1. the pats also ply the free agent market pretty well -- rodney harrison, corey dillon, roosevelt colvin, ted washington, keith traylor. i'm sorry if i sound like a broken record, but free agents are equally as important as draft picks.  the best player on the current bills team is a free agent -- spikes.  fletcher is probably the best player on the defense this year, and he's a free agent. finally -- and i realize i may be refuting my argument in saying this -- but not one starting offensive lineman right now was drafted by the bills. this is despite the fact that the bills have drafted jennings, pucillo, mike williams, geisinger, the guard from iowa, duke preston, and at least one other stiff in the past five years.

Exactly.....You need a balance from both FA and the draft....If you have players

coming only from the draft, you will look like a college team...If you sign just

FAs ignoring the draft you will look like a overaged 30+ team like our current bills.

Also, one of the reasons the Pats are able to trade down is the position they pick...In the last 5 years they have been picking very late in the round. It is easy to trade into those spots without paying a ransom...Hence more trade with the Pats..I am not saying that the Pats are not shrewd enough...but that is their

    position....

  2. Interesting article in today's Indy Star.  I don't know if I've seen Tom Moore's name mentioned around here, but I think it is fair to say this guy has done a good job as the Colts Offensive Coordinator.  Lots of NFL experience, just not as an HC.

    531773

Another good Assitant coach but without Head coaching experience....Plus

I would like to see what Moores record was before he had a Peyton Manning,

James and Harrsion on his offense.

  3. I agree...but the rollouts take the onus off the OL. Yeah they still have to block, but not as well. JP will buy extra time by getting away and our incompetent blockers' inability to do their jobs will be less damaging.

    531501

How about the WRs blocking....May be JP and McGahee can get some yards

too....I haven't heard good or bad about our WRs ability to block downfield,

anyone who has watched tape care to comment ?

  4. lack of pure "football" strentgh is a typical problem for many rookie linemen.

a year of intense supervised weightroom time should fix the problem.

    531822

I think it more a lack of coaching....We really have a sorry bunch of folks called

    coaches...

  5. Supposedly, Gerard Warren has started to play like a top-5 pick for Denver and is a free agent.  He's one to watch.

You're forgetting how hard it will be to attract players to Buffalo this offseason.  We'll have the cap room to sign Bentley and Hutch, but will they come?

    531862

Anyone will come if they throw the right money.....Eventually players want

the money and the security that comes with it....

  6. Keeping him would take up a lot of cap room when this team really needs to adress both defensive, and offensive line.

We also just shelled out a decent amount of money to McGee.

    531830

What is wrong in keeping your own players back...That is what the good

teams do...You have to re-sign your emerging or already stars.....not to

    the overhill players...

  7. Ogden has had an awful year.  Reports out of Baltimore say he has looked like a shell of his old self.  He simply got destroyed by Freeney earlier in the year and looked terrible.  No way do we trade that pick for Ogden.

    531747

He even got destroyed by Schoebel last year......Ogden is past his prime...

  8. Wade did good things for us as our defense was good during his time as a head coach.  However, that is now in the past. That loss against the Titans was arguably the most painful loss in Bills history.

    531041

Wade lost grip of his team just like Mike is doing now....He had no control over

the QB controversy, refused to kick his ST coach off the team and let the

midget create a locker room divide....

His defense was good, bend but don't break....but their intensity in the

RedZone was amazing....I had never seen a bills defense that was that

resilient in the Red Zone during those years.....Unlike this years version...

If the opponent got the ball in the Red zone it was TD.

  9. I'm not clear as to why an offensive lineman with years of high school, college, and several years of pro play would have his mind messed up by moving to center. Is he some sort of china doll?

    531324

The guy signs a FA deal with the Bills to play at the LT spot and boom he

is moved to the Center, where he is a complete mismatch in the NFL against

the speedy and bulky DTs that he doesn't see in College...

The guy played without complaining, but I guess his heart was never in it.

  10. 5. I talked with ex-Packers general manager Ron Wolf the other day and he assured me that no NFL team has even sent out feelers about him being a possible candidate to return to the league and head their front office. But Wolf's name comes up almost every offseason, and while I didn't get the feeling he's itching to leave retirement and get back in the NFL rat race, it wouldn't surprise me if he was open to getting blown away by an offer from Detroit if the Lions send team president/CEO Matt Millen back to the broadcast booth.

    Rest of the article:

    Banks Shots Around the League

  11. I won't blame TD for MW, however I sure as hell blame him for Trey Teague. He tried to build his o-line around Teague, big mistake. His personell decisions on the o-line are probably the biggest reason he will be fired. He should have kept Rueben Brown and passed on Anderson.

Second reason is moving up and drafting Denney. His drafting goofs are why the Bills are in trouble - good players trump bad coaching any day.

    531308

The Teague experiment was a disaster and the person to blame should be

Greg Williams....He was the one who inserted our starting LT (signed from

FA) to the center (because he played that position in college 4 years prior

to that) and messed up TTs mind.....I actually thought that Mularkey would

have moved TT back to LT, but that did not happen due to Jennings having

established that spot after he had been moved from RT to LT 4 years ago.

    what a mess......

  12. I disagree...I do not think the Cowboys line is that great.  I think DB is playing within himself, and has a coach who puts him in a scheme where he can be successful.

    531039

There you got it my friend.....MM has never put DB in a position to make plays

nor has give JP a chance to make plays.....The biggest gripe I had with DB was

that he held on to the ball too long, trying to make plays downfield....and took

    too many sacks.....

This coaching staff has to go.....Jerry Gray has not figured how to stop teams

on 3rd and long for 5 years.....He might have the best blitzing defense....but

if you cannot stop the opponent on 3rd and long....then you are toast....

  13. Ganesh actually is right.  MW, if you watch him only during running plays dominates most DL in the league.  He has won the battles consistently with Ty Warren of the Pats in the past.  I know he is overpaid (just like 95%) of 1st round draft picks, but he is a force in the running game.

    531099

Yup...At least we had the satisfaction of running over the other team and

controlling ToP...even if lose.....But with Peters in their, neither the running

game nor the passing game has got going.....I definitely think they made

a mistake in moving MW from the RT position....May be they got the wrong

guy (MW) to send the wrong message to the lousy player on the line (BA).

  14. Funny, but it would be hard for the bills to pass up on Leinhart regardless of JP's potential.

Leinhart will be more of a sure thing in the NFL then JP, and as much as I like JP and will be in his corner for the next 2 years regardless of what Bills fans say, we cannot afford to pass up on Leinhart if he falls in our lap.

passing up on Leinhart would be painful in the next 10 years as he goes to multiple probowls and lights up the league.

JP has potnetial, but JP at his best IMO still won't match what Leinhart does in the NFL IMO

Gut the veterans on this team besides Fletcher and Spikes and rebuild

If the Bills continue to lose the rest of their games with JP at the helm, and becuase of this Leinhart falls to us then JP will have made the decision easy for us. Bring in Leinhart and let JP and Leinhart duke it out for starting position similiar to what SD did with Rivers and Brees.

Nobody can say SD made a mistake picking up Rivers after they already had Brees.

    530855

The NFL Draft is a lottery and like a lottery there is only few haves and many

misses.....For every Peyton Manning there have been many failures in

Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler, Tim Couch, Akili Smith......And then there are

SB winners in 6th rounders and backups....You never know how it is going to

play out....JP has the tools to succeed in the NFL...will he, it depends on so

    many other factors....

  15. Van acknowledged that the weather was cold in the NE game, but went on to add that Brady wasn't affected by it on the same field.

    530845

Brady has 6 years of experience in the league compared to JP's 1.....

I agree though that JP needs to really improve on the accuracy of his

short passes....The short passes are the BREAD and Butter in the NFL

these days.....These days teams hardly throw the ball deep.......Most

of the game plans are to keep the chains moving with short and

accurate passes that get 5-10 yards....

  16. i am more then a little tired of the FA signings.

lets get back to the fundamentals and build with the draft.

then add a possible vet late in the FA period.  Guys like Leonard Smith, Conrad Dobler, James Lofton.  These are guys I want.

not the Joe Panos, Bennie Andersons, and Trey Teagues.

    531122

You are sure you don't want someone like a Takeo Spikes or

    a Lawyer Milloy....

Of course you can't be happy about Coy Wire, Roscoe Parrish, etc...

Bottom line is we need a balance from the draft and the FA pool...You can't

just look at one of them....Draft gives cheap labor....FA gives well-proved

labor...You have to have a balance

  17. Grays biggest weakness in his 5 years with the bills:

Inability to get off the field on 3rd and longs.....That one failure caused

this team from being a dominating defense for 4 years and from being a good

one in its final year......Especially this year, with 4 years of films they really

exposed him....thanks to Dick LeBeau who showed how to run against this

defense in the last week of last season....Everyone used that game as

a blueprint to beat us....and Gray COULD NOT adjust...

  18. I'm not sure why someone who built an offense predicated on a great QB and versatile RB will be a good choice.  I too have heard good things about Childress but you gotta get someone who's adaptable - and shown that he can adjust to different personnel - not sure I see that from him yet.

    530366

Charlie Weis.....a guy who can adapt to any situation.......

  19. One of the things that has been disturbing is ever since MW was taken

away from the RT position, our Running game has really gotten worse...

At least when MW was in, they could run the ball on the right side as

evidenced by the # of 100 yard games Mcgahee had....However since

Peters became the RT, he might have played better individually ( or is

that a misconception) our running lanes on the right side has been zero.

  20. Like that INT at the goal line last week?  This kid is all talk and no substance.  He's proven he can't play in this league.  Time to move on.  And please, he's shown zero improvement from week to week.  If he had, he'd have alot more yards, TD's, less fumbles and INT"s.

    529053

Yeah...sure...if he had a decent line giving him more than 2 seconds to

make a throw.....and a running game will help......Remeber the goal of

the year......Our MIGHTY Defense and GREAT Running Game and added

to it our COACHING staffs committed to POWER-RUNNING were supposed

to shepher a young, effectively rookie QB along a NFL Season.....Can we

first try to do those 1st three things before hitting at the QB................
