1. When we hear the press conferences this week, we're going to hear the same old things. Drew will say "hey, it was one game" and that he "can still play this game at a high level". Mularkey will say Drew gives us the best chance to win. Donahoe will say that a rookie head coach deserves some patience (even though he said at the start of the season that he's out of patience..convenient shift in words there)...

It'll be as if they assume they're speaking to a bunch of drooling idiots. In a nutshell, we're going to hear more cliches, more lame excuses, and Drew will be the starter next week and beyond.

You might want to tune out this week, cuz you're not going to hear anything you'll like.

    Or respect.

I'm not sure what else they could say. The only time I have ever heard a coach or GM concede that their team sucked and there's not shot at the playoffs, it was at the PC on their way out.

I just can't see what good can come out of anything other than coach-speak right now.

  2. Now, I could see if he didn't have any time, but on EVERY pick I saw, he had at LEAST 3.5 seconds, no?

Does anyone else think that perhaps he is suffering from Pat Lafontaine syndrome? Maybe one of those pops to the head did something permanent? That INT to Bruschi was incredible. I mean, what in the world was Drew looking at?

    117934

    1) As an aside, that whole ESPN clock on Bledsoe was ridiculous. They showed him throwing after 3.5 seconds and the announcers said, 'he's got to get rid of it well before then." Then they showed Brady, who would unload the ball after 4 seconds, and the announcers would say, "see--look how fast Brady gets rid of the ball." Bledsoe did a good job of getting rid of the ball last night---only he did so to players on the other team.

    2) What made that throw to Bruschi so bad was not that Bruschi was right there. But even if Bruschi wasn't in the picture, there were two other defenders in front of Lee Evans who would have picked that ball off. I have no idea what he was thinking.

  3. Many of you are slamming the Defense today. Don't. They really are a talented group. Charlie Weiss just has our number. Ever play Madden? Well if you do you know that if you call the wrong defense on any given play the offense will make you pay. Jerry Gray isn't good enough for Weiss yet.

    117649

I don't think the defense's poor play last night had anything to do with Charlie Weis having our number. We basically shut down Corey Dillon last time we played. There was no good excuse for Dillon and even Faulk to run the ball down our throats all night. Plain and simple: the Pats offensive line just pushed us around yesterday. They were more physical and they beat us up front all night.

I still think we have an excellent defense--but last night they layed an egg.

  4. Sunday Night Woes: In their last three Sunday night games the Bills have been outscored 90-12 in San Francisco, Miami, and Kansas City.

    A Stat from Bills Daily.com

    112749

I think the stats are misleading--I don't think playing on Sunday night is the reason we lost those games by that margin:

    1) The Miami game was close.

    2) The San Fran game was against a playoff team when we were a 3-13 team.

    3) The KC game was against the best offensive team in the league in the hardest venue to play at and we weren't very good.

I think the better indicator re. all those games is that we were on the road everytime. All road games--including night ones--are harder to win. That's what'll be the real challenge on Sunday.

  5. They're still making mistakes in play calling and time management but that'll come with more experience.

    112020

How easy we forget the era of Gregg Williams. :D Compared to Greggy, I'd say MM has done outstanding in his overall game day management (save the clock issue before the half in the last game). But, you're right, in that he'll get much better with just some more experience. I guess my point here is MM is much better in this regard after 8 games than GW was after 3 years experience.

  6. should they maybe consider putting him at FS and mving Kevin Thomas into the starting CB role, moving McGee to nickel?  McGee has been absolutely brutal as the starter opposite Clements while filling-in for Vincent, so maybe Thomas should be given a shot?

    111873

I don't think McGee has been as bad as you suggest ("absolutely brutal"). Yeah, he should get a new pair of cleats to cut down on all his slipping and falling, but he's, in my opinion, a heck of a lot better than Kevin Thomas at CB. The experience that McGee has gained playing CB the last few weeks is going to prove invaluable down the road. I would leave him in there until Troy returns.

  7. WHY THE HELL WAS FREDDIE SMITH IN THE GAME SO MUCH?????

Is Aiken not doing as well as we thought?

    111290

I think it might have seemed like he was in there more than he really was, because when he was on the field, he was either doing something bad or being made fun of by Dan Dierdorf for calling himself Freddy when his name is Jonathan.

I just hope Haddad can go if JR can't--Haddad to me seems like he could be a solid slot guy (a la Brandon Stokely).

  8. Another thing: people might have forgotten this incident. It was Moorman's first year here--I think it was during our 3-13 campaign. We were at San Diego and late in the game the Chargers returned a punt almost back for a TD until Moorman ran the dude out of bounds and then nailed him out of bounds. He was called for a late hit on the play. While that penalty might be a bone-head move for any other player, when your punter is getting called for late hits, that is flat-out tough.

  9. On the post-game interviews he said the guy apologized after the game.

    107951

That is actually a fairly classy move by Lamont Jordan. I was ticked when I saw the hit. It was a good hit, but Brian Moorman has reached god-like status--no one should lay a finger on him out of simple awe and reverence for his abilities.

  10. Tucker will be fined for the "legal block".

Don't get me wrong, I love Tucker, but it was a cheap shot. You don't cut a man's knees when the play is over and you are coming from behind. It's one thing if you are face up or square with a player to cut him, but Tucker wasn't even close. Abraham never saw him coming. It was the same thing that Denver just did last week and ended the season for...shoot I forget his name.

I don't think Tucker was trying to be dirty, he was trying to make a play, but he should know better. Abraham was defending himself. Sometimes it's easy to forget that this game is the players livelyhood. And what Tucker did could have prevented Abraham from ever playing again.

    107880

I don't think you can be fined for a legal block. In fact, that Denver o-lineman wasn't fined by the league--the league said the block was legal and let it go.

While I agree that such a block could be dangerous to a player, that is not what the NFL believes or else it would have forbid cut blocks. If the league doesn't forbid it, then it's fair game.

  11. A few problems with that theory:

    1) The Jets don't exactly play in sunny California. Last I heard, it gets windy at times in New Jersey. So, to be "out of their element" in Buffalo, is a gross overstatement.

    2) The Jets won the toss and picked the wind! So, it was to their advantage since they had the wind at their back in the 1st and 4th quarter. And yet they still lost. <_<

  12. Yes, I will admit to being concerned about all these things. But I have a "feeling".

    You know what I mean?

    107370

I hope you're right. It would be great to get the road monkey off our back against the best team in football on national TV! Talk about a confidence booster for the team and fans.

  13. This would be unbelievable. I think McGee is going to be a stud CB--especially with Vincent tutoring him. And if we can lock him up, I won't feel as bad if we end up losing Clements.

The key question is: how much cap room do we have this year? I guess the real incentive for the Bills behind doing a deal now with McGee is being able to shift some of his money onto this year's cap figure before the deadline (next week). See this blurb from ESPN.com:

"Teams must sign players to extensions by early next week to have a portion of the new money count as base salary for 2004. It is a way of using spare cap room in the current season..."

  14. And Rothlesburger played at Miami of OH, not the U of miami. What is your point?  The level of play or speed of the game hasn't phazed Roth.

    103085

Which is a good point. With Ben R's recent success, I think this changes how teams treat their rookie QB's. I think a lot more teams will be ready to throw their rookies in right away and expect them to succeed a la Big Ben.

And it makes sense--this whole, "we need to sit our rookie QB on the bench for a year" philosophy fails for a lot of QB's. Look at Carson Palmer--a lot of good it did him to sit on the bench for a year. He's making all the rookie mistakes--only he's now a 2nd year player. And for other QB's who have had success learning on the bench--a la Chad Pennington-- who's to say that he wasn't ready to start from day one? Maybe he could have put up his great numbers if he had started from day one--but we'll never know.

  15. Who do I pick this week?  I have Johnny Morton, David Patten, Plexico Burress, Derek Armstrong, Anquan Boldin, Jabar Gafney, Lee Evan, & Keary Colbert.

I need to start 3.  Thanks.

    102979

Burress and Boldin are no-brainers. Burress should have a big game, in fact.

As for your other guys, who the heck is Derek Armstrong? I would probably go with Patten since NE should be in a shoot-out at St. Louis-- but, in all likelihood, you probably won't get any points from those other scrubs. Hopefully, Burress can carry your WR corps this week.

  16. I believe it 100%.  Like AD Said, the guy knows all of our calls at this point. TV doesn't have the deep speed he had the last couple of years. Slow? Hell no, but not quite quick enough like our younger players do.

Let me ask you this....how many times this season (the NE game alone) was a Safety out of position and it led to a score?  Do you really think from a mental standpoint and knowing our D that Vincent and Milloy will make those mistakes?  Not a chance in hell my brother!  I guarentee teams are grimmacing at Vincent being at Safety. The Deep ball has all but been taken away from opposing teams for awhile!  <_<

    101902

I agree that the safety position is a problem for us. But is the transition from CB to FS so seemless that it can be done with less than one week of practice? I have no idea--but I'd imagine even the smartest, most-skilled CB needs more time than that.
