NBA/Golden State Warriors thread
FireChan replied to Maury Ballstein's topic in Off the Wall Archives
That's the truth. The defense to good 3 point shooters has always been chase them off the line. Curry can and will just take two steps back and launch it. There's nothing else you can do. Especially when over committing to Curry means an easy assist to the 4 other guys in the rotation who can hurt you from 3. -
Stats? Sure. Winning titles in college? Ask the last 50 Bama QB's.

Who should be our starting, and backup quarterback?
FireChan replied to Rocky Landing's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To be fair, we all know TT will be starter, and he should be the starter if all that's on the roster is him, EJ and some warm body. I found this poll to be unrealistic. I still like Wentz. Even if we somehow drafted Wentz, TT would still be my penciled in starter. -
Do you know that they are now living beyond their means? It sounds to me like they are living in a smaller house. And IIRC, Talley was given a position by the Bills, so I assume there's some greater financial stability for their family. Further more, do you understand the impact such a gesture has on a medical outcome? AFAIK, we don't know how much treatment he is receiving currently as compared to back then, and the change in cost. I find your backtracking from "If only some Blue Collar WNYers received such good fortune," to "I don't think the Talley's are living within their means" to be nothing short of laughable. Your original post was a healthy mix of crude, venom and an angle that the Talley's don't deserve help GIVEN FREELY BY OTHER FANS WHO THINK THEY DO. If you really "loved" Talley, you failed to show it in any meaningful way by directing such a comment to his wife. Your post was deleted because Beerball didn't want this thread, which by most posts is filled with honest goodness for the Talley's and their improving situation, to go down a rabbit hole of negativity. Frankly, behavior like your original post has a negative impact on the community on this message board, and per the TOS can be deleted for that reason, and others. I didn't expect to find out that you saying you ignored me was all for show.

I don't understand your gripe. Folks in WNY enjoyed watching a player who played for their favorite team and chose to donate money to give him a hand. Where is the irony? Also, nice Bills jab. They aren't good. Folks are fans of teams that play in the same geographical location where they either lived or grew up. How is that illogical?

WSJ: The Shrinking Shelf Life of NFL Players
FireChan replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is probably a decent thing for everyone involved. Older players who have had made enough to be comfortable are prolonging their health, and younger players will get more spots to make some cash. -
Vic C's BN piece--really rips Rex as defensive coach
FireChan replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes, but you know why that is. The expectation last year was not our defense playing well enough to give us a chance vs. the Jags. It was our defense outright winning us games. The Titans performance was closer to the expectation, strictly for the game sealing stop. As one poster eloquently put it, someone in that locker room needed to scream that this defense was not elite around midseason. But that was our, and the Bills', expectations. -
Obligatory:

FireChan replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For what it's worth, I thought that was one of the defense's best performances all year. They ended up holding the Jags to 14 points not off triple streaking TO's on our own 20, and put up 7 on their own. Not much more you can ask of a defense in today's NFL unless they are insanely good. -

Is Tyrod even allowed to change plays at the line? -
Shapiro has been writing editorials and bashing Trump for the last year, if not longer. Side note, Marco implying Trump has a tiny pecker has thrown this race into full-on craziness. What a wild ride it's become.

Vic C's BN piece--really rips Rex as defensive coach
FireChan replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To be fair, that was before his first season, and coming off a poor running defense, which is historically a weakness of a Wide 9 set-up. Also, I believe it was before we signed Brandon Spikes. Sorta apples to oranges, and the "sky is falling" crowd has a lot more material to work with seeing as we've already had a season of poor Rex D, no great or difference making FA's on the horizon, and we have quite a few holes to fill. -

Somewhere in the the middle of the Venn diagram of "thinks the Buffalo News is a worthless rag" and "thinks Rex is the worst coach of all time," someone has started having second thoughts. -

I may be prone to exaggeration, but I don't think I've seen a team give up on a first year HC as readily as the 2015 Bills. That doesn't bode well for the team "buying in," IMO. -

Do you think it's feasible to come back from where the locker room is right now, in terms of buying in? -
Teams should get a cap break for re-signing their own
FireChan replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They already do. Why punish them more, when instead we can help them by breaking up All-Star teams and SB winners? In the long term, I think a move like this hurts teams like the Jags, Raiders, Titans, Bills and helps team like Denver and NE. Is it better for Buffalo's Super Bowl odds if teams like Denver, NE and Seattle can maintain teams filled with Pro-Bowlers until they retire? Probably not. If we face Denver next year in the playoffs, do you want to be facing every player returning on their defense from 2015, or have a couple go get paid around the league, almost certainly weakening them? You already see this in the NBA. You either strike gold with a Superstar like KD, Lebron, Curry, Westbrook or you will never be more than an "Also Ran." Has maneuvering around the cap to maintain awesome players and rosters been beneficial for the Lakers, the Heat, the Thunder, the Cavs and the Spurs? Sure thing. Has it been beneficial for the Bucks? What about the Magic (who lost Shaq, then Dwight when both wanted to move onto true contenders)? Or the Kings? Or the Timberwolves (who lost Love)? Why make a change that in the long run will ensure that downtrodden teams will never contend in the playoffs, let alone for a championship title, unless they happen to draft a top 5 player? Not to mention this is basically already how it is, at least we still have "Any Given Sunday". It would just make it worse. Any Given Sunday doesn't exist in the NBA. Also, you have my blessing. Saves me from having to do it. -

FireChan replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
But doesn't that negatively effect parity? The point of the salary cap and FA is so that good to great players on a single team get spread around the rest of the NFL. NE and the like would be even more unbeatable if they could skirt the cap to re-sign players. Competing in Super Bowls and making the most money they can. And the players who would rather experience a winning season than make an extra couple million would still leave. And the teams that make the most money would have a supreme advantage. -

FireChan replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Or they could not match. Contract negotiations are tricky like that. It's a dangerous game to offer a ridiculous contract to a player that you aren't really willing to pay. It would really only happen in franchise QB negotiations, which never usually hit FA anyway. -
Teams should get a cap break for re-signing their own
FireChan replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes they are, but Freddy stated it "costs a fraction of the cap." I don't think it does. It still costs the same number of cap $'s, both soft and hard. Having a soft cap makes the practices almost apples and oranges. Contracts of re-signed players being able to go over the cap is based on their Bird rights, which you can only get by playing with the same team for 3 years. The NFL would effectively be adding a soft cap if they instituted any practice like this. -

FireChan replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Is that true? They just go over the cap, they don't have less "cost" IIRC. The NBA cap is superior to the NFL system IMO. But it's hard to compare soft cap practices vs. hard cap ones. -
I think Taylor was a little better than Orton in 2015 compared to 2014. But I wonder what Orton would've done in 2015 with the revamped offense. That was more my point.
-
It works because we had a QB that we could (or were forced to) run the offense through. YPA is well and good as a stat, but if you're gonna tell me Tyrod's 2015 performance is better than all of the QB's he out YPA'd, we'll have to agree to disagree. The QB position is more than just the numbers. Orton on his own had more GWD and 4th QCB's in 2 less games. Yes he threw the ball more. Because he was forced too. He didn't have Shady and a rookie RB phenom, he had the ghost Fred, CJ for half of a year, and the diabolical Boobie/Brown tag team. It's unsurprising Orton was less efficient that Tyrod. With Tyrod, defenses were very worried about the run. With Orton, it was a certainty that we had to pass to win. It'd be unbelievable if Orton has prettier passing numbers. He'd be a $100M man if he did. Also, didn't Miller replace Pears and Incognito replace Urbik? And Glenn had the kidney cut out and missed all of camp with Orton, IIRC.
