1. It'll be a great test for Losman. If he makes some decent throws and doesn't turn the ball over, we'll easily win. Our defense is way too much of a match for Brian Griese and co.--we're going to get great field position, get some turnovers, etc. JP just needs to take care of the ball and we'll win this one. If he doesn't, Tampa's big-play defense will make us pay dearly.

  2. I'm new to Sunday ticket and DTV. I just noticed on my DTV main menu screen an icon for "sunday ticket shortcuts." I'm assuming these will take me directly to the games tomorrow. But right now when I click on them, they give no info and say something in parens about a possible error (like "check to see if you get this channel, etc."). Should I be worried? Is anyone else getting this? I want to make sure there are no problems come 1 PM tomorrow. thanks.

  3. I too am here in Bengal country and lots of my buddies are Bengal fans, so I've watched/listened to a decent amount of their games the last couple years. That color guy is hilarious esp when Chad Johnson or someone is making a play. The play by play guy is giving the commentary, and that color guy is just yelling in the background "Go Chad! Go Chad!"....Always makes me laugh that he doen't even pretend that he's trying to be impartial. I haven't got to listen to a ton of the Bills games on the radio the last couple years, but I get the impression that Van Pelt is kinda like that too.

I used to listen to that Cinci radio team driving through southern Ohio to/from school on certain Sundays--and that color guy is hilarious. His homerism is, frankly, endearing.

As for the dynamic duo of Tasker/Criqui, I wish I could say the same. Criqui's terrible. I think Tasker's still learning the ropes--but so far his game analysis has been pretty sketchy and lacking in any insight. Of course, you can say that about 95% of the color commentators on TV.

  4. By the way, Nance played for Syracuse in college. He was a Pat (and later a Jet) in the NFL. And his listed hometown is Indiana, PA.

You sure you're not talking about this guy?

I have no idea what CBS broadcaster Jim Nance's background is. But from the interviews I've seen of him (e.g., on Leno once), he's more interested in doing golf and the Winter Olympics than NFL Football. Thus, I would never take his predictions--which are probably hand-fed to him by someone else--seriously.

  5.   Oh and Lamont Jordan looked terrible.  He must not have known the way to the Raiders weight room.

    434589

I wouldn't say Jordan looked terrible. When he was with the Jets, I always thought he was an average back--almost a fullback. Whenever he returned kicks for the Jets against the Bills, it was laughable. But I was surprised last night--he had a few nice runs.

  6. I guess I'd expect a pessimistic post by someone named "Henry Fumbles."

But you'd be surprised how much playing a full game and getting into a rhythm makes a difference for a RB and o-line. WM didn't get enough carries in pre-season to do that (except maybe the Bears game, where we grinded out our running game against a tough defense). I fully expect him to get into that rhythm on Sunday and run for 100 yards.

Are you kidding? There's no way we lose to Oakland! (otherwise, nice job) <_<

  8. Thank you God.

I really love winning both ends of a doubleheader..Charlie Weis no longer with the Pats and now directing the Irish...That was a wonderful offensive performance--the best in a long, long time for Irish....Brady Quinn ran that offense to perfection...watch the Pats draft him in round 2 or 3 in 2007.

JR--don't count those chickens just yet -- I think Saturday is going to be one heck of a game.

    429681

I agree. Any Michigan/ND game is going to be tough--especially now that the Irish have Weis. I fear that bumbling Lloyd Carr is going to be easily outcoached on Saturday--but I'm hoping Michigan's superior talent carries the day. I think it's going to be a shootout.

  9. Do we know what Clements' injury is? It looked to me that it was a "stinger"--the way he was opening and closing his hand. If that's the case, he can play through it.

But even without Clements, I'm not going to count the Bills out. After all, Greer has had a heck of a preseason...and then there's that perennial pro-bowler we have playing FS who can move to corner in a pinch. I'm sure one of those guys can do an adequate job on Andre Johnson.

  10. It's his first year at Pitt.  Look at their schedule, they will end up with a winning record.

    2005 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

    9-3-05 NOTRE DAME

    9-10-05 at Ohio

    9-17-05 at Nebraska

    9-24-05 YOUNGSTOWN STATE

    9-30-05 at Rutgers (Fri.)

    10-8-05 CINCINNATI

    10-15-05 SOUTH FLORIDA

    10-22-05 SYRACUSE

    11-3-05 at Louisville (Thur.)

    11-12-05 CONNECTICUT

    11-24-05 at West Virginia (Thur.)

    429530

Ahh--the new "power house" big east football schedule. Pitt could end up going undefeated the rest of the way. As for ND, it's going to be lights out at the Big House this Saturday.

  11. Wasn't Moore shot in the leg during a carjacking attempt?

    428166

I recall him being stabbed, not shot, in the leg--but I could be wrong.

The guy I loved was Jeremy (or Jerry?) McDaniel--the undrafted WR who had a great year in 2000 for us and then was cut the next year. What ever happened to him?

Or, same time frame, Raion Hill (Henry Jones's replacement at strong safety)? That guy was one of the worst cover DB's I've ever seen. I think he was cut when we drafted Coy Wire (aka, the prototype of the perfect SS for Gregg Williams's 46 defense).

  12. I don't believe anyone should expect miracles from JP and thus am willing to be patient, near term, with him.  However, I find his post-game quote that "Things never go as planned" disturbing.

    428110

I interpret that as meaning, "we're not going to perfectly execute our gameplan," not so much as dispensing with the gameplan. In other words, "we're going to make (unplanned) mistakes." I think it's a good attitude to have--I don't like seeing Losman coming off the field visibly upset at every little mistake he makes. That bad body language is terrible for the team.

  13. I live right in downtown Pittsburgh.  I wanted to be as close to work as possible.  I am able to walk to work in the mornings, but because I live towards the top of a friggin hill, I catch the shuttle back in the evenings.

I plan on watching all or most of the games this year at Damon's.  I hear there's a Bills Backers group that watches all Bills games at the Damon's on McKnight Road...I may give it a shot..

    425886

We looked at places downtown (and in the east end neighborhoods), but couldn't find anything nice in our price range. We even checked out those new lofts in uptown near Mercy Hospital--but the neighborhood was too scary. In any event, we ended up in a nice neighborhood...but also on top of a steep hill.

Thanks for the Bills Backer info-- I'll have to check it out one of these Sundays... when I'm not watching the game at home on my brand new direct TV/Sunday Ticket!!!

  14. wire is a lock for a roster spot.......TSW's fav whipping boy is very valuable to the bills and extremely under-appreciated on this board.......

    425230

Is he really the ST "ace" that the media has made him out to be? True, I've seen him in on a few tackles here and there. But I've never seen him do anything spectacular. Instead, I recall him making game-changing errors on special teams (a key roughing-the-kicker penalty comes to mind). At this point, I'd rather see his roster spot go to a safety like Baker or even another WR like Wilson. Wilson has caught my eye on ST in the preseason--he could be Wire's replacement as the new "ace."

  15. Okay guys, this is my first official "real" post, so I hope its worthy..

In regard to Mike Mularkey's decision to play the starters longer than most teams do, especially in the last preseason game...I just don't agree with it.

I know he's saying he wants the offense to get into a rhythm, and wants JP and the starters to gel just a bit more, but I think it's a foolish decision.  I really don't think that another half of play is enough to convince everyone that all of a sudden the offense has gelled, and that all is well.  The bottom line is that with a "rookie" QB, we are going to have some bumps and bruises along the way, and that the timing thing will only come in, well, time.

I think Mularkey should do like the great majority of the other coaches, and play the starters a series, maybe two, and sit them down.

I'm a glass half-full person, an eternal optimist if you will, but I just am scared to death of us sustaining an injury to a key player the week before the opener.  And do you realize how the media will absolutely tear Mularkey down if something like that happens?

    Go Bills

    425830

I agree--nothing to be gained by increasing playing time...but but I'm not too worried. I think what MM means is playing a series into the third, which JP has done a few times. My guess is if we see any semblance of a running game, the offensive starters will be out at half. And I doubt the defensive starters go into the second quarter.

By the way, smuvtalker, what part of Pittsburgh do you live in? I just moved to Pittsburgh (fox chapel area) about two weeks ago.

  16. Denny is also becoming a special teams ace...in the Mark Pike mold...good wedge breaker and blocker...

He is a really good athlete...

    421629

Agreed. Of course, you'd hope for more out of a second round pick. If he's going to be just a ST ace and not a viable DE, then he should be paid accordingly. I can't imagine he's going to be asking for much money.

  17. My one major disappointment in the game was the penalties.  Everything else was easily fixable and most of it will come with more reps.

    407550

Even the penalties you can swallow--if you look at the box scores from around the league, a lot of teams racked up 10+ penalties in their first pre-season action. Not an excuse, but just shows you that it's got to get better!

For me, my biggest disappointment was the play of the WR's. Too many dropped passes--the WR's weren't helping JP out at all. Even I've got to admit that Reed--whom I've been a big defender of the last two years-- is on his way out. I'd rather take Fast Freddy than Reed.

  18. Well, the report says TO was asked to leave.  Now they can't fine him because they kicked him out.

    404157

I'm not sure about that. If a guy violates team rules and he's kicked out or suspended, the team, I believe, can still fine him. Of course, it's not going to be the daily fine the team could impose on a player for missing training camp---but they might be able to fine him one large sum.

  19. I'd love it if they cut him and no one wanted to sign him.

    404123

I would prefer if the Eagles kept him for all 6 years of his contract, and fined him/withheld salary for every day out of training camp/not with the team. Then, after six years, he would be a washed-up nobody.

  20. Hey Buckey, are your lists in order? If so, quite the shocker for both RB and WR lists! I'd put LT and Alexander abouve Willis and Julius Jones. And Harrison's run at being the #1 fantasy WR ended about 5 years ago. I like Moss at #1. And I love Evans on your list--but I think you could draft him in the 8th or 9th round, I'd imagine.

Here's my tentative RB and WR lists:

    RB:

    1) Alexander

    2) LT

    3) Priest

    4) Corey Dillon

    5) Kevin Jones

    WR:

    1) Moss

    2) Owens

    3) Chad Johnson

    4) Holt

    5) Walker
