Why what was the reasoning for a 4th and no the third we were all told we'd get for Edmonds? Anyone know?

The NFL will not disclose their formula. Overthecap seemed to have it nailed down, but not on that pick. Edmunds missed some time this season and playing time factors into the formula. Total speculation on my part, but that may have been it. He was calculated as giving us the lowest 3rd round comp pick - other than the ones given to teams that have minority GMs and HCs hired away.

Like where? Truly asking since I didnt give it much thought, and most teams are a worse situation than Buffalo. What good team needs him?

He’d be an upgrade for the Bengals, Dolphins, Colts, Chargers, Rams or Tampa.

    You certainly could.

But at 27 and already sitting on likely $15M cash, staying here on a well-run team with a great QB is probably worth that $3M, as opposed to landing on... the Raiders, let's say, and having a horribly un-fun year on a poorly run and coached team, with no QB. And then be out of the league in 2025.

I'm always in favor of players getting as much cash as they can, but sometimes there is a bigger picture that will earn you more in the long run as opposed to just this year.

    Good teams need players too.

He could do that but I'm betting he knows in the long run he makes more staying in Buffalo and taking small salary cuts each year.

He likes Buffalo (remember how happy he was when he bought his home) and HAS to know he signed an overpaid contract.

His contract is through the 2026 season and if I was him, I would take the small pay cut.  If he goes to a new team and has a bad year

or gets injured again he could end up playing for less than $5M every year going forward.

This is the last season with guarantees in his deal. He’s under contract for two more after that, but the Bills can easily move on at any time after this season. Now with the addition of Kincaid he may not get the passes or playing time that he used to get. That would not help his value. This is hypothetical because the contract move looks like a straight restructure. But if I were him and my choices were $5M and free agency today or a cut in pay, I would walk.

Maybe. But how many guys have left teams for perceived "greener pastures" only to end up miserable and full of regret? He may think that the Bills are his best fit. We may never know. Hopefully, the decision ends up mutually beneficial for both parties.

How happy Knox is here now - especially with the addition of Kincaid - is an open question. He’s overpaid at $13M so that probably helps a lot in that regard, but that might change if he were asked to take a pay cut. It looks to be a straight up restructure so that looks to be a moot point.

You should be embarrassed by that comment. Knox is a good, starting quality TE that can play in line and flex out to the slot. He may have been a little overpaid by the Bills, but he’d be signed within days if he hit the market today. And he’d be a good starter for that team.

I think he will keep the guaranteed roster and option bonus this year and take a salary cut.  He's scheduled to make $4.9M in salary.

I'm guessing that will get cut to $2M or so and "maybe" some NLTBE incentives in return.

Certainly possible. I don’t think I’d do that if I were Knox though. I’d take my $5M and go play for another team where I’d make a lot more than $2M.

If Cincy traded Higgins and their 1st rd pick, how much could they move up?  Would the Giants take that deal?

I’m not sure of Higgins’ value, but you’d have to think they could make something work, even if they had to sweeten the deal. One of the worst kept secrets in the NFL right now is the Chargers desire to move down from 5. Not sure they’d want to go all the way down to 19 or take Higgins rather than draft Nabors, but if they were interested then they could do a deal. Cincy might have to sweeten it a little, but you’d have to think they would be in striking distance.

This seems like posturing to me.  They will get a deal done.

I seriously doubt it. Two reasons:

    1) No contract talks for a year.

    2) Cincy tagged him the instant we entered the tag window. If they wanted to keep him, they’d have waited until the end of the window and worked on a deal. That was a clear signal they were going to try to trade him. Or just keep him one last season, but probably trade him. In any event, they don’t want to sign him to a big contract.

Yes, key word there is "reworked". If it's a pay cut like Von took, Id be happy about that. Let's see how much this saves...but solid move to make

His co tract had a $5M roster bonus that guaranteed last year. I’m sure that got converted to a SB. Not sure what else they did tho. Some of his salary could’ve also been converted. Or maybe a pay cut offset by additional guarantees and/or incentives. Just have to wait and see.

I understand that but Pittsburgh has zero skin in the game.  What happens if a QB they didn’t think would be there lasts until their pick?  Or let’s say Pickett looks decent in training camp.  Or Pittsburgh starts 0-2 with Wilson starting.  Feels like Wilson is trying too hard to show people he still wants to play.  Even $5m from Pittsburgh shows some commitment towards Wilson.

That makes no sense. The exact same amount of money hits Wilson’s bank account whether the Steelers pay him $1.2M, $5M or $35M. Every dollar they save this year can go to Wilson next year if he balls out. Or not if he doesn’t.

Weird.  I get that Denver is on the hook for $39m, but if I’m Wilson I’d want the Steelers to commit more to me than the vet minimum.  Steelers can move on or cut him if he struggles at all without thinking twice.

This is due to his Denver contract containing offset language. Whatever he gets paid this season by another team gets deducted from what Denver has to pay him.

Also the Steelers play at Denver this year.

it would be pretty surprising if we didn’t agree to terms with multiple UFA’s by Wednesday.  Some players take their time, but many others / agents have already had discussions and know who is interested and the places they’d like to go

If things shake out that quickly, then sure. I guess things have gone more quickly since the legal tampering period was instituted. I just don’t expect the Bills to make any of the big ticket signing we will see on Wednesday.

  13. No. I posted this thought earlier today. Other than Allen, there’s no elite player on the Bills. They have some really good ones - Oliver, Milano, Cook, Dawkins, Kincaid and probably still Diggs for another season. But no one besides Allen is keeping HCs and coordinators up at night.

Hope this clears things up for the confused.  I am not going to do the research, but I am guessing Knox is the highest paid TE2 in the NFL.

Not really. Actual player usage is what is important - and right now their usage is different. Which player someone labels TE1 is immaterial. That was my point, not that a specific player deserves that label.

Edited to add: I think the long-term plan is for Kincaid to develop as a blocker and become a do-it-all TE. That will pave the way for the team to move on from Knox. But Kincaid is not there yet.

There is no debate. Kincaid is TE1.

He’s certainly a better receiver than Knox, but he hasn’t learned to be an effective blocker yet. That limits his usefulness to the slot while Knox can play in-line. Until Kincaid develops as a blocker those two play different positions, even if they’re both labeled TEs.

I think the problem is if they trade him or cut him theres a huge dead cap hit. Realistically , what could they trade him for?

He still has value as a WR but the new team would take on a $19M salary. Maybe a 4th plus. A 3rd if we are lucky. I think it’s becoming more of a situation where we need to part ways because the relationship is deteriorating. That’s tough when you’re revamping a position group. You don’t want a disgruntled star player to negatively impact the youth.

The cap hit is bad. But the other side of that coin is that keeping him adds $19M to his total cap liability. Trading him involves a difficult, but manageable short term cap hit. Long term it’s probably worth it, especially if  we get the Diggs from the second half of the season. Or worse.

Joe Marino from Locked on Bills does some really good work. I watch a lot of his stuff.

He did a video the other day where he played the role of Brandon Beane and took the wheel in Free Agency. Broke things down pretty well in a realistic fashion, why each player fits, and included forecasted numbers from Pro Football Focus.

Here's the video with Cliff notes below of the moves he suggested:

    Re-Structure QB Josh Allen - Saves 24m

    Re-Structure TE Dawson Knox - Saves 6m

    Re-Structure DT Ed Oliver - Saves 3.94m

Extend OT Dion Dawkins - Saves 6.5m

Extend CB Taron Johnson - Saves 4.4m

    36.6m Under (+10.2m on 6/1 from Tre)

    Re-Sign DT Daquan Jones - 2 yr 12m

    Re-Sign DE AJ Epenesa - 3 yr 20.25m
    Re-Sign CB Dane Jackson - 1 yr 3m
    Re-Sign CB Cam Lewis - 1 yr 2m
    Re-Sign RB Ty Johnson - 1 yr 1.2m

Sign DT Shelby Harris - 1 yr 3m
Sign DT Greg Gaines - 1 yr 2m
Sign DE Carl Lawson - 1 yr 3.5m
    Sign S Alohi Gilman - 2 yr 6m
    Sign S Ashtyn Davis - 1 yr 2m
Sign C Brian Allen - (Forgets to say contract)
Sign OT Kendall Lamm - 1 yr 1.5m
Sign WR Noah Brown - 2 yr 7m
    Sign WR/KR Devin Duvernay - 2 yr 6m
Sign RB Ezekiel Elliott - 1 yr 2.5m
    Sign LB Del'Shawn Phillips - 1 yr 1.5m

I think that this is reasonable and that it will be the general direction that the Bills take. But it highlights my concerns with the team. The roster looks solid, but other than Allen it lacks difference makers. Some quality players will be on the roster for sure. Oliver and Milano on defense. Cook, Dawkins, Kincaid and Diggs on offense. But none of them are keeping HCs and coordinators up at night. Allen is going to need a lot more help.

I've posted a thread on this topic and irt was met with major criticism. I still believe he is a top WR in the NFL when properly motivated. My take is this he quit on the team. He has been griping about the way the team is run for 2 years now. I think he has a problem with Mcdermott's coaching style and possibly his personality . He has seen his coach lose to the Chiefs in the playoffs 3 years now. One of which was a heartbreaking, stunning loss when they had the lead with 13 seconds left in the game. IN the Philly game. this past season, he took himself out of the game on several occasions on third down with the game on the line. The offense is totally different and much easier to defend without him on the filed. People tried to tell  me he was winded or hurt. He is a well conditioned top athlete and prides himself on offseason training. The guy has a work ethic unmatched by a lot NFL players. He is not going to take himself out of the game because he is out of winded. You can see it his body language. He wasn't going all out for balls and had several uncharacteristic drops in the final 8 games of the season. Was he injured? He was never on any injury report. Correct me if i am wrong but that is illegal in the NFL for an injured player to practice all week and play without being on an injury report. His brother has been dissing the Bills and is probably constantly in his ear to get out of Buffalo. I simply believe he has become disenchanted with the team and wants out of Buffalo. The only way to do that is to force a trade by not giving your all in games and by giving hints you want out. This is the only thing that makes sense to me.

I think the injury reporting rule is that teams are required to report any injury that prevents a player from practicing or practicing fully - or is otherwise significant. He could’ve been dinged, but not so much so that it prevented him from practicing.

That said, it’s been obvious that he hasn’t been happy here for years. It’s entirely plausible that his effort and desire to stay on the field aren’t what they should be. He could not have been happy with Brady’s focus on the run game. It’s probably best for the Bills to move on ASAP. My prediction is that either the Bills trade him or things get worse with him and the team. He’s been quiet, but that won’t last forever.

Of course he's going to do the best for the team.

But if you think he and Von didn't have a discussion about future plans for the position before he gifted over close to 9m in a cut, choosing to turn them into incentives that he didn't have to do - in regards to whether he'll have a good chance to hit them or not before he agreed to it - I think you're kidding yourself.

He's going to insure he's not 100% putting all his eggs into the Von basket and has insurance there. But there's a big difference between covering our butts and completely closing the door on any possible chance Von could start before seeing him in Training Camp.

I would be very disappointed in Beane if he gave Von Miller assurances of playing time or that he would not bring in another quality DE. I just can’t see that happening. Von should earn his time on the field just like everyone else. I would also be disappointed if Beane relied on Miller to be a quality player this season. The Bills have to have another viable starting caliber DE in case Miller does not round back into form.

That's just for this season. It doesn’t even address our DE needs in 2025 and beyond. The odds that Von Miller will be here in 2025 are close to 0. We need someone in the pipeline. It doesn’t have to be a Mack or Bosa, but we need someone worthy of playing time.

He doesn't create separation like he did even in 2021.

He’s falling off to be sure. I expect him to be a top 32 WR this season, but I have no such expectations beyond that. We need to restock the WR position and the draft is the place to do that. Well, that and the trade market if we can swing something there for a younger player.
