Diggs, Shakir, Hollins, Samuel, Shorter…even Kincaid (WR/TE). Nice WR room.

Face it…we need an interior O lineman or a safety.

    Deal with it.

Still need an X. Also DE is a huge need unless you think Epenesa is a quality starter. I sure don’t. Guessing those are our first two picks, in either order.

Shakir more X then slot or the rookie we draft?

Thinking we are drafting an X. We can work in the new X in this season as he earns it. Next season Samuel can take over Diggs’ spot. In the near term Shakir, Samuel and Diggs can be on the field together.

I'm happy with that move. But it further underlines to me that the need in the draft is for a vertical threat, downfield receiver.

Agree. Still need an X. If anything Samuel seems redundant with Diggs. Not that they can’t be in the field together, but they’re a lot alike.

I don’t know much about the Panthers or Commanders. Is this possibly just another Deonte Harty signing?

Better than that. Consistently a 600+ yard WR. 27 years old and a known commodity whereas Harty was an upside play.

i could see pennix there at 28 and seattle calling us to trade for 28. give us this years second, third, and next years 1st and a conditional.... i'd bite in a heartbeat.

doe anyone realize how under the cap we are for 2025?!

I can’t. Beyond it being a massive overpay on Seattle’s part they don’t even have a second round pick this season.

The last two years Wallace has been significantly better than Elam.

Yeah. This is why a vet min (or close) deal makes sense here. Douglas and Benford starting on the outside. Tauron at slot. Cam is pretty much a slot backup. That leaves just Elam backing up the outside. Wallace would help there.

You can only restructure once per season, and Josh will certainly get restructured again next year. It shouldn't have to be explained that restructuring every player on the roster for the maximum amount isn't financially prudent, and can quickly create problems in the future. Just because Beane chose a measured response does not indicate that "Pegula is cheap."

There is no rule against restructuring a contract more than once a season. Nor would players or teams want there to be one. That said, I’ve never seen it done. It would point to incompetence on the part of the team - or perhaps an extreme circumstance.

The Bills chose to restructure Allen’s contract to the extent they did for a reason. It is where they want it and I would be shocked if they did it again this season.

He doesn't need to get the okay to re-structure Diggs. There's a rework of his deal that can be done that doesn't require his permission. It just seems to be something we don't want to do.

As for a Miller type thing, fat chance. Especially after seeing Ridley's contract today.

Contracts including restructure options at the team’s discretion are much more common these days, but not all contracts have them and some of the ones that do have restrictions. Diggs’ contract probably does, but there’s no way to tell for sure without seeing it.

They've actually done a lot. We had a LOT of things to take care of. So we couldn't spend too much in one place. There's just not much on the external front. Going into Free Agency - the plan in my mind was to take care of major holes that could leave us to address WR in the Draft. To that end we've filled:

    Starting Safety 1 - Re-Signed Taylor Rapp

    Starting Safety 2 -

    Starting 1T DT - Re-Signed Daquan Jones

Starting OG Replacing McGovern switching to Center - Re-Signed David Edwards

DE3/Possible DE2 in the event Miller is done - Re-Signed AJ Epenesa

And we addressed some other depth things with inexpensive options like QB2 (Trubisky), LB3 replacing Dodson (Morrow), WR5/Special Teams Gunner (Hollins), Safety 3 (Lewis). There's still things like the other Starting Safety spot, rotational DT's behind Oliver and Jones, RB2/3, and a couple backup OL.

But the idea that we haven't "maximized" what we could do, based on the amount of money we had and the major things we needed to get done isn't true in my mind. We covered a lot of the major holes. Even with the "backing off a lot more" as you put it, we're effectively at zero when it comes to space we have.

There’s been some activity and hole plugging - especially depth - but there’s yet to be a single move that improves the team from last season. The Dawkins extension and Jones re-signing are helpful, but those are just keeping status quo.

In "spending cash", you're still writing contracts that include cap space in the form of other years or void years beyond this season. That cuts into later caps and then before you know it, we're in the same spot we are this year and the year before. You do that every year and every year is like the last two.

Like I said, if there's an effort to limit spending this year - it's with creating the ability to be bigger players in the following years in mind.

Sure. But again, there could be a middle ground of taking our medicine for past spending and competing now. I expected the Bills to be limited in free agency, but this is more severe than I was expecting. I thought they’d maximize what they could reasonably do, but it looks like they’re backing off a lot more than that. That all said, free agency only officially opened 3 hours ago so the book isn’t closed. Besides, there’s nothing to do now but see how it all plays out.

If there is a push to limit spending this season, I doubt it's an edict from Pegula. I'd imagine it's more a scenario of taking medicine this season so that in the coming years, we're not in the situation we were in last year and this year and can operate more freely.

You can take your medicine and still spend some cash. I’m not saying we should be wasting cash and cap space at the start of FA. I’m not a proponent of that. It is just that this is a severe decrease. We went from one of the top cash spenders to 17th currently. To me that looks ownership driven. No GM wants to throw on the brakes like that if they don’t have to. They get paid to win and it’s tough to do that without spending.

The other possibility is that Beane is paying back/saving up against his spending constraints. He has a budget from Pegula. It is possible that he’s saving toward another spending ramp up. I guess in either case I’m just disappointed because it will be difficult to really compete in the near term if spending is substantially cut.

I love Diggs he’s been fantastic for us. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little bitter about how we essentially traded the best WR in the NFL who is considerably younger than Diggs as well.

The thought of Josh with an elite young WR is so tantalizing.

But I’m no longer bitter . Why? Because Jefferson wants more than $30 million per year . That’s insane money and he’s not 10+ million dollars worth more than Stef.

He might just want off a team going nowhere without a QB. You know, like Diggs. If that’s it, then I don’t think it would have been a problem here.

  13. There are some teams that can take a chance on a 30 year old (this season) vet coming off an ACL injury, but I don’t think the Bills are one of them. He’s not likely to come here cheaply enough to take the chance.
