doesn’t hurt. Getting it is better than releasing g Bates for nothing. But it really has very little value in this particular draft.

    It's Pick 9 in the 5th, so it's a high 5th - way closer to a 4th than a 6th (especially when you consider comps).

Getting a high 4th for a guy who's been mainly a Backup would have been a big ask.

Pick 143. It’s actually very little value in this draft. It’s very shallow due to the impact of NIL (and Covid to a lesser extent). My semi-educated guess is that the team didn’t see him as an answer at C and they had their long term answers at the OG spots so they got something for him rather than spend another $4M on him this season. This wasn’t a bad move. Matching Chicago’s offer a couple seasons ago was.

    Afraid of concussions?

I used to be, but he hasn’t had those issues in some time. It’s just age and salary now. He will be 32 next month and he said he wants to come back for 2024, but it didn’t seem like he was thinking beyond that. Having him here this season is all well and good, but I wouldn’t want to see the Bills drop more money on him and count on him beyond that. We can draft a guy in the mid to later rounds and groom him this year. If that works out, great. If not, then back to the FA market.

He also hasn't officially been released as of yet, so he could still be released with an injury settlement when it officially goes through. We'll have to wait and see on that.

Find it slightly interesting that we interviewed Braelon Allen and Audric Estime at the Combine. Guys who are considered 3rd or 4th Round Picks. With just Cook on the roster, I wonder if they're considering a RB a little higher than expected? Especially after the release of Hines and both guys being bigger and stronger runners that would compliment him well.

No on the injury settlement. Completely unnecessary and will not happen due to contract structure. This is literally why teams insist on including roster bonuses like the one in his contract.

Absolutely yes on RB. Adding another quality RB is a very big need. Last season Cooks had 10 games of relatively light usage under Dorsey followed by very heavy usage for 9 games (including the 2 playoff games) under Brady. He broke down before the end of the season. No way can he handle that kind of workload for a whole season. They have to have another RB who can share the load if they’re going to be as run heavy as they were under Brady last season.

    Saves 3.4MIL

$1.4M in cap space savings realized this season (due to cap hit from signing bonus). But overall we do save $4M in salary and cap space.

I think he had to be medically cleared to be released without an injury settlement so I suspect #1 is probably not the case.

But the reality is that he probably wasn't going to be nearly the same player in 2024 that he was prior to the ACL tear.

I know many of us feared that Beane would do the wrong and "sentimental" thing with Hines........like he did when he allowed guys who screwed him with poor effort like Vernon Butler and Star Lotulelei to hang around with pay cuts..........but this really was an easy "no brainer" level decision to cut an injured RB.

He has a $500k roster bonus due on 3/18/24. One of the big reasons these are included in so many contracts are cases like this. The team can pay it or not at their discretion (unless it is contractually guaranteed), so injury doesn’t prevent them from waiving the player.

Isn't his cap hit like 30 million or something for like 3 years?

Edit - 85 million dead cap hit 😳

Brutal. Glad it happened to an AFC team tho. Denver will have to designate it a post 6/1 cut to make it work. They’ll have dead cap hits of $35.4M this season and $49.6M in 2025. OUCH!

It's a strange combination of sweet, syrupy, medicinal, and floral - almost like someone accidently combined potpourri, Jagermeister, a bouquet of flowers and simple syrup in a blender and then upon staring too long in revulsion at this horrifying iridescent green liquid... came to the incomprehensible conclusion... WTF, might as well drink it.

Switching to a 34 would be the second

I disagree. Switching to a 3-4 is way “sillier” than just getting rid of Milano. We would have to revamp the whole defense. We just paid Oliver and he doesn’t fit. Rousseau doesn’t fit a 3-4 at all. He can’t be a stand up OLB. Miller does (and obviously has), but who knows if he will return to form. And he’s probably only around one more season anyway. Also Bernard probably doesn’t fit either. So moving to a 3-4 would mean getting rid of pretty much everyone on the first two levels of the defense - including Milano. So that way, way, way worse.

I haven’t watched enough of the WRs that are legit targets to have an opinion. But that list tells me to look at the tape for these guys. Elite traits are always desirable, but the tape has to justify the pick.

I don't put much stock in Combine performances. If the WRs worked against the DBs, as they do in the Senior Bowl practices, I think it would be a lot more meaningful. In fact, I'm happy Franklin and Coleman had bad Combines. They may slip due to that. That's what happened to Cooper Cupp, and the Rams got a steal because of it.

Something to think about for those who do put a lot stock in Combine 40 times:

This is what I said would likely happen when people were worried a while back about Beane's comments.  His contract was just too easy to cut for cap issues, he was always going to need to be cut, but I do think they would still bring him back cheaper if he wants to be back and compete in camp.

He seems like a guy you only want to bring in if you have nothing vested in him. Who knows how he’s recovered from his accident? You can’t have guaranteed money or real cap space allocated to a player in that situation.

The legal tampering period starts the 11th and FA the 13th so he has a little time. And I know he said he plans on being under the cap by the end of next week.

But I have Football ADHD dang it!  Make some moves so we know what's what!! 🤣

I am very interested in the roster decisions the Bills have in front of them. Obvious, simple restructures are going to happen for some players like Allen. No suspense there. But they’ve got a lot of decisions to be made on players. That’s the interesting stuff.

    28. Buffalo Bills: Chop Robinson, DE, Penn State©Dan Rainville / USA Today Sports Images

An edge rusher is high on Buffalo's wish list with the potential departures of Leonard Floyd and A.J. Epenesa. Robinson fits the mold as long, projectable edge rusher.

    DE's before 18:

    8. Atlanta Falcons: Dallas Turner, DE, Alabama

    11. Minnesota Vikings: Laiatu Latu, DE, UCLA

    15. Indianapolis Colts: Jared Verse, DE, Florida State

    5 WR taken before 28:

    4. Arizona Cardinals: Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State

    6. New York Giants: Malik Nabers, WR, LSU

    14. New Orleans Saints: Rome Odunze, WR, Washington

    17. Jacksonville Jaguars: Brian Thomas Jr., WR, LSU

    26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Keon Coleman, WR, Florida State

I think this mock shows why the Bills are going to want to trade up or back. 28 is just not a good place to sit.

I have never heard of this! If true (which I’m not doubting) that is awful and should be punished! Was there any fines or penalties for this?

I linked an article on it in another post, but I can’t find anything about how it was ever resolved. This happened under Gase. The Jets fined him for missing practices with the injury and then cut him after he elected to have surgery they did not approve. They claim that the wrong MRI they sent to their doctors was a mistake. His agent said that they were going to file grievances to have the fines refunded and his salary paid. I don’t see anything about how it got resolved though.

With the recent release of DB Jackson, the Pats have 101 million in cap space.  That's an absolutely crazy number!  If you were the GM, besides disbanding the team and keeping the money for yourself, what would you do?  The Pats have 54 players under contract for 2024, so they don't exactly have a crazy number of holes to fill.

For me, I would do the following:

    - Since I don't have a QB, I would possibly look into other teams with cap concerns and maybe pull a Brock Osweiler trade to take on some salary cap, and acquire picks.  The Pats already have the #3 overall pick and are in prime position to draft a QB, but more picks for a new Coach and philosophy is always a good thing.

    - Spend money in the trenches.  No matter where the Pats go at QB, build up that offensive line and defensive line.  Spend money on FA's with front loaded contracts that pay the majority in the first 3 years.  That way, when it's time to pay your skill players in that time, you will have money again to pay them.

    - Get that short term player that can sell tickets.  I think I would go after a Barkley or Henry, even with Stevenson on the team.  I want someone that can put butts in seats while the team finds it's new identity.

    - Check the temperature on Kirk Cousins.  If you want the capacity to win now, Kirk is more than good enough to support a team into the playoffs.  I don't see him leaving Minnesota, but it can't hurt to ask

I know those are all pretty basic ideas, but that's what I got.

Honestly, Cousins or Fields plus Evans and MHJ would be a pretty damn good start to turning things around there. Gotta bring back some players like Brown and Onwenu too.

Every other Head Coach at some point has said 31 teams end the season disappointed. It is an ultimate NFL cliche.

They do? I’ve certainly heard it before but do t remember hearing it from HCs much. Certainly not as much as I’m hearing it from McDermott this off-season. Do those HCs also accept “bad luck” as an excuse from their players or assistants when they fail?

I mean he also said he expects to win a Superbowl. So you have to consider what he said in the round.

You can’t be serious. Every other team’s HC says the same thing - and I don’t see any of them laying the fault of their failures to improve toward that end at the feet of bad luck. Again, is that an excuse he’d ever accept from a player or coordinator?

Let’s be clear on the point. McDermott has not improved. His playoff record against 5-7 seeds is 5-0 but against 1-4 seeds it’s 0-6. All but one of those games (a loss against Jax) was with Josh Allen at QB. Allen wasn’t a top 3 QB his second season, but he has been since. Yet the Bills haven’t beat a single team capable of winning a championship in the playoffs. That’s not bad luck and I cringe at people when the parrot that load of BS and give McDermott yet another pass.

Just wondering what you’d like to hear?  We lost cause we are losers who clearly can’t coach?  And then cry like a B word and ask the fans forgiveness?

It’s sad that you think that’s the alternative. Blaming “bad luck” is a loser’s mentality. How many of his players get to use bad luck as an excuse for their failures? If the answer isn’t zero, then that’s a problem. Using it himself is ridiculous. A good leader has to focus his team on what they can control. In general Id expect someone in his position to give a general indication of where he and the team need to improve and what he was going to do to make that happen.

I have only noticed “ void years “  on the Bills salary cap the last 3 years or so.. although it may have been used elsewhere in the League  before that ..of course the signing bonus being spread out over the term of the contract has always been around … which is a similar way of spreading out money already paid to the player to future years

Im sure the players association loves  it , as it’s a way to have the teams spend more money on players than the Salary Cap should allow …

In these days when the cap is going up 15 percent a year , I expect it to be a tool used more often…

Agreed. Also more teams are now owned by billionaires who made their money elsewhere and want to win. They have plenty of cash to throw around so now we have more teams looking to maximize their competitive position through maximizing their spending.

  21. An example:

A team wants to sign a player to a 1 year, $7M contract, but wants to lower the cap hit in the current season. They could pay him $2M in salary plus a $5M signing bonus and add four void years to the one year deal. (5 is the maximum number of years that a signing bonus can be spread over.)

His cap hit would show as this:

    Y1 - $3M ($2M salary + $1M signing bonus)

Y2 thru Y5 void years - $1M each (signing bonus)

It’s important to point out that once the contract voids all remaining cap hits would accelerate into the current season. So the cap hits for the player would be $3M in Y1 and then $4M in Y2.

However if the team were to extend the player before his contract voids, then the $1M cap hits would stay in place. They would only accelerate once the player was no longer under contract.
