1.

Second, getting ready for 2005 with Shaun King? Who prepares for 2005 with Shaun King?

Third, Green had a shot at Roethlisberger and Rivers in the draft this year, he took Larry Fitzgerald instead, which meant that he had confidence in McCown.  Less than 10 games later, McCown is benched?  It makes Green look bad.

King got a raw deal in Tampa Bay. While the Bucs did eventually win a Super Bowl with Brad Johnson who's to say King couldn't have done the same. That said I think King is a career NFL Backup One thing to remember though King was far more successful at Tulane then Losman was.

That said Dennis Green might not look so foolish if he can manage to get a veteran QB this offseason. I'm pretty sure Arizona a team that has the cap room that could afford to trade for Drew Brees this offseason. They may even pursue someone like Quincy Carter, as part of Green's success was more with the long passing game vs the short.

  2. We might end up beating Pitt if they've wrapped up home field through out the playoffs and want to bench some starters. There's a chance we could beat them all but it will again come down to how the offense performs on the road. It comes down to what I said in the preseason, if we can score an average of 17 points a game there's a chance we can win each week but of course the offense hasn't been able to do that as of yet. Here's how I see it turning out:

    Sun 11/28 @ Seattle Seahawks L

    Sun 12/05 @ Miami Dolphins W

    Sun 12/12 Cleveland Browns W

    Sun 12/19 @ Cincinnati Bengals W

    Sun 12/26 @ San Francisco W

    Sun 01/02 Pittsburgh Steelers L

  3. What is the logic behind the 3rd string quarterback rule where your number 1 and 2 cant come back into the game if your 3rd is in before the 4th quarter.

    127545

I pretty sure it's because the 3rd team QB is deemed the "emergency QB" and as a result not officially counted in the list of 45 dressed players that can be used anytime in the game. As a result of being one of the 8 non actives for the games, the emergeny QB should only be used in "emergency situations" ie late in the game. Of course if you are late in a game and an injury occurs to your 3rd string QB occurs you'd be able to replace him with another QB and not forced to move someone out of their natural position. Of course if you want to cirumvent this you can always put your 3rd string QB amongest your 45 dressed but prevents you for dresssing someone else that might be better served being dressed. Such as a backup DB, WR, Lineman or LB ie someone that can contribute on special teams/ or 5 Wide Out formations or nickel or dime situations on defense etc. In terms why the NFL insists that only 45 of the 53 on the active roster can be dressed on game days is a whole other question.

  4. There are 31 other teams out there who would gladly prove to the doubters just how good EM is the moment he (hypothetically) got let go. It would be a damn shame if it ever happened. He is easily the second best receiver we have ever had here, with all due respect to the shortened career of Jerry Butler.

    124033

Exactly, put Eric Moulds on the Baltimore Ravens and that team might be as good if not better then Pittsburgh right now. While Moulds might not be a top 5 NFL WR these days there were some good points made on WGR the other day. He might not make an average team good, (like Owens didn't do much with San Fran the last few years) Moulds could make a good team better.

  5. Actually it is the opposite. for over 4 years now we have been 'rebuilding'.  By now playoffs are in order.  No one should get 7 years as you suggest to turn around a franchise in this day and age.

And BTW...I really don't think anyone gives a stevestojan one way or the other if you respect them or not.

    124131

Actually part of the reason our 'rebuilding plan' has gone so badly is John Butler's poor drafting in 2000. Everyone agrees that the two main needs on defense we have now is a lack of pass rush and a question mark at FS. Had Erik Flowers/Corey Moore and Travares Tillman lived up to their predraft billings and selections some of these question marks would be filled thusly making us a better team. Just imagine if we could replace the selection of Erik Flowers with Darren Howard. Howard would give us added pass rush and I'd imagine Tom Donahoe would have not traded up to get Ryan Denney allowing us to keep the 3rd and 4th we gave up for him. If so maybe we have Randy McMichael on this team.

I bring up the 2000 draft as they say it takes a good 3-4 years to show how well you did in a draft. Look no further then the Patriots, in that draft they landed Tom Brady and we all now how he's turned out to be.

Though we could even go so far as saying the drafting of Todd Collins in 1995 is another reason for our current struggles.

  6. On the heels of his questionable decision to put an unpracticed JP in against a Buzzsaw, MM has perhaps topped himself by starting Baker against one of the best passing offenses in the NFL.  Should've been done weeks ago if it was going to be done - at least then Baker would have had some practice.  Now, he gets to learn against the Rams' potent aerial attack... good stuff.  Expect a long day on Sunday.

(Btw, I'm not suggesting Reese isn't a no-talent assclown - clearly, he is - but the timing of this move is awful.)

    124044

I disagree, if we're going to find out if Baker's going to be anything more then a career backup we might as well try him out against the NFL's best. The timing might be now as Lori eluded more reflective of McGees struggles. Now if Baker shows to be better then Reese we might end seeing Vincent back at CB and allow Terrence to return to be our nickel back which seems to be the position most fans want him at. Then during the offseason or during the draft we could either take a FS or CB pending on where the Bills expect Vincent to play in 2005. If it's FS it shows the Bills have little long term faith in Baker. If it's a CB it could be they plan on shifting Vincent over and need someone to replace Vincent or McGee's CB spot. Not to mention Clements and Thomas are due to be UFAs after 2005 so our depth at the CB position could quickly evaporate.

  7. I haven't made an image map in ages. The program of choice that I used back in the day was GeoHTML. As it writes all the HTML code for you, all you really need to do is make the shape of the area you want to use in the map ie no need to get the coordinates from MS Photo editor and typing them in etc.

Of course it is an older program and lists Win NT support, so would think would run in XP but if by chance it doesn't work, I'd suggest compatibility mode with some other Win system.

Anyways, I did a quick google search and think this is a link to the official site.

  8. Some say no, but I hope that the Bills take a look at Hopkins who will be a ufa next season. Nothing long term mind you, but from what I have seen, he is at least as good as JJ and might come cheaper because of his age.

Admittedly, this is a stop-gap measure, but I cannot see devoting huge cap dollars to Jennings, especially with what is going on at RT.

    122360

Brad Hopkins isn't a bad short term alternative, infact he's a guy I think Jennings compares to. In both aren't All Pros but they get the job done quietly and are good players. Though if I were Tom Donahoe I'd transition Jennings if have the chance. As if Jennings does get a favorable deal elsewhere we'd have a chance to match it. Chris Samuals and LJ Shelton are two guys who might be available as cap casualities that might be worth looking at but both might command as much if not more then Jennings might on the open market.

  9. One thing TD screwed up on was the DB. I woulda kept Winfield. He would play his A** off every game. I think he has several picks this year in Minn. I guess were stuck with Clements who gets burned EVERY game. Atleast he does return one for a TD every year, but I liked Winfield better.

    120178

When did Clements get burned against New England? It seemed to me that Brady was completely focused on McGee's side. The only pass I remember going Nate's way was the one he picked off.

  10. listening to the morning extravaganza on fox radio, i can't believe this is even a topic.  granted it was 6 pm west coast time, but man i thought that opening was hilarious, granted i love the desperate housewives show, so i got the humour, but people are saying they are truly offended by the content and the innuendo's, have really we become that bad as a society where we can't have anything that might suggest something that might be slightly racy(i said racy, not racist.)  the only thing that upset me about the beginning is seeing how much nicolette sheridan has slid down the babe scale, i think its the lip implants, but she in no way is as hot as she was in her knots landing heyday!.  Hey america, grow a pair!(women are excused from that last comment)!

    119747

Nicollette Sheridan is still hot in my eyes, but I still can't get the mental image of Marcia Cross in that red number from a few weeks back out of my mind.

  11. According to NFL.com (which coincides w/ my approximate recollection) 12 of Bledsoe's 19 passes were intended for Moulds.

Is this due to Bledsoe having poor field vision, play design or do our other receivers just suck that much?

I realize that Moulds is by far our best receiving threat but common man, how 'bout distributing the ball a bit.

    118928

As I said it after week one, If we're going to win Bledsoe needs to gain some faith with throwing to guys other then Eric Moulds or else it could be a long season..

  12. Seen a few missed tackles by Winfield - something I don't remember seeing from him while he was here.

The announcers did say he's having a great year and the Vikes are glad they have him.

    CW

    116443

Winfield's an ideal bend but don't break CB. Instead of letting a player get behind him he let's the guy catch the ball and then tackles him which Favre, and/or any great WCO QB loves as it keeps the chains moving.

  13. What does it say about the guy when he is the head coach in Buffalo for several years and the fans *still* can't spell his name right.

How good does his defense look today against the mighty Bengals?

    116419

Better then Cotrell's defense is looking against the Packers. Infact Aikman was just ripping Antoine Winfield for missing not making a tackle in the open field.

  14. I think Jonas should be our number one priority in the off season, but he has indicated pretty strongly that he wants to leave and go to Atlanta.  Perhaps this expectation is why we continue to keep Trey Teague, who could be a solid LT (although not as good as Jonas).  Teague could be a better LT than Price, who is so valuable as a back up, but may not be good as a starter.  Moving Teague from Center may be ok, with Tucker shifting to that spot and filling the LG spot with a seviceble player.  By the way, perhaps we are going to tryout the big TE Peters at Tackle, as well!

    116426

I agree Jonas is our top priority. The talk of franchising him is definately out of the question, however if we can I'd defiately transition him. That would allow us to match any offers he gets or let him go if the contract offer is just too high.

In terms of alternatives, one thing I would NOT advocate though is moving Teague over etc. As the one thing we need is continuity on the line and think the reasons they're playing better of late as they are finally getting used to one another. As I see things right now our best combination thus far has been LT Jennings, LG Tucker C Teague RG Villiarial RT Williams and feel it's best to keep them together as much as possible.

If we do lose Jennings, then I would hope we re-sign Price (for insurance) and bring in another veteran to either compete with Price or McFarland (who I don't see being ready) or to start. I have yet to see a list of guys who'd be available but guys like Chris Samuels and LJ Shelton are guys who have been rumored to be cap casualties that I'd definately persue if can't bring back Jennings. I think the Seahawks would sooner franchise Walter Jones, as they have the last two seasons, then Alexander. As Alexander and Holmgren not always been in best of buddies. Not to mention they have Maurice Morris on the bench. Heck if they let Alexander go they could even be a suitor for Henry.

  15. I guess it would be best to compare him to other late 2nd round picks of late.

    115530

I think you're partially right, what's not fair as each draft is different and some drafts have far much more talent then others. Case in point that 2001 draft was much stronger then the 2002, not only because we were able to get Henry and Schobel in the 2nd but it had more talent on the whole. Not to mention it does take a player about 3-4 years to develop in the NFL.

Here's a quick look at the last 10 picks of the 2002 draft and where they stand:

      2 24 56 Ladell Betts Redskins: 2nd String RB

      2 25 57 Jon McGraw Jets 2nd String FS

      2 26 58 Michael Lewis Eagles 1st String SS

      2 27 59 Sheldon Brown Eagles 1st String CB

      2 28 60 Anton Palepoi Seahawks 2nd String DE w/Broncos

      2 29 61 Ryan Denney Bills 2nd String DE

      2 30 62 Antwaan Randle El Steelers 3rd WR/Primary Returner

      2 31 63 Antonio Bryant Cowboys 3rd WR w/Browns

      2 32 64 Travis Fisher Rams 2nd String CB

      2 33 65 Deion Branch Patriots 3rd WR

    In comparison:

2 22 53 Quincy Carter Cowboys 2nd String QB (Starter due to injury) w/ Jets

      2 23 54 Michael Stone Cardinals 2nd String SS

2 24 55 Quinton Caver Eagles 2nd String LB (Starter due to injury) w/ Chiefs

      2 25 56 Tony Dixon Cowboys 1st String SS

2 26 57 Willie Howard Vikings OUT OF FOOTBALL

      2 27 58 Travis Henry Bills 2nd String RB

      2 28 59 Marques Tuiasosopo Raiders 2nd String QB

      2 29 60 Andre Dyson Titans 1st String CB

      2 30 61 Shaun Rogers Lions 1st String DT

      2 31 62 Gary Baxter Ravens 1st String CB

I wouldn't call Denney a bust, as coming out he was discussed as a strong run stopping DE with limited pass rush ability which he has shown here for the most part. I think Denney's a solid player yet Kelsay brings more to the table and that's why he got benched. He might never live up to his draft status, but think he's worth keeping around as a depth/wave player.

In terms of what we gave up, I did slightly outline that in a thread comparing McKinnie and Mike Williams if want to dig it up. But if want to go on pure player vs players the 49ers ended up with LB Saleem Rasheed, who might be starting in place of Julian Peterson but as of yet shown to be nothing more then a back up and K Jeff Chandler, who was out of the NFL and last I heard. He might have gotten a token call with the Rams a few weeks back when Wilkins was ailing.

  16. For everyone saying it was his Assistants.  I just have to ask one thing.

    Who hired them?

You will only be as good as the people you put around you.

    115694

I truely think Donahoe all along wanted Marvin Lewis, that's why he he waited until after the Super Bowl to name his head coach. Yet I think Lewis failed him in either in the interview process and/or his wife commenting not wanting to move here due to the school situation. As a result think he went with Williams. I'll admit Gregg made some mistakes with his assistants yet being Gregg was the last HC hired, it's possible some of his first choices of assistants weren't all available due to taking jobs elsewhere.

I also think a lot of people are overly crtictical of his choices as most seem to forget a few things. I mean it looks like the choice of Jerry Gray was a good one. Steve Fairchild, our former RB coach, has the Rams as the 6th best offense in the NFL. Steve Kragthorpe, our former QB coach, finished 2nd last year in the NCAA voting for best head coach while at Tulsa, unfortunately for them they've struggled this season. These are some of the guys Gregg hired but most fans either forgot about or fail to acknowledge.

While Gregg wasn't my first choice of who to hire, mine was Dom Capers, I think he did fairly well considering all the circumstances, taking over a team taht was stripped of almost all of it's talent and then slowly rebuilt. Pat Williams and Eric Moulds are the only two remaining starters from the Wade Phillips era. I wish GWwell wherever his career may take him, except when he plays the Bills of course.
